ART GALLERY
Stop by and visit our art gallery located outside of the library. Our goal is to display work from every
South student sometime throughout the school year.
Inspiration for this art gallery originated in honor of Alexa Kersting, daughter of Loren and Monica
Kersting, who passed away in July of 2004 while waiting for a lung transplant.
During Alexa’s six years as a student here, she created many works of art and poetry, as all our students
have done. The frames for the gallery were purchased by the Kerstings to commemorate Alexa’s love of
the arts.
The following will have their art on display the week of Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, 2015. Nettesha Blah, Alexia Gabel, Clara Baukol, Keiara
Williams, Hailey Hurt, Olivia Griffin, Steven Skar, Brynn Decker, Daquantay Foreman, Carter Dauner, Rylan Bredahl, Samira Abdi,
Kason Buchholz, Laurence Gisubizo, Florance Mutoni, Cyntia Mponimpaye, Macray Braun, Ella Burns, Megan Wold.

As school has started, we want to reiterate information about head lice.
Current guidelines from the ND Department of Health recommend children NOT be excluded immediately from
school when head lice is found. We must remember that head lice are a nuisance, but not harmful.
However, West Fargo Public Schools will continue to follow a NO NITS Policy.
If the school finds a student with head lice or nits (head lice eggs) the parent is contacted and the student will
be sent home. The student needs to be checked in by the school nurse when they return to school.
Head lice is transmitted through prolonged close head to head contact. Transmission is more likely to occur between family members, overnight guests and playmates that spend a lot of time together.
Due to the low risk of transmitting head lice at school and to maintain confidentiality, letters will NOT be sent to
parents of classmates and classrooms will NOT be checked.
Parents are encouraged to check their child periodically for head lice. If you are concerned your child may be
infected or you need help in identifying head lice, please contact a health care professional, school nurse or public
health department.
Please contact your school nurse with any questions.
An excellent resource is available at www.ndhealth.gov/head-lice/
When students become ill at school, they will be taken to the nurse’s office. Parents will be notified and required to remove their child if
deemed necessary. If you are unable to come to the school to pick up your sick child, please make arrangements for another adult to pick up
your child as soon as possible. Please do not ask the school to allow a sick child to walk home, as we are concerned for their safety and
welfare. Please do not send the child to school to be assessed by the nurse. If your child has an elevated temperature, rash, diarrhea or is
vomiting at home DO NOT send to school
Children with the following symptoms should not be sent to school and/or school activities:
Thermometer indicates a temperature of 100 degrees or more (don’t give fever reducing medication and then send them to school)
Vomiting or diarrhea
Students may not return to school until:
Their temperature has remained below 100 degrees for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol, etc.
There has been no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of OTC medications.
When a student has been diagnosed with a contagious infection and was given a prescription medication, the student may not
return to school until they have taken the medication a full 24 hours and their temperature has remained below 100 degrees for 24
hours.

Students whose parents attended the September PTA meeting got to play Bingo with Mr. Kersting on Friday.
Lights! Camera! Action! South Stars are walking the red carpet! Our positive behavior support theme for this year is all Hollywood. Students who display positive behaviors at school are selected for our “South Stars Wall of Fame” located by the music
room. Students get their picture on the wall, receive a smencil and earn special seating in the lunchroom for a day.
Classrooms also earn group awards by completing a South Stars Oscar Ballot. The class receives a group star for positive behavior
in art, phys. ed., health, library, recess, lunch, etc. Once their ballot is completed, they earn a group incentive from their teacher.
Our stars are definitely shining brightly!
