With the New Year comes many exciting events. We started it off with a Secrets and Sources
networking event. Judy May, Industry Partner ASID from Showhouse Marketing gave a
remarkable presentation on Marketing. We all learned that one of the most important factors
in business is to stay positive. If you have not attended a Secrets and Sources, you are missing
out on valuable information, so be sure to look for information on the upcoming dates and
topics. Many thanks to Marcello Luzi, ASID and Bridget McMullin, ASID for organizing these
entertaining and educational events.
Students look out! Boy do you have fun filled events planned. On January 25th there will be
a Student Gathering at the Marketplace. Mike O’Brien from WS Cumby and Son will be
presenting on Green Building. This is a presentation you can’t miss. Also, you do not want to
miss the green products displays. Practitioners are welcome to this event as well.
The Student Gathering is followed by another Student Designer Day, in which students
shadow practitioners for a day. This was such a hit with the students, we are hosting another.
Students and practitioners do not miss out on this extremely educational experience on
February 1, 2007!!! Contact Bonnie Brinser, Industry Partner ASID for Sherwin Williams with
questions for all student events.
Get your Mardi Gras masks ready because Mardi Gras Casino Night 07 is coming on Fat
Tuesday, February 20th. If you did not attend this event last year, now is your chance to see
first hand what all the hype is about. Bring your friends and family for a fabulous night out.
I am most excited to tell you that our National ASID President, Suzan Globus, ASID, is
coming to visit our chapter on March 27th. She will be our key speaker at the Members
Recognition and Town Hall Meeting discussing important Legislation topics.

I r e n e
A healthy and happy New Year to you all! As with most,
this year starts off at a hectic pace, with the continuation
of plans for Mardi Gras in February and preparation for
issuing a Membership Directory.
With only a few weeks
until February 20, “Fat Tuesday” it is really busy. We still
have room for sponsors, so if you know of anyone interested please direct them to the ASID office.
In addition, the office is usually the center for ongoing
activities such as the “Secrets and Sources” meetings,
planning for the student events and beginning arrangements for this year’s Annual Meeting. The STEP workshop
is also on the calendar for February.

for each event.
Elaine and I are working on a monthly calendar of
events to be sent during the first week of every month. It
will be sent as an email blast and should have all the
activities for that month posted. You will be able to print
it and place in a convenient place for reference.
Please visit the office when you are in the Marketplace
and we will be happy to make you a cup of coffee with our
new Keurig coffee maker. We have a great selection of
coffee as well as tea.
I am usually in the office on
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and look forward to
seeing all of you.

Secrets & Sources
By Marcello Luzi, ASID
new series of programs, geared towards helping
designers with their businesses, kicked off on
November 5 at Hollandia International in The
Marketplace Design Center. The series entitled “Secrets &
Sources” began with the first topic Fees . The program is
the brain child of President-elect Bridget McMullin, ASID
who wished to begin a networking group for the chapter
along with Marcello Luzi, ASID of Luzi Consulting, LLC.
The 35 designers who attended the first in a series of
programs participated in an open and frank discussion on
how designers are charging for their services. Current
threats were discussed and ways in which designers can
address them. The feedback from the first event was overwhelmingly positive and much valuable information was
gleaned by the designers in attendance.
A
Each program will have one topic of discussion, the
Secret and one theme for vendors the Source. Participants
are asked to bring a source to each meeting; the theme (i.e.
upholstery) will be announced ahead of time. Participants
will receive the Source list from the previous meeting. The
purpose is to share business advice or any topic which is of
interest to designers and sources that are valuable to
members practicing in the area. Secrets & Sources meetings are for members only.
Future programs will be Contracts on March 7 at Avalon
Carpet & Tile in Philadelphia; Profit on May 2 (location to
be determined.)
Thank you to our host David Ashe and Hollandia
International for their generous hospitality on November 5.

