FROM THE PASTOR……..
Building an Enduring Faith: Standing as God’s Workmanship of Love
When we gather as God’s people for worship here at Trinity, we begin worship with a process that
reminds us who we are. We sing praise to God in a hymn or song. We invoke His name, asking God to
be present among us and reminding ourselves who and whose we are. We confess our sins to Him and
to one another and receive God’s forgiveness. We offer ourselves in response to His great love and
return thanks to Him with the gifts He has given us this week. We pray for our needs and others. We
receive from our Lord His Sacrament for forgiveness of sin and strengthening of faith. And we hear His
Word for direction, correction, confrontation and training in righteousness.
This is the same re
re--creation process we hear in our Scripture
lessons. In Ephesians, St. Paul explains it: we, dead in sin, meet
God who is rich in mercy and love for us. He makes us alive in His
forgiveness and grace. Now we are “His workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
When we have a problem with being created and
recreated by God (that’s in the Gospel lesson), we have
a problem believing that we are His workmanship. But
when we understand that we are God’s workmanship of
love and that He has prepared us to be – and that He
expects us to act – our faith is strengthened and we look
for opportunities to be His love. God working in us
compounds His love in us. In other words, His love
makes us love and makes us love more.
An enduring faith is built when we see God’s handiwork
in us. We understand He gives us His grace and the
Holy Spirit for His purposes. That’s why our mission as
followers of Jesus is “To connect people in Roselle and
beyond in real, loving relationship with God, through
Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, with one
another in a contagious Christian community, and with
their calling of servanthood in the world.”
What has your experience been? When have you felt
yourself empowered by God to act in love? Is there
more re
re--creation God has to do in your life?
What experiences of God’s grace have encouraged you
to love more?
