We’ve got you covered
Bioracer is a Belgian sports clothing company
established in 1986,
which burns with passion for cycling, triathlon and
its enthusiasts. 468 medals have already been won
at the Olympics, World Championships and
National Championships, by athletes wearing our
sportswear: men, women and youth in all
disciplines from various countries and cultures.
T
riathlon is one of the most demanding
sports. But just like any other sport, training
is the determining factor. The harder, longer
and more efficient you train, the more you get out of
your body, the more you improve your split times,
the better you become.

REPORTAGE
Only hours later, in the heart of Frankfurt,
that same man—Jan Frodeno of Germany—
would accept their congratulations. With
a record-setting bike split of 4:08:44, the
man known in the sport as a «swim-runner»
silenced everyone tempted to joke about the
bike clumsiness in 2014 that might have cost
him the win. Leaving the memory of a ripped
wetsuit and multiple flats far behind him,
Frodeno lead the race from start to finish and
set a new course record of 7:49:48.
European Champion

After exiting the water over 4
minutes behind Frodeno, this year
it was Kienle’s turn to battle bad
luck. After having to re-adjust his
goggles on the swim, the defending
champion also lost one of his bike
bottles around the 18 kilometer
mark on the bike. The 112-mile bike
was all the Frodeno show; he just
kept extending his gap, ultimately
pulling into T2 6 minutes ahead of
Kienle. Behind the two Germans,
Van Lierde, Tyler Butterfield (BER),
and Boecherer shuffled positions
behind him.
The Bermudian Tyler Butterfield has a nice popularity rating
Frodeno set out on the run looking steady and
strong as temperatures soared to 38 degrees C (100
degrees F). Eventually however, the 2008 Olympic
champion’s blazing fast bike ride (4 minutes faster
than Kienle’s last year at 4:08:43), started to wear
on him during the last few kilometers of the run
as he chose to walk through aid stations and run
on a softer surface next to the sidewalk. Behind

him, all over 6 minutes back, Kienle, Boecherer,
Butterfield, and Van Lierde would shuffle places.
It was the relative IRONMAN rookie who would
get to absorb the full energy of the unique
300-meter long finish line chute and bask in the
glory of his first IRONMAN win. Kienle finished
second in 8:01:39, with Böcherer third in 8:03:49.

«People tell you to enjoy it, but it’s just

what makes the legacy of IRONMAN. It

Past champion Caroline Steffen (CHE) led the women
from the gun onto the two-lap swim in Lake Langener

2014 IRONMAN World Championship runner-up
Daniela Ryf (CHE), and Julia Gajer (GER) trailed her
by mere seconds, and the four race favorite all exited
the water more or less together. A chase pack exited the
water over 2 minutes behind the leaders.

Caroline Steffen is first out of the
swim leg
By the 45 kilometer mark near
the town of Karben, Ryf had
overtaken the race and never
looked back. Steffen made
a series of solid pushes to
threaten, but was never able to
make a permanent mark. Gajer
rode steady, but Ryf was just
too strong, entering T2 with a
7-minute lead. Steffen headed
out on the run 10 minutes back,
with Vesterby falling entering 14
minutes back.

CHANE, Sébastien HARTMANN and Bertrand

of the bad days.
As regards the women, Camille DONAT built a
comfortable gap before beginning the bike with
more than two minutes lead on her followers
such as KONSCHAK and LESTER and even 4
minutes on COLLONGE.
The course that offers the 5150 Marseille is
wonderful, above all when the wind is blowing
hard and at this game, Jeanne COLLONGE hit
again the spirits by catching the athletes one
by one and finishing the bike first with Camille
DONAT. Concerning the men, HORSEAU, from
Montpellier Triathlon rode hard, very hard, and
finished the bike second behind Karl SHAW.
Nice surprise also from Maxime CHANÉ who
began his 10K just in front of Bertrand BILLARD,
DEGHAM and FERNANDEZ to finish 7th,
supported by his coach Yves CORDIER.
In the end, Karl SHAW and Jeanne COLLONGE
are the winners of this 5150 Marseille 2015.

