PPANE members honored Roland Laramie our long time Executive Director who retired in January and his wife
Helen throughout the convention and at a reception Monday evening. Outgoing President Donna M. Goodhue invited all the past Presidents to join Roland and Helen, the PPANE Board and members for a loving look back at the
highlights of Roland’s career with PPANE and PPA. Roland and Helen enjoyed catching up with old friends at the
Coffee Cafe, a new addition to the convention experience where members could relax and chat in comfortable chairs
with beverages and snacks. Many thanks to Lustrecolor for sponsoring the Coffe Cafe. Everyone loved it!

President’s Message
Tom Hurlbut, CPP
I’m very proud to have attained the position of president, and
am humbled by the responsibility of being a steward of this
venerable 108 yr. old institution. I’m so grateful for a fantastic
board that I have the opportunity to work with. In these changing times we’ve all had to work to keep our businesses up to
date and competitive, offering our clients good value, keeping
up with technology, etc. The PPANE board is working hard to
do this for our organization, updating our infrastructure, creating new programs to give more value to members.
My theme for this year is “Be In Good
Company” I chose this because it reflects my personal experience. A few
years ago I didn’t imagine I would be
here today doing this. My first year
on the board, Arny Spahn was president and told the board that each and
every one of us should plan on being
president someday, and then, it was
unthinkable. As I spent time on the
board I came to establish friendships
and found that I was in very good
company indeed. The board members
I worked along side with encouraged
me to take on challenges and helped
me figure out how to handle them.
Being print committee Chair and Convention Chair also seemed unimaginable jobs to do and with good people
offering advice and to delegate to, I
was able to handle those jobs. Now,
in good company of amazing people
on the board, and learning from those
previous committee jobs, I feel
confident to know that I am ready to be president.
PPANE will give you the opportunity to be in the company of
our industries best, and how better to become one of the best
than to be in their company. Here you can learn from others
around you. There are so many willing to share their knowledge, such as in our All Star programs, you can learn how to improve your craft, your business skills,
and if you have been around and have
knowledge to share, PPANE can give
you an opportunity to share that with
others, again, the All Star program is
a way to do this.
When I first was hearing about NEIPP,
a photographer friend described it as
being like summer camp for photographers. If you ever went to summer
camp, do you remember how terrific
it was to make friends there? You get
to enjoy being in the good company of
your peers and accomplished instructors for a whole week!
So, being in good company as a member of PPANE could mean
getting involved on the board, but it can mean putting you in
good company to help you attain other goals. In this age of cyber-everything, there are lots of ways one can learn to improve
one’s craft and business without leaving home, but I think there
is no replacement for having professional peers that you have a
personal relationship with. If you are new here, you will make
friends that you will be able to count on for advice and help,
and be able to do the same for them. I am sure the student volunteers at the convention are beginning this experience already.
I’ve had experiences such as when my father was terminally ill,
or when I broke my collar bone at the beginning of wedding
season, that I was very grateful for the relationships I had made
in the photographic community and that I knew I wasn’t alone

and had good people that I could count on for help. You just
won’t get that from a webinar! PPANE is a community you
can be a part of and not only have people around you that you
can count on, but also have the opportunity to contribute to, it
will pay back in many ways.
As we were honoring Roland Laramie
at the convention, I would like to say
how fortunate I feel to be in his and
Helen’s company. When I first met
Roland, with all those awards on his
lanyard and all the initials after his
name, I was pretty intimidated. After
a little while of being on the board,
I started getting some calls, people
needing photographers, and, they were referred by the Laramies! I was very honored by this and over the last couple years,
I’ve gone to their house a few times and enjoyed sitting with
them over a cup of coffee or iced tea and feel so pleased to be
in their good esteem. I wouldn’t have their good company if
it weren’t for PPANE. The Laramies, and many others here at
PPANE inspire me to achieve my potential and I hope for that
to be the case for all of you too.
I will enjoy my experiences as president, visiting all the state
conventions. I hope to serve you well, working with the board
to keep PPANE current, strong, and a great value to it’s members.

The PPANE Board is designating a new scholarship in honor of Roland
and his dedication to print competition. For many years Roland was an
PPA Affiliate Juror and Jury Chairman and taught the judging class at
Winona and PPA.
Roland donated some of his beautiful children’s portraits (his own
children, in fact) which were auctioned at the cocktail reception and
banquet Monday night.
The competitive auction effort raised $1,650.00 for the
Roland L. Laramie Scholarship Fund so PPANE can send the first successful applicant selected to the next week long PPA judging workshop
in Atlanta.

bidders were Donna M. Goodhue, Diane Miller Yeatman, Nancy Green
and David Cramer.
The day after the party Roland sent this note: “A big thank you to all
the members that attended the Past Presidents reception in my
honor... and a special thank you to the past Presidents and their
spouses that we have not seen in years. I appreciated all the
kind words... it was heartwarming - a wonderful night.”

