Members of the crow family, including crows and blue jays, are on the A list. They can be very adaptable, too. But they can be extremely leery, as well. For example, blue jays were the first birds to find a deer carcass within 50 yards of a basement door. When a person stayed out of view and slid the door open a crack to photograph them, they usually flushed. It seemed that unless they were facing away from the door or came in after the door was slid open, did they tolerate having their pictures taken. They seem, at other times, to be brave, mobbing owls and birds many times their size. They scream at hunters and other birds they detect in a woods. While they eat mostly insects, nuts and seeds, suet is another way to bring them to feeders, but they hog the food, taking large quantities with them to cache someplace for later meals. They are a beautiful bird, but not liked by everyone. 24/7 . . . Rain or Shine . . . The regulations vary regarding general creel limits, so make sure to check the fishing regulations. Many of the state parks are similar to this 5,350-acre park in having at least one fishing opportunity. In Governor Dodge, there are two lakes, Cox Hollow, 96 acres, and Twin Valley, 152 acres. “I love to fish Governor Dodge because it has two lakes and each one is a bit different,” said Carl Schultz, of Spring Green. He was fishing with his son, Cailub, 10, and his friend, Naomi Hacker, and her two sons, Tyler Gleichauf, 3, and Collin Hacker, 10, also of Spring Green. “I’ll fish other parks, including Blackhawk Lake, west of Dodgeville,” Schultz said. Naomi Hacker, even though this was only her second time ice fishing, was thrilled to find a place where the boys could fish and when they tired of that could just run around. “We all like to eat the fish,” Naomi Hacker said. “We co-clean the fish but Carl is the cook. If we catch enough, we’ll eat them right away and if we have more than enough, those go in the freezer.” On a 25-degree day all it took was to prepare some sandwiches, put the gear in the truck and head to Governor Dodge State Park. “Ice fishing seems to be fun. Mester Memorial Ride Supports Local Service Groups [Dodgeville] The Annual Memorial Ride in Memory of Brian and Josh Mester continues its positive impact on this community. Chris Mester, mother of Brian and Josh, expressed great thanks to all of the businesses and participants who continue to support the event each year. This summer marked the seventh year for the ride and as a result, approximately $3,400 will be contributed to four service organizations: Upland Hills Hospice, Mineral Point Fire Department, Mineral Point Rescue and the Mineral Point Drug Abuse Resistance Education program (D.A.R.E.). The Mester Memorial Ride has contributed over $33,400 to local service organizations since it began. “Every year is unique because of the people who come out to support the event and celebrate the boys’ lives,” Chris explained. “In addition to the ride, local businesses donate items and services that we raffle off as well, allowing us to raise more money. We couldn’t do it without their support.” The Memorial Ride is held the last weekend in July. Anyone is welcome to join the trek that routes through Southwest Wisconsin each summer. The Iowa County Board is considering limiting the use of county roads for such events and this could impact future plans for this annual memorial ride. Chris is hoping the ride will be able to continue because, “Riding a Harley Davidson is what both boys really enjoyed,” BARNEVELD SHOPPER SATURDAY NOON DEADLINE: 12:00 PM Items received on or before Saturday's mail will be included in the upcoming Thursdays publication. $10.00/30 words or less, 10 cents for each additional word after 30. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. Smoking coupled with high radon levels increases the risk of lung cancer. Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium, which is found in nearly all soils. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and seeps into homes through cracks and other holes in the foundation. The radon gas can be trapped inside the home where it can build up. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. The EPA and the Surgeon Gen- eral recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. High radon levels have been found in every state and in every type of house. Approximately 5-10 percent of Wisconsin homes have elevated radon levels. Testing is inexpensive and easy — and should only take a few minutes. Test kits are available free of charge at the Iowa County Health Department, 303 West Chapel Street, Floor 2, Suite 2200, Dodgeville, WI 53533. Making repairs to eliminate radon gas can be simple and affordable. A typical radon problem can be solved for less than $1,000. For more information or to locate a qualified contractor, con tact the Iowa County Health Department at (608) 930-9870. Sitting Too Long May Increase Risk Of Death, Study Suggests Leicester, England – The risks of disease and death increase with long periods of sitting, even in otherwise active individuals, according to a new study from the University of Leicester. The study combined results from 18 other studies and included nearly 800,000 participants. Results were independent of the amount of moderate or vigorous physical activity being done, meaning the health of active individuals could still be compromised if they sit for several hours a day. Proceeds to benefit Camp Gray Scholarship Fund Researchers concluded that people who sit for long periods have a twofold increase in the risk of diabetes, heart disease and death. In a press release, they recommended reducing sitting time by standing more often. This could include breaking up long periods at the computer by working on a laptop placed on a filing cabinet, conducting standing meetings, walking during lunch breaks, and avoiding sedentary behaviors during non-work hours. The study was published in the journal Diabetologia. Enjoy the Birds All Winter Long Festooning a tree with goodies for the neighborhood wildlife is an activity that everyone in the family can enjoy. Any small tree can be a candidate for decoration, though an evergreen will provide shelter as well. Choose a tree that is close to a window, so that you will have a warm, front row seat. If you don’t have a tree available, remember that this is an excellent way to recycle your Christmas tree. Trim up the bottom and set the tree into a large pot filled with sand. A little water and our cold winter temperatures will complete the set-up. Once a tree is chosen, you can start making decorations. Orange cups are really easy to create. Cut the oranges in half and hollow out the pulp. Poke a bamboo skewer across the top, and then fill the orange half with a mixture of melted lard or suet, and birdseed. You can use suet cakes from the Garden Center if you can’t find it from at your grocery store. Once the mixture is hardened, tie a bit of natural yarn, jute or raffia to either end of the skewer to make a loop for hanging. Bread feeders are a way use up stale loaf ends, as well as bagels, donuts, and rice cakes. Make a hole in the bread, if necessary, and thread it with some natural string. You can do the same thing with thick slices of apples, pears and figs. Make a pine cone feeder by softening natural peanut butter with some bacon grease. Set pine cones on some waxed paper and spoon the mixture into the scales. Once the peanut butter begins to set, roll the cones in some birdseed. Hang the cones with a length of raffia. Once you’re finished making the feeders, it’s time to decorate the tree. We recommend using natural materials to tie the ornaments to the branches to provide nesting materials. Then all you have to do is to find a seat in front of the window and settle in for the show. You are helping the birds survive the winter and they will entertain you during those short, dark days in January and February. “is it worth it to advertise in your local newspaper?” For many small businesses that sell to consumers, yes it is — provided you think of your local newspaper as not being the major-metro newspaper but the local community or suburban newspaper, where the audience is targeted, the ad rates lower, and the staff motivated to place your marketing message with more of a personal touch.
