A Singular Vision
This is BIMA’s first major solo
retrospective. The exhibition showcases
Gayle Bard’s early installations to her

celebrating the long and rich career of one
of the Northwest’s most respected artists.

Richard Jesse Watson has been creating
children’s picture books since 1985. His
version of “The Night Before Christmas”
rocketed to the New York Times Bestseller
List, and “Tom Thumb” won the SCBWI
Golden Kite Award. His illustrations have
been chosen for numerous local and national
juried exhibitions. October 12-January 5.

Mark McKnight has traveled worldwide.

incarnations in the film industry but is
returning to his roots in still photography
for this show. “The Owl People,” derives
from Native American lore where the
owl’s presence holds a potent sacred place.

In this exhibit of oil paintings by Craig
Spencer, he has reworked some of the
themes that has inspired his painting over
the past 20 years. From the center of the art
studio, his art captures the mood, color, and
symbolism of the four directions. He also
paints maritime scenes full of the colorful
atmosphere of Port Madison where he
works. Through November.
In December, Kelly Asadorian and
Dave Myer of Myorian Studio Studio
release a group of new works. Based on a
theme of abstract organics, “Astoria,” this
art combines glass and steel to shape wall
mounted constructions.

Sculptures by Matthew X. Curry are
composed of repurposed materials collected
over a long architectural career. His
drawings, and sculptures, are meant to
evoke a sort of 4th dimension connecting
the physical, spiritual and intellectual
worlds. They are inspired by nature,
malleable time, the sciences, and a dose
of jazz all fused with the joy of creating.

sculptures by Ann Reynolds-Pearl. A
Guardian Spirit is one that takes special care
of a particular individual or place helping
to protect and preserve ones wellbeing.
These Guardians sculptures where created
to elicited a response through their pastures
to show various emotional strengths. Some
are demure in their attitude while others
are a more bold with their statement.

The Minutes, the Hours, the Days
Rick Araluce conjures stories with

Telling Tales: Narrative Works
“Telling Tales” features the works by
three regional artists: Nate Steigenga,
Cappy Thompson, and Anna Torma. The
artists are diverse in every way except for
their passion for storytelling. Their tales
come alive in the approximately 40 works

This exhibit explores the complex
relationship between fashion and traditional
folk costumes. Through displays featuring
costumes both traditional and re-created

means to “dress Swedish” and how this has

50 Years of Making Sculptures

celebrates his 50th year of work as a stone
sculptor. This exhibition provides a window
into his formal and thematic repertoire,

Using the symbolic number 108, she moves

Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun & the Moon
SAM is honored to host a major exhibit
of Peruvian art that includes rarely seen
sculpture, metalwork, painting, and textiles
spanning 3,000 years. Visitors are introduced
to the rich heritage of ancient Peru, including
superb works of the Mochica, Chimu, and
Inca cultures. October 17-January 5.
In a Silent Way
This exhibition of works from SAM’s
permanent collection brings together a group
by Roy de Carava, David Hammons,
Carrie Mae Weems, Glenn Ligon, and
Rashid Johnson that quietly reflect on
African American identities and histories.
The works show a range of descriptive and
poetic approaches, but they are united by a
shared sensibility. Through December 1.

This special installation of objects from
SAM’s collection features the glittering
golden threads of French brocades, Imperial
Chinese robes, Japanese kesas, and Persian
bed covers—all seen as rich backdrops
to gleaming objects of beauty, such as
powdered-gold lacquer boxes, a Fabergé
cigarette case, a seated Buddha with gold
inlay, and African hammered-gold earrings.

The Body, Incarnate
Deborah Kapoor’s sculptures employ
unusual and traditional materials to create

Indian raga music has long inspired
visual artists. Today North Indian classical
singer/composer Srivani Jade turns this
idea on its head and creates a series of raga
compositions based on the modern miniature

Tacoma ceramist Reid Ozaki shows
his newest work in stoneware. Well known
amongst the Northwest’s talented clay
artists, Reid has been active in ceramics
since earning a BA at University of Puget
Sound in Biology and an MFA in Ceramics.
His work has been published and shown
nationally and internationally. Through

Jewelry Art and Jewelry
Artists showcasing hand-made sterling
silver jewelry from locally, regionally, and
