COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Next week’s Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help. CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help people help themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact on communities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dignity and help those living on the margins of our society. Please give to the CCHD Collection. Some of you may not be familiar with the SPRED program. It is a wonderful ministry that provides religious education to people with disabilities. Here at our parish we provide programming for young adults from the ages of 17 to 21 years old. Our ministry is growing! We currently have two young people on our waiting list. However, they cannot join us, as we are in need of additional volunteers. If you are interested in joining our SPRED Team, we would love to have you! Or, if there is anyone you know that you think might be interested, please pass the information on to them. We meet on the second and third Wednesday of the month from 6:30-8:15 p.m. Please contact Pat Cahill at 847-989-2374 or contact Marion Hornung, our Director of Religious Education here at St. Mary of Vernon at 847-362-0653 for more information. God bless, Pat Cahill SPRED Ministry Chairperson Father Robert Barron will be hosting an event at Mundelein Seminary called “Who Will Fill These Shoes?” to take place Friday, November 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The purpose of the event is to invite young men from our Archdiocese between the ages of 16 to 35 to consider a vocation to the priesthood. All men attending the event must register by visiting the Vocation Office website: www.ChicagoPriest.com. Let us all pray that every young man with a vocation to be a priest will hear the Lord speaking to him through this invitation, and will have the courage to respond. November 16, 2014 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Saint Cecilia’s Corner By Michele Farmer Coming at the end of this week, on Saturday November 22, is the Feast of St. Cecilia. She is the patron saint of musicians, and everyone in Music Ministry here at St. Mary of Vernon knows her name. We end almost every prayer time at rehearsals by asking St. Cecilia to pray for us! Today, I am asking everyone at St. Mary of Vernon to pray not only for all those in music ministry now, but for the future of music ministers in the Saint Cecilia and an Angel church. Please pray that our young people see a way to use their talents not only at school, but here at church as well. Pray that adult musicians will continue to share their gifts as volunteers. Pray especially that professional musicians will see this ministry as a career path; a vocation and a way to live out their faith through service to the Church. Our Bishops continue to tell us that sung liturgy—singing at Mass—is to be the norm. It is not a luxury or an extra. It is the preferred and correct way to praise our God when we gather each weekend. According to a well-known quote from St. Augustine, ‘”They who sing, pray twice!” I would like to challenge each of you today, in honor of this upcoming Feast of St. Cecilia, to make a commitment to do your part to improve our community’s participation at our worship. While we are not all trained musicians, we each have a voice, and that voice is beloved by God. Do you lift your voice to participate in the songs of our liturgy? If this is beyond you, then do you lift your voice to participate in the spoken prayers and responses? Can you imagine how the rafters would ring if the hundreds of people who gather each weekend for Mass would actually be ACTIVE in their participation? Would sing or say “AMEN” with a full and committed voice? Would chant the Glory to God, or the creed, with heart and voice and not just mumble along—or even stand stoically with lips firmly closed? I have a unique point of view when we are together at Mass, since my seat faces nearly everyone in the assembly. It is inspiring to me when I look out to see faces engaged and interested, listening intently, focused on the altar or the beautiful window onto God’s creation. It is uplifting to see hymnals open, to hear voices of all kinds raised to our God. It can also be discouraging to see many who look as if they would like to be anywhere else but here in God’s house. But to our great credit, and great grace, we are here! We are in God’s house! So let us all approach the coming Advent season in the spirit of St. Cecilia, lifting our praises to God even through times of trial and struggle. He will not disappoint. Advent and Christmas in Music Ministry Adults—singers and instrumentalists always welcome. Rehearsals Wednesdays 7:30 pm *If you are an experienced instrumentalist and want to play for any Christmas Masses, please contact Michele Farmer 847-362-1005 x222, [email protected] Teens—Teen Choir will be singing Saturday November 29 at the 5 pm Mass. We begin preparation for Christmas Eve Masses on the Sundays of December at 2 pm in church. Youth Choir—children from third grade through seventh grade are welcome to join the Christmas Choir for