Students Shine at Spring Arts Fest
The Saint Viator resource center transformed into an art gallery last May for the Spring
Arts Festival, as parents, grandparents, siblings, faculty and students themselves perused
selections of students' work.
They found a wide variety of pieces to take in, including large and small works done in
2-dimensional black and white, as well as color; photography, ceramics, sculpture and oil
painting.
The visual arts portion of the Spring Arts Festival traditionally kicks off the afternoon, as
guests see the entire body of students' work --- including band, dance, choral and improv
comedy selections --- from their studies in the fine arts curriculum.
A pair of outside judges decided best in class of the six media, as well as best in show at
the visual arts show. They included Suzanne Renner, an art instructor with Northwest
Suburban High School District 214 and former Saint Viator art teacher; along with Chris
Trausch, an art teacher at St. James Catholic School.
The Best in Show Award went to Soyoung Oh '12 for her oil painting, “Trapped and
Restless,” for her interpretation of all the cultural barriers she has had to overcome as an
international student.
Fr. Egan also served as a judge, selecting a digital photo taken by Samantha Scanlon
'12 as the 2010 President's Purchase Award.
Class award winners included: 2-D black
and white: 1st, Kathryn Augustyn '11, 2nd
and 3rd place to Louis Capozzoli '11. 2-D
color: 1st, Danielle Zalusky '11, 2nd and 3rd

Artist Award: Alyssa Abay '13.
Band Awards
More than 80 members of the concert, symphonic and jazz
bands --- and their parents --- met for the 15th annual banquet
held this year at the Millrose Restaurant in South Barrington.
Band Director Tom Seaman, who also celebrated his 15th year
with the program, congratulated the students on a year of high
achievements for the band.
He recounted their second place finish in their class at the State
of the Art competition for band programs at Catholic high
schools across the Chicagoland area. He also pointed to their first
place finish in woodwinds, which he described as “a first in a
number of years.”
At the Jazz in the Meadows festival at Rolling Meadows High
School, the band placed fourth overall in their class, which was a
high mark for the band in recent years, and “overall gave one of
the best performances that I can remember.”
Seaman described this year's group of 18 seniors as
“outstanding leaders” and a “big reason why we've been able to
accomplish all that we have, all four years you've been here.”
The seniors returned the sentiment by awarding Seaman and his
wife, Kelly, with tickets to a performance by the Dave Brubeck
Quartet, Nancy Wilson, and the All Star Jazz Band Quintet at
Ravinia, along with dinner for two at its Park View Restaurant.
A highlight of the evening came when outstanding students
were recognized in each band. Congratulations to the following
nominees and winners: Concert Band: Most improved
nominees: Jaehwang Park '12, Kyong Yoo '13, Christine
Southall '12, Anthony Cataldo '12 and Michael Escarda '12.
Winner: Kyong Yoo. Lion Award nominees: Michael Escarda

Spanish Students Step Outside
AP Spanish students saw their classroom expand beyond the walls of Saint Viator last
spring when they traveled to Chicago's historic Pilsen neighborhood.
Teachers Janet Tan and John Fuja accompanied the group of 12 students on their trip
into the city. They were met by Alejandro Morales, a staff member of the Resurrection
Project, which tries to help many of the newly transplanted residents from Mexico
assimilate to life in the United States.
Its staff does everything from help them find housing and jobs, to teach them how to
keep a checking account and manage their finances.
“We wanted a chance for the students to put the Spanish they had learned in the
classroom to use,” Tan said.
Morales served as a tour guide, and spoke entirely in Spanish. To their surprise, the
students understood him.
He told the group of Pilsen's rich history and of its many improvements made to the
area over the last decade. He also pointed out some of its popular landmarks, including its
vibrant artwork seen on many of the building walls.
The works had been done by Hispanic artists and had been commissioned by Pilsen
officials to portray meaningful images for the Mexican people. The most popular image
that resonated with Saint Viator students, and Mexican residents in the area, was of Our
Lady of Guadalupe.
Their trip included lunch at a traditional cantina that offered them albondigas
(meatballs), arroz (Mexican-style rice), nopales rellenos, (stuffed cactus pears), pollo con
mole (chicken in mole sauce), enchiladas and fresh fruit.
After lunch they stopped at a panadería (bakery) where the students bought dessert,
before stopping at the dulcería (candy store), where they bought all sorts of Mexican
candy.
“The students had a great time,” Tans said. “I plan to go back next year in the fall with a
new group of students.”