REPORT
made its festival … of triathlon
Again this year, the Tour de France honored the 21 curves of Alpe d’Huez with a last battle for Froome before competing for the title
the next day on the famous Champs-Elysées.
A few days only after this always exciting passage of the Tour, the resort welcomed another huge sports event : 4000 triathletes
of each category and age group came to participate in the 10th edition of the triathlon of Alpe d’Huez : Duathlon, LD triathlon, SD
or kids edition... A big thrill for everybody participating and of course, a great feeling to face a myth : the climb up to the resort !

The Spanish triathletes Diego Paredes and Alejandro Santamaría had an amazing fight in order to get the first position at the International Vitoria-Gasteiz Triathlon 2015. Paredes, stronger
than Santamaría in the running race, finally got the victory in the Full category. Finally, the Spanish Xabier Amparan completed the podium taking the third position. In the female category, the
Canadian Brooke Brown was the best out of the contestants, who made a great race. After her, the German triathlete Kathrin Walter and the Spanish Ruth Brito, who lives in Vitoria, arrived.

uccess on the participation,

ninth edition of the International
Vitoria-Gasteiz Triathlon, celebrated
today, the Full distance (3,8-180-42)
and the Half distance were disputed.
The winner of the Full category was
Diego Paredes (8:33:00) who made an
spectacular entrance at the finish line,
beside a great audience, making the
athlete feel emotional. His first words
thanked the spectators of Vitoria “it’s
incredible to win in Vitoria, mostly because
of its audience, but also because of the level
that the race is achieveing, year by year”.
Alejandro Santamaría, second arriving
to the finish line, could not contain
his emotion back and taking the
microphone, spoke to the audience at
Plaza de España: “ I have been suffering
since the second kilometer of the running
course, but I could not abandon, I have
been the main image of the race, I was on
the official poster, I was on the walls, on the

Vincent Luis smashes
Hamburg for first WTS title
No stranger to the podium, but a stranger to the top, France’s Vincent Luis produced a remarkable run at World Triathlon Hamburg
to claim his first ever World Triathlon Series title over four-time World Champion Javier Gomez Noya (ESP). Engaged in a tight
battle with Gomez the entire race, Luis launched past the No.1 world ranked Spaniard in the last 300 metres, becoming the first
French athlete to ever win a WTS title.

Gomez scored silver medal after falling just short of Luis on the blue carpet. But the podium placement
was enough to keep his overall No. 1 ranking intact.
“It was my first victory in the WTS and the first for the French team.
It ’s really good for me , but really it is good for the French ,” Luis said
of his win . “I was really confident. I tried to attack him (Gomez), but
then he attacked me . I had to wait until the sprint to set a fast tempo
to make sure he wouldn’t attack me before the finish .”
Known as one of the most popular races on the
WTS calendar, crowds tallying into the thousands
gathered to watch the men take off in Germany.
Entering the warm no-wetsuit required waters,
Richard Varga (SVK) and Anthony Pujades
(FRA) set the pace on the one-lap swim at a rate
fast enough to conjure up a small lead onto the
bike. Together with 9 more men, which included
Gomez, Luis, Aaron Royle (AUS), Dorian Coninx

Although the chase contained several strong

chase and stay united through the entire bike leg.
Then out of T2, Gomez and Luis blew to the front
of the pack and immediately dropped their group
that included Nieschlag, Zaferes and Schoeman.
From there, the race became a sprint between
the Spaniard and Frenchman.
Gomez took the front spot for the first lap, but it
“It was a pretty good race , the first

we were able to keep away from

I wasn’t feeling great and I knew
Vincent was really fast in the last
200 metres, I tried to go before at

Coming out of the bike, Mola was down by over
30 seconds and looked to be out of podium
contention. But the Spaniard showcased the
most impressive run in WTS history and was
able to blow by the likes of more than a dozen
men. His split of 13:55 goes down in history
as the fastest 5km run ever recorded in WTS
history.
Mola said, “I had to believe that I could

position at the beginning of the run ,
but you have to believe . I have been
training very hard for the last couple
weeks so I gave everything I had today
to become third so I am very happy

was clear that Luis was not going to back down.
The fight was on for the gold as both Luis and
Gomez interchangeably took turns leading the
other on the two-lap run. But with about 300
metres to go, Luis produced one final kick to blast
past Gomez, ultimately claiming his first WTS
crown.

