Seattle-ben virágzik a magyar kulturális élet!
Hungarian cultural life is thriving In Seattle.
Csak hogy egy pár példát említsek a
WMASZ februári eseményeiből: A csoportjaink rendszeres működése mellett
időt és energiát találunk az egyre népszerűbb irodalmi estek megrendezésére.
Let me give a few examples from our
events organized in February: Besides
the regular operation of our groups, we
found time and energy to put on the ever
more popular Literary Nights.
Táncházaink jól látogatottak, a farsangi
bulin szép számban összejöttünk, magyar
vonatkozású mozi estre ruccantunk ki
(The Final Cut), és mostanra már a Rajkó
koncert is megrendezésre került. E szép
programajánlat nem azt jelenti, hogy nem
lenne hely további fejlődésre. Ellenkezőleg! A minap, amikor a szövetség ösztöndíj pályázatának felhívásán dolgoztam,
arra gondoltam, hogy milyen nagyszerű
lenne, ha tinédzsereinket és egyetemista
korú fiataljainkat egy, az idősek klubjához
hasonlatos csoportba lehetne tömöríteni.
Egy ilyen csoportnak könnyebben lehetne
a tagok érdeklődésének megfelelő információkat továbbítani, és vélemények kicserélésére is sokkal könnyebben nyílna
lehetőség.
Táncház is well attended, and at the
Farsang Party (Carnival) we had a ball.
We went to see "The Final Cut," a Hungarian movie, and by now the Rajkó concert has taken place. This nice set of programs doesn't mean that we wouldn't
welcome improvement. To the contrary!
Just the other day when I was working
on the advertising for the HAAW scholarship program, I thought, it would be
awesome if we somehow could create a
group for our young. It could be in the
format of our Seniors club, a place where
young people could exchange ideas, concerns, possibilities. Perhaps HAAW
could assist the young in a way targeted
specifically for them…

Azt hiszem, hogy idén láttam a legkevesebb embert a farsangi
bulin. Lehet, hogy a zuhogó eső volt az egyik oka, ami sokakat
visszatartott, de engem nem tudott. Gondolom mindenki arra
fogad, hogy a legfőbb okom, hogy elmentem, a farsangi jelmezbe
öltözés volt … hát itt és most be kell valljam, hogy én soha nem
voltam híve a jelmezbe öltözésnek. Lehetett volna bármi fajta
összejövetel, engem más vonzott aznap este Kirklandbe. Az én
célom az volt, hogy találkozhassak rég nem látott barátokkal. Az
új év új változásokat hozott az életembe (új munkahely, új főnök,
új iskola utáni gyerekprogramok) és a rohanó világ nem hagyott
sok időt a baráti látogatásokra. Így hát amikor a farsangi buli
hirdetését olvastam, eldöntöttem, hogy erre el kell jussak – ha
esik, ha fúj. Gondolom sokan vannak így a mai világban, hogy a
hétköznapokat a munka és az iskola utáni gyerekprogramok
uralják, a hétvégéken pedig a többi megmaradt sportprogramok
és családi otthonlétek - és nem is olyan könnyű megpróbálni
mindenhova eljutni.
Amikor beléptem a terembe és megláttam a majdnem üres termet, az első gondolatom az volt, hogy hát jönnek még majd többen később. De amint a konyhából több rám mosolyodó arc bújt
elő, tudtam, hogy én nem fogok itt unatkozni. Inkább pár jó barát vegye körül az embert, mint több tucat, akiket nem is ismer
olyan jól.
Én nagyon jól éreztem magam. Jót beszélgettem a terem egyik
asztalánál, és jót táncoltam a buli vége felé.
Szeretnék köszönetet mondani a szervezőknek, különösképpen
Gulyás Zsuzsinak, hogy segítettek nekem elérnem az egyetlen egy
célomat aznap, hogy barátokkal töltsem az estémet. Lehet, hogy
másnak a farsangi buli másról szólt – a jelmezekről, a házi készítésű vacsoráról, a kitűnő zenéről, vagy Erika csodálatosan finom
csokoládé tortájáról. Nekem, a farsangi buli az emberekről szólt,
és a sok mosolyról, amit úgy hiányoltam már hónapok óta.

Az Örök Fiatalok Klubjának tagjai
február 22-én Dr. Hegyváry Csaba
nagyon informatív előadását élvezhették az emlékezetről, demenciáról, alvászavarokról és más egészségügyi problémákról. Az előadás
után sokan bombáztuk kérdéseinkkel, amelyekre készségesen és türelmesen válaszolt, miközben mi
könnyű ebédünket és Boldizsár
Sándor születésnapi tortáját fogyasztottuk. Ez egy nagyon jó
szombat délután volt!
Legközelebb 2014. március 22-én
13 órakor találkozunk, a Mercer
Island Presbyterian
Church Fireside termében.

Farsang 2014
I think this year was the first time I saw so few people at the
Farsang Party. Maybe the pouring rain kept many away,
but it could not keep me away. I think everybody is guessing
by now that my main reason would be the costume . . . well,
I have to confess, here and now, that I never liked dressing
up in a costume. It could have been any other get-together
or party, I had a different motivation that night. My goal
was to meet up with long-unseen friends. The New Year
brought new changes into my life (new job, new boss, new
after-school kid programs) and the fast-paced world did not
leave me with much time to spare for meeting with friends.
So when I read the news about the upcoming Farsang Party
I decided this was it; I had to make it - rain or shine. I guess
there are quite a few folks in this world whose weekdays are
ruled by their jobs and the after-school kid programs, while
the weekends are filled with the remaining kids' sport programs and with stay-at-home-and-enjoy-family time - knowing that it is not easy to try to make it to every program.
When I stepped into the room and saw the almost empty
space, my first thought was no biggy, more people would
show up later. Nevertheless when I saw all the smiling faces
exiting the kitchen, I knew I would not be bored here. It is
better to be surrounded by a few good friends than by many
that you do not even know that well. I had a great time. I
had great discussions at one of the tables and even danced
at the end of the party. I would like to say thanks to the organizers, in particular to Zsuzsi Gulyás, for helping me
reach my one and only goal for that day: to spend the night
with great friends. Maybe for others the Farsang Party had
other meanings - the costumes, the home-made dinner, the
great sounding music, or Erika's super tasty chocolate
torte. For me, the Farsang Party was about the people
and the smiles that I missed for months.

Forever Young Club
On February 22nd, our
Forever Young Group enjoyed
a very informative lecture
from Dr. Csaba Hegyváry
on memory, dementia, sleep
and general health issues. A lot
of us had questions after his
presentation and he was so
kind and patient to answer
them all, while we were
enjoying our light lunch, and
Alex Boldizsar's Birthday
cake. It was a fun Saturday
afternoon.
We are looking forward to
seeing everyone again on March
22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the
Mercer Island Presbyterian Church in the Fireside Room.