Special Faculty
Honors
At the end-of-the-year faculty luncheon,
the Rev. Robert M. Egan, C.S.V.
announced faculty and staff milestone
years of service, as well as several awards
for standout teachers.
Social Studies teacher Tom Nall was
named a “Teacher of Distinction” by the
Coca Cola Scholars Foundation for his
role in inspiring his students to achieve
great things. He was nominated by Janice
Guzon ’10, herself named a regional Coca
Cola Scholar by the foundation and
awarded a $10,000 scholarship. As part of
her award, she was asked to nominate an
inspiring teacher who made an impact on
her high school career.
Scanlan Center Director Nancy Rosean
won the school’s first “Greatest Gift
Award,” given to the teacher who reflects
God’s love in extraordinary ways, by
teaching students to love God and other
people. Upon receiving the award, her
colleagues gave her a standing ovation. A
$500 monetary award will be donated to
the tuition assistance fund in her name.
The afternoon --- and school year --concluded in the traditional way, of
awarding the Fr. Louis Querbes Award to
the one faculty member who best
exemplifies the spirit of the St. Viator
community. Faculty and staff members
vote on the award, and this year it went to
the Rev. John Van Wiel, C.S.V. He too
drew a standing ovation from his
colleagues.

Vicariate Youth Leadership
Awards
Seniors who typically work behind the scenes were honored in April by the Archdiocese
of Chicago at the 12th annual Vicariate 1 Youth Leadership Awards Dinner, in their efforts
to recognize and affirm outstanding youth leaders.
The Saint Viator students all were recognized for their work in peer ministry and their
involvement in campus ministry projects.
They included: Sarah Balas, Alex Cutrone, Colleen Dahmer, Lauren Drolet, Alex
Nowakowski, Richard Hutyra, Tim Ivers, Colleen Kenyon, Maggie Lakowske, Sarah
Liedlich, Steven Patzke and Maura Wolfe.
“I believe it is so important to recognize the leadership development of teens within
high school programs,” says Betsy Fons, campus ministry director and former youth
ministry official with the Joliet Diocese. “It is through their participation in Campus
Ministry that they experience personal growth in faith and a richer understanding of
Catholic tradition.”
More Saint Viator students were recognized at the same dinner for their volunteer
efforts at their respective parishes.
“Too often today, teenagers receive recognition only when they are involved in
unhealthy or negative behaviors,” Fons adds. “We believe that teens deserve to be
recognized for all the positive contributions they make. Many of these contributions
occur right in our own parishes and high schools.”

Ms. Betsy Fons, Steven Patzke, Mr. Tim Masterton.