he swim, as usual, was led by Richard
Varga (SVK). With him were the strong
Russian swimmers Dmitry Polyanskiy
and former European Champion Ivan Vasiliev.
Together, the men worked to create a small
lead along with Italians Delian Stateff and Alessandro Fabian.
When race favourite Javier Gomez Noya (ESP)
left T1, his foot slipped from the pedal causing
his bike to veer to the left and nearly crashed.
He struggled to get his shoes fitted again and
by the time he set off, the race leaders were
away up the road.
Once they were free from T1, the strong cyclists
worked hard to maintain command of the race
but soon they were joined by the Norwegian
biking powerhouse, Blummenfelt.
Meanwhile, Gomez stopped at the wheel station
to change his front wheel due to the damage
caused in T1. He then joined a small group with
Yegor Martynenko (UKR) and before too long
this group had caught the chase group.
However the powerful 20-man lead group pushed hard to create distance, taking the leading
peloton further and further away. As they began the climb with two laps to go, it was Russian Alexander Bryukhankov, who slid out the
back of the group with a rear wheel puncture.
With the six lap bike course in the books, Hauss
immediately stamped his mark on the race by
setting a blistering pace. Behind him five athletes were struggling to find anything like that
pace and it was amongst them that the battle
began for the silver and bronze.
Hauss pushed harder and harder on the twisting course and established a commanding lead
that would take him to the finish with almost a
minute’s advantage.
Behind, the chasing pack lost members, got
new ones and finally with a sprint for the finish
it was Blummenfelt and Riederer who sprinted
down to the finish line. With a last push, it was
Riederer, on home soil, who took silver and a
jubilant Blummenfelt who took bronze.

MEETING
David Hauss :
Rio is tomorrow...
European champion in July, 4th of the test event in Rio in August, David is now in the ascendancy before Chicago.
Trimax-Hebdo explains the beginning of his season and his last great performances!
David HAUSS
After a difficult spring, you come back in a great
shape and more motivated than ever... Can you
explain us the beginning of your season where you
had a lot of doubts?
How did your motivation come back?
Indeed, the beginning of my season was hard, I
had a hard time getting motivated and finding the
will to work as much as I wanted. I had a boy last
October, and we’ve decided to stay in Switzerland

until January so the conditions were difficult. I
tried to work on the run to find a good level again.
Then I was unlucky, and the doubts arrived. I
would say that it was rather my motivation than
my level which was low. I wanted to have the same
level as before but I had changed and I was living
differently. You have to adapt all the time.

What was your ambition before these European
championships?
I approached this event peacefully as someone
who prepared this race and who just want to do
what he can do. My last trainings and races made
me confident and showed me than I was back for
real. I would lie if I said that I didn’t think about
winning.
What feeling did you have? Was it important for
you who live in Switzerland to win in front of your
family?
Yes obviously, my motivation was even stronger, I
work with challenges and this race was a serious
one. Moreover, I’ve been living in Switzerland for
one year now, so my family and some close friends
came to support me...
How did the race go?
I went out of the water with the first guys. In the
first transition, when I went out with my bike, I saw
Gomez arriving towards his bike, and I thought
:» He didn’t swim very well, he mustn’t be very
good», and very quickly I was told that the gap was
getting bigger. We organized so that he couldn’t
come back. We knew after 15K that we would fight
for the title between us.
The next day you raced the relay. It was audacious
from you to run barefoot... Was it planned or
completely spontaneous?
And consequently, how did you feel on the run of
this race?
Yes, audacious but only the victory was important.
I made sure 5 minutes before the start that I could
run barefoot without penalizing the team. I gave
myself 15% of chances to run barefoot and kept
this idea in the back of my mind. The situation
was such that in T2 when we left the bike for the
win, I had to start as quick as possible and beat my
contenders. As I’m used to running barefoot, it was
natural for me. Concerning the run barefoot at
more than 20km/h, I would say that the technic,
even if it’s creole, goes to pot, and hopefully there
was not a second lap because my finger toes would
have suffered...
When did you know you would win?
I was confident, I thought that it was the chance to
shine and win a beautiful victory. Once again, I was
feeling strong on the run, but we never know what
can happen. I try to control what I can control, and
I face the rest as I can... The others had to want it
more than I did.