Idén is eljött a farsang ideje a Magyar Iskolában. Nem a szokásos jelmezbe öltözéssel ünnepeltünk, hanem ijesztő busómaszkok készítésével igyekeztünk elijeszteni a csúnya telet.
Rita Larsen elmesélte a gyerekeknek kik is azok a busók és
miért öltenek ijesztő ruhákat és álarcot minden évben a régi
szokások szerint. Ez után minadannyian nekiláttunk a busómaszkok elkészítésének. Csattogtak az ollók, folyt a ragasztó, készült a fonal szakáll és a bab szemölcsök.
Néhányan még szarvakat is ragasztottak, még rémísztőbbé
téve a készülő maszkot. Volt, aki selyempapírral díszített és
volt, aki a vattapamacsot és a madártollakat választotta. A
nagyobbak önállóan, a kisebbek a szülők segítségével alkottak. Fél óra leforgása alatt félelmetesebbnél félelmetesebb
álarcok sorakoztak az asztalon. Ezután mindenki visszavonult a tantermébe a szokásosnál egy kicsit rövidebb magyarórára. Az órák után friss farsangi fánk várta az éhes gyereksereget. A tízórai mindenkinek nagyon ízlett, még a szülők is
megnyalták a tíz ujjukat. Teli pocakkal a közös játékokat is
mindenki jobban élvezte. A kézről kézre járó “vándor csomagot” izgatottan bontották a gyerekek, ajándékot remélve a
rétegek között és a seprűtáncoltatásba is gyorsan belejött
mindenki. Megint egy emlékezetes napot töltöttünk együtt a
Magyar Iskolában. Köszönjük!
Honnan ered a busójárás népszokása?
Az első és legelterjedtebb magyarázat szerint a téltemetés, a
télűzés volt a célja. Az emberek ilyenkor ijesztő ruhákba bújnak, mert azt várják, hogy a tél megijed tőlük, és elszalad.
Az ünneplés végén a tél halálát szimbolizáló szalmabábu égetése történik. A beöltözött emberek kiabálással, kürtszóval
és kolompokkal végigjárták a házakat, udvarokat, majd hamut szórtak szét a portán. Ettől azt remélték, hogy távol tartja a gonosz szellemeket. Az ünnepség fénypontja volt a főtéri
viaskodás a férfiak között, ami régen a férfivá avatást jelentette.
A második történet szerint a busójárás kialakulásának oka a
törökök folytonos támadása volt. Ugyanis a XVI-XVII. században Magyarország török hódoltság alatt állt. Az országnak azonban volt egy olyan része, melyet a monda szerint a török
soha nem tudott elfoglalni. Ez volt a Mohács-sziget, melynek
környéke mocsaras terület volt. Ide húzódtak vissza támadáskor a környékbeli lakosok, a törökök azonban megtalálták ezt az utat, és a sziget ellen indultak. Ekkor a mohácsiak
vezetője, mivel nem volt fegyverük, kitalálta, hogy öltözzenek ijesztő ruhákba, rakjanak magukra kecskeszarvakat, és
kereplőkkel, kürtökkel csapjanak minél nagyobb zajt, hogy
elijesszék a babonás törököket. A terv sikerült, és az ellenség
fegyverét hátrahagyva menekült el.
School Corner
Carnival time arrived again for this year in our Hungarian
school. We didn’t celebrate by getting dressed in costume but
instead made scary buso masks to scare the nasty winter
away. Rita Larsen explained who the busos are and why
they dress in animal fur with scary masks to carry on an old
tradition. We all prepared our own buso masks. Scissors
snapped, glue poured, yarn beards and bean warts were
stuck onto the masks. Some even taped on paper horns,
making them even more terrifying. Some used tissue paper,
others glued on cotton balls and feathers. Older kids prepared their own masks while the parents helped out the
younger ones. Half an hour later we had an abundance of
scary masks on the table. We subsequently continued with
our regular, albeit slightly shorter, Hungarian classes.
Fresh, traditional carnival donuts awaited the kids after
class. Everyone tucked in with aplomb; even a few parents
were caught licking their fingers! Our final games of the day
proved even more enjoyable than usual on a full stomach.
The kids excitedly played “pass the parcel,” looking for small
gifts, and the “broom dancing” was a hit too. Another unforgettable day at Hungarian school! Thank you to all involved!
Where does the folk tradition of Busójárás come from?
The first and most common explanation is the “winter burial,” or the farewell to winter. People dress up in scary costumes and masks with the hope that winter will be scared
and flee. Celebrating the death of winter is symbolized with
the burning of a straw man. Those dressed in costumes went
house to house shouting, tooting and ringing bells, also scattering ashes on front porches. This was intended to keep
away the evil spirits. The highpoint of the event was the
wrestling events between men in the main square, which
was the initiation to manhood.
The second story about Busójárás is that it was the result of
continuous attacks by Turks on Hungarians during the 16th17th century when Hungary was under Turkish rule. However, there was a part of the country that, according to the legend, the Turks could never occupy. It was known as the
Mohács Island, an area of marshland. The local residents
retreated here when the Turks attacked, with the Turks
eventually finding a path to the Island to continue their attack against the local folks. The leader of the locals came up
with the idea that, as they didn’t have any weapons, they
should dress in robes with goat horns, making lots of noise
with rattles and trumpets to scare the superstitious Turks
away. The plan was successful, and the enemy fled, leaving
their weapons behind.

Final Cut - Hölgyeim és Uraim
Minden évben nagy érdeklődéssel várjuk, hogy milyen magyar
film kerül a Seattle-i Nemzetközi Filmfesztivál műsorába. Idén
Pálfi György "Final Cut - Hölgyeim és Uraim" c. filmjét vetítették egy héten át az Uptown filmszínházban.
Hétköznapi történet, bravúros feldolgozásban. Pálfi György egy szerelmi sztorit mesél el egy mintegy 450 jól ismert alkotásból összeollózott montázsfilmben. Ismert filmekből választott közel 1200 snittet,
ez adta a film játékosságát és ettől volt olyan gyorsan pergő és humoros is. Láthattunk részleteket a Casablancától
a Hyppolit, a lakájon át az Avatárig, képviselve voltak az akció-, western-, kaland-, történelmi- és rajzfilmek, a "főszereplő"
férfit többek között Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Anthony Perkins, Charlie Chaplin, Keanu Reeves és Latinovits Zoltán
játszotta, a női főszerepet pedig Gina Lollobrigida, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Phieffer, és Törőcsik Mari "kapta", csak hogy
néhány nevet említsünk a több száz női és férfi főszereplőt megszemélyesítő színésznagyság közül. Egészen rövid, pár szavas
párbeszédek kaptak helyet a filmben eredeti nyelven (angol felirattal), ettől is még nemzetközibbé vált a film, bárhol, bármikor játszódhat ez az univerzális szerelmi történet. A vetítés előtti felvezetőből megtudhattuk azt is, hogy a vágómunka majdnem három éven át tartott, azonban mivel a felhasznált alkotások jogait nem szerezték meg, csak fesztiválos és ingyenes vetítésekre lesz csak lehetőség.

Konzuli hírek
Kedves Barátaim!
Megvolt a kihelyezett konzuli nap 2014. február 22-én, vagyis
eljöttek Los Angelesből Teleki Szilárd konzul és Mező Borbála
konzuli asszisztens a biometrikus géppel. Megint sokan voltak
itt ügyeket intézni, és hét eskütételre is sor került. Ketten jöttek Ellensburgből és öten Oregonból. Mint mindig, most is
minden nagyon jól ment. Sok mindent sikerült megoldanunk.
Az állampolgársági esküt tevők mindjárt útlevélért is folyamodtak.
Kérjük mindazokat, akik jogosultak rá, vagyis van magyar azonosító számuk, lakcímkártyájuk, vagy érvényes magyar útlevelük, hogy iratkozzanak fel a magyarországi szavazók nyilvántartásba vételére. Interneten is lehet regisztrálni. A névjegyzékbe vételi nyomtatványt 2013. november 1-jétől a
www.nvi.hu honlapon lehet megtalálni. A magyar és az EU
választásokon való részvétellel kapcsolatban további információ a http://washington.kormany.hu/tajekoztato-a-nevjegyzekbe-veteli-eljarasrol és a http://www.valasztas.hu honlapokon
érhető el. Az első a követség honlapján van, a második a magyarországi honlapon. Én feliratkoztam, már megkaptam az
értesítést, hogy felvettek a nyilvántartásba, és ezt sokan mások is megtették. Egészen pontosan azt kell írni, ami a magyar okmányokban van, különben visszautasíthatják. Azonnal újra lehet kérni. Csak azt követően szavazhatunk, hogy a
Nemzeti Választási Iroda felvesz a névjegyzékbe. A WMASz
honlapján, a konzuli oldalon megtalálhatók a szabályok és
linkek.
A szavazás Magyarországon április 6-án lesz, Amerikában pedig 5-én. A névjegyzékbe vételi kérelemnek legkésőbb a szavazás napját megelőző 15. napig kell beérkeznie a Nemzeti
Választási Irodához, vagyis március 22 előtt. A szavazólapokat hamarosan meg kell kapnunk és legkésőbb március 29ig vissza kell küldeni, hogy idejében megérkezzenek. Ezért jó a
szavazólapot, amint megkapták, rögtön kitölteni és visszaküldeni. Ne hagyják az utolsó pillanatra! A végleg itt tartózkodó
magyar állampolgárok postán szavazhatnak. Akik ideiglenesen tartózkodnak itt, azok csak Los Angelesben szavazhatnak.

