October 2012 Newsletter
Volume 42, Number 2 September, 2012 Fall Meeting, October 21 & 22, 2012 Holiday Inn, Harrisburg (Grantville), PA I Bob Hancock, President t’s late August as I prepare my final message as president of our Association. We’re having a very busy time here at our studio. My job as president was easier than the previous leaders who came before me, and having only 2 meetings has made a difference. I am looking forward to completing my year. I find myself worried, but not discouraged, about my profession and livelihood, as a Professional Photographer and business owner. After several down years, our business is doing well again this year. We have experienced some big sales in Pennsylvania Art, and Our Sports and Special events are doing well. As far as our Association, things have definitely changed! Digital Technology is changing not only the way we operate our business, its changing our Associations. People have vast amounts of information available 24 hours a day on the Internet. Many do not see the need to belong to professional groups like ours. Memberships in most state associations are declining. However, I am happy to report, we had many renewals and new members for this year. Belonging to the State Associations keeps you in personal contact with our industry. So, please make sure to renew your membership for 2013. We have made arrangements for some great talent in October, Kirk Volclain will be our main speaker, along with Llew Wentzel. Kirk will be talking about Seniors, and Llew will be talking about sports and school photography. Both are great photographers, and great teachers. Kirk's program is scheduled for all day Monday, and Llew’s, for Sunday afternoon. I will also provide a short program on Sunday, about Landscape photography and the simple use of NIk Filters. I will share some of my secrets about how we are selling our Art images, using Facebook as our primary way of marketing. It will be fun and entertaining. Bob Hancock, PPA of Pennsylvania President; Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman Ron Bookwalter, First Vice-President For those of you who are new or just forgot, I had already served as President in 2005 when our meetings were held at the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill, PA. I have accepted a request to complete the remaining term of John Hanneman who resigned and would have been our 2013 President. I have been working closely this year with our current President, Bob Hancock, to make his year as successful as possible and also to plan ahead for another exciting year in 2013. Past-President Rodney Clark M.Photog.,Cr.,CPP has graciously agreed to serve as Convention chairman to make sure that our members not only have access to some of the best photographic talent available but also to explore some new and different meeting venues that offer some wonderful opportunities for our members. Right now a lot of different ideas are on the board and I will keep everyone informed of what we have in mind later this year. Both our annual Convention and the October 2013 meetings will be held at The Comfort Suites in downtown Carlisle, PA. The 2013 Convention is set for April 14-16 2013 and the October meeting will be October 13-14 2013. Mark you calendars now! The Comfort Suites is in the heart of the Carlisle historic district with easy access to scores of boutique shops and eateries. Carlisle is also the county seat for Cumberland County and the old historic courthouse is only a few yards from our hotel. You can even check out where Confederate cannonballs took pieces out of the columns of the old courthouse! I can assure you that the cannons will be silent when we are there! Downtown Carlisle also abounds in many fine dining establishments within short walking distance from the Comfort Suites. The hotel has it’s own restaurant, The Gaslight Grille, and a full breakfast as well as free parking next to the hotel are included in our room fee. You can check out the hotel amenities at:http://www.comfortsuitescarlisle.com Please spread the word about all of the new and exciting things coming to PPA of PA both this year and next. We have membership categories to suit photographers at any level who want to learn and improve the quality of our profession. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in October in Grantville!
