JULY-AUGUST, 2004
PREZ SEZ
A lot of the things I’m going to say should have been
said at the Throwdown, but since I suffer from “mike
fright” - Gary has to be my “mouthpiece” and I didn’t
let him know what I wanted to say….(I hate that he has
lost his ability to read minds, don’t you, Wanda??)
There are so many people to
thank for making this Throwdown the success that it was.
The “Party Planner” is recognizing you in her article, but I just
have to mention a few of you.
Susan Bradley, “Party Planner
Extraordinaire” is numero uno on my list. She outdid
herself this time! First of all, she picked a great committee to help her with the details, the totin, the liftin,
the cleanin, and all that stuff in between, and they did
her proud! She worried so much about the party that she
ended up in the hospital, scaring the bejeepers outta us!
Susan, would you mind not being so dramatic next
time….we’re too old for your shenanigans!
you, this would have been just another party….You
made it an experience, and one that we won’t forget anytime soon. Some of you continued partying at the Bessemer Reunion at the Vestavia Lodge, I know, I saw you
there myself!…Whatever was I thinking….but, hey, we
had fun and that’s what it’s all about!
Last, but certainly not least, our wonderful DJs. Cliff
Capps, Carl Simonetti, and Larry Huff (Glenn Walls was
out of town, playing for the Concord, NC club – and I
know they loved having him there!) What great music…
I was told more than once how lucky we are to have such
a superb lineup of DJs. The great thing is we know it –
so don’t forget to show them how grateful we are for
their contribution to our club!….Guys, what more can I
say, you did us proud!
It was so good seeing all the out-of-towners….There
were only a very few that I didn’t know!…They came
from Orlando, Rome, Atlanta, Columbus, Chattanooga,
Memphis, Ashville, NC, and all points in between! That
just “goes to show you” what hitting the road can accomplish, you get to know the nicest people….And see what
happens when you say “we’re having a party”… they
show up in bus loads!!
Next up, Linda Wagner. How creative!…You honored
our DJs more perfectly than the best PR person in the
land could have! People loved the decorations so much
they were trying to take them home, unfortunately, some
succeeded. If you took one of the table decorations, (I
know it wasn’t malicious, you just want to copy the idea)
please return it, we are definitely going to recycle
them… Linda, we will never let you move out of the
area, we’re going to use and abuse you, so just get used
to it!
Shag-A-Rama plans are being firmed up. Judy and
Wanda are making it look so easy that we tend to forget
how much hard work goes into the planning and bringing
it to fruition. The only thing missing is you. You have 2
things to do….get your reservations made at the hotel
(Boardwalk Beach Resort) and your registration/ticket
money in before the price goes up August 1st. Couldn’t
be much easier than that now could it?!! Hey, you can
buy me a drink with the money you save….Now ain’t
that a great idea?
For each of you who came, brought your “old family
recipes, handed down for generations,” and made our
guests feel so welcome, I want to thank you. Without
Until next time, drive safely, drink responsibly and
boogie your butt off…….aj

What I Did on my Summer Vacation.
By Rod Penuel
It all began in Mobile – the Mardi Gras party, the battle of the bands, the
wonderful beach music. Three great bands under one roof –
when one stopped, the next would begin. We were bouncing back and forth in that
large warehouse building from one band to the next like so many ping pong
balls – soaking up that wonderful music, not wanting to miss a single note spilling
out from saxophone, guitars, keyboards. I may not have actually been in heaven
that afternoon, but I’m convinced that I caught a glimpse of it from where I
stood.
Before I get too far ahead of myself, a little explanation is in order. Mobile native Linda Wagner was gracious enough to invite me to attend a Mardi Gras
weekend with her last February – she billed it as a “warehouse party”. And our
club’s very own David and Dianne Myrick extended an invitation to stay at their
beautiful home while there. With such wonderful company, the weekend would
have been great even if nothing else had been on
the agenda.
Aaaah – but there was. Did I mention the bands?
With our new mantra of “you can’t get enough of a good thing”, after the party was over, Linda and I immediately began plotting strategy on how to recreate what we had just experienced. After all, Mardi Gras is only a
once-a-year affair. By immediately, I mean as we were leaving the Myrick’s driveway on our way back to Birmingham.
“Wouldn’t it be great”, one of us asked innocently enough, “if we could find where one of those bands were
playing in the near future and – like – go see them again!” The idea was breathtakingly simple – and also, as it
turned out, deceivingly so. After a search of the internet
(is that a wonderful invention or what?) It was discovered that while, yes indeedy, we could find future concert
dates, what we also discovered was that they were in locations that were far, far away. Think, 500 miles-one way.
Think, pack your lunch. Think, well you get the idea.
