Hallo Laserdisc- und DVD-Fans,
liebe Filmfreunde!
“Wie konnte denn das passieren?”
werden Sie sich vermutlich fragen.
“Wieso hat mich niemand vorgewarnt oder mir rechtzeitig Bescheid
gesagt?” wird dann so mancher
fragend in die Runde blicken. Aber
man kann es drehen und wenden
wie man möchte: Weihnachten ist
tatsächlich nur noch vier Wochen
entfernt! Und die Erfahrung zeigt:
Wer jetzt noch nicht alle Geschenke
eingekauft hat, der wird ganz bestimmt in Stress kommen. Falls
DVDs und Blu-rays zu den Gaben
gehören, die Sie sich selbst gerne
schenken möchten oder über die
sich jemand anderer riesig freuen
würde, dann stehen wir Ihnen natürlich mit Rat und Tat zur Seite.
Und wir werden wie jedes Jahr extrem bemüht sein, Ihre Weihnachtspäckchen noch rechtzeitig vor Heiligabend zukommen zu lassen. Hexen können allerdings nicht einmal
wir, auch wenn’s ab und zu danach
aussieht. Will heissen: wer sein
Last Minute Geschenk bei uns erst
am 23. Dezember bestellt, der
wird’s ganz sicher nicht mehr
rechtzeitig unter den Christbaum
legen können. Und sagen Sie nicht,
wir hätten Sie nicht gewarnt...
Was viele gehofft haben, hat sich
als Luftblase herausgestellt:

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
wird erst im Februar 2010 in
Deutschland auf DVD und Blu-ray
erscheinen. Wer es also nicht noch
zwei Monate abwarten kann, einen
der kuriosesten Actionfilme der
letzten Jahre im eigenen Heimkino
zu genießen, dem sei der Griff zur
amerikanischen Variante empfohlen. Denn dort dürfen sich Brad
Pitt und seine Mannschaft bereits
im Dezember auf DVD und Blu-ray
austoben. Und das sogar ganz
pünktlich zum Weihnachtsfest.
Wie jedes Jahr so werden auch wir

die Weihnachtszeit wieder nutzen,
uns eine Pause zu gönnen. Vom 23.
Dezember 2009 bis einschließlich
10. Januar 2010 bleiben unser Büro
und der Verkauf geschlossen. Geschlossen hat in dieser Ausgabe des
Newsletters übrigens unsere Kolumnistin Anna. Die vielen vorweihnachtlichen Termine, die einer Studentin im nasskalten Zürich abver-
langt werden, ließen ihr dieses Mal
leider keine Zeit für cineastische
Erleuchtungen. Aber keine Sorge:
Sie lesen momentan ja noch nicht
die letzte Newsletter-Ausgabe in
diesem Jahr. Wie steht oft am Ende
einiger Filme so schön geschrieben:
“To be continued!”.

Lustige Zombies und eisige Berge
Mit einem Double Feature begrüsste mich die neue Pressewoche...
ZOMBIELAND (1:2.35, DD 5.1)

Die ganze Welt wurde durch eine
Seuche in Zombieterritorium verwandelt. Columbus, ein junger Typ,
hält sich für den einzigen Überlebenden. Seine Überlebensstrategie
sind die Regeln, die er für sich
selbst aufgestellt hat. Eines Tages
macht er sich auf den Weg in seine
Heimat. Unterweg trifft er auf den
durchgeknallten Tallahassee, der
gerne Zombies killt und ganz scharf
auf Twinkies ist. Gemeinsam treten
sie eine lange Reise an... Ruben
Fleischer hat ein ganz nettes
Zombie Road-Movie geschaffen,
das ganz auf das Zielpublikum zugeschnitten ist: Zombie-Fans. Hier
darf gesplattert und gleichzeitig gelacht werden. Doch leider verliert
die Idee während des Films deutlich
an Fahrt und der Film plätschert so
vor sich hin. Was den Fun-Faktor
angeht, so gibt es Filme, die das
einfach besser können. Nichtsdestotrotz hat der Film einen cineastischen Höhepunkt: die Begegnung mit dem echten Bill Murray,
der sich aus Sicherheitsgründen als
Zombie tarnt. Und eines sei schon
verraten: laut Drehbuch ist dies
sein letzter Film...

