We’re in July already ! The month of one of the major sports events of
the year : the famous Tour de France. A real highlight for every triathlete, because they all are passionate cyclers.
There is a common history and a lot of footbridges between both
sports. Triathlon influenced and still influences the cycling world :
bringing inspiration and modernization. This is the subject of my column.
During the Tour de France, life goes on. You continue training. And
also running …

Only a few days ahead of the Tour de France, the Ironman of Nice took
place. It still is one of the key events in our discipline. Our report in the
very heart of the race will make you relive the IM France and discover
the feelings of the participants.
In this issue, you will also read about the Tri du Ventoux, WTS London and other numerous great performances...
Finally, in our equipment section, we will focus on wheels … Some models evolved with the help of triathletes and ended on … the Tour de France ! The one presented in this issue is a handmade model.

n the beginning of June was held the first
edition of the VentouxMan. A triathlon
which offers to climb the «Géant de

For its first edition, the race was full! At the
finish, they were 478 to have succeeded the bet.
The organizers can be proud of an event which

the office. I am very happy that I started the season
with a win. Actually, I set a little message that I am
back. I would like to thank my team and my sponsors to support me in the difficult times leading up
to this race. Now, it is time for me to recover and taper for the ITU World Championships in 2 weeks.
I am really looking forward to this; the distance is a
little longer than here. Two weeks of recovery after
that we have the biggest race in the world which
is challenge Roth, I hope to repeat my earlier win
there.”
Bockel was third out of the water in 24:24, just three
seconds down on leader Thomas Strange (DEN).
He exited T1 in the lead and there he stayed for the
rest of the race, but it was not an easy win. Bockel
was never more than 1:50 ahead of the chase pack
and Strange was certainly not one to give in, reducing the lead to 56 seconds by the time they crossed
the line.
Danish triathlete Michelle Vesterby managed to
shake Catherine Jameson (GBR) and Mary Beth
Ellis (USA) on the women’s half distance race, securing a true home victory – in more than one sense.
“That was for my husband,” she said, having just
crossed the finish line. Michelle Vesterby is originally from Herning – and her husband is the
CHALLENGEDENMARK Race Director.
Vesterby had the win in her sights right from
the start, exiting the swim in third place behind
Jameson and Ellis. However, Jameson proved uncatchable on the bike, heading into T2 2:06 ahead
Dirk Bockel (LUX) was across the finish line at the first ever CHALLENGE DENMARK while local, Michelle Vesterby (DEN) took

Dirk Bockel, who really was keen on racing again,

guess the Vikings arrived today. The bike part was
extremely fast. Martin Jensen was pushing the
pace. It was tough for me to hold on. On the run,
I was able to hold it together. It is also very good
that my hip didn’t hurt. It was a very solid day at

of Vesterby. Vesterby’s love for running shone
through and by the 6km mark she had taken the
lead, which she continued to extend to take the
win in 4:19:32
“We have been looking forward to this day for a very
long time, and it is so cool to be here today with so many
winners; those finishing first as well as all those completing the half- or full distance. We would not be able
to stand here today as winners if it weren’t for the hard
work of all the volunteers and the support from the cities of Herning and Billund as well as Sport Event Denmark,” says Race Director Claus Vesterby.

In the full distance race, Chris Fischer (DEN) took
out the men’s race in a personal best of 8:23:29
having led from the first few km of the bike. The
women’s race was won by Beate Goertz (GER) in
9:22:28.
The three legends of triathlon, Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack, Thomas Hellriegel and Luc Van Lierde
also made it to Denmark. They teamed up in a legendary relay team that finished fifth.

On the Prom’ it’s
«Boris from Nice»
Everybody knows «Brice de Nice»... Yet, on June 28th, the public only saw Boris. He is not blond, he doesn’t have any unruly
locks and he didn’t expect the wave to dive into the sea and to win in front of the Spanish Victor Del Corral and the French Romain
Guillaume. Boris Stein thus enters in the closed circle of IM France winners.
Regarding the women, his alter ego is not Alice (referring to Alice from Nice) but the American Cait Snow. Second of the event last
year, she succeeded to concretize her participation by a victory.

