Paul Getty Museum / California Tour Nativity School! This is an exciting time as we begin the process of welcoming new families to Nativity School through formal tours. We will be doing individual tours this fall and early winter to introduce interested families to life at Nativity School. This provides an opportunity for parents to see the learning process grounded in our Catholic faith. Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions for parents. We would love to partner with you as your child embarks on this educational journey. If you would like schedule a tour please call the school office and speak to Mary Jo at 699-1311. We look forward to meeting you! Respect Life A Veteran’s Day Prayer Lord God, Almighty Father, Creator of mankind and Author of peace, as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we are grateful for and inspired by those veterans who have given their lives for our country. And so we ask you to bless the members of our armed forces. Give them courage, hope and strength. May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love, and compassionate healing. Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light. And may we all bravely face the challenges ahead. To you be all glory, honor, and praise, now and forever. Amen. Kate Wollan, Principal Sandy Kane, Assistant Principal Nativity Blood Drive - Monday, November 9, 1:30-7:30pm Please consider giving the gift of life by participating in the Blood Drive on Monday in Steiner Hall. Contact Annmarie McConville at 695-0773 to sign up for a time slot, or just show up on the 9th. Thank you! Book Discussion, Part II - November 23 This month we are continuing to discuss, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), a beautiful encyclical letter by Pope Saint John Paul II. We will meet again, Monday, November 23 from 78:30pm in the Gathering room. Desserts will again be served, so please RSVP so there will be enough for everyone. Books are still available for $2.50, so please join us even if you couldn’t make the first round. All are welcome! Contact Karen McCann with any questions at [email protected] or 612-964-4522. Book Fair - November 11-12, 15 The Nativity Book Fair is coming! The fair will be open in the school auditorium November 11-12 during conferences and after mass next Sunday, November 15 from 9am-1:30pm. A large variety of new and used books for children and adults will be available for purchase with proceeds directly benefitting our classrooms and school library. Books make great Christmas gifts, and volunteers will be on hand to assist you. See you at the book fair! Grandparents Apostolate Friendship ________________________________________________________________________________ "Two are better than one: they get a good wage for their labor. If the other falls, the other will lift up his companion. Woe to the solitary man! For if he should fall, he has no one to lift him up." – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 ~ Or ~ “Fly from bad companions as from the bite of a poisonous snake. If you keep good companions, I can assure you that you will one day rejoice with the blessed in Heaven; whereas if you keep with those who are bad, you will become bad yourself, and you will be in danger of losing your soul.” - Saint John Bosco Jesus, please help me to recognize the friends in my life that lead me to you. Fall Event - November 23 Mark your Calendar and Plan to Attend: Grandparents Apostolate of Sts. Joachim and Anne invites all grandparents to 1.5 hours of enrichment, encouragement, prayer, and fellowship highlighted by a presentation on The Biblical Call of Watchmen for Strengthening the Family by the Rev. Fr. John Klockeman, of The Saint Paul Seminary. Sign-up begins at 8:45am in Steiner Hall. Refreshments will be served. Contact Lilee Perera at 414-9367 or [email protected] with any questions. Archdiocese Prayer for a New Archbishop Good and Gracious God, giver of all good gifts, grant to this Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis an Archbishop who will unite us in our diversity and call forth those gifts with which you have so richly blessed this family of faith. May he be a Shepherd after your own heart, a faithful and merciful servant, whose gentleness will bring healing and comfort, and whose courage will inspire. May his life radiate the Joy of the Gospel and his unfailing confidence in your providential care lead us all to a renewed sense of trust. May he be a prayerful instrument of your grace in our lives, empowering us to live out our shared vocation as missionary disciples. We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Publishing is not guaranteed, and is generally granted on a first-come, first-served basis, giving priority to official Nativity events. Submissions can be sent to [email protected]. –Isaac Huss, Bulletin Editor Stewardship November 1, 2015 Current Fiscal YTD Total Stewardship $33,194 $462,238 Budget $505,827 Plate $1,663 $25,718 $26,827 $173 $3,598 $3,358 Hunger Box Did you know that Nativity offers Online Giving? Visit Parish.nativity-mn.org/online-giving to sign up securely using a checking account, credit card, or debit card. You can give one-time gifts or arrange a recurring payment. You can also choose to give to the general (stewardship) fund or specify the Forward With Faith Capital Campaign or the Nativity School Scholarship Fund. This past Sunday, electronic gifts accounted for $13,291 or 40% of total stewardship gifts. From the Hip Stewardship Sunday In my column in last week’s bulletin, I shared a Psalm about recognizing God as the source of all blessings and returning those God -given gifts in service and worship to the Lord. Likewise, in 1 Peter we are told that whatever talents the Lord has entrusted to us, we are to use them to serve others. