Green and dry wood often
have smells typical of their species.
For example, white oak wood has
a pleasant, some would say sweet,
smell. In contrast, red oak has a
pungent, sour smell when cut and
split.
These smells usually diminish as the wood dries, particularly
if the wood is milled. But a blindfolded person should be able to tell
red oak from white oak with their nose.
Basswood and box elder are easily identified by their smells,
too, and so is elm. Red (slippery) elm has a different odor than white
(American) elm.
These scents seem to be as potent in our memories as other
characteristics of firewood.
Substances (chemicals) are often unique to particular woods,
which make them smell different. Acids, phenols, aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers and esters are a few examples of these chemicals.
In mst cases, the older the tree, the more profound the identifying odors become.
To the plant, these compounds are more than something
that identifies the wood. Physiologists might call some of these substances waste products, end compounds the plant no longer needs,
or cannot use. But some of them are important in killing organisms
that might get into the wood. Some have been extracted or copied
and used to kill germs, bacteria, fungi or repel insects.

“Ginger, cinnamon and allspice give this pumpkin pancake recipe just
a hint of sweetness, making it the perfect fall breakfast.”
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS:
1.
In a bowl, mix together the milk, pumpkin, egg, oil and vinegar. Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda,
allspice, cinnamon, ginger and salt in a separate bowl. Stir into the
pumpkin mixture just enough to combine.
2.
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high
heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately
1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

the deer she eventually shot,” William Carden said.
This was Ashland’s first deer.

back to the house with her deer.
Each youngster was participating in a two-day, statewide gun
deer season hunt for persons 10-15
years old.
The young hunters had to
be accompanied by an adult, making it necessary for Conrad and
Ashland to have at least one person
hunt, in addition to providing moral support .
Conrad is a 5th grader at Arena Community Elementary School.
He killed his buck with a .243 caliber rifle.
“He had to wait about 10 minutes to get the right shot,” his father
said.
“I didn’t want to hit a twig
and have the bullet miss the deer,”
Conrad said. “When I first saw the
deer it was facing away from me and
I didn’t have a shot then, either.”
“I was proud of him that he
waited for the right shot,” said David
Youngquist, who is an Iowa County
Department of Natural Resources

Ashland, who is in 4th grade
at Barneveld Elementary School,
loves venison. In fact she was eating
venison jerky all the while she was
waiting for a deer to show up late on
Sunday.
That’s what will become of

also favors.

she first saw the buck, took the time

blew the truck’s horn three times.
“Oh, that’s some type of tradition to blow the horn when someone gets a deer. That’s all I know
about it,” Joanne Carden said.

field. With two girls injured, we had to make
some changes to our line-up and the girls did a
great job making those adjustments! It was so
great to have both Abigail Bahr and Carly Kolze come off of the bench and end the sets with
kills against Omro. Liz Skaife, typically a back
row player, also got a kill in this game. I am so
proud of the girls and how they worked together
all day. Kassy Bauman and Taylor Owens were
put into roles they don’t typically play, but they
stepped up and helped our team earn those wins.
Jenna Wright did a great job of covering our
hitters and finding the open spots on the floor.
Our setters, Kelsee Fargo and Sarah Cannoy,
have really found their groove and are playing
so well together. Rachel Slaney was a leader all
day and helped us get those kills when we really needed them. This tournament was just what
we needed before playing Monticello on Thursday and starting playoffs against Argyle on Tuesday. Everyone please come and support us as we
travel to Argyle for the first round of playoffs!”

Bailey Olsen is a senior at Barneveld High
School. Bailey has been involved in different activities
through high school. He played baseball his freshmen
year, and participated in drama his sophomore and
junior year. Bailey’s favorite classes in high school
were gym, shop classes and math with Mr. Walker.
One of Bailey’s favorite memories in high school was
going on drives with Sam Moyer, Joe Ruhland and
Keller Kirch. Bailey’s favorite teachers are Mr. Walker
and Mr. Elfering. After high school Bailey is planning
on going to Southwest Technical College and get an
associate’s degree in industrial mechanic. Good luck
to Bailey Olsen in the future as an industrial mechanic.

The Barneveld girls volleyball team traveled
all the way to Westfield and ended up winning the
whole tournament. The girls played two games right
away against Ithaca winning in two games 25-13;
25-22, and against Omro winning 25-10; 25-14. The
girls played really hard with no complaining about
how long of a day they had ahead of them. The volleyball team ended up playing Westfield and Poynette back to back winning both of them. Westfield
was a struggle for the girls and they almost ended up
losing, but each match they came back to win them
all. The scores of the Westfield game was Barneveld
26-24; 25-23, and the scores of the Poynette game
was 25-14; 25-20. The last game was what showed
how tired the girls were, but how much passion they
had to win. They ended up winning against Edgar in
three matches 25-16; 17-25; 15-11. The intensity of
this game was very high and the girls loved how everyone could participate in their win. A word from

Team would like to say “Thank-you” to all that supported our “Golfing Fore More Than A Cure” golf
outing on Saturday, September 6th. This event raised
over $5500 with all proceeds going to the “More
Than A Game” cancer awareness event that over the
past 6 years has helped over 30 local families and has
supported cancer research. Our next “More Than A
Game” event will be held on February 5, 2015, when
the Barneveld Girls’ Basketball team hosts Monticello.

