Canley Heighlights www.canleyhts-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Principal’s Address Phone: 9724 3320 Volume25 Issue 5 1 April 2016 Important Dates Tuesday 5th April School Photos Friday 8th April Final Day Term 1 Celebration of Learning at CHPS Students: This week I had the privilege of meeting with our 2016 School Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects to have our annual lunch meeting to discuss their new roles as school leaders, strengths of the school and areas that we can work together on improving. Our student leaders discussed their responsibilities as a school leader and demonstrated their understanding of looking at our school with a “big picture” mindset. During our discussions the students shared the following: Lucas has enjoyed handing out awards, Katie is learning to become brave, Kim and Fecitta have enjoyed talking at school assemblies, and Ryan has enjoyed his additional role on the SRC (school representative council) and Lyndell has enjoyed running major assemblies and having other students look up to her as a role model. Great beginnings for 2016! Staff: This week I was fortunate to accompany 9 CHPS teachers from stages K-6 to attend an inspirational Technology day at the offices of our ICT Business partners. The company has funded our TLC (Technology Learning Centre) program on a Wednesday afternoon during 2015-16. Our business partners are a privately-held company founded in Amsterdam in 1989 by two traders working on the open outcry floor of Europe’s first options exchange. Today they have offices in Amsterdam, Chicago, Sydney, New York, Hong Kong and Zug, and employ more than 450 people. The company has two businesses, which operate independently of each other: Financial Markets and Asset Management. CHPS is extremely fortunate to have the support of such a dynamic and innovative team The idea of giving back has been at the heart of their philosophy from its inception. Through their Charitable Foundation they support with money, talent and time, as our school reflects and shares their business philosophy: to offer opportunities and create conditions so that people can develop to their fullest potential. Parents: Wednesday 27th April Students Return Term 2 Parents who have been attending our free weekly English Language Lessons had an opportunity this week to venture outside of our school setting and put into practice their English skills by having a relaxed morning tea together at one of the coffee shops in Canley Heights. It was great to see these parents have forged a friendship with one another and took the time to celebrate with the teacher and Mr Le (Family and Community Engagement Officer) the end of their Term 1 program. Congratulations to all of you and we look forward to seeing you for Term 2. Everyone has a job at CHPS! Just a refresher that everyone has a job to do at CHPS: Students are here to learn. Teachers are here to teach and to be engaged in lifelong learning . Parents are here to support their children’s learning and support the school in teaching their children. If we focus our energies on “Educating” our students and supporting the learning process, then together we can all achieve so much and at the end of the day our children will have the best opportunity for a successful, purposeful and happy future. Principal’s Address cont’d CHPS Parent Code of Conduct I would like to remind our school community again of our policy on Personal behaviour :- As parents you are our students' biggest role models. Accordingly, the school expects a high standard of personal behaviour from parents when on school grounds. Interaction with staff, other parents and students.:Parents are expected to interact civilly with staff, students and other parents at all times. Abusive language, raising your voice, insulting, intimidating, harassing or violent behaviour to anyone on school grounds is not appropriate. Whilst interaction between students can be against the school rules, it is not appropriate to discipline another parents' child whilst on school grounds. Physical contact can be an assault and is a serious matter. Parents with concerns about the interaction between students on school grounds (principally at drop off, collection times, assemblies and special events) must address their concerns to their child’s class teacher. Change to First Aid procedures at CHPS From next Monday 4/4/16 the school will commence our new procedures regarding first aid at school. Should your child present to the first aid room in the office area, the school will contact you immediately via phone informing you of your child’s health condition. Following on from this information you will be asked to guide the school on the path of health care you wish the school to take. The school needs all parents to continue to provide us with up to-date phone numbers and emergency contact details to ensure that this system works. CHPS School and Community Action Team Reminder: Expression of Interest to be a Representative Member of the School and Community Action TeamThe school invites parents to complete the Expression of Interest Form hard copy distributed recently to school community or available on school website/skoolbag app, should you wish to lodge your interest in representing our diverse parent community at CHPS for a position on the team/board. The school requests that you either email your Expression of Interest to the school email www.canleyhtsp.school.nsw.edu.au, attention Principal, Elle Hidson or return the hard copy to the front office to the box marked “ School Community Action Team”. End of Term 1 Next week is our last week for Term 1,2016. We wish our community a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you return on Wednesday 27/4/16. Mrs E Hidson Principal Page 2 Canley Heighlights Deputy Principal’s Message This year we have decided to run a camp for students in Years 3-6 at Myuna Bay Camp. This 3-day camp Sport and recreation camp is a great