I’ll “cut to the chase” – we found a Beach Music concert in Carolina Beach, N.C. that featured, get this, the
Coastline Band, the Band of Oz and the Embers. Sweet!! And for those of you who might be unfamiliar with the
world of Beach Music, simply put, that’s about as good as it gets. The “no brainer” aspect of the decision as to
whether to go and have a large time or stay home and mow the grass quickly became apparent. We put the transmission into ‘D’ (for dance) and just boogied all the way across Georgia and South Carolina until we got to the Atlantic
Ocean and couldn’t boogie any further! That would be Carolina Beach of course.
What a great time! The 11-hour drive (yes, I said eleven) went by as quickly as a jell-o shooter goes down.
The weather was fantastic, and the music…well let me tell you about the music.
When I was a teenager, the recreational director of our little south Alabama town had this wonderful habit of
bringing in bands like the Tams and the Swinging Medallions – to keep us kids out of trouble I suppose. Didn’t
work…but I digress. The point is that we would look forward to these events like a 6-year old anticipating Christmas morning. We would begin the evening by dancing, but sooner or later we would all gather as close to the stage
as possible and just…listen. Great stuff – and great memories. If you’re beginning to get the idea that this was one
more example of another gray-haired, middle-aged baby boomer trying to catch a glimpse of the past…well, maybe.
But guess what fellow baby boomers, it just may have worked! For like a moth drawn to a bright light on a dark
night, by the end of the afternoon, Linda and I were right there on the FRONT ROW.
From the Editor:
Joanie Henley
Greetings Shaggers – Need to apologize for the lateness of the newsletter, but with
all the storms, and such, we have had electricity problems every night for the last
two weeks, soooo this newsletter has been in the making for over two weeks (in between outages), but do not fear, it should be one to enjoy.
The first important thing is the DJ Throwdown that was held on June 26th at the
Elks Cloud Room. It was GREAT!! Below are some of the praises that Susan and
Jane and their “crew” got from some of our visitors.
Hey A.J.:
What a wonderful party you and your club put on last Saturday. The D.J.s were great and the facility and dance floor
were just perfect. Wish we could find something like that over here. We had a great time and everyone was very friendly
and, being our first time, we felt like part of the family. The food as really scrumptious and you had sooooo much! I know
a lot of hard work goes into these parties and we just want to thank you for inviting us (ShagAtlanta). Ya'll come!!
Thanks again, Deanie & Joe Woodie
Hi Joanie; Thanks for keeping me in the know... Sure was the best DJ Throw
Down -- you folks have ever had. I had the best time. You guys make me feel real real welcome whenever I am in town and I just want to thank all of you for that.
Cy Miller Asheville, NC
All Bi-City Boppers who attended the D.J. Throwdown agreed that it was a blast! The
music could not have been better, the food was wonderful, and the warm welcome we
received made it a day to remember. We can hardly wait for Shag-A-Rama! We put
your Shag-A-Rama flyer out on our table at our June dance, and will put one in our
July newsletter and on the table at the anniversary party. We usually have a good
crowd at that party, so it should get a lot of exposure. Again, thank you for a great time at the D.J. Throwdown. – Nancy
and Mike Bryan
We had lots of door prizes and lots of winners!! A few of the winners are:
Johnny Grill from Avon Park, Florida won the Shag-A-Rama ticket.
Mike and Nancy Bryan from Columbus GA Club – Picnic for two basket
Francine Wheeler BSOB Member – Split the Kitty - $238.00
The Yard/Rummage sale planned for July 17th at Spud’s has been rescheduled for September. Time restrictions with the DJ Throwdown made it virtually impossible for us to set up committee’s, pick-up merchandise, get
permits, etc. The weather (we hope) will cooperate, cooler and less WET. Continue cleaning out those closets,
garages and basements. Will keep you posted as more information is provided. Items not sold will be donated
to charity.
Mark your calendars for August 28th. This is the date for the Cooper Lake Party. To recap the days events
there will be barbecue, baked beans and slaw provided by the club. Bring your “water toys”, i.e., ski’s, tubes,
floats, rafts, etc, Leon said that they have a pontoon and ski boat to add to the enjoyment. So come and shag,
swim, relax, or whatever is to your liking and enjoy the day. The party will start at 11:00 AM and go till 8:00 PM.
Directions are in the flyer in this newsletter. Signup sheets will be out on Tuesday’s starting August 1st so we
can plan ahead for the caterer. You are encouraged to bring a snack or dessert and your coolers with your
“favorite” beverage.
Of course, last but not least, Shagarama, October 6th – 10th, the best party in the world. We have a great
lineup of DJ’s – Billy Waldup from Roebuck, SC and Ted Whitlock from Concord, NC along with our own great
BSOB DJ’s. Check out our flyer in the newsletter for more details. The ticket prices go up to $45.00 after August 1st. So now is the time to buy those tickets and make those room reservations.