In gewaltigen Bildern erzählt Joseph Vilsmaier die wahre Geschichte der Besteigung des Nanga
Parbat in Pakistan durch die
Messner-Brüder. Die teilweise im
65mm-Format aufgenommenen
Landschaftspanoramen sind derart
spektakulär, dass man kleinere dramaturgische Schwächen dafür gerne in Kauf nimmt. So wirkt beispielsweise der Vortrag von Reinhold Messner (gespielt von Florian
Stetter) über die dramatische Besteigung, bei der sein jüngerer Bruder den Tod fand, etwas gekünstelt.
Die Besteigung selbst wirkt dagegen sehr authentisch und extrem
spannend.

Das Plastikzeitalter
Dokumentarfilme können sehr ernüchternd sein...

Haben Sie Angst vor Plastik? Spätestens nach Werner Bootes Film
werden Sie es haben. Der smarte
Österreicher führt seinen Zuschauern vor Augen, dass das Leben im
Plastikzeitalter alles andere als gut
ist. In bester Michael Moore Manier reist er um die ganze Welt, um
herauszufinden, ob Plastik gesundheitsschädlich ist oder nicht. Da
gehört ein kleiner Plastikhersteller
in China genauso dazu wie die
Müllsammler auf einer Mülldeponie
in Kalkutta. Die Gespräche mit
Wissenschaftlern vieler Universitäten bringen das düstere Geheimnis
schließlich ans Licht: Plastik ist ex-
trem gefährlich. Die Industrie weiß
das schon lange, sagt es aber nicht.
Denn schließlich geht es hier um
satte Profite. Eine EU-Kommissarin benennt das Problem: die Lobby
der großen Chemiekonzerne ist zu
groß, um dagegen anzukommen.
Bootes interessant gestalteter Film
erinnert sehr an die Projekte eines
Michael Moore, wobei das im
durchaus positiven Sinn gemeint ist.
Ein Dokumentarfilm, der fesselt
und gleichzeitig beängstigend ist.
Sehenswert.

Kurdenschicksal und
Schriftstellerzänke
Der erste Film heute hat mir ausgesprochen gut gefallen, so dass der
zweite dagegen keine Chance mehr
hatte. Fast keine zumindest.

Der 17jährige Kurde Balil hat es
von seiner Heimat Irak bis nach
Calais geschafft. Jetzt muss er nur
noch irgendwie nach England kommen, um seine Freundin Mina in
London in die Arme nehmen zu
können. Der gefährliche Transport
über Schlepperbanden misslingt und
Balil sitzt fest. Die einzige Möglichkeit erscheint ihm über den Ärmelkanal zu schwimmen. In Calais
trifft er auf den Schwimmlehrer
Simon kennen, der ihm Schwimmunterricht gibt.... Der bewegende
Film schildert sehr authentisch das
Schicksal vieler Flüchtlinge, die in
Frankreich stranden und unbedingt
ins gelobte Land England gelangen
wollen. In den Hauptrollen perfekt
besetzt lässt er den Zuschauer teil-

haben an der dramatischen Geschichte des Balil. Für Simon ist
der Umgang mit Balil riskant, denn
in Frankreich steht die Hilfe für
Illegale unter Strafe. Doch für den
in Scheidung lebenden Schwimmlehrer ist Balil eine Stütze, die ihn
am Leben hält. Ein spannendes und
gleichzeitig sehr gefühlvolles Stück
Kino, das außerdem hervorragend
photographiert ist.
EIN RUSSISCHER SOMMER