A Magyar Diaszpóra Tanács III. ülése zárónyilatkozatában
elfogadta a Mikes Kelemen programot, amelynek célja,
hogy a diaszpóra tárgyi örökségét rendezett módon összegyűjtve
Magyarországra szállítsa, és gondoskodjon későbbi méltó felhasználásáról. A program a Közigazgatási és Igazságügyi Minisztérium Nemzetpolitikáért Felelős Államtitkársága és az
Országos Széchényi Könyvtár összefogásával indul útjára.
Raktáraik 2014. január 1. és 2014. június 30. között várják a
már nem használt magyar vonatkozású könyveket, dokumentumokat, hagyatékokat. Ezt követően ezeket elszállítják Magyarországra, ahol az Országos Széchényi Könyvtár veszi gondozásba őket. Az adományokat elsősorban a Kárpát-medencei
könyvtárakban és iskolákban fogják elhelyezni, illetve olyan
közgyűjteményekben, ahol már eddig is jelentős emigráns
gyűjteménnyel rendelkeztek. Raktáraik az alábbi városokban

Dear Friends,
We had the remote consular day on February 22nd, 2014. Szilárd Teleki, consul, and Borbála Mező, consular assistant,
came from Los Angeles with the biometric machine. Again
many people attended. We took care of a lot of cases and we
even had seven new citizens taking the oath. Two came from
Ellensburg and five from Oregon. Everything went very well.
We managed to accomodate everyone. The oath takers also
applied for passports.
We ask all those who have the right, namely those who have a
Hungarian ID number, an address card or a valid Hungarian
passport, to register for the Hungarian elections. You can
apply through the Internet. The forms have been available
since November 1st, 2013 at: www.nvi.hu.
For more information about participating in the Hungarian
and European Union elections, visit the following websites:

the Embassy’s website in DC; the second is the Hungarian
website. I already registered and received the confirmation
letter, and so did many others. You have to use the exact data
as in your Hungarian documents, or your registration will be
rejected. You can ask for it again immediately. You can only
vote after having registered with the National Election Office
and your eligibility has been confirmed by them.
You can also find rules and links at the website of the HAAW
on the consular page. Elections will be held in Hungary on
April 6th, in the USA on April 5th. Application for registration
has to be received by the National Election Office before the
15th day prior to the date of the elections, namely before
March 22nd. We should receive the ballots soon, and they will
have to be returned before March 29th in order to arrive on
time. Therefore it is good to complete and immediately mail
back the ballot as soon as you get it. Do not leave it to the last
minute! Hungarians registered as permanently living in
the USA can vote by mail. Those who are registered
here on a temporary basis will have to go to Los Angeles from WA State.
There are so many opportunities for learning the Hungarian
language and getting to know Hungarian culture during the
summer, it is worth exploring now. Naturally, the first is our
own Ti-Ti-Tábor.

young people of Hungarian descent for traveling to Hungary
and studying there for two weeks, while enjoying the

Sík Sándor Cserkészpark: Scout Camp in Fillmore, NY

2014, July. This camp is for children 8 through 14 years of
age who are of Hungarian origin and speak Hungarian. The
goal is to enrich their language skills. In the two-week camp
there are 50 hours of classes and Hungarian activities, and in
the afternoon study groups, excursions and swimming. The

The Mikes Kelemen program was accepted at the
Hungarian Diaspora Council’s third meeting in their closing
statement. Its goal is to gather the diaspora’s heritage objects
in an organized manner and ship them to Hungary, then
make certain to take care of their distribution to where they
will do the most good. This program was started by the Office
of the State Secretary responsible for National Policy of the
Ministry of Administration and Justice and the National
Széchényi Library. Their storage facilities await your
unneeded books written in Hungarian or dealing with Hungary, as well as documents and estates. The organization will
transport the collected materials to Hungary, where the National Széchényi Library will take care of them. The
donations will go first to those libraries, schools or public
collections in the Carpathian Basin that have already
substantial emigrant material. The donation storage
facilities located in the USA are in Los Angeles, Chicago and

Szép magyar neve van Szabados Klára Emőke Viktóriának, mégis
az első kérdésem az volt, hogy igazából „milyen nemzetiségűnek
vallod magad?” A tudakolódásom háttere az, hogy Klarissza
(ahogy itt, Amerikában hívják), Olaszországban nőtt fel, olasz volt
az első nyelve, ahonnan 15 évesen az Egyesült Államokba vándorolt az édesanyjával, ahol bekapcsolódott az amerikai magyar közösségbe.
Clarrisa már jó 54 éve itt tanul és dolgozik, az angol nyelvet
használva. Három nagyon különböző nyelv és kultúra tette és
teszi rá a bélyegét az életére. „ Minél idősebb leszek, annál
inkább magyarnak érzem magam, és a magaménak tartom a
magyar nyelvet és kultúrát, érdeklődöm a jelen eseményei és
a magyar hagyományok iránt. „Klarissza 1945-ben született,
miközben a szülei Magyarországról Olaszországba menekülőben voltak. Orvos édesapját kommunista ellenes írásai miatt a kommunisták felelősségre akarták vonni, így annak ellenére, hogy az édesanyja a terhessége utolsó heteiben volt, nekivágtak az útnak. Észak-Olaszországban, Trenrino-Alto Adige környékén, Rovereto város közelében telepedtek le. Klarissza az olaszt tartja az anyanyelvének. Két bátyja van,
mindkettő itt, Seattle környékén él. Mindössze 10 éves volt,
mikor elvesztette az édesapját, és 1959-ben édesanyjával ketten országot változtattak, és bevándoroltak az USA
-ba. „Olaszország nem fogadott be bennünket
állampolgárként, az USA viszont igen. Valahová
tartozni akartunk.” 1959-ben az amerikaiak még
mindig szimpatizáltak a magyarokkal az 1956-os forradalom utóhatásaként.
A szponzorjuk Wisconsinba hozta őket, ahonnan 23 hónap múlva New Yorkba költöztek. Itt Klariszsza bekapcsolódott a magyar cserkész mozgalomba, és aktív tagja lett az élénk magyar közösségnek. A cserkészet hatására ismerte meg alaposabban a magyar kultúrát; nem csak a nyelvet, de a
zenét és a népitáncot is. Középiskolai érettségije
után dolgozni kezdett, miközben esti tanfolyamon a City College of New York-ban folytatta tanulmányait szépművészeti és
dráma szakon. Két év múlva, mikor a bátyja is átköltözött
Olaszországból az USA-ba, és állást kapott a McGraw Hill
könyvkiadónál St Louise-ban, Klarissza visszament a nappali
szakra a Washington University diákjaként, ahol művészettörténetet tanult. Az egyetem után egy évig tanított, közben
érdeklődése a fémszobrászat, ékszerkészítés, ötvösmunka felé
fordult. Felvételt nyert a neves, michigani Cranbrook
Academy of Arts-ba, ahol szépművészeti szakon Master vizsgát tett és diplomát szerzett 1971-ben. A fémek közül ezüsttel
és annak ötvözeteivel dolgozott, de kerámiát is alkalmazott a
fémmel kombinálva. Új diplomájával a kezében, Seattle-be
költözött. Maga választotta a Pacific Northwestet új lakóhelyéül; egy „Síeljünk a Tengerhez” versenyt látott a TV-ben és
ide vonzotta a víz, a hegyek, és a környezet, ami a Dolomitok
vidékén levő első otthonára emlékeztette.
„Miből éltél meg, mikor Seattle-be költöztél?”- kérdeztem tőle.
„Ékszer készítést tanítottam a Lakeside iskolában és a Highline Community College-ben, pincérkedtem és olaszt tanítottam a Language School nevű nyelviskolában. Mindez lehetőséget adott nekem arra, hogy a színház és zene iránti szenve-
délyemnek is áldozzak, és az ötvösmunkát is folytathassam.
Később a nyelviskolai pozíció főállássá alakult, és engem neveztek ki a bellevue-i fiók menedzserévé.” Itt ismerkedett meg
férjével, Charles Mish-sel, aki olaszul akart tanulni. „Az olasz
tanítása mindig kézenfekvő volt nekem, akkor is mikor egyéb
területeken próbáltam érvényesülni. Jelenleg is tanítok
olaszt.”
Erős oldalának tartja a finom, aprólékos munkát, ihletét
Claude Monet-től és Monet Giverny kertjéből merítve. Mint a
múzsája, Klarissza is lelkes kertész. Ezt a szenvedélyét férjével is megosztja. Itt, a Queen Ann dombon, 1927-ben épült bájos otthonuk kertjében, vagy a Lopez szigeti nyaralójuk kertjében tervezi meg művészeti törekvéseinek az alkotó elemeit
és méreteit, legyen az házépítés, konyhájuk átépítése vagy
egy másik érdeklődési köre, a fényképezés. Az üres tér és a
szilárd anyagok kapcsolata és viszonya foglalkoztatja
a fantáziáját.
1985-ben ismerkedett meg férjével, Charles-lal, aki
lengyel származású. Öt évvel később esküdtek csak
meg, mert mint mondta „Biztosak akartunk lenni abban, hogy jó ötlet az, ha összeházasodásunk.” A férje
8 és 10 éves fiacskái részidőben velük laktak. Szintén
1985-ben elhagyta a Language School-t, és bekapcsolódott a természetvédelem és hulladék csökkentésének munkájába. Utóbbi témáról egy színpadi művet
is írt iskolás gyerekek részére, amit színpadra is vitt
több Seattle-i iskolában. Ösztöndíjat is kapott Seattle
városától és Washington államtól, hogy tanító/ismeretterjesztő anyagot dolgozzon ki az alsó és felső tagozatos diákok (junior high) részére. Ez a munka egy pozícióhoz vezetett
a Seattle város hulladék kezelési osztályán. Ő tervezte meg és
indította el Bellevue város hulladék kezelési programját is, ahol 3 évig dolgozott. Innen ismét új állás nyílt meg előtte: a
University of Washington is megbízta az egyetem hulladék
gyűjtési programjának a megtervezésével és annak vezetésével. „Messzire kanyarodtál az ötvös munkásságod és a szépművészeti diplomád napjaitól”, jegyeztem meg. „Igen, de továbbra is időt áldoztam a zene, a tánc és a színház iránti szenvedélyemre”, válaszolta. „Én a kezdet kezdetén, a ’80-as években
kapcsolódtam be a Seattle-i hulladék-csökkentés és gyűjtési
mozgalomba; a kezdeti kreatív folyamat nyerte meg a tetszésemet, azon kívül az, hogy ez a munka nagyon fontos volt és
ma is fontos a környezetvédelem szempontjából. Mikor a tervet kialakítottuk, új energia vált szükségessé ahhoz, hogy valaki továbbvigye. Jelenleg a zenére szeretnék több időt fordítani; zongorázom és gyakorolok, legalább másfél órát
naponta.