S
What are you doing this summer ?
ince the end of Zamora (with 5 victories)
and Van Lierde eras (3 victories), for two
years, the IM France seems more open.
If last year, it was another Belgian who once
again won, we renamed at this occasion the
Prom’ as Promenade des Belges, this year the
one who could predict the podium was very
clever. Who would win this 10th anniversary
edition... An American? A German? A Spanish?
Or would this race be finally be won by a French
again? Since the first edition and Hervé Faure’s
victory, Frenchies are not the most successful
at home. This year, the well-represented
tricolor team could have good expectations
with Romain Guillaume (TOP 10 Hawaii 2014),
Bertrand Billard (double world champion 2013
and 2014), Sylvain Sudrie (quintuple National
champion), Anthony Pannier or Jérémy
Jurkiewicz who would finish his 11th Ironman.
And the race began well for the French because
out of 6 men in front after 3,8 kms swim, only
Drew Scott was disrupting this blue wave with
a time of 50’30. The main rivals who were the
German Stein (2nd in Aix) was more than 6
minutes behind and the Spanish Victor Del
Corral almost 8 minutes behind.
And from the beginning, Romain Guillaume

Romain Guillaume
took the lead. No question to look at each other
and let the German and the Spanish come
back, he knew the running qualities of his two
contenders. He knew he had to push hard on
the bike which is his strength to take the most
lead as possible. He also had the advantage of
having trained a lot on this course and to know
all its specificities. He has been living in this
region for a few months now and the roads
taken by the IM France are his training
field. Bertrand Billard also wanted to be
remarkable on the bike. His bike accident
a few weeks ago where he broke his
collarbone disturbed his season. To come
back as soon as possible, he has raced
every week-end since the beginning of
June and has beautifully finished this
month with the IM. The motivation
was here but the legs not as much, his
disturbed preparation didn’t allow him to
play the first part on this event. So when
Boris Stein passed him only 5 kms from
TRI
hebdo
35
REPORT
the finish, he didn’t even push to stay with
him. He knew that his knee wouldn’t allow him
to run the whole marathon.
Romain Guillaume arrived at T2 with 6 minutes
lead. A comfortable lead? It’s uncertain when
we know that the second one is Boris Stein,
known for his running qualities, or Del Corral,
who has begun to push hard on the Prom’ with
his 13 minutes of delay.
The two men began their lift. Stein came back
progressively while Victor Del Corral passed
many other contenders! At km 21, Romain
lost his first place against the German and the
second place against the Spanish. The podium
was fixed and wouldn’t change until the finish
line.
Cait SNOW
who was coming back to racing after long
difficult weeks because of health problems.
As her boyfriend Romain Guillaume, Jeanne
lives in Nice. She trains very regularly on the
Ironman course. Thus she took advantage of
her knowledge of this race and her cycling
qualities to take the lead. The female bike race
was reduced to a long solitary ride of Jeanne
Collonge... Unfortunately the run was not as
good for her. Victim of dehydration (more
than 35 degrees in the shade), she had to
stop after seeing her contenders passing her
the ones after the others. Therefore, the race
turned into a dual between the two American
athletes. Lisa Roberts came back regularly
kilometers after kilometers. With a bike split
almost similar to Cait and a run split 4 minutes
faster for Lisa, Cait Snow won thanks to the
precious minutes she acquired on the
swimming part! After finishing 2nd last
year, Cait Snow now climbs on the highest
step of the podium in 9:24:50.
To note the French athlete Linda
Guinoiseau who finished at the 3rd place
in the female general ranking. However,
as she is registered as an Age Grouper (4044), she can’t access the podium reserved
for the professional ranking. Emma Pooley,
who finished a few seconds after linda,
finally took this 3rd place.
Jeanne Colonge passes over the Var plain
In the female race, the podium was
also very open. As for the men, last
year’s winner Tine Deckers was not
racing. Her runner-ups Cait Snow
and Lisa Roberts were here. And the
first one to show herself was Cait
Snow with the best women swim
split in 57’43. She brought with
her the French Jeanne Collonge

Our tester-redactor, Sébastien RODRIGUEZ was racing his second IM race of the
season in the search of a qualification for Hawaii which he missed in South Africa,
a difficult race and very early in the season. This time, he made no mistake with a
24th place in the general ranking and a second place in his category, synonym of the
qualification. He comes back on the inside of this edition of the 10th anniversary.
For me, the Ironman Nice is unmissable,
almost at home, on the roads that I know
by heart and which perfectly suit me. Thus
it was difficult not to be part of this party
on the end of June on the Promenade,
especially this year for the 10 years of
the event! Moreover, this year the good
weather is here, maybe even a little bit too
much, the day will be very good!
I love this atmosphere in the morning on
the Plage du Centenaire, a mix of joy, stress,
38

impatience. I find these last minutes before
being liberated always very long! The swim
start in nice is quite visually impressive, but
rather fluid from the inside. On this point,
Yves Cordier’s team is perfect, the course
is very clear, avoiding any «traffic jam»,
and allowing the group to stretch with
a first turn at 800m. The system of start
zone by level also helps to create a very
fluid start, and especially because most of
the competitors seem to play the game and
take place in their appropriate zone.