Town Hall Meeting
SID PA East held our first Town
Hall Meeting on November 8,
2006 at the Pro Source Showroom
in Langhorn PA. The meeting was well
attended and questions and concerns
regarding Interior Designer Legislation
were addressed.
A
The major concern among members
present revolved around the grandfathering clause and how will it work. We
want everyone to understand the
Interior Designer Legislation can only
benefit our profession. The grandfather ing clause is being designed to
include as many designers as possible
and once legislation is passed ASID PA
and the IDLCPA will work with designers
to get those who qualify grandfathered
in. If you are a designer who will be
applying for the grandfathering clause and have concerns,
you need to get involved! The only way you can make a
difference is by becoming active in the process of writing
the legislation.

Student Designer Day
tudent Designer Day was held on Wednesday, October
25, 2006. On this day, student designers were paired
with design practitioners and spent the day shadowing them. Students gained a wealth of information and
the hands on experience of working in a design firm.
S
The following is a report from two of the students:
On Wednesday October 25, 2006 I was able to participate in Take a Design Student to Work Day. The designer
that I went to work with was Jill Di Clementi, ASID. She is
one of my teachers at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. I
spent the day with her at BHH Tait Interiors LLC, in
Wilmington Delaware. The experience was great. I accompanied her to a job site to take site pictures, worked with
one of her co-workers ordering samples, sat in on a meeting
with some flooring representatives, and talked to some of
the architects that she works with. The experience was a
great way to see what it is like to work in an interior design
firm. Of course all firms work differently but it was still a
great opportunity to really be there and see what they do
everyday at work. I enjoyed going to work with one of my
teachers because I felt more comfortable around everyone.
Thank you Jill for taking the time to show me what your job
is like.
~ Tiffany Watson, Student Member ASID
Tiffany Watson, Student Member ASID from the Art Institute of
Philadelphia and Lucy Keller, Allied Member ASID from BHH Tait
Interiors LLC.
In participating with the ASID student-designer day, I
was very nervous and a little insecure, since I was spending
the entire day with a design professional that had been
successfully running her own business for a number of
years. Needless to say I was intimidated. All negative feelings were immediately put to rest upon our meeting. Diane
Bishop, Allied Member ASID was more than happy to pick
me up from the train station, making me feel right at home
from the start. The day with Diane and her wonderful staff
was spent visiting merchant showrooms, installing selected
merchandise on site, and space planning. Diane, Amy,
Jackie, and Lindsay, all made me feel welcome and like a
genuine part of their team. They asked me for feedback and
input whenever possible. Spending the day with them
allowed me an education that could never be attained in the
classroom. I am so very grateful to ASID & Diane Bishop
Interiors for allowing a design student the opportunity to
gain such incredible hands on exposure.

ASID PA EAST Holiday Event
By Candice Smith. Allied Member, ASID
his year’s holiday event was an evening to remember.
Hosted by The Viking Culinary Center in Bryn Mawr,
PA , the theme of the event was Easy Holiday
Entertaining. We had a great turn out for this event, with 80
reserved seats as well as people paying at the door. Guests
T
mingled while enjoying wine and chefs prepared appetizers.
We were also given the chance to shop in the Viking store
and receive 15% off for our holiday shopping.
The highlight of the evening was the cooking demonstrations. Guests gathered in the theater to watch a professional chef prepare two dishes. Everyone was able to
sample the dishes, as well as ask any questions about
preparation. The demonstrations proved to be a great
learning experience for everyone, and we took home some
great cooking tips.
We were also able to give away some wonderful door
prizes in a business card raffle. Among the items raffled off
were: cooking classes from Viking, a $75 Toppers Spa gift
card, a $50 and $100 restaurant gift card, an office chair
and a contemporary pendant light fixture, all of which were
donated.
Afterwards guests viewed a homemade truffle demonstration as they enjoyed coffee and dessert. It was great to