A lovely Hungarian name, Clarissa Emőke Viktória Szabados, especially if we
use the original Hungarian version of Clarissa, which is Klára. Yet my first
question to her was regarding her nationality: “What do you consider yourself?”
The reason for my question is that Clarissa grew up in Italy and her first
language was Italian. Then at age 15 she and her mother moved to the US,
where she immersed herself in the American Hungarian community.
Clarissa has been living in the US for a
good 54 years, where she studied and
worked using the English language.
She has three very distinct languages
and cultural influences in her life.“The
older I get the more definitely I identify with
my Hungarian-ness, the Hungarian language, the current events of Hungary and
my cultural heritage,” she said. Clarissa
was born in 1945 while her parents
were fleeing Hungary. Her father, a doctor who had written
anti-Communist articles, was being sought by the Communists, and even though her mother was in the last weeks of
her pregnancy, they set out to find refuge in Italy. They made
their home in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Northern Italy, in the vicinity of the city of Rovereto. Clarissa considers
Italian her mother tongue. She has two older brothers, both residing in the Seattle area. She lost her
father when she was only 10 years old, so in 1959 it
was only she and her mom who came to the US.
“Italy did not give us citizenship and the US did. We
wanted to belong somewhere,” Clarissa said. In
1959 Americans still strongly sympathized with
Hungarians due to the Hungarian Revolution of
1956. Their sponsors brought them to Wisconsin.
From there, a couple of months later they moved to New York.
Here she joined the Hungarian scouting movement and was
an active member of a lively Hungarian community. It was
through the scouts that she really embraced the Hungarian
culture, not only through the language but also the music and
folk dancing. After high school graduation Clarissa started to
work, and in the evening she attended City College of New
York, taking classes in fine art as well as the performing arts.
Two years later, when her brother joined them from Italy and
received a position at McGraw-Hill Publishing Company in St
Louis, Clarissa went back to college full time to study art history at Washington University. She taught school for a year
as her interest in the arts of metal smithing, jewelry making,
designing and metal sculpting surfaced. She was accepted at
the famous Cranbrook Academy of Arts (Michigan), where
she earned a master’s degree in fine art in 1971. She worked
with silver and its alloys but also combined metal with ceramic in many of her pieces. With her new diploma, she moved to
Seattle. It was by choice that she picked the Pacific Northwest as residence; she saw a “Ski to Sea” race on TV and was
attracted by the water, the mountains and the outdoors reminiscent of her first home in the Dolomites.
“How did you make a living when you moved to Seattle”? I
asked. “I taught jewelry making at Lakeside School and at
Highline Community College, and I waited on tables and
taught Italian at The Language School. This gave me time to
pursue theatre and music, as well as my own work in metal.
Later the position at The Language School became full time
and I became the office manager of its Bellevue branch.”
This is where she met her husband, Charles Mish, who came
to study Italian. “Teaching Italian was something that I could
always fall back on, and I taught it even while pursuing other
careers. I still teach.” She sees her strength in fine, detailed
works, receiving her inspirations from Claude Monet and his
garden in Giverny. Like her muse, Clarissa is also an avid
gardener. She shares this passion with her husband. It is in
the gardens of their charming 1927 Queen Ann home or in
their island refuge on Lopez that she works out the elements
and scale of her artistic endeavors, whether in building a
house, remodeling their kitchen or pursuing another of her
interests, photography. The relation of empty space
and solid matter intrigues her. It was in 1985 that
she and Charles, who is Polish by heritage, met.
They got married five years later. “We wanted to
make sure that it was a good idea to do that.” Her
husband’s 8- and 10-year-old sons were living with
them part of the time. Also in ’85 she left The Language School and became more involved in the promotion of environmental education and waste reduction. She wrote a musical play about recycling for elementary school children that she helped stage in many of the
Seattle public schools. She received grants from the City of
Seattle and the State of Washington to create educational
material for elementary and junior high school children. This
work resulted in a job with the City of Seattle’s solid waste
management. She set in motion the recycling program for
the City of Bellevue, where she worked for about three years.
One thing led to another, and the University of Washington
also hired her to develop and manage the campus recycling
program.
“You’ve gone on a long journey from your metal smithing days
and your fine art diploma”, I remarked to her. “Yes, but I continued to devote time to my passions of music, dancing and
theatre,” she said. “I became involved in waste reduction and
recycling in Seattle at its beginning, in the early 80s; it was
the creative process that attracted me and also, of course, because it was very important for the environment. Once established and mainstream, another energy is needed to carry
it forward. Now I want to devote more time to music; I play
the piano and practice at least an hour and a half each day. I
want to be able to play Chopin so Chopin’s music comes
through me. It’s the same

