OF KOLKATA
Dear sisters and brothers,
Last Sunday, Mother Teresa was canonized a saint in a beautiful celebration in Rome.
Called to serve and see Jesus in the poorest of the poor, she touched and inspired
millions. Even during her lifetime, we clearly knew we were living with a saint. She
was a humble woman though who never would have considered this title. People often
think of saints as men and women so holy they do not sin or if they do, their offenses
must be infinitesimally small. She disagreed with this interpretation and explained that
a saint was not someone who was perfect but one who after falling rises immediately,
turning back to the mercy of Jesus. Saints have a burning desire to follow the words of
Jesus who said Blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God.
Much has been written of her “dark night of the soul,” a spiritual desolation that many
of the Church’s mystics throughout history also experienced. This period of spiritual
purification can be very intense and uniquely for her lasted much of her adult life.
What marks this time as distinct is a continuing longing for God and an urge to love in
spite of it. On this point Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk the Canadian priest who advocated her
cause for canonization says, "You can be joyful even if you're suffering because you
are accepting, and you are working and acting with love that gives meaning to the
suffering."
The life and example of Mother Teresa gives us so much to reflect upon. I encourage
you to consider reading her book A Simple Path or to see the documentary Mother
Teresa, by Ann & Jeannette Petrie which was filmed on the run for a period of 5 years
in 10 countries on 4 continents. St. Teresa of Kolkata (Calcutta), pray for us!

Your Support To Serve 3,100
Parishioners In Togo
FATHER’S MISSION
I’m Assistant Pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Gbatope. It is 25 miles northeast of Lome. Besides my main parish, serving 1,200 people, I also serve 1,900 more via motor scooter in nine “staonal parishes” (quasi
parishes).
These include Davedi (300 people); Yobome (50); Yobo-Sedzro (150); Fongbe (50); Ga (150); Adangbe
(500); Adidokpo (50); Have (400); and Kôdzo (250). These parishes are as far as 13 miles apart, but the
people are grateful. I bring the Sacraments of the Church, along with spiritual counsel and support for families. The people are largely farmers; most are poor and humble. These large families have big hearts. They
support each other in community. Some don’t have access to clean water or three meals a day. But they’re
happy. The drinking water of our rectory is fetched from a village 22 miles away, stored, and then filtered for
use. Here, the needs of people are great day-to-day, but their greatest need is their spiritual well-being. Their
Faith helps them understand what’s important. Their Faith pulls them through any difficulty.
A FEW OF THE PARISH NEEDS
Our parish brings in $260 a month from dona-ons, but we need about $564 to sustain us. As a needy
parish, the Archdiocese provides us just $56.75 per month in addion to the $260, leaving us short each year
by $2,967—just for ongoing acvies. Here is a list of our needs:
▪ Parish and “Sta-onal Parish” needs, general opera-ng support: $600 month/$7,200 per year (Parish:
$2,967; Staonal Parishes: $4,233)
▪ Evangeliza-on Materials, Catechisms, Bibles, etc.: $4,500
▪ St. Joseph’s Food Pantry (planned, will connect with the Retreat Center) & Freshwater Well: $600 month/
$7,200 per year (for rice, storable food); $7,000 for a freshwater well
▪ 10-year-old Jeep: $6,000-$8,000 vehicle to replace 18-year-old, 125cc motor scooter used to visit parishes;
it will be easier to get through the monsoon floods
Fr. Vincent will preach at all of the Masses on the weekend of October 1-2, 2016, reques ng assistance
from St. Lawrence parishioners in this annual diocesan appeal.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
FUNDRAISING PROJECT FOR ST. PIUS X SEMINARY IN LOME, TOGO, WEST AFRICA
WHO IS FR. VINCENT ALEX YAO VODJOGBE
Fr. Vincent Vodjogbe is a Diocesan Roman Catholic priest serving in Lome, Togo, West Africa. He was
educated at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., thanks to a connection to the Rev. William Ryan, a
Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. serving as a missionary in the Archdiocese of
Lome, Togo, Africa.
Ordained to the priesthood in December 2013, Fr. Vodjogbe is currently an Assistant Pastor at Saint Joseph Parish in Gbatope, a town 25 miles northeast of Lome. Besides his main parish, serving 1,200 people, he
also serves 1,900 other people in nine “stational parishes” (quasi parishes). These are in Davedi (300 people);
Yobome (50); Yobo-Sedzro (150); Fongbe (50); Gati (150); Adangbe (500); Adidokpo (50); Have (400); and Kôdzo
(250). These locations are as far as 13 miles apart, but the people are grateful. He brings the Sacraments of the
Church to them, along with spiritual counsel and support for their families.
The people Fr. Vodjogbe serves are largely farmers. Most are poor and humble. Very few are involved in
any trading activity. Those people have large families and big hearts; they support each other in community.
Some don’t have access to clean water or three meals a day. But they’re happy. The drinking water of Saint Joseph’s rectory, for instance, is fetched from a village 22 miles away, stored, and then filtered for use. There, the
needs of the people are great day-to-day, but their greatest need is their spiritual well-being. Their Faith helps
them understand what’s truly important. Their Faith pulls them through any difficulty.
WHAT HAS FR. VINCENT VODJOGBE ACHIEVED SO FAR? Last year, Epiphany Church in the Archdiocese
of Washington, DC generously donated a set of the Stations of the Cross to Saint Joseph Parish in Gbatope, Togo.
Donations from the James Francis Xavier Payne Togo Benefactors, and others, in Florida and Maryland, allowed
Fr. Vodjogbe to install the Stations of the Cross on the site of the parish Marian Sanctuary. The Stations were solemnly dedicated this year on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The grotto was dedicated
on the same occasion last year. Various construction works are still underway for the full realization of the Marian Sanctuary. It’s a day-to-day endeavor.
Earlier this year, generous donations from friends in Maryland allowed Fr. Vodjogbe to retire the parish’s
18-year-old, 125cc motor scooter. The scooter, the only priestly transport to 9 stational parishes, was replaced
with a 13-year-old Toyota Rav4, in excellent condition. Traversing roads during monsoons will be safer & easier
now.
WHY IS FR. VINCENT VODJOGBE COMING HERE?
Fr. Vincent is coming to our parish with a tentative plan to rescue the St. Pius X Seminary in the Archdiocese of Lome, Togo (West Africa) which is in dire financial straits, forcing it to close early each year. Almost each
year, the seminary falls short of funds $42,847, meaning it has to shut down as early as May instead of the official June or mid-July end of the academic year, because there is no money to cover costs. The hope and expectations of Father and his archdiocese is to put the seminary on the path to financial stability.
The rescue plan calls for warehouses to be built at a cost of $135,196 to rent and/or to be used by the
seminary. These warehouses would be used for trading activities or other purposes. In fact, the portion of the
seminary land earmarked for the warehouses is not far from a market area. Merchants are in need of places to
store their goods or to use for their trading activities. Based on current rental rates in the market, a building can
be charged for $510/month over 12 months for rent. Thus with 15 warehouses of 345 square feet each, the generating estimation could be of $91,800 a year, more than the shortfall. The building costs would need to be covered. Fr. Vincent and the Archdiocese of Lome are counting on us to rescue the St. Pius Seminary in order to ensure a suitable formation for future priests.

Santa Teresa de Calcuta
•
Canonización,
4 de Septiembre 2016
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
