P r e s i d e n t ’ s M e s s a g e
Fresh from a two week trip abroad, I am happy to be home. I am an adventurer at heart; I always
find I am at my best on the road. Though there were language barriers (I took Latin in high school),
all my other senses were heightened and exhilarated. I want so much to be a local rather than a
traveler.
I found this trip much different than any other adventures I have taken in the past. This was the

first time I was truly taking a holiday. Yes, I still carried a backpack (the easiest way to store and go
on cobblestone); but I was in places much longer, I stayed in accommodations my mother would be
proud of… I wasn’t traveling on a shoestring anymore.
With my shoestrings left behind, I was able to enjoy much more luxurious interiors abroad.
I
found myself privy to new technologies I hadn’t seen on my trips in the past. Sometimes I question
the technology of the Europeans. Fours hours to do one load of laundry, no dryers to speak of, and

isn’t always better. They know how to maximize space. All outlets have on and off switches. Hotel
rooms have master switches to turn off all the electric on the room when you are out site seeing,
which is a great way to maximize energy efficiency. Toilets have two flush options. Expensive gas
means conservation and an abundance of mopeds, motorcycles and public transportation galore - a
plus for any traveler.
Escalators with sensors run only when someone is accessing them. Plastic
grocery bags cost money to use. I enjoyed the tour of the Guinness factory with a farmer from
Germany who produces his own methane from cattle and crop waste: he uses this energy to run his
farm, and has become a local source of energy for his village in northern Bavaria.
It’s a big world out there, and I think our attitude of the past is that it is all for the taking.
Hopefully, the past few years have made us realize that our sources our limited and the need for new
alternatives is desperately here.
Designers are part of that cycle. Not only do we need to design
new technologies that are friendly to the environment, we must also sell products that will enhance
our client’s environments and keep them and the planet safe.
I wish you happy travels this summer, wherever the road or sky takes you!

The Other Carpenter Community
Service Porch Project
By Kristine Monsen
On Saturday, June 21st, ASID members Nicole Flisher, Kerry
Forbes, Kristine Monsen, and Sally Riley gave the morning to
volunteer both time and talents to work alongside David and
Craig from The Other Carpenter (TOC), a not-for-profit community service organization. TOC receives requests for home
improvements from residents in the Parkside section of
Philadelphia. It has only three paid employees and relies on
the support of volunteers, donations of supplies, and financial
assistance.
Our day’s work was spent at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Crawley,
a retired couple who have lived in their home for over 30
years. The work included scraping off old paint, priming, and
applying a fresh coat of new paint to the wonderful architectural columns and millwork detail on the front porch. A new
porch roof was also required to replace the existing tin roof.
Lastly, the underside of the roof was enclosed with plywood to
provide a more finished look.
The addition of a donated flatbed of begonias and impatients as well as hanging planters from our ASID members
helped to beautify the garden and porch areas.
Everyone worked diligently scraping, painting, measuring,
sawing, hammering, planting, and weeding. Even Mr. Crawley,
who is 86 years old, worked alongside us “youngsters” by
scraping and painting. Although the day turned into a hot one
with temperatures rising to 85 degrees, everyone’s spirits
were high. Along with the hard work performed, there were
many laughs. We were told this was the first time Mickey
Mouse (note the t-shirt) joined the work force!

ASID/IIDA Joint Statement Regarding
“Parker Plan”
By Michael Alin, Hon. FASID, Executive Director
In its recent newsletter, the Interior Design Protection
Council claims to have “revealed” that ASID and IIDA are
preparing a joint legislative strategy referred to as the “Parker
Plan.”
Statements made by the IDPC regarding a meeting between
ASID and IIDA to develop a joint legislative strategy and the
existence of an agreement between the two organizations to
pursue 47 practice acts in 2009 are blatantly false. There has
been no such meeting or agreement or discussions of such an
agreement between ASID and IIDA.
ASID and IIDA do meet periodically to discuss issues relevant to the interior design profession. To date, however, there
has been no such meeting regarding joint legislative strategy.