minden művészeti formában: a művész csak eszköz a mű
kifejezéséhez. „Mindez szorgalmat és kitartást igényel.
És mint mondta, egy titkárnőre lenne szüksége, aki elintézne bizonyos rutin feladatokat, például a weboldalának a
rendben tartását és a fotóinak a webre való feltételét.
„Mi a maradandó emlékem, amit majd magam után hagyok?”
– tette fel a kérdést önmagának. „Egy keleti partvidéki templomban van egy kehely és tál, amit én terveztem és készítettem a részükre. Írtam egy kis könyvecskét, Italian for Travelers címmel, amit munkafüzetként és nyelvtankönyvként
használok a tanítványaimmal. De látod, azt már nem intéztem el, hogy a szerzői jogot beszerezzem rá. A diákjaimat is
örökségemnek tekintem; remélem, hogy továbbviszik a nyelv
és a kultúra szeretetét, amit együtt fedezünk fel. Minden évben próbálok egy olaszországi tanító túrát vezetni részükre.
Remélem, hogy az otthonunk és kertjeink is maradandó hagyatékok lesznek. Fontosnak tartom az élet múlandóságát kifejezni, érzékeltetni a kötött, rögzített anyagi dolgokkal ellentétben. Ilyen értelemben a kert is az átmenetit, az anyag állandó változását képviseli, ugyanúgy, mint maga az élet”.
„Sok minden érdekel téged. Mégis, mi a kedvenc hobbid”?
„Mi az, hogy hobbi? Az egész életem egy hobbi. A tanítás élvezet, öröm, tulajdonképpen olyan, mint a színház; nagyon kielégítő figyelni azt, ahogy valaki elsajátít egy nyelvet, és hasonló ahhoz is, ahogy egy kert növekszik. Mondhatnám azt is,
hogy… élményeket gyűjtök”, összegezte egy mosollyal.
Klarissza öt éve lépett be a Seattle-Pécs Testvérváros Szövetségbe, és három éve átvette az elnökséget a Kramár Máriától. Sok kedves barátot szerzett, és maradandó barátságokat
alakított ki ezen a szervezeten belül, melynek a fő célja a Seattle
és Pécs városok közti kulturális és tanulmányi csere. Klariszsza az elmúlt öt évben négyszer látogatott Pécsre. 2009-ben
egy emlékezetes delegáció tagjaként, a pécsi Székesegyház
ezer éves évfordulója alkalmával, Seattle érseke, Alex
Burnett, és a St James Katedrális vezető orgonistája, Joseph
Adam társaságában képviselték Seattle-t testvérvárosunkban, Pécsett.
A múlt hónapban a SPSC tagjai egyhangúan újraválasztották
Klarisszát az elnöki tisztségre. Ebben a fontos szerepben reprezentálja közösségünket Pécsett és Seattle-ben, amihez további sok sikert kívánunk neki!

process in all art forms; the artist is the vehicle for the art.”
That requires diligence and persistence. And as she said, she
would need a secretary to help her take care of some of her
tasks—for instance, keeping her website updated and posting
her photographs.
What is her lasting mark on this world? To that question she
answered, “A church back east has a silver chalice and plate
that I designed and made for them. I also wrote a manual, a
small book titled “Italian for Travelers,” and the Italian grammar and workbook that I use with my students. But you see, I
never bothered with copywriting it. I also consider my students my legacy; I hope that they will pass on the love for the
language and the culture that we explore together. I try to
make an educational tour with them to Italy every year. Our
home and gardens will hopefully also remain our lasting legacies. It is important to express the ephemeral aspects of life
and not its fixed materialness so much. In that sense a garden
represents the transitional, ever-changing manifestation of
matter, just as life itself does.”
“You have many interests. What would you say is your favorite
hobby?” “What is a hobby? My life is a hobby. Teaching is a
joy, a pleasure, a sort of theatre, really; it’s very satisfying to
experience someone’s growth in a language, and not too different from experiencing the growth of a garden. I could say that
I collect . . . experiences,” she said with a smile.
Clarissa joined the Seattle-Pécs Sister City Association five
years ago and took on the presidency three years ago from former president Maria Kramar. She has made many good
friends through this organization whose main purpose is cultural and educational exchange between the cities of Seattle
and Pécs. Clarissa traveled to Hungary four times in the last
five years, including a very memorable trip in 2009 for the
millennial celebration of Pécs’s Cathedral. The Seattle delegation included Archbishop Burnett of Seattle and Joseph Adam, chief organist of Seattle’s St. James Cathedral.
Just recently, the members of the SPSCA unanimously
reelected Clarissa for another term as president; we all wish

Élményeim és benyomásaim a terembe lépve, ahol több,
mint harmincan vártuk, hogy találkozhassunk ismét egy
irodalmi délutánon:
Előadónk ott állt a kandalló előtt, barátságosan beszélgetve
egy kis embercsoport közepén. A kinti napsütés fényjátékai
a terem falain, a várakozók kíváncsi tekintete, és a fel-fel
hangzó jóízű nevetés már megalapozták a nyílt és barátságos befogadó légkört az elkövetkezendőkre.
Elkezdődött.
About the Literary Night
These were my impressions and feelings as I entered the
room where more than thirty of us were looking forward to
spending another literary afternoon together:
Our presenter stood in front of the fireplace, immersed in
friendly conversatin in the middle of a small group. The light
play of the sunsine on the walls of the room, the curious and
expectant expression on the faces of those present, and the
laughing between conversation had already set the tone of an
open, friendly atmosphere.
The presentation began.
Mosoly az arcokon, mosoly a lelkekben. Kíváncsiság az arcokon, tudásszomj az elmékben. Emlékezés és emlékek kutatása egy délutánon át. Gyermeki rácsodálkozás és elcsodálkozás. Ítélkezés, mérlegelés, felmentés. Katarzis-élmény.
Az előadó szavai nyomán sziporkáznak elméinkben a friss
és már nem friss ismeretek, élmények, tapasztalatok. Óráról-órára épül és épül az ismereteink vára, mely egyre színesebb, egyre szebb, egyre élvezetesebb, mint ahogy Claude
Monet Roueni katedrálisának kapuzata emelkedik a napfényben.
Nehéz, fekete, évszázados ítéletek alól emelkednek fel ők:
a NŐK, a Hitvesek. Hitves, ki SOHASEM dobta el az özvegyi fátyolt, bár megbélyegezték és elítélték a soha el nem
követett „bűne” miatt. Hitves, aki nélkül vagy meg sem született volna, vagy nem így hangzana Madách Az ember tragédiája, ami ma is kötelező olvasmány sok-sok országban meglepő, de még Izraelben is. Ahogyan Monet képein izzik fel a
fény az apró ecsetvonások nyomán, úgy fényesednek ki
Szendrey Júlia és Fráter Erzsébet fekete glóriái a mi nagyszerű tanárunk, előadónk , Dr. Hegyváry Csaba által elmondott új ismereteink nyomán.
Köszönet ezért a délutánért IS. Köszönet ezekért az
önzetlenül átadott ismeretekért.
Egy különös érzés-egyveleg kerít hatalmába ezen a délutánon míg hallgatom őt. Lelkemben kavarognak még órák
múlva is az örömteli, meghatódott és hálával teli érzések.
Szinte sajnálom, hogy rohan az idő. Haragszom az időre,
mert maradnék még, hallgatnám még, kivel mi és hogy történt? Hogyan éltek? Vajon hogyan élhettek volna, ha a hősnőink számára lett volna választás?
„Az elátkozott múzsák” járnak a fejemben.
De jó is, hogy „felmenthettük” őket, legalább mi, maroknyi embercsoport! De jó érzés is, hogy többet megtudhattunk róluk!
Gondolatban többször „elszégyellem magam” az előadás során: „Ó, ezt nem tudtam! „Ó, ezt elfelejtettem!” vagy „Lám,
csak féligazságot tudtam!”
Ezen a délutánon magamban többször is hálát adok a magyar oktatásügynek (1967-től), hogy szerencsémre JÓ földrajzi helyen,

Smiles on our faces and in our souls. Curiousity abounding,
with a willingness to learn. Remembrance and searching for
memories throughout an afternoon. Childish wonderment ...
judgement, weighing of the information, .... cathartic
experience.
Following the presenter’s words, our minds sparkle with old
and new information, impressions and experiences. Over the
span of two hours the colorful castle of our knowledge is built,
expanded and painted even more colorful, more magical like
the portal of the Rouen Cathedral by Monet standing in the
sparkling sunshine.
The women, muses, and spouses are freed from under the
weight of centuries-old dark, heavy prejudice.
The spouse who NEVER „threw away the widow’s weil”,
despite being judged for this never actually committed „sin”.
Without the spouse the „Tragedy of Man” by Madach would
not have been born or would not be the same. The Tragedy
that it still is recommended school reading in many coutries,
surprisingly even in Israel. Just how the sun sparkles up on
the small brush strokes of the Monet paintings, the images of
Julia Szendrey and Erzsebet Frater became more colorful,
bright and nuanced through the tales of our wonderful
presenter and teacher, Dr. Csaba Hegyvary.
Our heartfelt thank yous to him for this wonderful afternoon
for his unselfishly shared knowledge. I was seized by a
strange mix of emotions while listening to Him. Hours after
the conclusion of the presentation my soul is still posessed by
joy, ...and gratefulness. I almost regret the passing time...
I hate time, because I’d like to stay longer and continue to
listen to the stories. what happend to whom and how? How
did they live? And... how could they have lived,...if the female
protagonists had choices?...
„The damned muses”...keeps crossing my mind...
It’s great that we could excuse them, at least this small group
in the audience. It feels so good to know more about them!
During the presentation I feel sometimes „embarresed”: „Ah,
I did not know this! „Ah, how could I forget that?”...or....”I
knew only a half-truth!”
This afternoon I think gratefully about the Hungarian school
system (starting from1967...),