Bioracer is a Belgian sports clothing company
established in 1986,
which burns with passion for cycling, triathlon and
its enthusiasts. 468 medals have already been won
at the Olympics, World Championships and
National Championships, by athletes wearing our
sportswear: men, women and youth in all
disciplines from various countries and cultures.
T
riathlon is one of the most demanding
sports. But just like any other sport, training
is the determining factor. The harder, longer
and more efficient you train, the more you get out of
your body, the more you improve your split times,
the better you become.
Where Bioracer excells is the 360 degrees approach
to triathlon. For starters, our cycling and running
speedwear gives you the chance to get the most out
of your training. You can focus on your training
zones, our clothing will keep you comfortable at all
times. For your races we have the best suits in our tri
range. From Tri tank tops and shorts to full fledged
aero suits, we have the right clothing for every
triathlon race
Design to function. Reduced to the max.
Functionality, comfort, and performance. No more.
No less. Shapes follow function and fabrics follow
climate. Triathletes demand other things from his
clothing than a cyclist. Bioracer provides a broad
triathlon range with clothing items technically
differentiating from each other. Whether you’re a
long distance triathlete or participating at sprint
triathlons, whether you compete individually or in a
team, Bioracer has the right clothing for you.
Roots in the sport.
What makes us unique is the fact that our 3 product
managers all have roots in the sport.
Our PM’s in cycling wear are former cycling pros,
our PM triathlon is an active triathlete, currently
preparing for IM Maastricht 2015. Their expertise
and knowledge gives us the chance to develop the

After a long transition, let’s go for the
180k of the bike course. It’s a course that I
particularly like, very varied, very technical,
and above all wonderful! In addition, it’s a
single loop, maybe a little bit disappointing
for the public and families, but so agreeable
for the competitors, we never get bored on
this course which seems to finally go very
fast. This year, the main difficulty was the
heat, it was very hot from the beginning of
the day, I chose to ride cautiously, without
stopping to eat and hydrate!
We still have a marathon to run, at the
warmer hours of the day. In Nice, it’s simple:
4 return trips on the Prom’, it’s long, it’s
monotonous, but the advantage is to cross
very often the other competitors and our
friends, anyway, we are never «alone in the
world». Regarding the weather conditions,
I chose to run as I rode: cautiously! It was
certainly the good tactic today because
there were big damage, among the Pros
and Age groupers. Hopefully, the Ironman
organization does this the hard way, with a
food station every 1,5k and showers on the
way, we could perfectly deal with this heat
wave.
Finally, after a very long day, we have a long
time to fully take advantage of our finish
line, red carpet, full tribunes on each side,
and the official photographers of TrimaXhebdo ;-), DJ Style still so dynamic and now
you can hear : «YOU ARE AN IRONMAN»!
To conclude, this edition special 10th
anniversary was once again perfectly put
together. The heat wave was perfectly
manageable thanks to the very numerous
food stations on the bike and on the
marathon, and despite my fear before the
start, no jellyfish seen on the swim, phew!
Let’s meet in 2016?

