March Program:
Donna Howell-Sickles
Our March program will be a demo by Donna
Howell-Sickles. Her work is in several
galleries, the main one being Davis & Blevins
The Main Street Gallery in Saint Jo, TX.
Donna was inducted into the National
Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame in
recognition of her work with imagery
celebrating the cowgirl.
In the Western art genre, Donna Howell-Sickles has taken the image and idea
of the cowgirl beyond charcoal lines and into reality. Howell-Sickles has been
exploring the layers beneath the cowgirl’s engaging exterior for more than 30
years. A vintage postcard from the 1930’s featuring a cowgirl with ruby red
lips sitting atop her horse instilled in Howell-Sickles a lasting fascination with
the cowgirl spirit. The cowgirl in the postcard was at once both familiar and
unreal. This dichotomy in the imagery has fueled Howell-Sickles’ artwork, and
inspired her to create images of women that are both real and myth. HowellSickles’ artwork captures the quintessence and timelessness of the cowgirl
spirit.
Donna says, "My fascination with the cowgirl image began in my last year of
college. I received an old postcard from a friend in a typical art student trade.
He brought over a large box of stuff including some of his own pottery. Near
the bottom of the box were several old postcards, one of a cowgirl c. 1935
seated on a horse captioned
"Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from
the Ole Southwest". The image
spoke to me and I had no idea
why. Although I had grown up on a
farming ranching operation in Texas
we never really thought of
ourselves as Western. I
surrendered to the attraction and as
I used the Cowgirl in my art and I
slowly filled in the blanks about my
fascination with the imagery."

SWS has been invited by management at
NorthPark shopping center to do a painting demonstration on Saturday, March
15, from 3—5:00 PM and Beverly Boren
has volunteered to represent us. Her
demo will be near the red sculpture in
the new section of the mall, so come out
to cheer Beverly on and enjoy a demo by
one of our best artists.

Paris Plein Air Art Show
Twenty-four painters traveled to Paris, Texas last September to participate
in the SWS Fall Paint-out. Joe McCord of the Plaza Art Gallery in Paris has
invited us back to exhibit our work. There will be an opening reception at
5:00 on Thursday, March 6 at the gallery on the west side of the square.
The show will run through Friday, March 28.
Many of you have been asking about our
annual membership exhibition and I am
happy to announce that the Eisemann
Center in Richardson will be this year’s
venue. Fealing Lin is our juror for the
show and will be doing a workshop as
well in September. The prospectus will
be on-line soon with all of the details, so
be watching for it.
Bill Johnson has received a huge response from members wanting to participate in a plein air painting group and
is organizing paint-outs for this spring.

Hermine Salinger, sws
SPOTLIGHT ON ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Hermine Salinger has checked off an important goal on her ‘bucket list’. At
age 97, she achieved SWS Signature status!!
Hermine grew up in the Texas Panhandle but came to Dallas to attend
SMU, where she met her husband. She raised four children and was very
active in the community. Her first foray into creative arts was through
embroidery and needlepoint. She decided she wanted to try painting. She
met Bud Biggs through her son-in-law, who had used Bud to develop
advertising for his business. She started attending classes with Bud. In the
first class, he provided art supplies and told her to paint the projected
picture. She later learned that the others in the class, who had many years
of experience, had bet that she would not last a month. But she proved
them wrong.
She joined SWS when Bud Biggs became President. Her first Board position
was providing refreshments. She moved up to Board President one year when the elected President
unexpectedly took a job in California. Over the years, she and her husband opened their home to entertain
visiting workshop artists and for SWS Christmas parties.
Hermine loves painting mountains and the Prairie. Lately, she has been stepped beyond her comfort level,
painting people and abstracts. She has studied with many artists including Leo Smith and Pat Kochan.
Painting has become a very important part of her life. Since she has started painting, she has made many
wonderful friends. And painting provides her with the ability to go into her home studio and lose all sense of
time.

Nel Dorn Byrd and Priscilla
Krejci Set a Pace For Us
Twenty years ago while in Switzerland with a Rob Erdle Watercolor
Painting workshop, I became aware
of the camaraderie of Nel Dorn Byrd
and Priscilla Krejci. They were not
roommates, but always painted in
the same vicinity.
Some mornings as most were headed for their first cup of coffee, Nel and Priscilla
were met in the hallways with their first painting of the day. Yes, they had already
been out to paint, and one time in Venice they painted with the temperature below
freezing at that hour. They put the rest of us to shame.
Priscilla tells how their relationship got started: “I’ve always admired Nel’s ability in
watercolor, so when I decided to take it up in the early ‘90s I looked to Nel for advice. She was an excellent teacher. She encouraged me to try painting outside.
Our first plein aire painting expedition occurred in Plano. She whipped out these
wonderful paintings and I struggled with watercolor pencils on a 3 x 4 inch tablet.
Mine were total disaster but I found it was great fun! Nel taught me the importance
of painting fast and capturing that first impression”.
Phasing out her registered nurse career, Priscilla, a Texan by choice, has become a
full time artist. Somewhat self-taught, she has also studied with local artists and attended many watercolor workshops nationally and internationally, resulting in her
coveted AWS Signature membership.
Pursuing a career in art, Nel Dorn Byrd, native Texan, followed up her college studies
with local watercolorists, and national and international workshops, also gaining her
AWS Signature designation.

keep them from meeting regularly to paint
on location. They
each paint fast and
small enough to finish
a sketch in 30 to 45 minutes, then turn to another subject. Sometimes they just do a morning session, or
they may return to a place after lunch in the area or
having their own sack lunch. They find good subjects
in the nearby communities, or may travel to another
vicinity for different attractions. They do laugh about
the failures when they attempted to depict a Ferris
wheel in a small carnival. On the other hand, they had
great fun painting at the local band
concert housed in a gazebo.

years, “I paint on a very low folding
stool and lay my palette, paints and
paper on the ground.” Priscilla reports that she, on the other hand, is
constantly “trying to reinvent the
wheel” by experimenting with the
newer equipment on the market.

Michael Holter's painting, "The Veil Has Been
Torn" was juried in as one of 80 paintings to be
shown in the 2014 Transparent Watercolor
Society of America 38th Annual Exhibition. He is
also presenting his popular Creating Stunning

Muriel Mimura was honored to receive Third
Place in the Society of Watercolor Artists’ Membership Show for her painting “Red Flowers on

Carmen Kelley had three paintings accepted in the Pens & Patterns Zentangle Exhibit at the
Brandi Cooper Studio located in Valley View Center. Her “Tangled Fruit” won the People’s
Choice Award.
Jimmy Magouirk’s watercolor "Hard Life" was accepted in the Plano Art Association's "Black
History" exhibit
Karin Michele Anderson has 8 watercolors hanging at the Richardson Heights Recreation
Center through March 11th.
Betty Jameson had a painting accepted into the Missouri Watercolor Society's Watercolor
International, Winston Churchill Museum and Library, Fulton, Missouri April 1-May 26, 2014
and had a painting accepted into the Southern Watercolor Society's 37th Annual Exhibit at
the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center, Kerrville, Texas April 1-27, 2014.