OKOS személyek nyitották ki annak idején a „tudás varázsdobozát” előttem, így volt mire építenem az elhangzottakat.
Felsejlik előttem magyar tanáraim arcának sora, általános iskolától az egyetemeken át MINDEN olyan emberé, akik arra
tereltek, hogy olvassunk, tájékozódjunk. Imádtam tanulni, imádtam új ismereteket hallani.
A mai szombat délutánon megérintett a régi idők hangulata...
Ittam a szavait a könnyed eleganciával beszélő Dr. Hegyváry Csabának, aki újabb kaput nyitott meg előttünk, és mi besétálhattunk vele egy „tárlatvezetésre”, ahol felfénylettek az
igazságok.
Köszönet a Szervezőknek, köszönet az Előadónak, köszönet
a Sorsnak, hogy megélhettem ezeket az érzéseket.

because I was in a GOOD place, where SMART people
opened the „magic box of knowledge” for me...I had a good
base to build on with the information received at this
presentation...I recall the faces of my Hungarian language
and literature teachers, from grade school to the university.
And ALL the faces of those who guided us to read, to be
informed. I adored studies, adored listening to new
information.
This Saturday afternoon I am touched by the mood of those
old times...
I was hanging on the words of Dr. Csaba Hegyvary, spoken
with easy elegance, who opened new doors for us. And we
walked through these doors, to be lead around an „exhibit’
of new, shiny truths.
Thank you to the Organizers, thank you to the
Presenter and thank you to Fate for allowing me to
live and relive these emotions.

Köszönjük szépen Marjorie Nugentnek és Pat McMonaglenak, hogy vendéglátói voltak a februári táncháznak a csodálatos Seattle-i otthonukban! Az első órában Mario és Sue Isely
székely táncot tanítottak. Ezután az este táncolással, énekléssel, beszélgetéssel és evéssel telt el. A sok finom harapnivaló,
amit a jelenlevők hoztak kitűnő volt. Záborszki András egy
lábas gulyást is hozott különleges csemegének! A zene rendkívüli volt! A Forrás zenekar nagyszerűen muzsikál és olyan
könnyű rá táncolni! Gondolom, hogy a képeken jól látszik:
mindenki remekül mulatott.
Még két táncházunk lesz: az egyik május 3-án az All Saints

followed by an evening of energetic dancing, singing,
visiting, and eating! The snacks everyone brought were
delicious and András Zaborski brought a pot of gulyás as
a special treat! The music was awesome. Forrás
Hungarian Folk Band has a great sound and is so easy
to dance to! I think you can see by the pictures that
everyone was having a good time.
We have two more táncház parties coming up: One on
May 3rd at the All Saints Center on Raft Island and one
on May 24th at the Seattle Center House.

Energiagazdálkodás
A kormány benyújtotta az Országgyűlésnek a paksi erőmű bővítését tartalmazó törvényjavaslatot. A Magyarország kormánya és az Oroszországi Föderáció kormánya közötti nukleáris energia békés célú felhasználása terén folytatandó együttműködésről szóló egyezmény biztosítja, hogy a paksi atomerőmű magyar állami tulajdonban marad. Az orosz fél külön
államközi szerződés keretében állami hitelt biztosít a magyar
fél számára. A beruházás, amely a rendszerváltoztatás óta eltelt időszak legjelentősebb infrastrukturális fejlesztése, egyebek között magában foglalja két új, 5.-6. blokk tervezését, megépítését, üzembe helyezését. A javaslat szerint Magyarország
energetikai szempontból sebezhető, mert fosszilis energiahordozók importjából fedezi energiaszükségletének jelentős részét. Az adatok szerint több évtizede a paksi atomerőműben
termelt villamos energia a legolcsóbb.
Sport
Magyarországot 16 sportoló képviselte a szocsi téli olimpián.
A megnyitó ünnepségen egy rövidpályás gyorskorcsolyázó,
Heidum Bernadett vitte a magyar zászlót, míg a záró ünnepségen Lajtos Szandrára esett a választás. A 27 éves rövidpályás gyorskorcsolyázó elmondta, a csapatvezetés azzal indokolta a döntést, hogy mindenképpen a pontszerző, hatodik helyen zárt női váltó öt tagjából szerettek volna választani, a csapatban pedig ő a rangidős. A szegedi sportoló harmadszor szerepelt ötkarikás játékokon, a 2002-es Salt Lake City-i olimpián 500 és 1000 méteren indult, míg négy éve Vancouverben a
váltó tartalékja volt.
Magyarság
Budapesten 18. alkalommal került megrendezésre a Csángó
bál. A közönséget a bejáratnál vendégváró pálinkával és kaláccsal kínálták, zenével, tánccal fogadták. A színpadon a lakodalmas hagyományokat jól ismerő gyimesi és moldvai idős
hagyományőrzők, fiatalok és gyerekek mutatták be a csángók
szokásait. A színpadi műsort idén is több helyszínen zajló táncház, koncertek, énektanítás és más programok követték. A Csángó bál szervezői a moldvai magyarság létét alapjaiban fenyegető kedvezőtlen társadalmi és gazdasági folyamatokra kívánják felhívni a közvélemény figyelmét, és igyekeznek támogatókat nyerni a csángó magyarság megmaradását, illetve felemelkedését célzó erőfeszítésekhez. A bál fővédnöke Áder János köztársasági elnök volt.
Festészet
Tárlatvezetésekkel és előadással emlékeztek a 170 évvel ezelőtt született Munkácsy Mihály (1844-1900) világhírű magyar
festőművészre a Magyar Nemzeti Galériában Budapesten. Első fontos képe az Ásító inas, amely gazdag lélekrajzával, világítási kontrasztjaival jelezte a művész fejlődésének irányát. A
világsikert meghozó Siralomház 1869-ben született, ezt követték más realista, népies képei: a Részeges férj hazatérése, a Tépéscsinálók, az Éjjeli csavargók, a Búcsúzkodás, a Köpülő aszszony és a Zálogház. Párizsba költözése és Marches báró özvegyével kötött házassága után elfordult a kritikai realizmustól

és az eklektika felé vonzódott. Milton című festménye a párizsi világkiállítás nagy aranyérmét nyerte el, ezután születtek
nagy vallásos témájú vásznai: a Krisztus Pilátus előtt és a
Golgota. Jézus-trilógiájának befejező darabját, az Ecce homo-t
1895-ben festette.
Műemlékvédelem
Felújítják Csesznek várát, amely az 1241-42-es tatárjárás utáni nagy várépítési korszakban épült. Az első várat Cseszneki
Jakab királyi kardhordozó emeltette 1263 körül, egy védelemre kiválóan alkalmas sziklacsúcson. Az évszázadok alatt fontos katonai bázis volt, majd a háborús idők elmúltával a vár
szerepe megváltozott, a zord kővárat az Esterházy-grófok egy
kényelmes lakhatást biztosító barokk kastéllyá alakították át.
Korabeli források szerint 1780-ban elköltözött a főúri család,
de még szolgaszemélyzet használta a helyiségeket, amelyeket
egy harminc esztendővel későbbi földrengés, majd tűzvész tett
végképp lakhatatlanná.
Gasztronómia
Valentin-napi hallakoma, élőhal bemutató, élményhorgászat,
halászléfőző verseny, több száz magyar és nemzetközi halétel,
valamint csaknem 50 halfaj bemutatásával várták a látogatókat a 2. Budapesti Halfesztivál szervezői. Az esemény nem csak
gasztronómiai élményt nyújtott a látogatóknak; Magyarország
halfajtáit kiállítás keretében mutattak be, és Herman Ottó emlékére is rendeztek programot. Az idén 100 éve elhunyt tudósról, néprajzkutatóról, polihisztorról országszerte több száz eseményen emlékeznek meg az emlékévben. Ehhez kapcsolódik a
Halfesztivál is, hiszen Herman Ottó nemcsak a múzeum munkatársaként dolgozott hosszú éveken keresztül, hanem kiemelkedően sokat tett a magyar halászat és a magyarországi halfajok
megismeréséért és elismertetéséért is.
Oktatás
Szeptembertől még több gyermek ismerkedhet meg a lovaskultúrával: a tervek szerint idén ősszel az általános iskolák harmadik, negyedik és ötödik osztályában indulhat el a lovasoktatás
központi költségvetési forrásból. A nemzeti lovaskultúra-oktatás főbb célkitűzései között a lovaskultúra, a magyar lovas hagyományok, a lovaglás gyakorlati alapjainak megismertetése, valamint a környezettudatos és egészséges életmódra történő nevelés szerepel. A tantárgy a tanulók számára választható lesz.
Film
A kivándorlás generációs probléma, a fiatal nemzedék egésze szembesül a maradni vagy elmenni kérdésével - nyilatkozta Ferge Roland filmrendező, akinek El című munkája elismerő oklevelet kapott a most véget ért 64. Berlini Nemzetközi Filmfesztiválon, a Berlinalén. Ferge Roland szerint a külföldi tanulás és munkavállalás
egyre fiatalabb korban felmerülő életstratégia. A kivándorlás már
a középiskolásokat is foglalkoztatja. „Elgondolkodtató egy 15-16
évestől hallani, hogy azért jár spanyol különórára, mert jó nyelvtudással el tud helyezkedni Latin-Amerikában” - mondta a rendező
arról, hogy miért a fiatalok elvándorlásának témáját dolgozta fel.