TRAINING
TRAINING
Facing the
heat wave
Advice n°1 :
Change your planning
Advice n° 2 :
Don’t try to perform
Move your sessions. Avoid to train at the warmer
hours of the day. Certainly, whatever the triathlon,
you risk beginning the run at the warmer hours of
the day. But if you can’t avoid it in the race, avoid to
impose yourself such conditions during your training. Studies have shown that the heat could be
a hindrance to your performance and wears your
body out. So you should move your sessions in the
morning or in the evening when the temperatures
fall a little bit in order to preserve your body.
Don’t try to beat your records. with the heat,
performance decreases. It’s simply physiologic.
As the total blood volume of a human doesn’t
vary a lot, the more the inside temperature
increases, the more the quantity of available
blood for the physical activity decreases. And
it happens despite a very significative increase
of the heart rate. A less oxygenated muscle
becomes immediately less performing. So you
will also have to adapt your training. Such as
the effort, recovery is not favored by the heat.
You should prefer the endurance training in the
morning and the specific sessions in the evening
when the sun is less hot.
Advice n°3 :
Run just with your feeling and listen
to your body
Once the first signal of your body, you will have
to stop your training, find a source of freshness
and hydration. When you feel the overheating, a
sudden feeling of being cold, of goose-bump, stop
your effort and refresh yourself and drink. These
are the first symptoms of trouble in the thermo-regulator system, if you keep going, you risk
the overheating.
The heat wave has been a little bit everywhere in Europe for a few days. Thermometers the 35 degrees, as we saw on the IM France
or IM Frankfurt, these conditions give your bodies a hard time. And organizations have also needed the Emergencies for the triathletes who couldn’t anticipate the heat wave or victim of a failure because of the heat.
Adopt the good reflex to face the heat wave!
C
ommercials also prevent from the negative effects of the heat and advise not to do sports
when there is a heat wave. And yet, the season is not finished and the off season is still
far. However, even if you must maintain your training sessions, you have to adopt the best
attitude in order to avoid overheating, dehydration and finally not to be able to finish your season.

TRAINING
Advice n°4 :
keep your body fresh
Sweating plays a part of regulation of the body temperature. The less you will solicit this mechanism and
the less you risk the dehydration. Prefer sessions in the
shade, prefer this summer to run under the trees than
along the sea... For your short and intensive sessions,
try to find a shady path, which will be less demanding
for your body than the track under the sun and heat.
To keep your body fresh, also adopt the good clothes.
Allow the sweat to evaporate, it guarantees that you
maintain your body at the right temperature. Thus
choose an ample, light and aerated suit (short, tee-shirt
or technical tank top).
The cap has also the double vocation to protect you
from the sun but also to bring you a source of freshness
if you can humidify it regularly.
Advice n°5 :
Drink before, during, after...
Without moderation!
Maintain your body at a good temperature
when the heat makes you sweat a lot.
The latter can bring about a dehydration
if the sweating is not compensated by a
sufficient hydric intake.
Drink very regularly (0,75 to 1 liter per
hour of racing) in order to maintain a
good blood volume and thus allow the
evaporation phenomenon to fully play its
part of «AC». During your training, prefer
the regular intake. Don’t wait for the thirst
before hydrating because it will already be
too late!
Advice n°6 :
your training doesn’t end at the end of the
session, don’t forget your recovery.
We will never repeat it enough but recovery is part of the
training. If you take some time to recover, it will be easier
to do your sessions the ones after the others without being
tired.
After the effort, the recovery must be done in the 30 minutes after the effort when the body is still hot.
Recovery includes not only the stretching and the shower,
but also the rehydration.
Indeed, you have a weight loss because you have lost a lot
of water, it is important now to rehydrate with fresh drinks
and/or a mineralized water in order to compensate the
loss of minerals linked to sweating.

Revo Race Wheel
GLUTEN FREE
range
This month, Trimax tried a pair of artisanal wheels for the IM France, let’s discover the wheels Revo Race Wheel.
Introduction
The wheels Revo Race Wheels are mounted by
Stéphane Platon, who has the company REVO
RACE CUSTOM BIKE, situated in Aisne, in
Picardie. He is first of all a passionate of bike
and beautiful material, this is why he has begun
this activity with several roles, the mounting of
artisanal wheels but also personalized paintings
and reparations on carbon.

GLUTEN-FREE products
Some athletes are intolerant to gluten, and other say that they are
particularly sensitive to it and choose to consume gluten-free products.
For this test, and as regards our participation to
the Ironman France, Stéphane has mounted a pair
of wheels totally adapted to the event, and above
all to our profile of cyclist, on the basis of a pair of
wheels RT30 with a profile of rim of 30mm.

MATERIAL TESTING
Why artisanal wheels?
Silicone laces...
What for ?
Wheels which come from fabrics are
mounted industrially and the human
hand doesn’t intervene a lot. Their goal
is mainly to reduce the costs, wheels
are produced in series to answer to very
general needs, in order to target at a
very wide range of profiles and above
all of clients. As a result, the rays strain
corresponds to a standard, not to your
weight, your practice, your level...
An artisanal mounting of your wheels
realized by an artisan must allow you
to personalize your wheels to your
weight, your practice and your budget.
The strains will be more balanced,
which should also improve a lot the life
duration of your wheels, compared to a
fabric mounting.
Then, for the purists and material
lovers, choosing your components one
by one, discussing technic, profiles,
objectives, are parameters which will
give you a big pleasure to ride with
your wheels! Yes your wheels, because
they will definitely be your wheels and
not your friends’, the one you designed
according to your needs.
This gait is the one we have followed
during this testing, mounting a pair of
wheels for the Ironman Nice, a wheel which suits to the race and also to the profile of the cyclist. For
information, our tester is a former cyclist, quite light and with a polyvalent profile. On this course of
Nice, he wants to do a time around 5h and 5h30 for an average power of 230-240 watts.

