Usher in Spring and START! Walking
Downtown.
By Alyssa Jones, Communications and Events Manager, Battle Creek
Downtown Partnership/Battle Creek Unlimited,
[email protected]
Whether you work downtown, live downtown or play
downtown, you are invited to walk with your neighbors on
Wednesday, April 10 at 11:30 A.M. on the START! walking
path in downtown Battle Creek.
The START! walking path was created in conjunction with the
American Heart Association in 2010. The 1.3 mile path around
the heart of downtown was established to encourage downtown
employees to get out and engage in healthy lifestyles. “The
American Heart Association will celebrate National Walking
Day on April 3 however the participation has been lower locally
as many are vacationing for spring break” mentions Alyssa
Jones, communications and events manager for the Battle Creek
Downtown Partnership. “This year, we’ll participate a week
later on April 10 and see if we can’t increase participation.”
It was a chilly April in 2012, but
the sun was out and the START!
walking path had some foot
traffic. Join in this year on April
10 at 11:30 A.M.
The path is available 365 days a year, but on this date the
community is encouraged to walk the 1.3 mile path in downtown
Battle Creek beginning at 11:30 A.M. If you are interested in
walking with a group, meet outside Two West Michigan (corner
of Michigan Avenue and Capital Avenue) at 11:30 A.M.
otherwise you can jump on the path and walk in any direction at
any time.

Celebrate Spring! Spring into the Arts
Art Walk Scheduled for Friday, May 17.
By Alyssa Jones, Communications & Events Manager, Battle
Creek Downtown Partnership/Battle Creek Unlimited,
[email protected]
Hands down, Spring into the Arts is my favorite
downtown event to organize. The attendance continues
to grow, everyone is ready to do something outside and
it’s a great opportunity to showcase downtown and the
businesses who call downtown home.
Spring into the Arts is an annual event which pairs downtown businesses with local and regional
artists and successfully combines all the things you love about downtown: art, music, friends,
conversation and commerce. Whether you are a novice, enthusiast or just like to see and be
seen, the place to be in May is Friday, May 17 from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. for the seventh
annual Spring into the Arts.
While the event is still in the early stages of planning, there are a few tidbits I can share with you.
You’ll need to make a plan of attack in order to absorb the art on display in more than 25
locations.
Chalkers participating in Chalk it Up! Chalk Walk will return to decorate the downtown
sidewalks near Festival Market Square (corner of McCamly and Jackson Streets). If you
are feeling creative, chalk will be on hand for you to create your own masterpiece.
It’s National Bike to Work Day – to help celebrate; you are invited to ride your bike to
Spring into the Arts. There will be a special parking area just for you.
As you can see, the Spring into the Arts is taking shape and will be an evening of entertainment
no matter where you start and finish. If you have yet to experience this fantastic event my advice

The search is on for acoustic musicians and volunteers. If you are interested in playing music or
being a volunteer for this event, please contact Alyssa at the Battle Creek Downtown Partnership
at [email protected].
Spring into the Arts, is one of two seasonal art walks taking place in the spring and autumn. The
event is free and open to the public, brought to you by the Battle Creek Downtown Partnership,
an initiative of Battle Creek Unlimited, in coordination with area art organizations, downtown
businesses, and art patrons.
Additional details for Spring into the Arts will be available soon on

downtown Battle Creek.
Angelo, opened in downtown Battle Creek primarily
because they wanted to give back to the community. “Michael and I have traveled a lot for his
music and have seen a lot of cool towns – we are invested here in the community and we wanted
to see downtown Battle Creek come alive – and that is exactly what’s happening now.”
Café located at 91 W. Michigan Avenue in
When you walk into the café, you can expect to be treated as if you were a guest in the Angelo’s
home. With a walk through the door, you’ll be greeted with a huge smile then offered great food,
great service and participate in great conversation alongside a lot of laughter. If you have an hour
to spare, grab a board game from the back hallway and challenge a stranger.
The menu offers deli-style sandwiches, Panini’s, homemade soups, salads, quiches and desserts.
In addition, a variety of vegetarian and gluten free selections. For the most part, the café is open
Monday thru Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, but if the lights are on, the café is open!
Looking for a great restaurant to have a homemade Italian dinner? Look no further. On the 1st
and 3rd Wednesdays of each month, the café serves homemade Italian dinner accompanied with
live music from Michael Angelo.

dinners as well as new menu items. “My mother always said ‘People are good at heart’ and I
believe it!” Maryann says with a sparkle in her eye. “The generosity, friendship and compassion I
have seen from our community through the café have been amazing. We truly have angels
amongst us – everyday people that do extraordinary things.”

Creek Farmers Market is Saturday, May 4 at 9:00 A.M.
The Battle Creek Farmers Market has called downtown Battle Creek home for over 100 years.
The Market is conveniently located downtown at Festival Market Square, on the corner of

options within walking distance, including the adjacent Hamblin Avenue parking ramp, which
offers free parking for the first hour.
The Battle Creek Farmers Market accepts cash, credit and debit cards, Bridge Cards and
Double Up Food Bucks, a project of the Fair Food Network. If you are anything like me, I
never have cash, but using your debit card at the market is easy. Simply present your card to the
processing booth, indicate how much you intend to spend and the card will be processed for that
amount. You’ll then be given a piece of paper to show the vendors as your form of payment.

During July and August the Festival Market Music Series will accompany the Battle Creek
Farmers Market. Spend your lunch hour shopping the market and have lunch while listening to