Energy
The government submitted to the Parliament a proposal for the
expansion of the nuclear generator at Paks. The agreement between the governments of Hungary and that of the Russian Federation is about collaboration in regard to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and it guarantees that the nuclear generator in Paks
will continue to remain Hungarian government property. According to an agreement penned in a separate intergovernmental agreement, the Russians will extend a government loan to the Hungarians. This investment will be the most important infrastructure
development in Hungary since the change in political system. It
will mean, among other things, the planning, construction and
start-up of two new 5.-6. blocks. According to the proposal document, Hungary is currently energetically vulnerable, since it covers its need for energy mainly from import of fossil fuel. According
to data, the cheapest source of energy for decades has been the
electricity produced by the nuclear generator at Paks.
Sports
Hungary was represented by 16 athletes at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Bernadett Heidum, a short track speed skater,
carried the flag at the opening ceremony, while Szandra Lajtos
was chosen as the flag carrier for the closing ceremony. According
to the 27-year-old short track speed skater, the team leadership
wanted to pick someone from the relay team, which placed sixth in
the competition, and she was picked as the senior in this team. She
lives in Szeged, and this is the third Olympic participation for her.
At the 2002 Salt Lake City games she competed in the 500- and
1000-meter skate, while four years ago in Vancouver she was the
spare for the relay team.
Hungarians
The Csángó Dance organized in Budapest celebrated its 18th anniversary. Guests were greeted with traditional sweet bread and a
drink of pálinka at the entry, with music and dance inside. Traditional Csángó customs were presented on stage by elderly people, youth and children. The stage presentation was followed by a
táncház, concerts, song teaching and other programs at multiple
locations. The organizers of the Csángó Dance wish to raise awareness of the unfavorable social and economic processes that threaten the very existence of this group of Hungarians from Moldva,
and they also wish to gain supporters for the effort to sustain them
and keep them going. The patron of the event was János Áder, the
President of the Republic.
Fine Art
The 170th birthday of the great Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900) was commemorated by tours and a presentation at the Hungarian National Galleries in Budapest. His
first significant work was the “Yawning Apprentice,” a painting
that forecast the artistic direction of Munkácsy with its rich psychology and contrasting lights. Munkácsy gained world fame with
the painting entitled “Death Row” in 1869 and continued with a series of realist, folk-oriented paintings such as the “Return of the
Drunk Husband,” “Woman Churning Butter” and “Night Vagabonds.” After his move to Paris and his marriage to the widow of

Baron Marche, he turned away from critical realism and his
style became more eclectic. His painting entitled “Milton” won
the gold medal at the Paris World Expo, and he continued with
religious themes such as his “Christ before Pilate” and “Golgota.” The last piece of this trilogy, the “Ecce Homo” was finished
in 1895.
Protection of national monuments
The castle of Csesznek, which was erected during the building
rush following the 1241-42 Tartar invasion, has been recently renovated. The first castle was built around 1263, on the top of an easily defensible rock formation, at the orders of royal sword bearer
Jakab Cseszneki. During the following centuries it played an important role as a military base; then, during more peaceful times
its role changed, and it was developed into a comfortable baroque
castle for the Esterházy counts. According to contemporary sources, the noble family moved out in 1780, but the castle remained
inhabited by their servants for a while. Thirty years later an earthquake and subsequent fire rendered the property uninhabitable.
Gastronomy
The Budapest Fish Festival treated visitors to a Valentine’s Day
fish feast, live fish presentation, angling, fish soup cooking competition, hundreds of Hungarian and international fish dishes and
informational presentations on more than 50 different kinds of
fish. This was not only a gastronomical event but an exhibit of fish
native to Hungary, as well as a program dedicated to the memory
of Ottó Herman. Herman, a scientist and ethnographer who passed away 100 years ago, was remembered during hundreds of events throughout the year. He was commemorated during Fish
Festival since he wasn’t only a collaborator at the museum for many years, but worked hard to bring recognition to Hungarian fishing.
Education
Starting this September, more students will have a chance to
become exposed to the culture of horses. According to plans,
third, fourth and fifth graders will be able to participate in equestrian education funded by the government. The main goals of
this national equestrian education program are to introduce students to horse culture, to Hungarian horse traditions, and to the
basics of riding, along with encouraging a more environmentfriendly and healthy lifestyle. The subject will be elective.
Film
Immigration is a generational problem, with the whole youth of
Hungary facing the question of staying or leaving, said Roland
Ferge, director of the movie Away. The movie was awarded a special diploma at the recently concluded 64th Berlinal, the International Film Festival in Berlin. According to Ferge, studying and
working abroad is a choice and life strategy that younger and
younger people consider today. Kids start to think about moving to
other countries even during high school years. It is surprising to
hear from 15- or 16-years-olds that they are taking private Spanish lessons so that they will be able to seek employment in Latin
America, and it warrants some attention and reflection, said the
director, explaining his choice of the subject.

A Balassi Intézet pályázatot hirdet a kultúrális és nyelvi azonosságtudat megőrzésének és erősítésének érdekében a 2014/2015-os tanévre ösztöndíjra, a Kárpát-medencén kivül, nyugati diaszporában élő magyar származású személyek számára MAGYAR NYELVI és MAGYARSÁGISMERETI KÉPZÉSRE.
A képzés időtartama 10 hónap (2014. szeptember–2015. június).