It is the policy of both ASID and IIDA to allow legislative

Member Recognition & Town
Hall Meeting
By Bonnie Brinser, IP Member
Our chapter’s Member Recognition & Town Hall Meeting was
held on April 23rd at the Ligne Roset showroom in Manayunk.
Over 50 members came out to celebrate their ASID membership. Everyone had a chance to mingle with old friends and
make new ones while enjoying great food and drinks. Members
were also able to tour the incredible Linge Roset showroom.
The theme of the evening was green design. Four companies
set up display tables for designers to view their green and
sustainable products. Following the Member Recognition was
the Town Hall meeting. Green designer, teacher, and member
of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council Cheri Privor of
Wright Design gave a wonderful presentation on sustainable
design. Thanks to all the ASID members that came out making
this an amazing evening.
A special thank you to Linge Roset for hosting the event and

By Mrs. G TV & Appliances, IP Member
Mrs. G TV & Appliances recently celebrated the grand
opening of their new designer showroom featuring The Living
Kitchen™ which showcases the latest Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. Mrs. G TV & Appliances is one of the few nationally
selected dealers to feature this in-store, living kitchen
concept, with the largest Living Kitchen showroom in New

The Living Kitchen is designed to present Sub-Zero and Wolf
brands in the environment in which they are meant to be experienced, showcasing the breadth of products and offering the
opportunity to interact with the appliances much like one

to see the full model line-up from Sub-Zero and Wolf with products incorporated side-by-side in a real setting, helping them
to visualize how these two brands might complement one
another in their own homes.
“We are very excited and honored to have been selected to
feature The Living Kitchen concept in our store”, said Debbie
Schaeffer, Owner & President of Mrs. G TV & Appliances. “We
have dedicated over 1,700 square feet of our showroom to The
Living Kitchen which truly has changed the shopping experience for our customers.”
Some of the new products on display in The Living Kitchen
include the recently unveiled Sub-Zero PRO 48 professionalstyle residential refrigerator, an induction cooktop from Wolf
that brings the popular European cooking method to North
America and a 15” wine storage unit.
Thomas J. Dolan, President of The Fretz Corporation, Debbie
Schaeffer, President & Owner of Mrs. G TV & Appliances and
Michael Broudy, Architect & President of the Broudy Group share a

The event raised over $120,000 and was a tremendous boost
for the ASID Foundation’s growing list of sponsored projects.
One of these projects, REGREEN was unveiled during conference. The ASID Foundation and the U.S. Green Building Council
partnered on the development of best practice guidelines and
targeted educational resources for sustainable residential
improvement projects. Your dollars have made a difference by
making such projects possible.
The ASID Foundation Board of Trustees wishes to thank all
donors, members who secured items, and to all who purchased
items. Your support has made a difference.

GETTING STARTED
ASID Connex allows members to connect with one another and
share information. The community is exclusively for ASID
members and is password protected. You don’t have to worry
about people outside of the Society seeing your profile,
message board posts or blog entries. ASID respects your
privacy. Your information will not be sold or used for purposes
other than occasional contact by ASID.
Now that you’ve logged in, you’ll want to begin exploring all
that Connex has to offer. Your first stop: Click the Profile tab at
the top of the page to review and update your personal information and profile. This information is vital to your Connex
experience. It’s your way of letting others know about your
interests, professional activities and favorite projects so they
can connect with you.
Follow these few, easy steps to get you started.
STEP 1. CREATE YOUR PROFILE.
1. Go to the Member Info column on the Profile page (the
second box on the left side).
2. Click “Edit” to add information about yourself and what
you’re working on. You do not have to fill in each field, only
as much information as you’d like to share.
3. When you’re finished, click “Save.” You’re all done. Follow
the same steps at any time to update or add to your Profile
information.
STEP 2. ADD A PICTURE.
1. Select “Update Picture” from your profile page.
2. Click on the “Browse” button to locate and select a picture
from your computer files that you’d like to use as your
profile photo.
3. Select “Save.” The maximum photo size is 800k. (You can
check the size of the photo by going to the file on your
computer, then r ight click on the photo and select
“Properties” from the pop-up menu.)
STEP 3. ADD PEOPLE TO YOUR NETWORK.
Creating a personal network is a great way to easily keep in
touch with colleagues and friends. From your profile, you’ll be
able to see right away whether someone is online and available
to chat.
1. Scroll down to the Colleagues Network box below your
personal information and click on “Add Colleagues to My
Network.”
2. Search for the person you’d like to add to your network.
3. Select “Add Me to Your Personal Network.” They will now
appear on your profile in the Colleagues Network area.
STEP 4. SELECT INTERESTS.
Identifying what design specialties and topics you are interested in will help people with similar interests find you.
1. Scroll down the Profile page until you see the “Choose/Add
Interests” box (in the right hand column).
2. Select “Choose/Add Interests.” You’ll see a list of interests
that are currently in use.
3. You can select one of these, then click the left arrow next to
the box to move it into your current interest area.