A Foundation of Service
By: Betsy Fons, campus ministry director
The Class of 2010 is the first graduating
class that participated fully in the new
Christian service program requiring 25
hours completed during each of a student's
four years at Saint Viator.
As part of the Christian service
requirement, students are asked to write a
2-page reflection paper each year. Seniors
were asked to write personal reflections
about how their experience with service
will help them fulfill the profile of a Saint
Viator graduate.
If the content of these papers is any
indication as to the effectiveness of the
Christian service program, then it appears
the school's investment in service has paid
off. Here is a sampling of their thoughts:
“Living in the 21st century, there are so
many technologies available for people to
use to get information and make
judgments,” writes Alexandra Dalton.
“However, serving others allows us to
break through those judgments because
we are able to work with people directly.”
“I will continue to embrace and live out
the profile of a Saint Viator High School
graduate,” writes Rachel Nagengast,
“because a Saint Viator 'lion' and service
go hand in hand.”
“Fulfilling the service requirement
helped me develop a sense of pride in
what I was doing,” writes Eric Primdahl.
“When people asked me why I would be
at a service project I would tell them I was
completing a service requirement. By my
senior year, I would just tell them I am
doing service with my friends from Saint
Viator, leaving out the fact that it's
required.
“Representing your school is one thing,
but when you attach the fact that you are
completing service while representing
your school,” he adds, “nothing else can
top that.”
“I did enough service hours over four
years to realize the true benefits of why
they are required,” writes Michael
Cervantes-Lara. “It's not a punishment,
but rather it is a way to truly discover who
you are and discover in many different
ways how to become closer to God.”
Variety Show was a Smash!
Saint Viator's fourth annual Variety Show took place April 23 and drew more than 300
attendees. They got their money's worthy, seeing 13 student acts, including some that
featured students in bands, singing and playing guitars, as well as dancing and even
performing magic.
While the variety show has become something of a tradition, it still showed it could
evolve with the times, when audience members voted via an online text message system.
First place went to a senior choral members Hayley Nagengast and Katie Deger,
accompanied by Jonathan Metzinger on piano, on the song, “What Is This Feeling?”
Fans voted the band, “Stormfront” in second place, featuring freshmen James Pickering
and Ryan Sevilla playing original music.
In third place, fans voted for a group of band students who have formed their own rock
band. “Chris & the Bean Stalk” features juniors Tim Mack and Ryan Yueill and seniors
Mike Bensen and Chris Banaszak, playing original music.
Maeve Tibbetts does a guitar solo

Viator Voice Draw National Attention
The staff of the Viator Voice wrapped up another successful year with their long awaited
Senior Edition. Following with tradition, the 54 page final copy had students and their
families reading all the news that was fit to print, namely seniors' wishes, their awards and
college choices.
However, the newspaper staff had even more to celebrate. They recently were honored
by two high school press associations, both in state and national newspaper contests.
The Voice staff received a Silver Certificate from the Northern Illinois School Press
Association and a First Place award from the American Scholastic Press Association,
which is a New York-based organization that reviews more than 2,000 student newspapers
each year to come up with their top ranking list.
“This is especially impressive considering that students do not receive course credit for
their work on the Viator Voice, as some student journalists do,” says English teacher Chris
Paolelli, who serves as moderator for the newspaper. “Our students are not being graded
on their efforts, and they still produced superior work.”
The following students also received special recognition from NISPA for individual
efforts: Janice Guzon '10-Blue Ribbon, Editorial Writing, Danielle Di Silvestro '11Blue Ribbon, Advertisement Design, Michael Benson '10-Honorable Mention, Review
Writing, Brooke Bonk '10-Honorable Mention, Opinion/Column Writing, Clare
Dussman '10-Honorable Mention, Photography, Martha Ryzner '10-Honorable Mention,

Physics Moves Beyond Classroom
The end of the year was a busy one for Saint Viator science students. The
honors and regular physics classes went to Great America, for a different
spin on a field trip: they studied the physics of roller coasters. A total of 165
physics students took data and measurements at the park, such as calculating
the height of the attraction, how fast they were going and the energy at
various points on the ride. Back in their physics lab the next day, they
processed their data using principles that they had learned during the year.
“While riding roller coasters is always fun, physics students now can
explain the sensations they are experiencing on these rides,” says physics
teacher Liz Englbrecht. “Once you know physics, it makes a trip to the
amusement park a completely different experience.”
Another end-of-the-year assignment for physics students was to make
mousetrap cars as an alternative assessment to their energy unit. Their
assignment was to build a car powered with a standard mousetrap that would
go exactly 10 meters.
On race day, awards were given for the best design and best looking car.
Caitlin Poltzer '11 and Marissa Mueller '11 won in both categories, but all
the students enjoyed the unit.
“Mouse trap cars are a great experiment for beginner to experienced

teaching the basics of physics.”
In April, teachers Jan Grana and Patti Schroeder accompanied juniors Christine
McKee, Dana Franceschini, and Madeline Wimberly to attend the Conference on
Careers in Search of Women at the Argonne National Laboratory.
They spent the day touring the facilities and meeting in small panel groups with noted
women scientists in the science, math and engineering fields.
“They were able to explore career options and speak with scientists who could tell them