2014-es ösztöndíj pályázat
Tanulj magyarul a Szövetség segítségével!
Háttér: 1989-ben Gábor Péter Csaba létrehozott egy ösztöndíjalapot 1,900 dollárral a magyar nyelv elsajátításának és a magyar kultúra terjesztésének elősegítésére. A
WMASz vezetősége korábbi években már több diáknak
fizetett ki ösztöndíjat. Az eredeti összeget a Microsoft
megduplázta, és mások nagylelkű adományaival is nőtt
az alap. Az ösztöndíjalapban jelenleg 6,543.07 dollár van.
Ösztöndíj kifizetésére csak az összegyűlt kamat használható fel. További adományokat szívesen veszünk az ösztöndíjalap javára.
Cél: A WashingtoniMagyarAmerikaiSzövetség (WMASz) jelenlegi
vezetősége úgy határozott, hogy 2014-ben pályázatot hirdet tanulók részére az alábbi feltételek mellett. A jelentkezők közül egy diákot fog kiválasztani az öt tag-ból álló
Ösztöndíj Bizottság, amelyet a vezetőség nevezett ki.
Az Ösztöndíj Bizottság és a vezetőség fenntartja a jogot
az ösztöndíj visszatartására, amennyiben a benyújtott jelentkezések nem felelnek meg az előírt követelményeknek.
2014-ben az ösztöndíj összege 300 dollárig terjed (ha a
program költsége kevesebb mint 300 dollár, a vezetőség a
tényleges összeget fizeti ki). Az ösztöndíj felhasználható a
program regisztrálási díjának és a repülőjegy kifizetésére.
Ki jelentkezhet (az összes felsorolt követelménynek eleget kell tenni): A diák és családja Washington államban
él és minimum 3 éve WMASz tagok. A diák jelenleg 8-12
osztályba, főiskolára vagy egyetemre jár. A diák évközi
bizonyítványának átlaga (GPA) legalább 3,5. A diák 2014
-re vonatkozó tervei közt van olyan, amely az alábbi kritériumok egyikének megfelel:
Az ösztöndíj a magyar nyelvtudás fejlesztésére hasz-nálható fel. Néhány példa a jóváhagyott tevékenységek és
programok közül (további ötleteket is elfogadhat a vezetőség): Ti Ti Tábor, magyar cserkésztábor az USA-ban,
magyar nyelvű nyári tábor Magyarországon vagy Erdélyben, közép-iskolai félév egy magyar középiskolában,
magyar nyelvtanfolyam az USA-ban, Magyarországon,
vagy Erdélyben. Az ösztöndíj összegét a jóváhagyott programra való regisztráció bizonyítása után utaljuk át a
nyertes családjának. Ha a nyertes nem jelentkezik 2014.
szept. 30-ig az öszöndíj átvételére, akkor az ösztöndíjat a
vezetőség visszavonhatja és másik nyertest választhat a
jogosult jelentkezők közül.
Az elbírálás szempontjai: A Bíráló Bizottság a „Ki jelentkezhet” rész 4 pontját figyelembe véve fogja kiválasztani a nyertest a jelentkezők közül. Nagyobb eséllyel indul az, aki ambíciózusabb, hosszú távra szóló tervet nyújt
be. Például, nagyobb esélye lesz annak a gyereknek, aki
egy szemesztert tervez elvégezni egy magyar középiskolában mint annak, aki Seattleben szándékozik beiratkozni egy egyhetes magyar nyelvtanfolyamra. Továbbá, a bizonyítvány és az esszé stí-lusa szintén befolyásolja majd
a döntést.
Jelentkezés:
Egy minimum 500 szóból álló fogalmazást kell a diáknak
írni angolul vagy magyarul arról, hogy miként tervezi felhasználni az ösztöndíjat. El kell magyaráznia, hogy a kiválasztott tevékenység miért fontos számára, vagy a környezete számára. Az esszé stílusa és a gondolat-me-nete
döntő tényező lesz az elbírálásnál. A diák 2013-2014-es
iskolai év féléves (vagy legutolsó) bizonyítványának másolatát mellékelni kell a jelentkezéshez. Ha a Bíráló Bizottság többsége úgy dönt, hogy szükség van személyes meghallgatásra a döntéshez, egy angol vagy magyar nyelvű
meghallgatást hívhat össze a jelentkezőkkel a végső döntés előtt.
Határidő: Kérjük a jelentkezési lapot a fogalmazással a
WMASz címére (P.O. Box 84425 Seattle, WA, 98124)
vagy Bede Emesének, [email protected], (telefonszám: (956) 867-1651) beküldeni legkésőbb 2014. március 31-ig. Az Ösztöndíj Bizottság április 15-ig értesíti a
nyertest. Így az ösztöndíjat a nyáron vagy a következő
tanévben fel tudja használni a nyertes.
Megjegyzés: A Bíráló Bizottság közvetlen hozzátartozói
nem jelentkezhetnek. Minden család csak egyszer nyerhet, akkor is, ha több gyerek van a családban. A Bizottság nem diszkriminál anyagi helyzet, a magyar közösségen belül végzett tevékenységek, állampolgárság-, faj,
nem, és vallás alapján.

HAAW Scholarship Competition 2014
Learn Hungarian with the Help of the Association!
Background: Csaba Péter Gábor has started a scholarship with $1900.00 in 1989 with the purpose of promoting the pursuit of Hungarian language and culture. The
scholarship has been awarded to several students by the
former HAAW Board. The original fund has been
matched by Microsoft and since then other people have
also donated to the fund. We are welcoming new donations to the fund. The current amount of the fund is
$6,838.90. Only the accumulated interest is available for
the scholarship for the coming years which is approximately $2,793.90 currently.
Goal: The current Board of the Hungarian American
Association of Washington (HAAW) decided to invite students to apply for the scholarship based on the rules below. One winner will be chosen by the Judging Panel for
the year of 2014. Five people will be invited to the Judging Panel by the Board. The Judging Panel and the
Board have the right not to award the scholarship in
2014 if they decide that none of the submitted applications meet the criteria listed below.
The amount of scholarship to be awarded in 2014:
Up to $300 (if the costs of the activity are under $300, the
HAAW will only reimburse that amount.) The scholarship can be applied toward the registration fee of the
activity and the airfare.
Who can apply (all of the listed qualification requirements need to be met): The student’s family has to have a
Washington residence and continuous HAAW membership for the past three years. The student has to attend
grades 8-12 or college/university currently. The student’s
mid-year report card must have at least a 3.5 grade point
average (GPA). The student needs to have plans for the
rest of 2014 which meet one of the following criteria:
The student needs to use the funds to improve his/her
Hungarian language skills. Some examples of approved
activities (other ideas might be approved by the Board):
Ti Ti Tábor, Hungarian Scouts camp in the US, summer
camp in Hungary or Transylvania where Hungarian language is used, a high-school semester in a Hungarian
high school, Hungarian language class in the US, Hungary or Transylvania. The scholarship fund will be transferred to the student’s family when the family can show a
proof of registration for the approved activity. If the
winner does not participate in the activity by the September 30, 2014, the award may be taken back by the
Board and another winner can be chosen from the
qualified applicants.
Judging Criteria:
The judging panel will take all 4 points from the “Who
can apply” section into consideration when choosing the
winner. The student will have a better chance of winning
with a more ambitious, longer term plan. For example,
the child who plans to spend a semester of high school in
Hungary will have a higher chance of winning then another student who wants to take a week long Hungarian
language class in Seattle. Furthermore, the higher the
student’s GPA is, the better his/her chance of winning. In
addition, the style of the essay and the student’s performance during the interview will also impact the decision.
How to apply (all of the listed requirements need to be
met in addition to above listed qualification requirements):
The student needs to write a minimum 500-word typed
essay in English or in Hungarian on his/her plans with
the scholarship. He/she should explain why the planned
activity is important for him/her or the world. The style
and thinking behind the essay will be a major decision
factor in the Panel’s decision.
If the Panel decides that there is a need for a personal interview, the Panel can ask the candidate for an interview
in English or in Hungarian to elaborate on his/her essay
before the final decision.
A copy of the student’s mid-year (2013-2014 school year)
report card needs to be attached.
Deadline: The essay application needs to be submitted to the Board of the HAAW either by regular mail

by March 31, 2014. The Panel will select and contact
the winner by April 15, 2014. The timing was chosen
to make sure that the winner could use the scholarship in the summer or for the next school year.
Disclaimers: The judging panel’s immediate family
members cannot apply. Each family cannot win more
than once in a lifetime, even if there are several children
in the family. The panel will not discriminate on the basis
of financial need, activity within the Hungarian community, citizenship, nationality, race, sex, religion.

Áprilisi kirándulás a Lincoln Parkban, West
Seattle-ben, 2014. április 13-án 11 órától
Sunday, April 13, 2014 - HAAW Hike at Lincoln Park, West Seattle
Felejtsd el az adóbevallást, és gyere velünk kirándulni! Több, a
Puget Soundra néző gyönyörű kilátópontja van ennek a parknak. Címe: 8011 Fauntleroy Way SW. A park fő parkolójának
déli csücskénél, a baseball pálya mellett találkozunk 11 órakor.
Egy körtúrát teszünk a parkban, megkeressük a szép kilátó
helyeket, és megállunk uzsonnázni. A körtúra hossza kb. 2
mérföld, ami minden korosztálynak megfelelő.
Come join your friends for a hike and forget about paying
taxes. This park has some great views of the Puget Sound. It
is located at 8011 Fauntleroy Way SW. We will be meeting at
the south end of the main parking lot near the baseball field
at 11:00 a.m.
We'll do a loop of the park, take in some nice views, and stop
for a snack. Round trip distance is about 2 miles, so this hike
is appropriate for all ages.
