BARNEVELD EMS SAYS FAREWELL TO AL WRIGHT
It was with regret that the Barneveld
Area Rescue Squad recently accepted the resignation of long-time member Al Wright. Al
has selflessly served the community and his
fellow EMT’s for in excess of 35 years.
During his years of volunteer service, Al
has lived a full, successful life. His accomplishments have been many. He was named the
Wisconsin EMS Association’s EMT of the Year
by his fellow EMT’s; he received state recognition for his EMS contributions by the American Legion; and he is highly regarded at the
local level. He is especially remembered for his
tireless efforts during the times of the tornado.
He not only assisted in the rebuilding of the
Rescue Squad but also purchased and has suc-
cessfully run Wright’s Feed Mill. He has been
a calming presence during the times of personal sadness and fear for countless people of the
community. He has had a lifelong passion for
the Village of Barneveld and the surrounding
area.
Al served for a number of years as treasurer of the Rescue Squad and most notably as
the Chief for in excess of 18 years. We were led
well, and he made it his mission to assure that
Barneveld embraced change and improvement
in all facets of EMS in Wisconsin. Our squad
went from offering basic EMT skills to our
present day of offering advanced EMS skills.
Al has faced what all EMT’s deal with
daily – shortened family time, lost hours on
BU238
BU238
the job, sleepless nights, missed meals and the
emotions that many of our calls force us to
face. He has built a business, raised a family,
dealt with personal illness and injury and has
known tragedy. Al has also contributed countless hours to the school, community organizations and his church. Al has a great sense
of humor which has served him well. He has
come through this life journey filled with compassion and grace.
Al is a true leader - professionally, personally and publicly. He embodies the words
“true public servant”. He has been a gift to this
community. We thank him and wish him many
years of health and happiness in his retirement.

Maple trees, particularly silver
and red maples, are more than sources
of spring sap, summer shade and autumn color displays.
Like most deciduous trees, maples produce flowers that develop into
fruits. The fruit of a maple is that single-bladed helicopter-like structure
we see twirling down from the tree’s
branches on a windy spring day.
Way before the fruit begins to develop a flower bud
produces a flower, then a single-seeded fruit forms.
Squirrels know as much about maples as we do. Sometimes they gnaw into plastic tubing and drink the sap that is
meant for the sugar busher syrup-making system.
Then these gray and fox squirrels climb the tree and eat
flower buds. It’s much easier than digging up old acorns.
Finally they top off their maple diet by shelling out
single seeds from the dry, papery fruits. They never seem
to tire of this meal until early berries and nuts begin to mature.
Like many of nature’s parcels, maple seeds are packed
with nutrients that were meant for a developing embryo
and seedling, unless the squirrels find them first.

Walt Rayfield, of Stoughton,
puts catching catfish above pursuing trout, walleyes and panfish.
He doesn’t understand how
or why some catching techniques
work, such as the kind of bait, but
he keeps on using what works as
long as it puts fish on the table.
“Stink baits are about the
closest thing to putting a fish call
in the water and all the catfish
come to it,” Rayfield said.
He doesn’t know what the
attraction is and there doesn’t
seem to be any natural food in
the water that mimics this concoction.
“There really isn’t anything
to dislike about fishing for catfish,” he said, “except you better
not have any social engagement
to go to until after you take a
shower.”
The smell of the bait, the
mud and blood, and the cleaning of the fish can leave one a
bit messy, but the meal makes it
all worth it. Fish in the one to
three-pound range provide the
best meals.
Rayfield has been involved
in the bait and tackle business for
a long time, and he still is. He
knows that talking about baiting the worm can be misleading
until one sees the hollow worm,
which resembles a piece of surgical tubing.
“You push the worm down
into the bait bucket with a paint
stick and get the stink bait all
over and inside the worm,” he
explains. “Then pull it out of the
bucket and put it in the water.”
But catfishing isn’t resting
the pole on the bank or against a
stick and waiting, at least not for
Rayfield. “You’ve got to set the
hook and to do that, you need
the pole in your hand.”
The worms come in different
colors but the color doesn’t seem
to matter much, even though this
catfisher prefers pink and orange
worms, because they work for
him.
Hot months and hot weather are best; June, July and August.
Any time works, but Rayfield
prefers dusk and beyond.
A rig might start at about $50
for the rod and reel with heavy
monofilament line, 12-17-pound
test will get one started.
Rayfield will see if he can excite others about this unique way
of preparing for a fish fry.
On June 6, he and John
Motoviloff, a wild foods cookbook author, will be at McFarlane’s in Sauk City to talk catching and then eating catfish and
other fishes from 11 to 2 p.m.
Motoviloff is prepared
to prepare some grub for those
attending his talk. He will also
have copies of his new book,
“Wild Rice Goose: and other
dishes of the Midwest” for sale.
“I’ll demo some of the
recipes in the book and show
people the basics of making fish
taste good.
Motoviloff has been preparing wild foods for 25 years.
“Fishers don’t need to
go out and purchase a bunch of
exotic ingredients that might intimidate you,” he said.