Do you think that you will create a new technic to
have faster transitions?
No, I don’t think so, many athletes are not able to
run like that even for 1,5K. It was just interesting for
our sport to talk about it in the media and that’s a
good thing!

TRAINING
TRAINING
Overtraining
O
vertraining can result from a hormonal,
nutritional, emotional, muscular, neurological imbalance, or from other sources.
This imbalance can cause fatigue, depression, injuries and decline of performance, to quote only
some.
1
.“Functional overtraining” : first stage of
the syndrom, first signals. Generally quite
subtle symptoms that can indicate that
we reach overtraining. At this phase, it is
necessary to listen to your body and take
the necessary measures very rapidly.
3
Three phases for three types of
overtraining :
The overtraining syndrom appears in 3 phases :
2
. “Sympathetical form of
overtraing” : a very obvious stage,
associated with mechanical and
hormonal imbalance, as well as
very concrete nervous imbalance,
which causes a whole series of
signals and symptoms.
.“Parasympathetic overtraining” : an ultimate
and serious stage of overtraining which has for
consequence various important hormonal and
neurological factors, and increased incidence
of injuries.
The overtraining syndrom leads to poor athletic performance and training, but not only : a decrease in
testosterone, altered immune status and increase in muscular breakdown has an incidence in everyday
life at work and at home.
Overtraining happens when an athlete performs more training than the body can recover from - generally characterized as an
unexpected decline in performance and persistent fatigue. The primary cause is excessive training over a long period of time
combined with inadequet rest. There is a relation between overtraining and recovery : many athletes attempt to do more work than
they can physycally tolerate. They believe that the harder they train, the faster they’ll run. Their bodies can’t fully recover between
the training sessions. They so come to the point where performance declines.
But, because there is not only one cause when talking about overtraining, it is commonly called overtraining syndrom (or OTS).
There is a long list of symptoms that are present in many but not all cases. It is very individualized, so one athlete might exhibit
different symptoms than another.
Overtraining is not only bound
with sports ...
We are used to think that overtraining
is connected with sports, but other
factors of our everyday life can
contribute to the overtraing syndrom.
Major stress at work or personal
problems, social obligations, bad sleep,
as well as other non sport-related
factors can develop an overtraining
syndrom in a indirect way.

COACHING
Treatment
One can recover from overtraining, having identified
the cause, it will be necessary to adopt the good
attitude. It is wrong to think that a little rest will
allow a faster recovery.
>>
As usual, to resolve various problems, we first have to find out the cause ; by being correctly
realized, heart rate monitoring, maximal effort test is the best solution to determine if the
athlete is in the first phase of overtraining. Then follows the analysis of metabolic markers in blood
and hormones.
>>
Another way of evaluation is a questionnaire about the quality of sleep, training, performance
level, mental state, infections to be answered honestly with a coach or even better a healthcare
professional …
>>
>>
A nutritional analysis made by a professional, allows to reveal the balance of macro and
micronutriments in the daily diet.
The key for an athlete who comes up with overtraining is to immediately adapt the training schedule
before a complete follow-up with a healthcare professional.
- divide by two (or more) the training volume.
- Stop anaerobic training as well as any competition. In phase of overtraining, working with high
intensity impacts the body, and competitions are only going to affect mentally the athlete even more in
case of a disappointing performance. According to the phase of overtraining in which you are, it might be
possible to maintain intensity but lower the volume.
- During recovery, it will be important to rebuild the aerobic bases during around 3 months, without
including any competition or anaerobic work.
>>
A healthy diet plays a very important role. In an overtraining phase, it is necessary to ask for a
personalized diet follow-up. Here are some recommendations :
- Eliminate food with high glycemic index, like sugar and refined flours. Moderate carbohydrates
during the day, because their consumption raises the cortisol level.
It is necessary to eat less and with fewer frequencies to control the sugar and cortisol rate. Even more
when the athlete presents signs of depression, fatigue, excessive hunger sensations and bad sleep. It is
also recommended to moderate proteins.
Overtraining is a serious problem, it will be necessary to identify where the problem comes from. In
case of triathlon, the cause can be only one of the
three disciplines. But resting from one discipline
by practicing more another, will help on the fatigue of the discipline itself, but to the heart, stress
is stress !
As with almost everything else health related, prevention is the key. A training log is the best method
to monitor progress. It gives a global overview of
your training and helps find the moment where
perfomance declines and the reasons why.
And never forget : clever training is the path to faster times and good health.

