Zeeland, a province that means business 6 © Eddy Westveer for DNA image bank at www.laatzeelandzien.nl Zeeland literally means “sea land”, not surprisingly as half of the province consists of land and the other half of water. The contours of Zeeland and its horizon have been formed over the centuries by the interplay of sea, water, wind and currents. Zeeland is positioned strategically between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, on the Westerschelde estuary. This province is perfect for doing business, working and living! Zeeland has excellent transport connections, clean beaches kilometres long, two seaports, some major players in the process industry, a strong SME sector, a well-developed logistical network and tourist industry, and plenty of affordable space for new developments. There are plans for expanding many of these parks in the next few years so there will be plenty of room for new businesses. These companies included Dow Chemicals, Thermphos, Pechiney, Total, Zuid-Chemie and Broomchemie. All these companies still exist, even if they are now sometimes known by another name, and they are still profiting from the benefits of this area. After all, this port area is positioned strategically between the key ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, on the mouth of the Westerschelde estuary. The deep fairways and the lack of locks at Zeeland Seaports make for excellent nautical access while there are also good connections with the European hinterland thanks to a sound network of roads and railways, inland waterways and piping. 46 Zeeland Seaports is one of the fastest growing ports in Europe Over the past forty years the port area Zeeland Seaports plays an important part is a joint scheme in which the province of of Borsele, Terneuzen and Vlissingen has in the regional economy as around 250 Zeeland and the municipalities of Borsele, grown to become the third seaport of businesses are located in the port area, Terneuzen and Vlissingen participate. That is why the port company is supporting the development of the Westerschelde Container Terminal (WCT). The plan is for the WCT to have a dockside two kilometres in length, which will be able to accommodate five large container ships at the same time, and a capacity of two million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). Other companies have container operations in Vlissingen-Oost. The storage and transhipment company Kloosterboer has now opened its own container terminal, focused on handling refrigerated containers, and the firm Verbrugge has plans for the construction of the Verbrugge Container Terminal (VCT). 48 Focus on sustainability park where the waste material of one busi- The Zeeland Seaports company feels it ness is being used as the raw material for is not just responsible for the economic another business. development of the ports, it also attaches a high priority to due consideration for the In addition, Zeeland Seaports is investing in environment and investment in sustainabi- the sustainability of the logistics.
