Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy Address Oostelijke Handelskade 34 1019 BN Amsterdam Netherlands http://www.lloydhotel.com . The Lloyd Hotel, a former immigrants’ hostel, is a new hotel centrally situated in the Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands area. Several Dutch architects, designers and artists have transformed this monument dating from 1921 into a hotel. MVRDV were responsible for the design of the main hall, the heart of the building. Here a new dining room is cut out of the existing structure, forming a 6-storey void with three boxes and platforms hanging inside it. All 117 rooms - with ratings from one to five stars - differ in size and interior. MVDRV and Joep van Lieshout, together with Bureau Lakenvelder, designed several rooms; furniture and interior objects were contributed by a.o. Claudy Jongstra, Hella Jongerius, Marcel Wanders and Richard Hutten. . photo: Allard van der Hoek Project is public! . Piraeus Address Levantkade 127 1019 MJ Amsterdam Netherlands . The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen. Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters. It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces. It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments. The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8. The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing. All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Project is not public! . Java Island Address Java-eiland 1019 Amsterdam Netherlands . Java and KNSM Island were both created at the end of the 19th century as wave-breakers for Oostelijke Handelskade. Later they were enlarged and became part of the harbour docks. When the harbour moved away in the 1960s, the islands were deserted, and in the 1990s they were transformed into housing areas for ca. 2500 inhabitants. On Java Eiland, five architecture firms each designed an apartment building. These houses are distributed along the south and north quay according to a seemingly random pattern. In the four smaller side canals, younger architects got the chance to design smaller canal houses. In-between lies a green corridor, which is only accessible for bikes and pedestrians. photo: Bontenbal . Project is public! . Buslines 48 and 65 stop at the same square. The island is best accessible by bicycle, foot or tram. . . . http://www.mimoa.eu/users/Dgarciac/Guides/Amsterdam%3A%20Eastern%20Docklands/ this page is part of Mi guide 'Amsterdam: Eastern Docklands' made by D Garcia, Delft, Netherlands 4 photo: Kruunenberg Architecten . photo: Kruunenberg Architecten . . Canal houses on Java Island Address Lamongracht / Brantasgracht 1019 RK Amsterdam Netherlands . In this project, both popular tastes and the demand for individualisation were answered by choosing this particular type of housing and commissioning several architects. This canal house is designed for co-habitation by two independent households. The 'duo-home' has a common living room, kitchen and bathroom and two individual living areas of equal size. In order to make the residence suitable for various forms of 'co-habitation' the floors are well connected to each other and yet can be used independently. The entry to the house in situated in the side street. However, the residents can also gain entry via the garden and reach their own individual living areas without having to pass through the common rooms. The living room on the ground floor can be accessed directly from the canal; hence this space is also suitable for other uses. The house features outer walls of red brick and wood window frames. In the lower level where the common spaces are situated, the casings are finished wit photo: Kruunenberg Architecten . Project is not public! . . . . . . . On Borneo-Island, in the former Eastern Docks area of Amsterdam, Marlies Rohmer designed a compact block which encloses two collective courtyards. The location is bordered by water on one side (the former inner harbour) and a street, the island's main access route, on the other. The dwellings are arranged back-to-back around the two collective courtyards, each of which measures 28 by 10 metres. The outer ring contains three-storey maisonettes with kitchen-dining rooms at street level and "barn doors" which can be opened in a variety of ways, so establishing a relation between the dwelling and the wide public footpath. This should result in a lively street atmosphere. The inner ring of dwellings, lining the courtyards, consist of two-storey studio apartments resting on an underground car park. The courtyards are tiled with a pattern of Spanish tiles in earth colours, in contrast to the brickwork on the outside of the block. photo: Christian Richters . Project is not public! . Six Dwellings in Borneo Eiland Address Scheepstimmermanstraat 39 1019 WT Amsterdam Netherlands . The Borneo project is a large scale intervention, in the central harbour at Amsterdam. The Six Dwellings are a very small part of it. EMBT depart from the existing planning conditions; a house on each side of the street and they transformed it into a single long house that faces both streets. The first hypothesis is the abstract planning; a single long house from street to street. Then, the small street that existed in the planning becomes an empty house. EMBT wanted to investigate the Dutch tradition about single room constructions. From this abstract hypothesis, a much more intuitive way of working with living conditions is developed. The architect like to play with abstract dimensions that later will become living conditions. photo: Adrian Welch . Project is public! . Borneo Sporenburg Address C. van Eesterenlaan 41 1019 JK Amsterdam Netherlands http://www.amsterdamdocklands.com . A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg. The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings. Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands. The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants. photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives . Project is public! . How to get there The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island. It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7. It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island. From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo. You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station. Or rent a bike. . . . http://www.mimoa.eu/users/Dgarciac/Guides/Amsterdam%3A%20Eastern%20Docklands/ this page is part of Mi guide 'Amsterdam: Eastern Docklands' made by D Garcia, Delft, Netherlands 9 photo: Naomi Schiphorst . photo: architour . . Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Address Panamakade 144 1019 AX Amsterdam Netherlands http://www.amsterdamdocklands.com . Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo. The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina. The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes. photo: Matthijs Borghgraef . Project is public! . The Whale Address Baron G. A. Tindalplein 1 1019 TW Amsterdam Netherlands . The Whale is one of three big “meteorites” which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg. Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark. Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space. Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places. The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath. Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8. The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade. . Project is not public! . . . . . . . . . . Borneo Sling Address P. Dijkstraplein 2 1019 WE Amsterdam Netherlands . At the end of a row-housing with patios and an internal corridor with garages, this 3 storey apartment block is made by using the ending of the concrete tunnel structure. The concrete tunnel construction is a very common way to built series of row-housing in the Netherlands. This project is an atypical solution to the inevitably end of such a row. The block of dwellings has been cut of at the end of the line, and here 3 spacious apartments with terraces have been built. The apartments have their façade over the full width of the block, giving them a panoramic view over the IJ. The space in-between the balconies is filled with several glazed rooms, executed in different colors, symbolizing the functions and giving the spectator a view of what could be inside. photo: Christian Richters . Hoogtij Address KNSM laan 2 1019 LL Amsterdam Netherlands . At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other. Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size. West is the larger of the two: ‘Langhaus’. ‘Langhaus’ has large ‘gaps’ on each side of the block. It is 8 stories high. The lower part, on the east side, is called ‘Hofhaus’. It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor. This project raised very different reactions: some find it the ‘little ugly duckling’ of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very ‘quiet’. photo: Maarten Helle .