The Eagles Fall Short to River Ridge
By: Samantha Schult
Editor: Carly Kolze
6/4/15
Edited By: Carly Kolze
On Thursday the Lady Eagles traveled to River Ridge to take on the Wolves. It was a great night
to play softball and the Eagles started the game off
right. River Ridge did take a quick jump on the Eagles
in the second inning scoring two runs, but the Eagles
were not giving up. The bats started to heat up and
the Eagles scored three runs in the fifth inning. The
Eagles had the lead going into the seventh inning up
by one run; all the Eagles had to do was get three fast
outs. The Eagles had no outs with a runner on third
and a Wolf hit a hard ball to the outfield which ended up dropping and the Wolves were able to score
two runs taking the game home with them. Good
luck to the Lady Eagles in the upcoming post season.

School Golf team traveled to Platteville to compete at the SWAL Meet. With a team score of 380,
Barneveld placed six out of eight teams. Seth Adelman and Matthew Myers lead the team with a score
of 90, followed by Lucas Evans with a total of 94,
and Connor Carden with an overall of 100. When
asked about the conference, Lucas Evans said, “We
had to battle through a cold start on a tough golf
course.” Good job guys and good luck in the future!

Memorial Day at the Legion Hall
By: Kassy Bauman
Edited by: Maggie Oimoen
Last Monday, May 25th, on Memorial Day,
the Legion Auxiliary held a memorial service to remember and appreciate all of the soldiers who have
served in our military. The High School band started
off by playing “The Blue and the Gray” followed by
Natalie Elfering singing the solo, “Military Medley.”
Bob Fitzsimmons gave the Memorial Day address
and told the history of Memorial Day and the representation the poppy gave to all the soldiers we
have lost over the years. Then, after Natalie sang
another beautiful solo, “God Bless America,” the
Legion Chaplain led the crowd in a prayer for all
those who have risked their lives for our country.
Finally, the Middle School Chorus sang, “You Are
Our Heroes” to end the program. Also, thank you
to Brian and Matthew Hugill for doing an excellent
job at playing the Taps for the final salute to our soldiers who have already passed. Excellent job, High
School and Middle School students who performed,
and thank you to all of our servicemen and women
who have risked so much for our beautiful country!
The Eagles Fall
By: Amanda Roberts
Edited by: Carly Kolze
The Lady Eagles first playoff game was away
against the Argyle Orioles. The Eagles had a tough
start with the Orioles scoring five runs in the fourth
inning and the Eagles were able to answer right back
with two runs scored in the fourth and four runs
scored in the fifth, to put the Lady Eagles ahead, 6 to
5. Yet, the next inning the Orioles had solid hits that
our Lady Eagles were not able to make a solid play on,
which allowed Argyle to score three more runs and
they were able to defeat the Lady Eagles. We would
like to thank the graduating players, the first basemen and fourth batter #15 Samantha Schult, the third
baseman, the pitcher, and the third batter #25 Amanda Roberts, and the left fielder who batted seventh
#8 Elizabeth Skaife. The team hopes all your dreams
come true and your future is full of achievement.
Senior Wes Williams checking the sign.
The Class of 2015 would like to thank the
members of the school board and Mr. Knudson for providing transportation for our senior
class trip to Minneapolis. Special thanks to
Tammy Zander for driving the bus for us! We
had a fun time spending a final weekend together with our class.
Cassville Collapse
By: Wes Williams
Edited By: Carly Kolze
The Eagles traveled to Cassville for a double-header trying to keep their chance at conference
possible, needing to win out the final five games.
The first game of the double-header was a chess
match between the pitchers, Cole Breuer allowed
just one hit, but the Eagles only managed to get four
of their own. Two of the hits came in the first with
lead off singles by Colton Sullivan and Brycen Sorensen, bases got loaded when Nate Francque got
hit-by-pitch. The inning ended with two fly balls and
Sullivan getting thrown out at home trying to tag up.
Samuel Shatrawka had a single in the fourth inning,
and Cole Breuer added the last hit in the sixth inning. The lone run for Cassville came off of a throwing error in the fourth inning, final score Cassville
1, Barneveld 0. The second game of the night was
also a pitchers duo, Cassville allowed four hits, Williams allowed just two hits. The offense started off
quick with Sullivan getting a leadoff single, but no
runs scored. The second inning Trevor Siegenthaler
walked, but got out by a fielder’s choice play. Williams followed with a single to put two runners on.
The Eagles finally got a run across in the fourth inning as Shatrawka scored off of an error. The Eagles
scored again in the sixth inning as Sorensen tagged
up off of a sac fly by Breuer. The Eagles two runs fell
short as the final score was Cassville 4, Barneveld 2.
Yearbooks were handed out Wednesday,

