I am an adventurer at heart; I always find I am at my best on the road. Though there were language barriers (I took Latin in high school), all my other senses were heightened and exhilarated. I want so much to be a local rather than a traveler. I found this trip much different than any other adventures I have taken in the past. This was the 2007-08 Board of Directors PRESIDENT Bridget McMullin, ASID first time I was truly taking a holiday. Yes, I still carried a backpack (the easiest way to store and go on cobblestone); but I was in places much longer, I stayed in accommodations my mother would be proud of… I wasn’t traveling on a shoestring anymore. With my shoestrings left behind, I was able to enjoy much more luxurious interiors abroad. I found myself privy to new technologies I hadn’t seen on my trips in the past. Sometimes I question the technology of the Europeans. Fours hours to do one load of laundry, no dryers to speak of, and PRESIDENT-ELECT Christina Thomas, ASID COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR Kristine Monsen, ASID FINANCIAL DIRECTOR Michael Stevens, ASID MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR Bonnie Brinser, IP Member Sherwin Williams PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR Candice Smith, Allied Member ASID LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR Nadine Louw, Student Member ASID what’s up with the showers? Either there is no water pressure or I find myself wrestling with a hand held shower head that refuses to cooperate. Yet they seem to get so many other things right. Bigger isn’t always better. They know how to maximize space. All outlets have on and off switches. Hotel rooms have master switches to turn off all the electric on the room when you are out site seeing, which is a great way to maximize energy efficiency. Toilets have two flush options. Expensive gas means conservation and an abundance of mopeds, motorcycles and public transportation galore - a plus for any traveler. Escalators with sensors run only when someone is accessing them. Plastic grocery bags cost money to use. I enjoyed the tour of the Guinness factory with a farmer from Germany who produces his own methane from cattle and crop waste: he uses this energy to run his farm, and has become a local source of energy for his village in northern Bavaria. It’s a big world out there, and I think our attitude of the past is that it is all for the taking. Hopefully, the past few years have made us realize that our sources our limited and the need for new alternatives is desperately here. Designers are part of that cycle. Not only do we need to design new technologies that are friendly to the environment, we must also sell products that will enhance our client’s environments and keep them and the planet safe. I wish you happy travels this summer, wherever the road or sky takes you! TOC receives requests for home improvements from residents in the Parkside section of Philadelphia. It has only three paid employees and relies on the support of volunteers, donations of supplies, and financial assistance. Our day’s work was spent at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Crawley, a retired couple who have lived in their home for over 30 years. The work included scraping off old paint, priming, and applying a fresh coat of new paint to the wonderful architectural columns and millwork detail on the front porch. A new porch roof was also required to replace the existing tin roof. Lastly, the underside of the roof was enclosed with plywood to provide a more finished look. The addition of a donated flatbed of begonias and impatients as well as hanging planters from our ASID members helped to beautify the garden and porch areas. Everyone worked diligently scraping, painting, measuring, sawing, hammering, planting, and weeding. Even Mr. Crawley, who is 86 years old, worked alongside us “youngsters” by scraping and painting. Although the day turned into a hot one with temperatures rising to 85 degrees, everyone’s spirits were high. Along with the hard work performed, there were many laughs. We were told this was the first time Mickey Mouse (note the t-shirt) joined the work force! There will be another ASID community service day with TOC on T h u r s d a y , September 11th. Contact Irene Black at the ASID PA East office [email protected] (215) 568-3884 if you can volunteer your time and/or donations. We hope you can participate with helping our neighbors in the Philadelphia community! 6 • Pennsylvania East Chapter • Access to Design • Summer 2008 ASID/IIDA Joint Statement Regarding “Parker Plan” By Michael Alin, Hon. FASID, Executive Director In its recent newsletter, the Interior Design Protection Council claims to have “revealed” that ASID and IIDA are preparing a joint legislative strategy referred to as the “Parker Plan.” Statements made by the IDPC regarding a meeting between ASID and IIDA to develop a joint legislative strategy and the existence of an agreement between the two organizations to pursue 47 practice acts in 2009 are blatantly false. There has been no such meeting or agreement or discussions of such an agreement between ASID and IIDA. ASID and IIDA do meet periodically to discuss issues relevant to the interior design profession. To date, however, there has been no such meeting regarding joint legislative strategy. W hen Quality Counts... Count on Madsen • Custom Kitchens, Bathrooms & Furniture • Exquisite Designs It is the policy of both ASID and IIDA to allow legislative initiatives to be driven by interior designers at the local level. ASID and IIDA caution members and the design community from believing third party statements about the organizations’ plans or policies, especially those issued by known opponents of interior design legislation advocacy. • Exceptional Service & Installations Showroom Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9 to 5 pm • Wed. night 7 to 9 pm • Sat. 9 to 3 pm 2901 Springfield Road, Broomall • 610-356-4800 • www.madseninc.com Summer 2008 • Access to Design • Pennsylvania East Chapter • 7 Member Recognition & Town Hall Meeting By Bonnie Brinser, IP Member Our chapter’s Member Recognition & Town Hall Meeting was held on April 23rd at the Ligne Roset showroom in Manayunk. To Saturday: 8 am - 6 pm Sunday: 8 am - 6 pm that end, ASID created the STEP program to provide a broad perspective of the issues and information pertinent to the NCIDQ exam. Registration deadline: August 8 The STEP workshop is periodically conducted nationwide SID provides the STEP workshop program to help A candidates prepare for the NCIDQ exam. The program has been developed by educators and designers to provide participants with the chance to experience exams patterned after the newest NCIDQ. Through this process, participants can analyze their skills and assess those areas that require further preparation. Most people who take the workshop express feeling more confident and comfortable as they prepare to sit for the NCIDQ. ASID has long recognized the key role that the NCIDQ examination plays in design practitioners’ career plans. Passage of this rigorous test signifies the hallmark of professionalism in the interior and is comprised of 20 hours of instruction over a 2 1/2-day per iod. Participants have the opportunity to exper ience practice exams patterned after the newest NCIDQ and, with the guidance of experienced instructors, determine which areas require further preparation. Workshop participants are provided with a comprehensive workbook that includes practicum exercises and multiple-choice sections similar to those in the NCIDQ exam. These practice tests are administered and thoroughly reviewed during the workshop. The workbook also includes helpful practice exams that participants may take home with them. Participants are encouraged to have their STEP workshop experience 4 – 12 months prior to taking the NCIDQ exam. This allows sufficient time for resources to be acquired and skill areas requiring further preparation to be fully studied. Please note that space is filled on a first come/first served basis. To ensure a spot, you should register sooner rather than later. There is the possibility that a workshop will be cancelled if we receive less than 10 registrations by the registration deadline. The full workshop fee is $300 for ASID members and $400 for non-members.