de Janeiro Test Event, ensuring he would
line up again in 2016 as he fulfilled both his National Federation’s requirements for Olympic qualification and earned Spain a spot on the start list.
“It feels great to have my qualification for Rio. I enjoyed racing the course, it was a tough race but I felt
quite good. I was saving some energy for the last two
laps of the run because I am training for World Championships, so it was nice to win, I wouldn’t say it was
easy, but it was controlled so I am really happy,” he
said.
Vincent Luis (FRA) also secured France a berth
to Rio, when he crossed over in second, simultaneously fulfilling his Federation’s qualification
guidelines while Richard Murray ensured South Africa would be represented in 2016 when he
earned a bronze with the most impressive run of
the day.
Two distinct groups formed on the one-lap ocean
swim at Copacabana Beach, with Richard Varga
(SVK), Henri Schoeman (RSA), and a string of
French men including Luis, Dorian Coninx (FRA),
and Pierre Le Corre (FRA) exiting the water first.
Getting out in front in the 1.5km swim was pivotal

lifications.
“I was in a bit of pressure because some of the French
cut out, so it was really hard. But I was confident on the
course, it was a very technical bike leg, but I swam good
so I was under pressure but it was good.”
Together with the likes of Gomez, Alistair Brownlee (GBR), Aaron Royle (AUS), Igor Polyanskiy

(RUS), Tommy Zaferes (USA) and Alessandro Fabian (ITA), eleven men pushed out a heady lead
on the tough eight-lap bike course. Their lead
held strong despite three men dropping off the
bike, one of which was Varga in a crash.
Down to eight, with six laps to go, the lead peloton
surged to more than a minute lead over the chase,
which included Murray, Mario Mola (ESP), David Hauss (FRA), and Joao Silva (POR). While the
chase looked like it was starting to work together,
any plans of reducing the deficit to the leaders
was short lived and the gap only increased over
the 40km course.
Knowing he needed a top-six finish to qualify for
France’s Olympic team, Luis launched an attack
immediately after racking his bike, but champion
Gomez gunned him down and they entered the
first of four laps together with Brownlee trailing
behind. Further back, with Olympic qualification
on their minds, Royle and Zaferes held strong.

The second lap sang a different tune, with Gomez
breaking away and creating even more distance
to the Olympic reigning champion Brownlee,
and Luis sandwiched between. Royle crept up on
Brownlee but a massive run from Murray meant
the South African was picking off men at an incredible rate.
On the back half of the 10km run, Gomez extended
his lead, making it clear he’d cross the finish tape
first with Luis second, Murray changed the game
for many as he sailed past man after man pulling
himself up from a minute gap onto the podium.
“I don’t think it has sunk in yet, I know that is such a
cliché thing to say, but you know at the start of the day
I had to motivate myself because it was going to be difficult to get. The swim was real rough, I came up quote
far back, but even so the run was one of my best today,
so overall in the end I am happy with the way things
turned out today.”

Huaka by Hoka One
Introduction
Personally, we use Hoka One One shoes for several years now. First, when wearing these oversized
shoes, we looked like aliens and everybody was
watching at us ! But the brand became more and
more known and now, wearing these shoes, is just
normal. It is also true to say that Hoka improved its
shoes, revisited its design to make it visually lighter with a narrow shape... a lot of things changed,
except its cushioned midsole, which is exactly why
we choose these shoes !
As we already said, we are Hoka One addicts for
some seasons now and a few Bondi’s are gone
shabby ...
We took Hoka shoes for our long running training
sessions only, never during a race, because of their
weight. What a surprise this year, when we discovered the Hoka Huaka, an ultra light model , keeping the cushioned midsole. As real aficionados of
the brand, we had to test them as quick as possible
in a race : the Ironman of Nice. Here’s the result.
What makes the essence of the
brand, the extreme cushioning
This month, we tested a slightly special pair of shoes that we used on the Ironman of Nice and which is used by our two recent
French long distance champions, Charlotte Morel and Frédéric Belaubre. Discover the Hoka One Huaka.