On May 19, at 7:00 pm, the elementary (3rd,
4 , and 5th) performed a wonderful spring concert and
art show. With their wonderful pictures and colorful
paintings hung up everywhere, it was a beautiful sight.
The fifth grade band opened up the night playing their
songs: “In the Calm of the Starry Sky,” “The Bermuda
Triangle,” and “Our Tumultuous, Trustworthy and
Terrific Trumpets.” Next came the third grade who
sang “Make a Rainbow,” “Los Colores De La Vida,”
and “The Color of Music.” The fourth grade also
sang three wonderful songs as well. “Blue Suede
Shoes,” “The Rainbow Connection,” and “When Love
Blooms.” Singing “What a Wonderful World,” “There
Must Be a Rainbow,” and “Colors of the Wind,”
was the fifth grade class. The concert ended with a
beautiful performance from all of the elementary

First Grade also had four songs. They sang “Green,
Green, Green,” “The Hawaiian Rainbow,” “The
Colors of My Dreams,” and “Rainbow Rock.”
The 2nd grade also gave a wonderful performance
with their songs “Sing a Rainbow,” “Zip-a-DeeDoo-Dah,” “If I Could Catch a Rainbow,” and
“Ribbons in the Sky.” The Grand Finale ended
the night with a combined song from all four
classes with the song “When Love Blooms.”
Great job to all of the students who participated

Capitol Conference Championship
By: Nate Francque
Edited by: Carly Kolze
Tuesday night was a big one for the Wisconsin
Heights/Barneveld Vanguards as they traveled to
Belleville for the conference track meet along with
11 other teams. Kelsee Fargo had a noteworthy
night, taking fifth place in the Girls 800 Meter Dash
and eighth place in the Girls 100 Meter Dash. The
girls relay teams didn’t have a terrible night either as
they took seventh in the 100, eighth in the 200, 10th
in the 400, and fifth in the 800. Lastly, Abigail Bahr
placed 18th in the Girls Triple Jump—contributing to
the girl’s overall fifth place in Belleville. On the other
side of things, Jack Hazen took 19th in the Boys 300
Meter Hurdle. The boys went home after placing
eighth at the Capitol Conference Championship,
which wasn’t exactly what they were aiming for. The
Vanguards will now set their sights on Regionals.
I believe we are all excited to see what they can do!
Last Tuesday, May 12th, the boys battled
against Pecatonica at home in a close but exciting
baseball game. Pec started off in the lead with one
point in the first inning and scoring a whopping
4 more in the fifth inning, but Barneveld leaped
ahead in the sixth inning by scoring five points. The
leading scorer was Trey Laube by making it home
three times during this game. The boys ended up
pulling through and winning 10 to 9. Great job, boys,
and good luck to you on the rest of your season!

The Eagles gave the Ponies a hard battle
By: Amanda Roberts
Edited by: Carly Kolze
The Barneveld Lady Eagles went to Monticello
on Tuesday to play a double header. The Eagles started
off hitting well and scored one run in the second
inning. The Monticello ponies scored two runs early in
the game and the Eagles were able to hold them with
solid defense and Amanda Roberts on the Mound. Yet
the Lady Eagles were not able to score another run,
losing 2 to 1 in the first game. The second game the
Lady Eagles were the home team and Mattie Schave
was on the mound. The lady Eagles had a tough
offensive game and were not able to keep the hits going
to score a run. The Ponies reacted and hit the ball in the
gaps, being able to score five runs. Both games were
a tough battle, but the Lady Eagles couldn’t find the
runs and Taylor Owens was four for six with the bat.
This picture shows the entire 5th grade class
graduating from the D.A.R.E program.
Last Friday, May 15th, the Wisconsin
Heights/Barneveld Track and Field team travelled
to Boscobel to compete. Abigail Bahr and Kelsee
Fargo ran the triple jump. Abigail accomplished a
distance of 23-11.50, and Kelsee accomplished a
distance of 31-02.25. Nice job to both girls! Kelsee
also participated in the long jump and scored a
distance of 14-3.00. Courtney Skaife, Abigail Bahr,
and Kelsee Fargo worked together as a team in the
4X400 and received a time of 4:33.09. These three
girls also did the 4X800 and received an amazing
time of 10:55.32! Grace Schutz participated in the
4X200 with three other girls from Heights and
they received the time of 1:53.11. Grace also did
the 100 meter dash and received the time of 14.58.
Great job to all the girls in track and field and
good luck to all of you in the rest of your season!

