A FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL COVER FROM THE THIRD “MARTINSYDE” ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC. ONLY 25 COVERS WERE ADDED TO THE MAIL FOR THE JULY 17 FLIGHT, WHICH CRASHED ON TAKE-OFF. .......................................................................... The “Martinsyde” was rebuilt after the May 1919 crash. Major Raynham and his new navigator, Lieut. Biddlescombe, made another attempt on July 17, but the plane crashed during take-off. The mail bag, which contained 25 additional letters franked with the $1.00 AlcockBrown stamp, was taken to England by Major Raynham but forgotten until the following January, which explains the Jan. 7 backstamp applied by the London post office. .................... A fishing vessel rescued them after a thirteen-day trek across the icecap.
