When we are at our best as family members, we see how these relationships give us a glimpse into how the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit love so deeply and awesomely. But when we are “off our game” with family members, we experience the darkness of sing and the painfulness of being broken. During this Year of Mercy proclaimed so by Pope Francis, I, as one who shares with you in sinfulness and brokenness, invite you to seek out the Lord with me and find God’s healing presence always available to us. Throughout the year, there will be opportunities and invitations to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation, to be anointed with God’s healing grace, to be part of days of reflection and recollection on the mercy of God, to participate in our Lenten Mission on Mercy, to pray both individually and as a community of believers about mercy, or to just sit down over a cup of coffee with some wonderfully trained pastoral councilors like Fr. Bob Rohrich, Fr. Larry Gorski, myself, sister Jude of Sacred Heart in Palos, Mrs. Cathy Barrett, Monsignor John Canary or Dr. Mary Amore – to name just a few. All these contacts and healing work will be done with the utmost seal of confidentiality. Another painful area in our journeys here on earth sometimes has to do with marriages. Misunderstandings on what the Catholic Church teaches about marriage, marriage preparation, divorce, the annulment process, and who can celebrate the sacraments have brought about a lot of pain, hurt, anger and stress for many Catholics. I am very, very proud of our Parish Pastoral Staff. They are well-trained by myself and the Archdiocese, hardworking, and pastorally sensitive to dealing with the reallife issues that impact many in our parish family. They share my passion and convictions in trying to help others as Jesus would – not by simply quoting “laws” to them, but by using our theological views and teachings to be merciful, to help people practically live their faith in helpful ways. Mrs. Sue Raymond wears many, many hats in our parish family and on our pastoral staff. However, I am most proud of Sue’s ability to work with individuals and couples to prepare for marriage spiritually, to help coordinate their Church ceremony, to make their wedding preparations fun as well as a very meaningful and moving part of their journey. And she helps them make sense of all the necessary Church paperwork. In my 30 years of priestly ministry, I can honestly say that Sue is one of the best lay ministers pastorally sensitive in using Canon Law in understandable ways with our young (and sometimes, older) couples. On the other side of the coin, Sue also ably assists some of our people in their journey through the different annulment processes and will continue training with the Archdiocese to keep up with recent annulment process changes (see page 5). Please know that you are in good hands with her and with all of our staff if you have any questions or wish to know more. They love what they do; they love to serve you and the Lord; and they continue with me to search out new and more creative ways to make faith real and more meaningful in your lives. Finally, just a couple of events I would like you to remember, celebrate, and “put on your internal radar screens….” On Thursday, December 17th, 2015, Pope Francis celebrated his 79th birthday. May God bless him with many more years of health, love, and strength to serve Him and His people. Please add your own prayers for him. Remember, that on Saturday, January 2, 2016 our Saturday evening Mass time will change to 4:30 P.M. This will be a year round change. And in May of this upcoming year, 2016, my mom, Ann, will turn 90 years old and I will be ordained 30 years. We would like to celebrate these milestones in our lives with you! The style and manner of this celebration is yet to be determined, but we do know we wish to share Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ for sure. For it is through Him, with Him and in Him that we have found the gift of you all in our lives. Have a happy and holy New Year with God’s Blessings, Fr. Kurt and the Pastoral Staff of St. Patrick’s Parish Family The Matthew Kelly Book, Rediscover Jesus was donated to our church by a generous parish family. Please feel free to take a book home with you this Advent. You may find something unexpected to awaken your spirit within its covers. Visit: www.DynamicCatholic.com to learn more about Matthew Kelly and other Dynamic Catholic book titles and Matthew Kelly’s funny and inspiring “not to be missed” CD recordings. Australian born Kelly’s speaking career began at the age of 19 and has not slowed down since. SPRED is a program of religious education specifically designed to meet the spiritual needs of persons with developmental disabilities. Through the participation in a SPRED community of faith and experience of friendships on a one-to-one relationship, our friends are better able to celebrate the sacraments and enter into the worshipping experience of the whole Church. SPRED Community Sessions are scheduled to begin in February, 2016 and will be held every other Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Community Sessions will be held at St. Pat’s ministry building located on Cass Street adjacent to St. Patrick’s Church parking (200 East Illinois Street, Lemont, Illinois). This does not prove true for all annulment cases, but for many, it can shorten the process significantly. Each Diocese across the country will need time to properly train its process facilitators and field workers to best serve their people according to these changes. You may read more on the Catholic New World website through the following link: http://www.catholicnewworld.com/cnwonline/2015/1129/13.aspx Please call Sue in the Parish Office for more information on the annulment process.