The Eagles Shut Black Hawk Down
By: Samantha Schult
Edited By: Carly Kolze
On Monday night the lady Eagles took on the
Black Hawk Warriors, it was a chilly senior night which
did not stop the Eagles. In the first inning the Eagles
got a quick jump, but not the jump they wanted. The
small jump led to a bigger jump. The Eagles defense
was tight on Monday night as well, so the Warriors
could not keep up with the Eagles hot bats. In the
sixth inning the Eagles had a big rally scoring five runs
making the score 7-0 going into the seventh inning.
The Eagles took the field one last time and shut the
Warriors down. Thank you to the seniors Liz Skaife,
Samantha Schult, and Amanda Roberts and good
luck to the lady Eagles in the upcoming tournament!
Yearbooks were handed out

The Eagles played the Warriors at home
Monday night for a crucial conference game, Samuel
Shatrawka had mound duty and pitched a great first
half of the game allowing just one hit and a lone run in
the third inning. Cole Breuer took the mound next and
shut down the Warriors offense allowing a run in the
seventh inning. Shatrawka and Breuer combined for
seven strikeouts and three walks on the night pitching.
The Eagles batting started off slow putting a lone
run on the board in the first inning of off a single by
Nate Francque, Sorensen scored on the play. The third
inning started with a single by Colton Sullivan who
ended up stealing second base and reaching third on a
throwing error. The next pitch got past the catcher and
Sullivan was able to score on the passed ball. Francque
and Breuer both walked and advanced bases on a
passed ball. Shatrawka singled in Francque and Breuer
to bring the score to 4-1. The Eagles added six more
runs in the fifth inning off of a three straight singles
by Sullivan, Sorensen, and Trevor Siegenthaler; three
walked batters and two HBP’s later the Eagles had a
10-2 lead. The game ended Eagles 10 to Warriors 2.

Wildlife Babies Grow Up Quickly
Friends of the Military Ridge
Trail invite you to use and
Spring, May and June, is a time den tree, they get separated from time enjoy the trail!
when many animals are born or
hatch. Most of these forms are especially cute, even beautiful, in part because they are miniatures of the adult
forms. They also represent newness.
They grow quickly into the forms we
recognize as the adult raccoons, deer,
and Bluebirds.
Baby Bluebirds, often four, become more and more crowded in
nest boxes that have been their entire
home for about a month after the hen
laid them as eggs.
Cub raccoons are especially
cute, but can be as dangerous as a kitten who has never smelled a person.
While they stay with their mother or
their siblings for a time after leaving a
to time and all too often find roads
particularly easy terrain to travel.
Fawns of white-tailed deer grow
fast, too. It is the tawny color of their
first coat, along with the pure white
spots that attribute much beauty to
their early life.
The trail is great for running, walking, skiing, rollerblading, and biking. It is a
healthy and safe avenue for children to access
playgrounds, schools, and libraries in your
community. The Military Ridge Trail runs
approximately 36 miles. It connects the villages of Dodgeville, Ridgeway, Barneveld, Blue
Mounds,
Mt. Horeb, Klevenville, Riley, Verona, and Madison. In addition, two State
Parks—Blue Mound State Park and Governor
Dodge State Park—are accessed via the Military Ridge Trail. Both are highly rated state
parks which have camping, swimming, biking,
hiking, and ski trails.
Madison is also the hub for city,
county, Badger State Trail, and Glacial Drumlin State Trail.
A trail pass is required for everyone
over the age of 16 to bicycle and rollerblade on
the trail. Walking,
running, and skiing is no cost on the Military
Ridge State Trail. A trail pass is good from January 1 to December 31 of the year purchased
and is good on all state trails, many state park
trails, as well as the Madison Capital City Trail.
A portion of the fee for every trail pass, sold
by our local business vendors, goes to Friends
projects that enhance the Military Ridge Trail.
You can purchase your trail pass at a
local business and benefit the business as well.
These are our vendors in the Barneveld area:
People’s Community Bank, Blue Mounds Grocery, and Badger Mart.
Our state is blessed with a plethora of
parks and trails. Indeed, Wisconsin is ranked
third in the nation for bicycling! For more information check the DNR website and search
for state trails or trail pass. If you would like
to attend our meetings, make a comment, or
join the Friends of the Military Ridge Trail,
call 608-437-7393 (Ext 2) and leave a message.
A volunteer will call you back. Our website is
still a work in progress but you can email us at