Daylight in the Office Space
Lutron Electronics, Co., Inc.
ight is a dynamic element
of the built environment. In
an office building, electricity is expensive and, of all
building systems, lighting is
typically the largest consumer of
electricity. Natural light is free,
but its availability fluctuates
every day in both time and quantity.
L
As more windows are added
into an office building project,
more natural light is invited into
the space. Incorporating natural
light into an office space creates
an opportunity to improve the
environmental performance of
the project, while promoting
individual
well-being
and
enabling capital building investments
to
provide
better
economic returns. In order to
realize these potential benefits,
the natural light must be effectively controlled.
A conference room utilizing "Daylighting"
Natural Light in an Office
Space and the Individual
The most basic goals in office space design are to create
a place where work can be accomplished and communication can occur. Today, light is instrumental in creating that
productive environment, because 90 percent of the communication in the workplace occurs visually. The same light
that is the medium for visual communication also impacts
the mood, health, and behavior of the employees it touches.
Recent studies imply that incorporating outdoor views into
the office will positively effect employee motivation, satisfaction, productivity, and comfort, which can manifest in
improved employee retention and workforce output.
Natural Light in an Office Space and
Building Performance (Financial Efficiency)
In the United States, the peak demand of electricity
occurs during standard business hours. The price of electricity used during peak demand times is higher than the
price of electricity used when the overall demand wanes.
Effectively using the daylight available dur ing those
business hours not only reduces the total electr icity
demanded by lighting and HVAC systems, but also reduces
peak demand.
Natural Light in an Office Space and Sustainable Design
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED™) rating system recognizes that incorporating
natural light and views into a building can promote occupant well-being, while reducing the amount of electricity
used by the lighting and HVAC systems. LEED is a rating
system sanctioned by the U.S. Green Building Council
(USGBC) that provides a national standard for what constitutes a “green” building. There are a total of 69 LEED
credits available between these six categories. Twenty-six
credits are required to attain the most basic level of LEED
certification. Lutron Electronics offers different lighting
control and automated shading systems that can earn LEED
credits when used separately or in conjunction with one
another. Incorporating natural and electr ic lighting
control, such as Lutron’s into a project can contribute
toward earning up to 22 LEED credits.

The Art of Daylighting
The Fabric Matters
Daylighting is a method of controlling and managing both
the natural and electric light needed in an office building.
It is defined as the proper utilization of daylight to reduce
energy consumption in the interior of buildings, while
reducing sun glare and protecting the visual aesthetics of
the space. Daylighting employs a regulated balance of electric and natural light in conjunction with the other building
systems, finishes, fabrics, and furnishings that combine to
make up the building’s interior. To maximize the benefits of
daylighting, daylight should be controlled.
Solar shading is an effective way to reduce glare,
preserve outdoor views, provide privacy, protect interior
furnishings from UV damage, and minimize solar heat gain.
Regardless of whether or not a solar shade is controlled
manually or electronically, specifying the right shade fabric
is critical to managing the daylight in a space successfully.
The openness factor of the fabric, the color of the fabric,
and the composition of the fabric each shapes how the
shade will interact with and manage the sun’s light and heat
energy, also known as solar radiation.
A variety of window and shading system technologies
have been developed to control daylight, including, but not
limited to, horizontal louvers, vertical blinds, draperies,
and roller shades. These control devices range in price,
flexibility, and ability to effectively manage light, minimize
glare, preserve outdoor views, allow for privacy, reduce UV
radiation, combat solar heat gains, and enhance “curb
appeal” and property value by offering the opportunity for
a more consistent facade appearance. Lutron’s Sivoia QED™
(Quiet Electronic Drive) automated shading system guarantees that each shade is always positioned appropriately for
maximum effectiveness and offers the opportunity for
consistent curb appeal by programming shades to uniform,
pre-determined heights throughout the building.
Designing controlled daylight in a space creates opportunities for healthier, more productive, more satisfied
employees, as well as enhanced building performance
potential. The benefits of controlled daylight are substantial, but so are the long-term implications. Natural light is a
tremendous source of light and heat. Harness and manage it
effectively.
Editor’s Note:
Lutron Electronics Co., Inc., (www.lutron.com) headquartered in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, is the world's leading
designer and manufacturer of lighting controls, lighting
control systems, and shading solutions for residential and
commercial applications.