the 5:00 pm Mass on Christmas Eve. Rehearsals are in conjunction with the Teens on the Sundays of December at 2:00 pm in church. Watch the bulletin for more information, and to sign up! RCIA – LOOKING INTO THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES PARISH LIBRARY CART IN NARTHEX NOVEMBER 22-23 The Parish Library Cart will be in the NARTHEX after all Masses next weekend -November 22nd-23rd. Stop by and see what we have available for you to check out. Please remember to return any items that you currently have checked out of the library. Anyone who would like to browse our full collection is always welcome to check out a key to the library during normal parish office hours (front page of the bulletin). Since the library room is occasionally used for meetings and small groups, we recommend you call the parish office ahead of time to make sure it is available when you want to visit. This coming Wednesday in the RCIA program, we will take a closer look at the Old Testament. Our seekers and their sponsors will learn about the origins, traditions, authors, and the process which brought the Hebrew Scriptures into being. We’ll investigate how the various styles of writing included in the Old Testament reflect the growth and evolution of the Jewish people, their faith practices, and the covenant with God which led to the promise of a Messiah. Did you know? • Elijah is one of only two individuals in Scripture who does not die – he is taken from wrath in a whirlwind (see 2 Kings 2:11). • The Psalms are the longest book of the Old Testament. • The name “Eve” means “the mother of all the living.” The RCIA team invites all our parishioners and guests to pray for Hank and Nathan (our seekers), Bob and Brad (our sponsors), our team of catechists, and all those who are seeking to better understand their relationship with God. INTERFAITH SERVICE Advocate Condell Medical Center in partnership with the faith community is pleased to host the sixth annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 23, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Centre Club, Advocate Condell Medical Center located at 200 W. Golf Rd., Libertyville. (847990-5750). In an increasingly multi-religious community like ours, it is important that we as people of faith come together as united Americans and celebrate and give thanks and gratitude for all God’s blessings. What better way to celebrate our American Thanksgiving than with all of our brothers and sisters who are created in the image of God! During this event, we will accept free-will donations. The money collected at this service will be shared 50% for Feed My Starving Children, an interfaith organization which feeds children around the world, and the other 50% will be shared equally among the congregations with local faith-based food pantries which have a hunger ministry display at this celebration. November 16, 2014 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 SEMINARIAN’S EVANGELIZATION PROJECT Responding to Pope Francis' call to invite all people to a renewed encounter with the love of God, two seminarians, Matt Litak and Peter Steele, from Mundelein Seminary will be going out into the community on behalf of St. Mary of Vernon, including going door to door, to invite people to a series of talks that will unlock the reason why faith matters, and what happens at Mass beyond the simple gestures and rituals. We will be discussing Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. Please feel free to join us to talk about this debut novel. Any questions, call Pat Schneider at 847-367-0590. "Responding to poverty and a cultural preference for boys, an Indian mother hides her newborn daughter in an orphanage. The girl is adopted by an Indian-born doctor and his American wife, who live in California. Parallel stories are told of young Asha's life in America, where she is distanced from her native culture, and the growing rift between her adoptive parents, along with the fate of her birth parents and their son, who leave their small village for Mumbai and gradually rise out of poverty...First novelist Gowda offers especially vivid descriptions of the contrasts and contradictions of modern India. Verdict: Rife with themes that lend themselves to discussion, such as cultural identity, adoption, and women's roles, this will appeal to the book club crowd." —Christine DeZelar-Tiedman, Univ. of Minnesota Libs., Minneapolis Library Journal THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE FOR SHARING HANDS & PADS On the weekend of November 22-23 we will be asking for your help in stocking the shelves for both our Sharing Hands and PADS Ministries. Although we are collecting the food on the weekend before Thanksgiving, we are requesting mainly “staples” that are most needed. A partial list of suggested items is included below. Take advantage of all the “buy 1 get 1 free” sales and bulk discount store purchases! Gift certificates and cash donations are also very welcome. Fresh, natural wreaths , plants and centerpieces will be on sale after all Masses on November 29 and 30th. All proceeds go to the Women Center, a not for profit