Are You Considering a Care Manager?
If you are considering hiring a Care
Manager or Aging Life Care Professional to
help you navigate through life’s circumstances, please consider asking the agency:
• What are the primary services provided by your
agency/business?
• How many Aging Life Care Professionals are in
your agency/business?
• Is there a fee for the initial consultation and, if
so, how much?
• What are your professional credentials and are
you CERTIFIED?
• How long have you been providing aging life care
or care management services?
• Are you available for emergencies?
• How do you communicate information?
• What are your fees? (These should be provided
in writing prior to service initiation)
• Can you provide me with references?
• Are you a member of Aging Life Care Association?
Aging Life Care Professionals (Care Managers)
are members of the Aging Life Care Association™
(ALCA) and differ from Patient Advocates, Senior
Advisors, Senior Navigators, and Elder Advocates.
ALCA members must meet stringent education,
experience, and certification requirements of the
organization and all members are required to adhere
to a strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
The benefits of using an Aging Life Care professional are:
• Personalized and compassionate service—focusing on the individual’s wants and needs.
• Accessibility—services are typically available
• 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Continuity of care—communications are coordinated between family members, doctors and
other professionals, and service providers, at the
client’s direction.
• Cost containment—avoiding inappropriate place-

County Water System Maintenance
In order for the county to replace valves and preform maintenance on our water system, the water will
be shut off to the entire building on Thursday,
August 18, at 10:00 p.m. for approximately six hours.
If this causes you any particular difficulties, please
contact Plant Operations at ext. 1720.
Mail Call!
We need your help!
Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s Veterans for
all their sacrifices. They transport our heroes to
Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. While WWII Veterans were serving overseas,
they didn't have cell phones, faxes or telegraphs.
Letters from home, called “mail call” were extremely
important to them! So the Honor Flight Network has
created a project titled “Mail Call” in which Veterans receive letters from people like you thanking
them for their service to our country. Please come
make a card or write a letter in the Hobby Room on
Friday, August 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or
from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Life Enrichment
department will be
supplying everything
you need to make the
perfect card for our
Veterans! We hope to
see you there!

Midweek Movie
The Midweek Movie for Wednesday, August 17,
is The teahouse of the August Moon with Glen Ford
and Marlon Brando.
In the months immediately after the end of
World War II, the U.S. Army has occupied the island of Okinawa, Japan, and is trying to Westernize
the local population. Hapless Captain Fisby (Glenn
Ford) wants to do good by creating a social club and
schoolhouse, but the villagers would rather have a
teahouse, complete with geishas. The situation looks
like a standoff, until the wily, philosophical interpreter Sakima (Marlon Brando) offers his services as
a go-between. This 1956 video is 2 hours and
3 minutes long and will be shown at 11:00 a.m. and
6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Not Rated.
An Open Bridge Alert
We are changing the
time we play Open Bridge
on Monday in the 4th Floor
Lounge and Saturday in the

starting to play at 6:30 p.m.
from a former time of
6:45 p.m. We play a sociable three rounds of six
rounds and end with a 1-2-3 and booby prize score.
Come join us when you are looking for a fun evening—no partner needed. —Lorna Landis #541

Life Bio
Life story writing is an excellent way to build
relationships with other Residents. Benefits of writing in a structured class include the guidance of a
writing prompt, the coaching of a trained facilitator,
the enjoyment of hearing the stories of others, and
the power of writing and sharing one’s own story to a
listening audience.
You may choose to start with tiny vignettes of a
few sentences in regards to genealogical and family
life stories—circumstances of birth, favorite toys,
stories about siblings and grandparents or you may
wish to use some thought provoking questions to get
you started with topics such as:
• Brief encounters
• Inventions
• Children and the things they say
• Accomplishments in which you
are the most proud
• Where you were on important days in history
The thought of writing a life retrospective can
daunt even the most experienced writer; however,
writing in groups decreases isolation, reawakens
dormant interests, offers purposeful activity, and
hones cognitive skills. Marianne Soviero, a freelance
writer, will be here to introduce a writing class on
Monday, August 15, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hobby Room.
This class will be limited to 20 participants. If interested, please call Ellen at ext. 1743.
Happy Birthday Lois!
The family and friends of Lois Brown invites all
Residents to a birthday party in her honor on Saturday, August 20, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the
Elevator Lobby. Please plan on stopping by to wish
Lois a “Happy Birthday”. There will be a basket on
the organ for cards.
Israel Trip Talk
Come to the Club Room on Friday, August 19,
at 2:00 p.m. to hear Residents Leona (Sheffield)
Feldhausen and Jane Martin talk about their trip
to Israel and show a CD. It will be an informative
and interesting presentation.

Bible Study and Prayer Group Cancelled
Due to Chaplain Kris being on vacation, the
Monday, August 15, 1:00 p.m. Prayer Group and the
Tuesday, August 16, 10:30 a.m. Bible Study have
been cancelled.
Phantom
of the Opera
On Saturday,
August 20, we will show
Phantom of the
Opera starring Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick
Wilson, and Minnie Driver. This is a special showing for the Fun Chorus who will sing Phantom of the
Opera at their next performance.
Deep in the passageways below the Paris Opera
lives a lonely, talented, horribly disfigured man who
revels in terrorizing the theater’s employees as the
Phantom of the Opera. When the masked Phantom
sees young Christine Daaé, his heart melts. He secretly trains her, transforms her into a star... and loves
her. When she cannot return his affection, as her
heart already belongs to another, all the pain that the
Phantom has held within is revealed with horrifying
results. This 2004 film is 2 hours and 26 minutes long
and will be shown at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel.
Drama/Thriller. Rated PG-13 for brief violent images.
Laundry Room Reminder
As stated in the Residents’ Manual, Laundry
Room hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
daily. It is requested that each Resident stay in the
Laundry Room during the washing and drying cycle.
It is requested that if this is not possible, please check
on the wash frequently and leave a sticky note indicating your apartment number on the washer or dryer
so you can be contacted if the cycle completes while
someone is waiting on the machine. As a courteous
gesture to other Residents wishing to use the laundry
facilities it has been requested that clothes be removed from machines as quickly as possible and that
all filters are cleaned after each use. If you need assistance, please contact the Operator who will notify
Security in the event that clothing is left in a machine
unattended.

ments, duplication of services, and unnecessary

• Quality control—aging life care services follow
ALCA’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
These can be especially helpful when you are
alone. Having someone to advocate on your behalf
based on your wishes and goals, to help you have the
best quality of life possible in the safest setting as
you age in place are priorities. The Aging Life Care
professional can help you navigate through complicated situations, as they arise, that you may need
guidance with.
Think of managing your life like managing a
business. You wouldn’t have one person in charge
of every aspect of the business and it’s prudent to
manage your life similarly. I would recommend that
if you have an Aging Life Care professional, you have
someone else that is appointed your Durable Power
of Attorney; this provides you with protection having
checks and balances in place.
Concierge Services, here in St. Mark Village provides Care Coordination to our Residents as an add on
service. As a member of the Aging Life Care Association and being active in the local organization, over
the last five years, I am very familiar with the services
that are available in the community. If you’ve decided
for whatever reason that you prefer to hire a company
locally, please ask me for a referral. There are several
very reputable Aging Life Care companies and unfortunately there is one or two in the local community
that I would not be able to endorse because of their
practices. Or if you would like to know more about
care management or other services available through
my department or out in the community, please contact me at ext. 1706.
—Karla Lindeen, Resident Services Director