ASID Legislation Symposium
n October Bridget McMullin, ASID and I traveled to
Minneapolis, Minnesota for the ASID Legislation
Symposium. The Pennsylvania contingency was strong
represented by Carl Ballinger IIDA, Mary Ann Mozelewski
ASID (ASID PA West), Kathryn Jolley, ASID (ASID PA West),
and Noelle Weaver IIDA.
I
Our grassroots effort will get the attention of the legislators. We need to get Interior Designers out and meeting
with their state representatives explaining how Interior
Designers impact everyday life and we need to get the
support from organizations that interact with the interior
design profession. Understanding and approaching our
opposition in an educated and prepared manner will help us
overcome the hurdles that are sure to be put in our path.
People and money move legislation. We NEED volunteers
and we NEED members to donate to the Interior Design PAC
Fund on a regular basis. To get involved in ASID’s grassroots effort or to find out who your state representatives
are, contact Christina Thomas, ASID at [email protected]
or 610.960.3438.
Legislative Update
By Christina Thomas, ASID
(Left to right) Noelle Weaver, IIDA; Kathryn Jolley, ASID; Mary Ann
Mozelewski, ASID; Carl Ballinger, ASID; Christina Thomas, ASID
and Bridget McMullin, ASID attend the Legislative Symposium.
The experience was eye opening. We participated in
lectures and seminars designed to educate us on what we
are going to face with the introduction of Pennsylvania’s
Interior Designers Bill in 2007. Some of the Lectures we
attended included; What Your Lobbyist Doesn’t Tell You
presented by Paul Bauer, Negotiation Without Giving In
presented by Carolyn Berndt and Suzan Globus, FASID,
You Can’t Go It Alone presented by Barbara Martini, ASID,
IDEC and Linda Newton, FASID and Know Your Opposition
presented by Phyllis Moore, FASID. The information
presented by these speakers was helpful and enlightening.
The seminars were designed to group us with other state
representatives who were in the same point in the process
as our state and gave us an opportunity to discuss their
experiences as well as the strategies they have used to help
them move their Legislation forward. The most enlightening fact came from a woman in Florida who said that their
fight was long and hard, and it wasn’t until they realized
that getting the legislators to listen was the toughest part.
They were finally able to get the ear of the then Governor by
getting his wife’s Interior Designer to explain the impact
Interior Designers have on the health, safety and welfare of
the public. The Governor’s wife in turn talked to her
husband about it until he couldn’t stand to hear about the
interior designer’s bill anymore and at that moment is when
the push for legislation started to move forward. Florida is
currently one of a few states with a Practice Act.

he New Year brings exciting times for the Interior
Design profession with the anticipation of the Interior
Designers Bill being introduced shortly. Members of
the Interior Design Legislation Coalition of Pennsylvania
(IDLCPA) are currently working with our Lobbyist on
revising the draft of the Bill to be introduced in the 2007
Legislative session. For more information explaining the
content of the Practice Act and how the grandfathering
clause will effect you, visit www.idlcpa.org.
T
ASID and IDLCPA are always looking for advocates of ID
legislation to get involved with grassroots effots. We need
ASID members to meet with their legislators and talk about
the introduction of Bill and the need for Interior Design
legislation in the state of Pennsylvania. To find out who
your local legislator is, log onto www.legis.state.pa.us. Mary
Ann Mozelewski, ASID at [email protected] or Carl
Ballinger ASID at [email protected] can schedule an
appointment with your legislator as well as schedule a
volunteer for IDLCPA to attend the meeting with you.
Financial support of the IDLCPA is crucial for the success
of our endeavor. Getting legislation passed cost approximately $25-30,000 per year. You can contribute by making
a personal check to the Interior Designers PAC and mail it
to the IDLCPA at P.O. Box 44144 Pittsburgh, PA 15205. We
also hope you will attend our Mardi Gra celebration this
year on February 20, 2007. Proceeds will support the
IDLCPA and our push for Interior Designer Legislation.

Please contact Christina Thomas at [email protected] to
get involved.
