The Art of Portrait Lighting
Sunday Morning - September 11, 2011
•
9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon
This class will be for photographers of all levels, especially those less comfortable with the application of
photographic lighting. Emphasis will be placed on the thinking process going into each photograph. Students
will learn a simple step-by-step process that will allow them to succeed in creating images with great depth
and tonal range.
Multiple types of light will be covered including strobes, (both studio
and portable) tungsten, ambient and combinations of the three. This
will not be a highly technical class but more an exercise in “painting your subjects with light”. So come and learn to use light in your
career as a “storyteller”.
Great photography is an art, and Randy McNeilly is an artist. He’s
well-known in his profession — teacher, technology pioneer, expert
consultant to industry-leading companies, keynote speaker at gatherings far and wide.
After 30 years, I’m still passionate about this work. It’s my hobby, in
a real sense, and that’s why I still compete. I’m not just turning out
images for the client, as important as that is. I’m turning them out for
me, too.

He doesn’t rely on a distant lab to interpret his vision. At his 6500–square-foot high-technology studio in
Shelby, NC. — featured in numerous photography trade magazines — he controls the entire photographic
process.
And Randy prints his work on sturdy, acid-free archival papers, which last far longer than ordinary materials.
More than a century from now, his portraits and artwork will retain their clarity and vividness.
Randy McNeilly earned his Masters degree in 1992 in three years of print competition. That same year, he was
one of the first in the Southeast to introduce electronic imaging. This new digital technology frees photographers to shoot many more photos, and to see and enhance their work more quickly. And these advances — in
the hands of a master — increase the likelihood of a perfect shot.

The Five Ateliers
– an Artistic Journey through Creative Expressionism
Sunday Afternoon - September 11, 2011

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Arthur Levi Rainville, M.Photog., Cr, CPP, API, has been creating stunning photographs, wrapped in intrigue, atmosphere and romanticism, for over 50 years. With his life’s work being lovingly displayed on three continents; he has been touted as, “the Poet Lauréate of
Photography, one of the most sensitive, artists of our time.”
Working out of his decorous studio in the historic waterfront district of New
Bedford, Massachusetts, he is widely known for his muted, granular color work.
Refinements of this life’s passion lead to his lyrical, quixotic Mansuesco style
of today. Defying a definable formula, Mansuesco, much like Impressionism,
is a plurality of looks. An innate quality of light coupled with a compositional
choreography is akin to his signature style. In a one-man show at the French
Cultural Center, his work was astutely referred to as “... a synthesis of observation and imagination blended with a palette of gauzy colors.”
Arthur has taught portraiture professionally for 30 years, inspiring the budding or seasoned photographer to look to Art and Heart as they face the blank
canvas. Besides being a noted touring lecturer, he is a prolific author with copious articles and four published books on the Creative Spirit and living an Artful
Life. As our industry’s resident ‘Sage,’ Arthur continues to spread the word that private, personal style matters.
His time is devoted and divided between private portrait commissions via Artisan Trusts, photographic consultancy and teachings and
his experiential fine art studies and gallery work.
Arthur’s Program:
If you are searching for new answers for your photography, your business or your personal soul – you need to spend this special time
with our industry’s resident Alchemist Arthur Levi Rainville.
Arthur will offer a whirlwind tour of Art and Heart inspiration and emotion. His poignant stories and private encouragements will
set the stage for self-exploration. Drawing from his poetic, evocative Mansuesco style, he will lead you through inventive creative
photographic sessions that will set the tone by adhering to a simple credo: “an artist’s job is to deepen the mystery.” You will compose
images via Arthur’s fabled masterpieces called “Allegorie.” These Gestalt inspired classics, steeped in romantic overtones, will serve as
a muse for your visual imagery. His unique ‘photo-paint’ method of Gathering evocative elements together in an image is reminiscent
of the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the Symbolist period.
Arthur will offer his Five Ateliers (artist’s studios) as a way to breakdown and attend to the elements of making more beautiful and
meaningful portraiture.
The First Atelier will reveal Technique – from a reinterpretation of Caravaggio’s Chiaroscuro to cutting-edge digital intrigues.
The Second Atelier will explore Aesthetic – from creating the lost profundity of Vermeer to reinterpreting art for today’s savvy consumers.
The Third Atelier will make it Personal – discovering your private inner strength to create deeper imagery.
The Fourth Atelier will touch Spiritual – understanding the power of outside forces on your work.
The Fifth Atelier will tie it all together through Alchemy – Alchemy was known as the spagyric art after the Greek word meaning to
separate and to join together. This is where the collective you joins with your very soul and transforms the work you do.
You will celebrate your Visual Journey and marry it with a new mysticism for an exciting visual signature style.
This reawakening visionary will offer an artistic fusion of ideas designed to guide your imagery to a heightened sense of wonder.
And because we really don’t want any ‘Starving Artists,’ Arthur will tie it all together with cutting edge marketing and business ideas
to make our Art/Heart world sing.
Arthur will play with your mind, tug at your heart and return you to your world changed forever. If you need to add new energy to
your photography and income to your business, not to mention a little sigh to your life - this is the time for you.