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. --1 Peter 4:10 Nativity parishioners are known for their generosity in sharing their time and talent in service to others, whether serving at the County Fair, volunteering at Nativity School, or praying in the Adoration Chapel. Likewise, Nativity parishioners have made a historic mark in the last decade by supporting three capital campaigns to strengthen, expand and enhance our church and school buildings. Whether you have “given back” in time, talent, treasure, or all three--thank you for this remarkable return on God’s blessings to you. This Stewardship weekend, I will be asking you to extend your generosity, once again, in support of Nativity’s many missions and outreaches. As you may know from following Nativity’s annual financial statements, stewardship giving has lagged without any increase for many years. For the first time in over a decade, Nativity faces a moderate deficit in 2016. So, I invite your generous support once again: If you are a pledging steward, please consider a 5% increase in your giving. If you have never completed a pledge card, please let this year be the first. Together all our gifts add up and enable this church do amazing things for the Kingdom and in service to others. Please pray this week about how your service to others, to God, and to his Kingdom can be enhanced by your stewardship giving in the coming year. May God bless you abundantly. From the Hip continues on page 5 NELC In an effort to continue to improve communication between the NELC, our parents, and the community, the Nativity Early Learning Center has expanded our forms of communication to now include Facebook! Creating an NELC Facebook page is a great way to connect to parents who are already using social media. While we’ll still make use of traditional forms of communications such as brochures, the website, etc., parents and other community members can now receive school updates, view pictures, and otherwise be kept up to speed with what we’re up to in real time. “Like” our page to see our posts in your news feed. You can find us at: https://www.facebook.com/ NativityELC. Thank you! From the Hip NCCW Quarterly Deanery Meeting - November 19 The 2nd Quarterly Meeting of the St Paul Deanery Council of Catholic Women will be held at the Holy Family Church in St. Paul/Mendota Heights at 8:15am on Thursday, November 19. The day will include a business meeting, Deacon Dan Gannon presenting on end of life issues, Mass, and lunch and will finish at about 1:15pm. Cost for the day is $13. RSVP by November 16 by calling Jane at 261-2534 or Mary Ann at 771-9976. All women of the parish are invited to attend. Music Choir Anthems - Sunday, November 8 Praise to the Lord Distler McKay Carol Barnett (continued from page 3) New Statues It is with great gratitude that I announce that Nativity parishioners John and Catherine Michel have donated two new statues for the Heritage Room, located at the northeast corner of the church. A statue of St. John Vianney, patron of parish priests, has been placed in the small alcove immediately to the right side of the Heritage room as you enter (left side in the photos below). St. Paul, patron of our Archdiocese, is in the left alcove as you enter the room (right side below). The statues were both hand-carved and hand-tinted in Northern Italy from wood, St. John from the Conrad Moroder Statuary Studio and St. Paul from the Pema Studio. Concert at Nativity - Saturday, November 14, 2pm Two Rivers Chorale, under the baton of Timothy Sawyer, presents A Timeless Christmas, Christmas through the Ages on Saturday in the Church. The concert will feature the warm and festive sounds of the Christmas season with timeless a cappella motets and festive carols for choir and piano. Admission if free (no RSVP or tickets necessary) but donations are kindly appreciated. As you may know, the Michels were also responsible for the donation that made the Heritage Room possible, as well as other artistic and architectural contributions to our parish, including the stone monument signs for the parish and the school. Thank you, John and Catherine, for your gracious gifts and may God bless you for your continued generosity! Linda gleans wisdom from the Catholic Church as she emphasizes the importance of parents' role as primary educators of their children. Linda is a Nativity Parishioner, mother of seven, and founder of Fortifying Families of Faith. The group will meet in Steiner Hall eight times in two sessions, one before Christmas and one after. We will attempt to cover the first four chapters by meeting November 4, 11, 18, and December 2. We will break for Christmas and then continue again January 6, 13, 20, and 27 to finish the book. A one-time fee of $25 is requested to cover the cost of the book. Children are welcome! It’s not too late to join, so please contact us with questions or to sign up: Teisha Devine (651) 301-1547 or Katie Sampair ( 651) 726-4134. For more information on Linda's work, visit http://www.fortifyingfamiliesoffaith.com/about-us.html Faith Formation Pray for our 8th Grade Confirmation Candidates! Please keep our 8th Grade Confirmation Candidates in your prayers, as they will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday, November 14 at the Cathedral. We’ve created prayer cards for each Candidate as a way to help connect them to the community and benefit from the prayers of the entire parish. Please pick up one of the cards, located in a basket outside of the Adoration Chapel, and keep them in prayer as they now make their final preparations for that Sacrament, as well as afterwards as they seek to live out their mission as fully initiated Catholics.