Darsteller: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy
Ein junger Mann, der überzeugter
Tolstoijaner ist, wird der neue Privatsekretär des alten Leo Tolstoi.
Der hat sich ganz seiner Sache des
gewaltlosen Widerstandes, des Verzichts auf Privateigentum und der
Enthaltsamkeit verschrieben, ohne
diese Regeln jedoch selbst so genau
zu befolgen. Während dieser Zeit
kommt es zwischen Tolstoi und seiner Frau zu Auseinandersetzungen
das Werk und damit das Erbe Tolstois betreffend... Wer schön photographierte Historienfilme mag,
der wird an diesem RUSSISCHEN
SOMMER seinen Gefallen finden.
Ein aufgezeichnetes Darstellerensemble läuft hier zur Höchstform
auf. Mir persönlich hat diese wahre
Geschichte jedoch nicht so sehr gefallen wie die fiktiven Sittengemälde aus der Merchant-Ivory-Schmiede. Den deutschen Verleihtitel finde
ich etwas irreführend, spielt der
Film doch zu großen Teilen im
Herbst.

Ihrer Gutgläubigkeit und der Raffgier eines jungen Bankers hat es
die Rentnerin Lena zu verdanken,
dass sie ihr kleines Häuschen an
die Bank verliert und in ein Seniorenheim umsiedeln muss. Dort wirft
der umtriebige Johann ein Auge auf
sie und will ihr helfen, ihr Häuschen wieder zurückzugewinnen...
Leander Haußmanns Remake des
deutschen Klassikers “Lina
Braake” nimmt leider viel zu spät
so richtig Fahrt auf. Zu diesem
Zeitpunkt hat er vermutlich das Publikum schon verloren. Das ist eigentlich sehr schade, hat er doch
ein richtiges Antiquariat an bekannten Schauspielern zu bieten, angefangen bei Walter Giller bis Ralf
Wolter. Die geben ihr Bestes und
überzeugen in den altersgerechten
Rollen. Ein Film, den man nicht unbedingt gesehen haben muss.

Wenn der Buck auf Reisen
geht...
Schon Mittwoch und erst jetzt die
erste Pressevorführung. Das wird
eine kurze Woche filmtechnisch
gesprochen!
SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT (1:2.35, DD 5.1)

Darsteller: David Kross, Apinya
Sakuljaroensuk, Anatole Taubman
Verlagspraktikant Benjamin lernt
während seines Urlaubs in Kambodscha eine junge Prostituierte kennen und verliebt such in sie. Wieder
zurück in Deutschland schickt er
ihr ständig Geld, damit sie nicht
mehr anschaffen muss. Doch dann
offenbart sie ihm per Telefon, dass
sie HIV positiv ist. Ein Schock für
Benjamin... Vielleicht liegt es einfach daran, dass das Sujet des nach
einer wahren Begebenheit entstandenen Films einfach nicht Detlev
Bucks Sache ist. Der mit viel Aufwand an Originalschauplätzen gedrehte Film wirkt nicht nur einmal
fast wie verloren, wenn er sich auf
kleine Nebenhandlungen einlässt
und diese nicht konsequent zu Ende
führt. Der anfängliche AIDSSchock geht zwar an die Nieren,
relativiert sich aber ganz schnell
wieder. Und Benjamins selbstlose
Liebe zur jungen Prostituierten, der
er gute Medikamente beschafft,
wirkt nicht wirklich romantisch.
Das Konzept des Films geht nicht
richtig auf und wird die Mehrzahl
der Zuschauer mehr langweilen als
begeistern.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Ein junges Paar will mittels Videoaufnahmen einen Poltergeist dingfest machen, der in ihrem kleinen
Häuschen sein Unwesen treibt...
Wie schon in Filmen wie REC oder
GLOVERFIELD bekommen die
Zuschauer auch hier “nur” ein
Videoband zu sehen. Einmal mehr
also Reality-Horror. Doch der hat