4. Don’t see anything on the list that interests you? Type in
your own interest topic in the “Other” field and click “Add
Interest.”
STEP 5. JOIN A GROUP.
Joining a group is an easy way to share information and
interact with people who share a common interest.
1. Select the Groups tab at the top of the page.
2. To see if a group already exists on the topic you’re interested
in, enter a keyword in the box at the top of the page and
click “Search.” The Search results will appear just below.
3. Click on the name of the group you wish to join.
4. In the Group Subscription box, select “Click here to join.”
You know that you were successful when that link switches
to “Click here to unsubscribe.”
STEP 6. CREATE A NEW GROUP.
Don’t see a group that meets your interests? Set up a new one.
1. From either the Groups page or the My Groups section of
your profile, select Add Group.
2. Fill out the form, click “Save,” and you’re all set. You now

mail public in the community. Others may wonder how they’re
going to organize their work, personal and network e-mails.
ASID Connex allows people to send you a message from within
the network, retaining your privacy and helping to keep your
electronic communications organized.
1. From either the People Search section on the homepage or
the People Search tab, type the person’s name you are
looking for and click “Search.” If you are in the Messages
area, you can also select “New Message/Find Community
Member” to get to the search page.
2. The search results are displayed. Select “Send Me A
Message” under their name.
3. The “To” line is already filled in. Fill in the “Subject” field.
4. If you want to attach a file, click “Add Attachment” then the
“Browse” button to locate and select a file from your
computer files.
5. Type your message in the large text box. You’ll notice the
text area looks very similar to Word or Outlook. There are
many familiar formatting options available. You can insert a
picture, create hyperlinks, use tables, even insert a flash file
if you like.
6. The “Send” button is above the text box. (You can also save
it as a draft or cancel the message entirely.)
7. When you receive a community message, a notice will be
sent to the e-mail listed in your record. There will also be a
notice in the My Mail section of the home page. Click on the
name of the sender or the subject to open the message.
STEP 7. JOIN A CURRENT DISCUSSION OR BEGIN A NEW ONE.
Sometimes the best ideas are sparked by a brief conversation
with another designer. When you join a discussion, you have
the opportunity to interact with other members from
throughout the country and across all areas of practice.
1. Click on the “Discussions” tab at the top of the page. A
current set of topics are listed there.
2. To join a conversation, click on the category name. A list of
current discussion threads will appear.
3. Click on the name of a Thread to see what others have been
saying.
4. To start a new discussion thread, select “Post New Thread.”
5. To search through all the threads by keyword, use the
“Search Threads” box to the right of “Post New Thread.”
6. If you’d like to create a new category, select “Add Category”
and fill in the information requested, enter the validation
code provided and click “Save.” Then click on the category
name in the discussion list and begin a new thread.
Once you’ve gotten your feet wet, you might want to try your
hand at these useful communication tools: Connex e-mail and
instant messaging.