Last Friday night’s match up between the
Mount Horeb/Barneveld Vikings and the Baraboo
Thunder Birds one of the worst games the Vikings
had played all year. As expected, the Vikings quickly
took control of the game by scoring two quick touchdowns and 2 point conversions to make the score
16-0. The T-Birds began to fight back and scored a
touchdown in the first quarter, and kept the Viking offense scoreless. With that, the Viking defense pushed
the T-Birds back into the end zone scoring two points
on a safety. The score at the end of half was 18-6.
The second half was full of penalties and the Viking
offense held themselves to only one touchdown in
the third quarter. The fourth quarter was full of drama and touchdowns. The Vikings scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but suffered 4 personal
foul penalties. The Vikings running back was ejected
from the game. The T-Birds found some energy but
it was too little too late. The score at the end of the
game was Mount Horeb/Barneveld- 39, Baraboo- 20.

Our cross country team last Saturday, October 3rd, worked hard but struggled throughout the
meet. The cross country team has been having a
rough streak but I’m sure if they keep on going they
will do better. Our own Matthew Meyer got a total
time of 21:17. Matthew Meyers says, “We didn’t
do that good as a team, we normally do better.”

played at Madison Day last Saturday. Starting
the game off quick, scoring in the first three
minutes of the game on a cross into the middle.
The opposing teams defense held tough sending
back many shots throughout the first half. The
home team never gave up; resulting in a score

with about ten minutes left in the game. The
Vangaurds came alive and got the ball into the
back of the net and breaking the tie. The defense
held for the remaining of the game, ending the
game in a 21 victory. Coach’s words, “We had to
dig deep to win the game. We now need to move
on to the next game against Prarie du Chein.”

Recent Study Shows Most Businesses Do Not Sell
Tobacco To Underage Youth
The WI Wins program recently completed a tobacco compliance checks in the city of Dodgeville
and other retailers within Iowa
County. Dodgeville was at 100% in
compliance as there were no sales to
our minors. Six retailers were visited. Although the tobacco compliance checks have not been finished,
as there are a few left within Iowa
County, we are grateful there have
not been any other sales throughout
the county, at this point.
Due to funding cuts and
that many retailers no longer sell tobacco, many less tobacco checks are
completed throughout Iowa County. Presently only 23 checks are
completed in Iowa County.

County businesses that did not sell.

underage youth, aids in keeping
youth from beginning to smoke or
use other tobacco products
The purpose of the WI Wins
program is to reduce the number of
tobacco sales to Wisconsin minors.
In the year 2001, 35% of Wisconsin
businesses sold to underage youth,
in 2013 studies show only 5% of the
businesses sold. “All retail clerks
can and should do the right thing
for Wisconsin by refusing to sell
to minors and we are proud of the
Iowa County retailers who are doing just that.”
Studies like this will continue to be done in the future.

this project will not be completely
successful until ALL establishments
refuse to sell to underage youth.
“Our goal is to stop the illegal sales
of tobacco to minors, thus hoping to
make a dent in the number of youth
who may become nicotine addicted

Fire Hydrants: ORDINANCE #8.06 The Owner or occupant of any property which abuts a fire hydrant shall refrain
from obstructing the hydrant or access to the hydrant in any
way, and shall remove all snow from the hydrant and at least
four feet around the hydrant within twenty-four (24) hours
of a snowfall and keep the hydrant free of snow at all times
unless a waiver is approved by the Barneveld-Brigham Fire
Chief. Waivers need to be applied for each year by September 1st and will be good October 1st through September
30th.

Every community has items that help
make an area, town,
or village what it is.
These items may be
huge and valuable, tiny
and seemingly worthless, or even impossible to be structurally
described.
An item might be
the smell of freshly cut
and conditioned alfalfa
just prior to the Fourth
of July, or a particular
forest or fence post
that is often covered
with hoar frost or rime
frost when the local
air is able to initiate
changes in the state of
moisture in early January, as it goes from a
solid to liquid to gas
or skips one of these
physical states.
Maybe a recognizable animal, wild or
domestic, is frequently seen by residents or
visitors, often in the
same location.
Even the angles
a farmer creates when
he or she plants a corn
field have come to be
watched, maybe subconsciously.
Special items
are old buildings that
remain
upright
in
spite of violent winds,
potholes that never
succumb to repeated
patching, or century-old trees that mark
time internally.
Doors mysteriously painted blue may
be pointed out to give
directions to a nearby
neighbor or delivery
service driver.
The sounds of
Sunday morning motor bikes racing on local county roads can
be special items, albeit
unpleasant to some.
Everyone has

and I’ll share a few of
them in this newspaper
during the next several
months and provided a
touch of history.