opportunity for children to make amazing memories, make new friends and experience nature and new challenges. Qualified instructors from NSW Sport and Recreation run the camp along with the supervising teachers. The children will participate in a variety of activities including bushwalking, cookouts, fishing, orienteering, rock climbing, basketball, tennis, archery, putt putt golf, craft activities…… to name but a few. If you are interested in your child attending the camp, but want to find out more, then th come to our information session after school on Tuesday 5 April in the school hall from 3.10 - 3.45. I will be ready to give you lots of information and answer your questions. Contacts It is very important that the school has current contact phone numbers, emergency contact names and phone numbers and current addresses for each of our students. Should any of these details have changed, please contact the school office to provide an update. Please remember that if addresses have changed we require proof of address in the form of a document that has been posted, eg utility bill. School visitors As you are aware the school works hard to provide a safe environment for our students. The Department of Education has set out procedures that schools must follow to help ensure student and staff safety. Once all the children are in class it is expected that All visitors to the school, including parents, must report to the office so that staff are aware of their presence in the school. All visitors must sign the visitors’ book and wear a badge or sticker that identifies them as an approved visitor. People on school grounds who do not have a badge or sticker are to be directed to the school office immediately. For example, if a parent wants to bring up lunch or check up on their child for some reason, they MUST report to the front office first. I’m sure you will agree that the safety and security of the students is vitally important and I know that you will assist us by following the above procedures. Miss S Langworthy Deputy Principal Page 3 Canley Heighlights Preschool News! The children celebrated Easter by making Easter hats, Easter cards and rabbit faces on cups. They loved singing “Hot cross buns” and “Little Peter Rabbit”. The children were very excited when the Easter bunny left some Easter eggs in their cups and in the playground. They loved egg hunting. Everyone had a great time sifting flour, measuring milk, cracking eggs, carefully forming pancakes in the pan and flipping them over to make them golden brown on both sides. We also spent some time blogging about our cooking experiences and writing about the things that were fun, challenging and interesting. This is just a reminder that there is NO TLC NEXT WEEK as it is the last week of the term, however the same students are able to participate next term when we start sewing and robot building! Peer Support Program 2016 Every year Canley Heights Public School participates in The Peer Support Program. This program provides a fun and engaging environment for students to address important issues such as bullying, relationships and self-image. The program is designed to give young people the skills to deal with life experiences, develop a sense of worth and belonging, and to encourage taking responsibility for decisions and actions. The Peer Support Program allows Year 6 students to become trained Peer leaders and facilitate activities with small groups of younger students. A teacher supervises each group which includes 2 Peer Leaders and mixed age groups of 10-13 students from Kindergarten to Year 5. The module we are teaching in Term 2 is called ‘Living Positively - Optimism’. The aim of this module is to help students develop the skills and knowledge to approach life with a positive attitude, use their strengths, engage in enjoyable activities and show gratitude to others. Through this program we aim to allow students to build positive relationships, develop skills, enhance mental health, take personal responsibility, embrace lifelong learning, develop key concepts and encourage participation. Page 6 Canley Heighlights Kindergarten News Kindergarten have had a busy and exciting first term. All the children have settled into their classes well and have enjoyed learning many new things including how to get along with others, how to start to read and write and all about healthy foods. The Kindergarten Transition program which has been running all term has been very beneficial in helping with the smooth transition from home to school or preschool to school. Next term the playground times will revert back to normal so the children can learn to interact and play with children from other grades. Recess will be from 11.00 -11.20 and Lunch from 1.00-1.15 (eating time) 1.15-1.55 (playing time) A parent survey will be sent home to Kindergarten parents soon to ask for their views on the Kindergarten Transition Program. The staff have reflected this term that students and parent/carer road safety continues to improve however we would like all students and families to use the crossing area either as a pedestrian or as a driver, in a safe and respectful way. Remember to never just walk or run out onto the crossing. Drivers are to remember road safety rules around schools and not exceed the speed limit. It is important to be conscious that children are using the crossing as drivers you need to stop and wait for children. As role models for your children, please use the crossing provided rather that jay walk further down the road to get to your car. Our students and families safety needs to be everyone’s responsibility. School Photos Just a reminder that school photos are on Tuesday 5th April. All students need to be at school on time and in full school uniform. All money needs to be returned to school before photo day. There will be no change given., so please ensure the correct money is enclosed. If you have any questions, please come and see us. Page 10 Canley Heighlights
