Rebekah Seeley and Dylan Holton were crowned king and queen. The post-prom party at Boyne City Lanes kept the fun going late into the night. Jack Kloc and Jill Smigielski traded their dress shoes for bowling shoes! All State MHS Powerlifters Coach Campbell is very proud of his Ironmen powerlifters for their outstanding work and commitment this season. Eight team members qualified for state competition and traveled to Muskegon for the meet. Six of the eight earned all state status. Team picture at left: Joey Blanchett, Coach Campbell, Ian Meeder, Tristan Richardson, Chase Ritchie, Dyllan Whitney, Kel-C Howard, George Schlaff, Chris Nielson, Clara Nolte. Ironbots Storm the Castle The Mancelona High School robotics team competed at Standish-Sterling High School and Escanaba. During the season, eleven robotics students work with three adult mentors to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the engineering challenge. The team finished the first week of competitions ranked 30th out of 40 teams. But soon after that, they experienced huge growth by learning from what didn’t work. The team ranked 15th in the third week and were chosen for the quarterfinals. The robots had to overcome obstacles such as a moat, draw bridge, rock wall, and accurately shoot foam boulders at the castle. Oh the Places You’ll Go 2 Mancelona High School class of 2016 seniors created a college/career wall to track “The places we will go.” Communities In Schools of Mancelona is promoting FAFSA completions and tracking student progress. Seniors are awarded gift cards upon completion. Fiftyfive percent of the class completed the FAFSA. Just Read! State Geo Bee Competitor Mancelona Elementary students kicked off March Reading Month with “Drop Everything And Read” day. Everyone arrived cozy in their pajamas, ready for a day of reading. Students brought their favorite stuffed animals or dolls to act as an avid audience for readers. Mancelona Middle School eighth grader Nikolas Kruger qualified to compete at the state finals of the National Geographic Bee which hosts nearly 100 top Geographic Bee contestents from throughout Michigan at the Fetzer Center at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Career-Tech Center Visit Mancelona Middle School eighth graders visited the TBAISD Career-Tech Center to learn about educational programs such as allied health, teacher academy, construction trades and more. They are exploring career ideas and making decisions about what high school classes to take next fall. The field trip to CTC gives them a glimpse of the many options available throughout their high school careers. If students are interested in participating in a CTC program, they must plan high school courses accordingly to ensure all graduation requirements are met. For more information about CTC, visit www.tbactc.org. Father Daughter Dance The Father Daughter Dance sponsored by Communities in Schools of Mancelona was a huge success. The February evening was a perfect “date night” for girls and their dads or father figures. The 80’s theme got everyone in the mood to dance. After all, girls just wanna have fun! 200 Club Mathematicians Elementary and middle school students excercise their math skills with a 20-minute daily math review. They are tested quarterly with an eight-minute, 300-question test. The goal is to complete at least 200 questions. If they complete 200 with time to spare, they are encouraged to continue. Pictured above are the proud members of the 200 Club. Teachers look forward to adding even more members next time. 3 Student Health Services Elementary - Age 21 Ironmen Health Center (IHC) expanded to provide health services to elementary schoolaged children. Plus, it continues to serve the older kids as well -- all the way through the age of 21. Mancelona Elementary School staff and parents welcomed IHC services and are great partners in health care. Seniors All graduating seniors can visit IHC. At 18 years of age, students assume legal responsibility for their health care and IHC can help them in this transition. A senior visit offers practice in completing consent for services and reviewing family history based on consent completed by parents/guardians. Also discussed are health goals as they move into higher education, training or work. Annual Comprehensive Physical Exam An annual comprehensive physical is an important health visit for all AND it can serve as the physical requirement for school sports participation. Physical exams scheduled on or after April 15, 2016 are good for the 2016-17 school year. Health Insurance for Children IHC provides assistance for families to enroll in Medicaid/Healthy Kids, MIChild or the Healthy Michigan Plan (teens 19 and older). Call us at (231) 587-9840, or the Health Department of Northwest Michigan at (800) 432-4121 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Child Psychiatry - MC3 IHC supports the Michigan Child Collaborative Care (MC3) program to support the physical and mental health needs of children. As part of the program, IHC consults with the Pediatric Psychiatry Department at the University of Michigan. Summer IHC is open during the summer too. Call (231) 587-9840 for an appointment, or walk-ins are always welcome. $10 DRAWING - APRIL 16 thru JUNE 30 GET A PHYSICAL EXAM AND BE ELIGIBLE TO WIN $10 FOUR LUCKY WINNERS! Mancelona Has Talent! Every spring, the National Junior Honor Society hosts the Mancelona Middle School Talent Show to showcase student talent. And without doubt, Mancelona has talent! Students in fifth through eighth grades competed on the main stage for judges in categories such as vocals, instrumentals, dance, and comedy and drama. Each category has a set criteria based on a scoring system. It’s not easy performing in front of peers under the bright lights, but all the performers were stars. MEF Raises $17,700 For the past 27 years, Mancelona Education Foundation (MEF) has raised thousands of dollars to supplement the education of students at Mancelona Public School. This year’s annual spaghetti dinner and auction raised $17,700. Longtime MEF president David Vanderploeg, whose children attended Mancelona schools said, “As in past years, almost 100 percent of the money raised goes straight into the welfare of our students.” Mancelona Public Schools appreciates the efforts of MEF. Important Message from the Antrim County Sheriff’s Dept. I am pleased to announce that the Antrim County Dispatch Center has another resource to help aid the citizens of Antrim County in reporting an emergency. I invite you to visit our 911 page and click on the “smart 911 registration” tab to learn more about this service. I would further hope you create an account and join me in helping others learn about this valuable service.