In action
Lightweight : only 265 g on size EU 42 2/3
2mm offset/drop : Very slight drop, it provides
really smooth, natural rides and quicker transitions to the forefoot. It could nearly belong to
the minimalist shoe category !
Breathability
The shoes blew us away !
The sensation of lightness is very present from
the beginning, even if it is rather disturbing to
wear such big and at the same time very light
shoes. The visual constrast between the sole unit
and the upper unit increases the sensation of
lightness. This is not really surprizing, because
it is the reason why we had chosen these Huaka. We were excited to check that in spite of a
design diet, the cushioning was the same as our
previous Hoka shoes, that made that we loved
them so much.
One long ride was enough to reassure us : no
doubt, this Huaka is a real Hoka !
R-Mat sole : a combination of rubber and EVA,
this new material presents exclusive caracteristics : a «rockered» profile, phenomenal grip and
exceptional rebound. The springy midsole material can also make the runner feel as being propelled forward. Its better durability also makes it
a preferred option for everyday use.
Grip : Perfect for both gravel road running and
trail road running. It is also a trustworthy shoe
used by runners who prefer to run on uneven
and challenging terrains. It’s also a definite, agile
option for long-distance running.
Heal-puller for ease of fit
The cushioning is present, but not oppressive,
the shoe remains very dynamic, it does not crash
on the road, on contrary it offers a real interesting ride compared to our old Bondi’s. If we
add that very low drop of 2mm, we really have
a very lively shoe. Its behavior is diametrically
different to the first visual impression. It really incites to start the ride on the front of your
shoe and rather naturally urges to accelerate the
rhythm. It will be necessary to learn how to canalize speed with this Huaka if we want to last !
These characteristics are also interesting during
your split training sessions, light and dynamic,
but with an interesting cushioning to limit important shocks on the high speed series.
This Hoka Huaka bluffed us!

On short or long training sessions, your feet will be
happy to feel the Hoka effect. It seems like even
fatigue and muscle soreness is being delayed.
Honestly, we do not hesitate to say that this shoe
can ride everywhere. We had chosen it for the marathon on an Ironman, but after testing the shoe,
it really can be used for short- or long training sessions, always with huge satisfaction.
If this Huaka is intended to ride on the road, it is
also great on a forest path. The oversize sole erases
the small rocks and other roots ... It will however
be necessary to stay on the path, this Hoka is not
a trail shoe. In fact, the sensation is rather simple
to describe : wether you run on road, grass, path,
... you have the impression to always run on the
same ground cover.
The only negative point is the outer sole. It marks
very fast and the front grips disappear rapidly.
However, it seems not to evolve over time, so that
we can say that the shoe has a good life expectancy, around 1000 km.
With HOKA, Frédéric BELAUBRE
offers himself a new challenge in his triathlete career
Holder of multiple titles and Olympic selections on short formats, Fred turns now to long distance races. In 2015,
Frédéric chose to join with HOKA.
Attentive to the technological breakthroughs and ambitions of this brand, sensitive to the challenges proposed by
the Hoka team, Frédéric BELAUBRE decided to give a new dash to his passion for triathlon. From this season on
and for the next three years, he will represent the brand created in Annecy (France). His ambition this year is a
title at the half-ironman world championship. He is also technical advisor at HOKA for the development of a vast
range of triathlon dedicated products.
«Running is the third and last phase of a triathlon. It is what makes it so important to a competitor, because running is the
direct link with our final performance on a race. By taking into account the fatigue accumulated in swimming and cycling, it
is easy to understand the importance of effort management and the necessity of a perfect shoe. Hoka products are going to
give me a new dash that will take me fast and hopefully far ... I am always striving for excellence».
We not hesitate to say
that this shoe can do
everything

Conclusion
Here at Trimax, we are really conquered by this
new Huaka. It is the shoe we were looking for on
long distance races, but in fact, it is even more !
These shoes really surprized us, even on rides
where we did not expect them : they can go almost
everywhere. So, yes, we will for sure use them on
Half and Ironman, but we will also use them on
much shorter formats !