Helen Laramie Recieves National Award
PPANE was honored to welcome PPA President Ron
Nichols to our banquet where he installed our officers
and joined last year’s National Award recipients Keith
and Jen Raiche to honor Helen Laramie with the 2009
National Award.
To paraphrase from their speech: Tonight we are honoring Helen Laramie, who, over the decades has stood by
he spouse as he built their
business and moved into
leadership positions in various associations as well as
the photographic community. We are honoring an
individual who, when her
spouse became a leader in
the PPANE organization,
was there – assisting with
registration and behind the
scenes organization.
than she may have liked, was there to keep not only the
home fires burning, but the business running.
Over the years Helen Laramie, through her support
and devotion, has played a very important role in ENABLING her spouse to become not only the photographer he became, but the leader who has earned the
respect and admiration of his peers nationwide and
probably worldwide. SHE has provided the backbone
and peace of mind that has freed her spouse to take
on many challenges throughout the years, and to have
the impact he has had on various organizations. Think
back – where would you be without YOUR enabler to
simply get through life? Where would this very fortunate spouse be – no, where would we all be, without
this very special enabler?
By now you know the comments we have made tonight
only scratch the surface. Although her contributions
may not be as tangible as some of the other past recipients you see before you, they have been invaluable
to the State of Connecticut, PPANE, NEIPP, PPA and
ASP. It is time for Helen to
stand beside Roland once
again, this time as a fellow
National Award recipient.
Even though she was not
actively involved with the board, Helen would be there
at board meetings, taking it all in, patiently awaiting
lunch where she could once again take some time to
get to know the board members. When challenges
arose, she was there to bounce ideas off, talk through
problems or to simply listen and help maintain some
sanity – not just for her spouse, but the board as well,
ourselves included. At NEIPP Helen would also be
there – in the background – assisting with the models and always helping the younger photographers.
We are honoring a woman who, when the time came
for Roland to serve PPA and ASP and be away more

the Canon Par Excellence Award and the
Canon EOS 5D Mark II that came with it!
This prestigious award is given by Canon
to one maker, chosen by the print jury from
those print cases scoring 4 out of 4 merit
prints. Pat’s images are below.

Remember, if you are working toward a PPA Master of Photography degree and want your merited prints
counted toward your effort, you need to send them to the next PPA judging. Prints scoring 80 or higher from the
PPANE Affiliate Judging are automatically accepted as long as they are sent to the next PPA judging following
this competition. If your prints did not score 80 or higher, they can be judged again by a new judging panel at

Roland R. Laramie Lifetime Achievment Award
As you may, or may NOT know, up until a few years
ago, we had what was called the Diamond Lifetime
achievement award. Our last honored recipient
was Gary Thibeault. The award had been phased out,
but the PPANE board decided it was time to not only
bring back a lifetime achievement award, but to name it
after a member who has dedicated so much of his life to
this fantastic organization.
So, I’m honored to announce the first Roland R. Laramie
Lifetime Achievement award, given to a PPANE member
who has exhibited outstanding service and dedication
to the Professional Photographers Association of New
England.
Now, the last thing a lifetime achievement award winner
needs is yet ANOTHER plaque to hang on the wall, so
we decided that the recipient will receive a beautiful
jeweled pin to wear with honor.

Don’t get me wrong, there WILL be a plaque, and WE
will keep and display it. Each year, the new recipient’s
name will be added to the plaque.
Of course our next task was to decide WHO would be
the first recipient of this prestigious award. After several conference calls, emails, hair pulling and gnashing
of teeth, we decided the first recipient of the Roland R.
Laramie Lifetime achievement award goes to - Roland

PPANE Raises $815.00 for Scolarhips to NEIPP!
The PPANE Scholarship committee (Lorraine Bedell and Grace Cribbins) announced that they raised $815.00 through
ticket sales. The beautiful baskets donated by vendors, the Radisson and other businesses were on display throughout
the convention and ticket sales were brisk! In addition to the baskets, Larson donated a 4x6’ Soff Box and Lexjet gave a
Canon iPF 5100 printer. All the money raised goes back to our members in the form of scholarships to NEIPP. PPANE
gave TEN $350.00 scholarships to members who attended programming at the annual convention.

Hi, friends.
Well, its the PPANE Newsletter Round Up Issue. I feel like I just
took this job!
If you missed the convention, I hope you had a good reason. The
pre-convention classes were filled to overflowing, the print scores
were remarkable, the programs were memorable and the Coffee
Cafe was buzzing.
Those members who attended during a hectic time of year went back to their businesses refreshed and energized
with great new ideas and strategies.
I know we’re all heading into a busy season, so this will be the last newsletter of 2009. I’ll talk to you all again in
January. Be sure to check out the New England state conventions and the All-Stars programs coming up this winter.
They’re a great way to keep moving in cold weather!