INSTANT MESSAGING
Without having to download any software or sign up for a
service, ASID Connex lets you send an instant message to any
member who’s online.
1. From either the People Search section on the homepage or
the People Search tab, type the person’s name you are
looking for and click “Search.” You do not have to type the
complete name to get results, but the more letters you
include the more focused the search. If the person is in your
personal network, scroll to the Colleagues Network box on
your profile.
2. The search results are displayed. If the person is currently
logged on, the message “I’m Online – Chat With Me” will be
listed under their name.
3. Click “I’m Online” and an instant messaging box appears in
the upper left corner.
4. Type your message and hit enter. You’ll see it displayed in
the dialogue box above.
5. When the person answers your note, you’ll see their
response in the dialogue box. The conversation will continue
in this manner for as long as you both are free.

candidates prepare for the NCIDQ exam. The program
has been developed by educators and designers to
provide participants with the chance to experience exams
patterned after the newest NCIDQ. Through this process,
participants can analyze their skills and assess those areas
that require further preparation. Most people who take the
workshop express feeling more confident and comfortable as
they prepare to sit for the NCIDQ. ASID has long recognized
the key role that the NCIDQ examination plays in design
practitioners’ career plans. Passage of this rigorous test
signifies the hallmark of professionalism in the interior
and is comprised of 20 hours of instruction over a 2 1/2-day
per iod. Participants have the opportunity to exper ience
practice exams patterned after the newest NCIDQ and, with
the guidance of experienced instructors, determine which
areas require further preparation. Workshop participants are
provided with a comprehensive workbook that includes
practicum exercises and multiple-choice sections similar to
those in the NCIDQ exam. These practice tests are administered and thoroughly reviewed during the workshop. The
workbook also includes helpful practice exams that participants may take home with them. Participants are encouraged
to have their STEP workshop experience 4 – 12 months prior
to taking the NCIDQ exam. This allows sufficient time for
resources to be acquired and skill areas requiring further
preparation to be fully studied.
Please note that space is filled on a first come/first served
basis. To ensure a spot, you should register sooner rather than
later. There is the possibility that a workshop will be cancelled
if we receive less than 10 registrations by the registration
deadline. The full workshop fee is $300 for ASID members and
$400 for non-members. To register online, and to see more

The ASID Appellation and Membership Designations
Under ASID Bylaws, professional membership in ASID recognizes an interior designer as having completed a course of
accredited education and work experience in interior design
and successfully passing the National Council for Interior
Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination. These members
have achieved the highest levels of accomplishment and
knowledge in their field.
The consumer, the public, other designers and affiliated
professionals acknowledge the "ASID" appellation after an
interior designer's name as the hallmark of professionalism.

A professional member of ASID is the only member entitled to
use the appellation without stating his or her qualifying
membership classification, e.g., John/Jane Doe, ASID (FASID if
a fellow of the Society).
ASID members in other membership categories are permitted
to use the following designations:
Allied Member (Practitioner/ Educator/ International):
John/Jane Doe, Allied Member ASID
Student Member: John/Jane Doe, Student Member ASID
Industry Partner Member (Company): ABC Company,
Industry Partner of ASID
Industry Partner Representative (Individual): John/Jane
Doe, Industry Partner Representative for ABC Company
The membership designations must be spelled out completely.
(Note: "of the American Society of Interior Designers" may be
substituted for "ASID"). No modification or deviation is
permitted.
The appellation for professional members and the designations for other members may be used only in conjunction with
the member's own name.
Members may not utilize any form of the name of the Society
or the ASID appellation in conjunction with a firm name, even

where the member's name is encompassed in the name of the
firm.
A member may in no way imply, through advertising or other
means, that employees of his or her staff or firm are members
of ASID unless that is in fact the case, and then they may be
identified only by the appellations or designations consistent
with their status in ASID.
Inspiration
or designers
The ASID Board of Directors recently approved the use of a
new Professional Member mark. Use of the mark will help
you stand out in the marketplace by allowing consumers and
clients to quickly identify you as a highly qualified and experienced ASID Professional interior designer. (Note: Only
professional members of ASID are permitted to use the mark.)
Because membership applies to individuals and not their
businesses, use of the Professional Member mark is
restricted to those instances where the member’s name
and appellation are present—for example, on a business
card, stationery or Web site contact information.
Additional information is provided in the guidelines,
which you can download from www.asid.org with the
Professional Member mark.