durchaus Potenzial. Und das ohne
bahnbrechende Spezialeffekte. Leider schöpft der Film dennoch seine
ungeahnten Möglichkeiten voll aus,
sondern unterbricht seinen Spannungsbogen immer wieder. Das
geht anfangs noch in Ordnung,
doch zum Ende hin ärgert das dann
doch ein wenig. Auch die Kameraführung der Protagonisten ist an
der ein oder anderen Stelle weniger
“Reality” denn “Hollywood”. Besonders störend aber entpuppt sich
die Dummheit des Hauptdarstellers.
Hier hat das Drehbuch zugunsten
erzwungener Dramaturgie komplett
versagt. Dennoch sehenswertes
Grusel-Kino. Leider wurden vom
deutschen Filmverleih keine Pressevorführungen angeboten, so dass
ich mir den Film unter realen Kinobedingungen ansehen musste – mit
extrem nervendem Publikum!

Der Pirat und die Flamingos
Gerade wenn man denkt, dass es
nicht mehr schlimmer kommen
kann, schaut Störtebeker um die
Ecke...

Im Jahre 1400 treiben Piratenkapitän Klaus Störtebeker und seine Mannen ihr blutiges Unwesen in
Nord- und Ostsee und macht den
hanseatischen Kaufleuten das Leben schwer. Nachdem er bei einer
Seeschlacht schwer verletzt wird,
erfällt er in eine Depression. Sein
bester Freund Gödeke Michels
springt für ihn ein und alsbald hat
das Piratenschiff zwei Kapitäne...
Ein Tiefpunkt deutschen Filmschaf-

fens! Weder Regisseur noch Drehbuchautor machen ihren Standpunkt
klar: handelt es sich hierbei nun um
eine Komödie, ein Drama, einen
Abenteuerfilm oder gar um eine
Liebesgeschichte? Der mit Hardrockmusik unterlegte Film bedient
sich zeitgenössischer Fäkalsprache
und passt damit absolut nicht ins
14. Jahrhundert! Und damit es auch
Schauwerte gibt, wurde das Machwerk mit ein paar Sexszenen angereichert, über die man nur den Kopf
schütteln kann. Mein Tipp: wer es
sich leisten kann, der bleibe diesem
Film fern.

In schönen, ruhigen Bildern wird
der Lebenszyklus der Flamingos
beobachtet, die sich Jahr für Jahr in
einem Salzsee in Afrika zu Tausenden ein Stelldichein geben, um sich
zu paaren. Faszinierend und einschläfernd zugleich.

Die junge Chinesin Mei vegetiert in
ihrem kleinen Dorf vor sich hin. Sie
hat das monotone Leben dort satt
und lässt keine Möglichkeit aus, in
die Stadt zu kommen. Als sie eines
Tages von einem befreundeten
LKW-Fahrer vergewaltigt wird,
beschließt sie fortzugehen. Ihr Ziel:
England... Ein in der Hauptrolle
hervorragend gespieltes Drama, in
dem es laut Presseheft um
“Identifikationssuche im Zeitalter
der Globalisierung und dem Drang
junger Chinesen, aus der Enge ihres
riesigen Landes in eine unbegrenzte
Welt auszubrechen” geht. Das
Ganze war mir persönlich aber
doch zu sehr Arthouse...

Helene lebt mit Mann und Tochter
auf Korsika. Mit ihrer Arbeit als
Zimmermädchen in einem Hotel
und als Putzfrau eines reichen Doktors kann sie die Familie gerade so
über Wasser halten, ihr Mann ist
von Arbeitslosigkeit bedroht. Da
entdeckt sie plötzlich das Schachspiel für sich. In ihrem Arbeitgeber,
dem reichen Doktor, findet sie einen Lehrmeister... Noch ein Film,
in dem es um das Ausbrechen aus
der monotonen Lebenssituation
geht. Sandrine Bonnaire brilliert als
Helene, der es gelingt, durch ihre
Leidenschaft ihrem Leben eine
neue Perspektive zu geben. Ebenfalls überzeugend: Kevin Kline als
Helenes Lehrmeister, im Original
mit perfektem Französisch. Ein
schöner und ruhiger Film, der darüber hinaus auch noch exzellent
photographiert ist.
