These fungal growths result from a few mushroom spores landing in a favorable location and then growing out equally in all directions if there are proper nutrients in the soil. Depending on what the fungi do to the soil, nutrients and grass roots, the grass may turn darker green or dry out and appear dead. There is a common mushroom, the fairy ring fungus, which grows in this pattern. It is edible and has some interesting characteristics, too, including being able to dry up and then revive when conditions become more favorable. This is unusual for mushrooms, which usually dry up and stop growing even if conditions change. Even though the fairy ring fungus is edible, it should be avoided if it is found growing in a lawn or golf course where pesticides and herbicides have been used. Mushrooms are known to accumulate toxins and the way the rid themselves of the chemicals is to transport them out to the fruiting body (mushroom) and that’s the portion we eat but in this case should avoid. Gary Luhman, new owner of what is now Gary’s Repair in Barneveld, says he just likes to help people. “I don’t want to make a million dollars; I just want to make enough money to pay the bills and have enough to retire someday. I like to fix cars.” His business card holds true to that theme. “Full Service- Auto Repair and Fuel Shop. The business phone is 924-5335, email garysrepair102@ gmail.com Luhman purchased the building and property from Randy Danz, who had the business for 45 FROM LAWN MOWING TO TRIMMING WE HAVE THE RIGHT TOOL TO MAKE YOUR CHORES GO FASTER. years at 102 Business ID, in Barneveld. “I do everything but alignment,” Luhman said. “I’ll see how much call there is for that, but the equipment to get into alignment is expensive.” Luhman’s hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday. He’s worked in the auto repair business most of his life, including 14 years at Iowa County Chrysler, at his own service station in Ridgeway, in Sauk City, and for eight years for the Mount Horeb School District. He continues to service school busses, but now for the Barneveld School District. Luhman’s wife, Lynn, runs the counter so Gary doesn’t have to drop his wrench and turn to the cash register. Iowa County will periodically close the north half of the USH 18/151 intersections with three side roads – East Brigham Road, Mounds View Road, and CTH K also known as or Shortcut Road. During these side road closures, access to USH 18/151 will not be allowed between the travel lanes of USH 18/151 and the side road listed for the north half of the intersection. That is drivers will not be able to access USH 18/151 from the north side of the side road listed, nor will drivers be able to exit USH 18/151 to the side road. East Brigham Road and Mounds View Road will be closed between CTH ID and USH 18/151 for the days of Monday thru Friday for the weeks of September 12th and 19th. Iowa County asks that you reduce your speeds in work zones and obey the posted signage, obey the move over laws, and be aware of our workers in the vicinity and corridor. This festival has components in: architecture/historic preservation and energy efficient building, prairie and land heritage, homesteading practices, and cultural sustainability, including old-time music and dance workshops. Students will be able to learn a multitude of practical and musical skills, including log work on our 1848-era log cabin. Meals will be largely organic and locally sourced, and we will feature a special Saturday night farm-to-table dinner provided by Circle M Farm. September 9-11th, 2016 at Folklore Village Sustainability Weekend Activities include laying the logs of the historic Aslak Lie Cabin, touring the energy-efficient Underhill House in the Ridgeway area, learning how to make your own herbal oils with Driftless Mama, hiking our restored prairie with a naturalist, drying foods, and learning how to use European scythe garden tools. Additional activities include an Autumn cooking class with Cena Sharp from The Driftless Market and a discussion titled "Every Bite You Take": How Food Connects Us to Past, Place, People, and the Future with Lucy M. Long. (PhD, Folklore and Folklife, University of Pennsylvania) For aspiring musicians and dancers, we will offer a range of dance calling workshops (how to call an easy square), clogging workshops and old-time guitar, fiddle, bass and mandolin workshops. These will be led by caller Rina Rossi and by our visiting guest band, The Red Squirrel Chasers. The Squirrel Chasers will be teaching workshops throughout the day and playing for your dancing pleasure at night. This driving and powerful string band inhabits that hazy musical boundary between the old-time string bands of the 1920's and the bluegrass sounds that emerged in the 1940's. Jamming is encouraged all weekend and there are nightly square dances. Delicious local and organic meals are catered all weekend, and we have affordable tenting and bunking on-site if needed. You can register for whatever part of the weekend you want with flexible part and full time options. Friday's potluck, concert and dance is only $12.00 for adults and Saturday's dance is also $12.00. Go to our website www.folklorevillage.com and Calendar Of Events to get the registration form, schedule, and to learn more about all the workshops and activities. Questions?