organization that provides counseling and support services to women with unexpected pregnancies. They offer referral services for alternatives to abortion as well as assistance with clothing, food, baby items and other basic family needs. MOMS & TOTS Moms and Tots, a play group for parents, caregivers and their young children (ages from birth to early elementary school), comes together on certain Friday mornings, 10:00—11:30 a.m. Below are dates we will meet: November 21—We will have a Thanksgiving Feast. Please bring a healthy snack to share. December 5—We will make a Christmas craft. December 19—We will have a Christmas Party. Please wear red & green and bring a healthy treat to share. All parents, grandparents and caregivers with young children are invited to join in. All are always welcome for these Friday gatherings! It is a great way for young children to have a “play date” and for families to network. To get the most up-todate information or if you have questions, please call Marie Fricano at 847-573-9745. November 16, 2014 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 10 We have a beautiful tradition at St. Mary of Vernon of sharing Christmas with the less fortunate. This year we will again offer our people the opportunity to give a Christmas present to a needy person who might otherwise be forgotten. We have over one thousand names from Sharing Hands, St. Angela School and Catholic Charities Lake County Services. You are invited to pick a name and buy a gift for that person, wrap it, and bring it to church on Gift Sunday, December 6 & 7. Please do not be late with your gifts—our truck delivers them to Waukegan immediately after sorting on December 7. Gifts can be delivered early, either to the Parish Office or at church the weekend of November 29 & 30. Name tags will be available in the back of Church the weekends of November 22 & 23 and November 29 & 30. Please attach that tag firmly to your gift, as it is the only identification we have to get the gift to the correct person. Gift certificates are also welcome and acceptable. If all the tags are gone when you approach the tables, please consider buying a “generic gift”. Regrettably, people sometimes take a tag and do not bring back a gift, so these generic gifts help make up the shortfall. Just attach a tag with information as to the contents of the package, eg., “Male, adult, size XL sweater” **Volunteers are also needed after the 11:15 Mass on December 7 to sort the gifts and load the truck. Many SMV families make this a fun tradition—it’s a great way to get in the spirit of Christmas. SHARING HANDS 2014 CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKET PROGRAM Each year the Sharing Hands ministry provides a Christmas food basket and gifts to a number of needy families in our area. This year approximately 100 families have been signed up for this special program. The gifts for the families are acquired through the ‘Gift Sunday’ program, but we also need adopting families to donate food baskets for these families. If you are interested in providing food for one of these families in our community, please sign up on the forms in the red folder located on the reception table in the narthex. You will be contacted via letter with the details of the family, suggestions for food items, and drop off details. The client families will pick up their gifts and food baskets on Saturday, December 13, at the Parish Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All the donated food baskets need to be dropped off that morning, December 13, between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. prior to the recipient family arrivals. Please indicate on the form the size of the family for which you would like to shop. Food certificates (Jewel, Garden Fresh, Mariano’s) along with your food choices will help supplement future needs as well. All groceries must be contained in either a box or basket and labeled with the family’s ID # (which will be noted in your letter) to avoid any mix-ups. If you have questions or need further information, call Frank Ruder at 847362-9509. Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping to provide a better Christmas for the less fortunate in our area. November 16, 2014 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Sharing Hands Food Pantry Item For November: Soup Please bring your donations to Mass or to the Sharing Hands drop-off door on the side of the Parish Center (please call for the daily code). Therefore, to devote time or attention to anything else was foolish. As time progressed, this fervor receded a bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if we should take them to heart. What should we do when we hear that the day of the Lord will come upon us “like a thief at night”? (1 Thessalonians 5:2) Does this mean we are to stop our longrange goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund? Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, living like children of the light and illuminating the world around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and security in Christ Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
