Of course, the specialized press hasn’t shied away from the challenge. At the risk of being repetitive we would like to join this celebration from a wargamers point of view. Thus we have dedicated our dossier to the momentous and titanic battle for the capital of the German Reich, which marked the last act of the drama that was bleeding white Europe since 1939. In the next issue we will meet again with another dramatic momentum in History: the Battle of Trafalgar. So far, nearly sixty miniature manufacturers will be attending the show, including important names such as Langton, Peter Pig, Redoubt Enterprises, Old Glory, Gripping Beast and Grand Manner. Those of you who want to fill the empty spaces on your bookshelves or who simply want to see the latest books you’ll have your chance to do so at the displays set up by Caliver Books and Hersant’s Military Books. At the gaming tables you’ll be able to watch exhibition games or participate in open games. This is a great chance for visitors to see different gaming systems in action or to try out new periods. SELWG will also have a Bring & Buy area, painting and modelling displays and historical re-enactment groups. This show, along with Salute in the spring, is one of the most important wargame events of the year in the UK that has been taking place for more than thirty years (the first show was in 1973)! You won’t want to miss out on this! For further information, visit: www.selwg.com CAPTAIN ALATRISTE At the end of July, shooting for the movie “Captain Alatriste” with Viggo Mortenssen in the role of Alatriste was finished. Captain Alatriste is well-known by Spanish fans, but some of you may not be familiar with him. Alatriste is a literary character created by the Spanish novelist Arturo Pérez Reverte. He’s a veteran of the Tercios of Flanders that has seen it all. Cold, silent and deadly with a dagger, he made a living as a thug and mercenary on the streets of Madrid in the 1720s at the beginning of the reign of Philip IV. The adventures of Alatriste are narrated by Iñigo Balboa, a boy taken in by the captain after the death of his father, an old friend. This is the most expensive Spanish film production to date and all types of means have been used to make it. The battle scenes (Breda and Rocroi) promise to be really spectacular. From what we’ve been able to find out, the producers and the director have taken the trouble to consult specialists to make sure that the apparel as well as the weapons and their proper use were historically correct. The premiere in Spain will be in March 2006 according to the producers. We still haven’t received information on its international release, but having Mortenssen in the lead role will guarantee that it’ll spark some interest on the other side of the Atlantic. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more details. For now, here are a couple of photos from the filming to whet your appetite. 4