The hubs
The rims
For the mounting of hubs, multiple solutions are
offered to you. In Revo Race Wheel, you can choose
among the following brands: Dtswiss, chris king, hope,
tune.
But also the home-made hub Revo Race Wheel, which
we have chosen for this testing.
The hub is built in aluminum 7075 T6 for the hub body
and axis, with a treatment T6 which allows to harden
the material.
They are available in an anodized black color.
They have a concave plate which allows a better course
of the rays.
The drilling of holes is adapted to aero rays.
They have a gearing system of the freewheel of 3 clicks
with nine points of anchorage in total, that is to say
three points of anchoring on each clicks (which makes
a very pleasing sound in freewheel!)
The gearing track is 48 tooth against 24 on a standard
hub which gives him a dubbed reactivity in restart.
The mounting of a wheel begins with the
choice of the rim profile. Revo Race Wheel
offers carbon rims in high module fiber from
TORAY. The finishing is in carbon 3K matt,
which makes appear a thin braiding of the
fiber.
These rims follow a trend of large rims with
a width of 23mm, which bring a better lateral
rigidity, also for a better collage of your tubular.
Usually, a standard rim has a width of 20,5mm.
Be careful to check if it will fit on your bike,
especially on an old frame.
The personalization is made here on the height
of the rim, and many solutions are offered to
you.

tire versions.
24.38.50.60.88 mm in tire with aluminum
braking version.
The rays
For the rays, Revo Race Wheels offers Sapim CX Ray. For them, it is the best on the market
now with the DT Swiss Aerolite. A lab testing confirms that the Sapim CX Ray is a little bit
more resisting than the DT Aerolite.
So more resisting but above all less expensive, which explains the choice of the Sapim, allowing
to offer a very good value for money mounting (990 € for the RT30).
After hesitating, we have chosen to mount a
pair of wheels in 30mm, an ideal profile for a
hilly course as Nice and for a light cyclist. A
choice which should allow not to loose on the
flat parts and to be very at ease in hills with
a pair of wheels very light, and also to ensure
fast and securing descents with an agile wheel
which doesn’t have too much wind resistance.

Kevlar ligature
In option, you can ask for the kevlar ligature in epoxy resin for 40€ Tax included. It improves
the rigidity of your wheels and also has a convenience in case of ray braking. The latter
remains in place, avoiding to tangle somewhere and eventually provokes a crash or an injury.
Frederik Van Lierde
IRONMAN World Champion
V800.
Chosen by champions.
On the road
To begin, we must confess that the wheels give a
very beautiful style to our Cervélo P5. The colors
match perfectly together, the final look is very
esthetic, even if the P5 usually needs a very high
pair of wheels to enhance it.
Beyond this esthetic detail, we must also confess
that we are adepts of this wheel profile of 30mm.
We must say that in our region of Nice, this rim
height is compatible with a daily use, and in every
type of fields.
On this side, the Revo Race Wheels didn’t
disappoint us, they are as good as wheels of big
companies, concerning the wind resistance as
well as the agility in descents... In hills, this profile
is also very performing, with a very light wheel.
Knowing that a big majority of the rims on the
market come from the same place (except some
rare brands which produce their own rims), no
surprise then.
It’s rather on the general behavior of the wheel
that we have been bluffed! The concept of artisanal
wheels was brand new for us, and we must say that
we were not disappointed. More than the weight
of the wheels, they have an incredible rigidity and
vivacity. The whole also seems incredibly stable
and precise, it is very agreeable in restarts and in
more technical descents!
The hubs also seem very good, the whole is
perfectly fluid, we really feel the gain that the
freewheel body brings with its gearing track of
48 tooth (against 24 usually). The wheel seems
to react very quickly, there is no dead time in
restarts.
In summary, we have been really bluffed by
these artisanal wheels, the hand-made mounting,
corresponding to our needs, seems to really bring
something more on the wheel behavior. We didn’t
hesitate one second to mount these wheels on
our bike for the IM Nice!
