Let’s start with host plants. These
plants, usually native to our area,
are those that the adult butterflies
visit to lay eggs on and are often
butterfly-specific. Having host
plants in your garden ensures that
the butterflies will linger for longer periods of time. The caterpillars will stay as well. Remember
that once those eggs hatch, the caterpillars will be munching. Don’t
be too worried about it. Healthy
plants will not be damaged. A few
of the most common host perennials for Dane county gardens are
Butterfly Weed (Asclepias) for
Monarchs, Asters to attract Pearl
Crescents and Hollyhock (Alcea)
to feed Painted Ladies. And we’d
be remiss if we didn’t mention the
annual Bronze Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), an absolute magnet
for Tiger Swallowtails.
Be sure to supply plenty of nectar-rich, flowering plants for the
adults to feed on. Butterflies are
attracted to flowers by color, so
plant in masses of single colors,
rather than complicated mixes.
And try to provide a continuous
bloom through the growing season. Butterflies are in our area
from mid-spring to late fall, but
are most active from early summer to early autumn. There are
many choices, but a few favorites
are Garden Phlox, Butterflybush
(Buddleja), Asters, Coneflowers
(Echinacea) in tones of pink and
purple, Salvia and Joe Pye Weed
(Eupatorium).
Finally,
you’ll
want to include
some
shallow
watering spots
and a few sheltered, shady areas. These provide
moisture
and protection
from
weather
and predators.

Colorful birds are relatively easy to identify, but brown, drab birds
are not so easily put into an appropriate flock. And when one member, the male, has lots of color markers we think of the species by
the male’s appearance. The red-winged blackbird is one such bird.
Almost everyone recognizes this male. He’s black, as his name states.
And he has yellow and red shoulder patches, in other words, red on
his wings. The female has none of those unmistakable markings.
She’s anything but colorful. But even with her brownish plumage,
there are two features that help connect her to her male mate. Her bill
is sharp-pointed. And like her mate, she’s quite gregarious at times.
So when a brownish bird, with a very sharp bill hangs out with a
red-winged blackbird and matches his bill, she’s the other half. She’s
the female red-winged blackbird, even though she has no red and
no black.

SNAPPING TURTLES
Snapping turtles are the largest and heaviest of all Wisconsin’ turtles.
The females are commonly seen at this time, as they cross roads or
crawl across fields in search of areas to lay their eggs in light soil.
Snappers can be aggressive when they are approached on land while
traveling from pond to pond or to lay eggs. Many snappers fall
victim to vehicular traffic. These large animals consume plant and
animal material, sometimes preying on other animals, other times
scavenging food. Small fishes, young waterfowl, and dead fish are
easy meals for this aquatic organism. In some areas, snappers are taken as a delicacy. They are said to have seven different types of meat.
Check state regulations before taking a snapper, or any other turtle,
as a source of meat.

THE RECIPE BOX
Banana Split Trifle
• 1 package instant banana pudding (5.1 oz size)
• 3 c. of milk (for pudding)
• 1 c. heavy cream
• 1 tbsp. powdered sugar
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
• 1 box vanilla wafers
• 2 c. chopped pineapple
• 4 bananas, sliced
• 1 pint strawberries, sliced
• juice of one lemon
• chocolate syrup
• chopped nuts
• maraschino cherries
Directions
1. Prepare pudding as directed on package, and sit in fridge to chill and
firm.
2. In a medium bowl, beat cream, just until stiff peak are about to form.
3. Beat in your powdered sugar, and extract of choice, until stiff peaks
do form. Make sure not to over beat, or you will end up with very sweet
butter.
4. Set in fridge until you are ready to assemble.
5. To keep your sliced bananas from browning, set them in a shallow
dish and drizzle with lemon juice.
6. In a trifle bowl, arrange your wafers along the bottom. Top with about
1 cup of pineapple, half of your sliced bananas, half the strawberries,
and half of the pudding. Repeat these steps again, beginning with wafers and ending with pudding. Save a few strawberries for garnish.
7. Spoon your whipped cream on top of the pudding and gently spread
it around. Drizzle with chocolate syrup. Top with chopped nuts and several maraschino cherries.

Kids and Competitive Sports:
Too Much Pressure?

A child playing any sport that includes uniforms, umpires,
coaches, players and parents will often sense an intense need
that they succeed from the adults around them. That intense
pressure contains all the elements that can cause eventual
failure.
This is particularly true with baseball. A round bat used to
hit a round ball often traveling at a great speed is a sport built
for a child’s failure. A professional player who successfully
hits one out of every three pitches over the course of a career
could end up in the Baseball Hall of Fame!
Organized sports places such a high level of stress on kids
that many children simply give up most competitive sports
by age 12. However, a large number of children will still place
themselves in competitive situations, regardless of the potential degree of failure, causing much distress for parent and
child alike.
As a child, I had the best of both worlds when it came to
sports and competition. First, my parents were mainly concerned with my having fun with my chosen sport, baseball.
Secondly, where I grew up, our initial exposure to sports was
sandlot baseball, which consisted of a grassy field where all
the neighborhood kids would go to play a baseball game, often lasting for hours on end. There were no parents, umpires,
uniforms or coaches. Any disagreement was quickly solved
by the rock, paper, and scissor method. Finally, our trophy
was simply the fun of playing the game. Interestingly, myself
and two other sandlot players went on to play college ball
and one even signed to play minor league ball.

Recently, I observed an 11-year-old child on TV who was
at bat in a very intense Little League World Series game. He
struck out before 10,000 screaming fans, ending the game
and causing his team’s elimination. The child broke down
in tears. Like most children at this age, I would have given
my right arm to play in a Little League World Series game,
regardless of the level of success or failure. But who knows
what stress that situation caused on that child and his future
willingness to play competitive sports.

My suggestion to parents of children dealing with competition is that they read John Wooden’s book, Game Plan For
Life. John Wooden was the highly successful UCLA basketball coach (he won ten NCAA basketball championships in
12 years) who believed that winning and losing, although
important, should be secondary to skill and character development. For example, instead of first asking your child “Did
you win or lose the game?” we might ask, “Did you improve
with your passing or dribbling skills?” Or, “What did you
learn from the game — and above all, did you have fun?”

Gnats By Any Name Are Annoying

There are few outdoors experiences more
frustrating than being
surrounded by a cloud of
black flies, a.k.a. buffalo
gnats or turkey gnats.
While many species
do not bite humans, most
of them certainly bother the heck out of us by
just buzzing our faces and
landing on our ears. A few
bite, too. Some even fly
into our ears and noses.
Worse, black flies
bite lots of other animals,
including birds and deer.
Bluebird mortality from
black fly bites and blood
meals has been documented to be over 90 percent
along some bluebird trails
(lanes with lots of nest
boxes).
While many insects fly relatively short
distances from their hatch
locations, black flies are
often blown many miles
from big running waters,
such as the Wisconsin and
Mississippi rivers. Just because one lives miles from
a source of moving water
does not mean you are safe
from a black fly invasion.
Two-to-three weeks
after a hatch, all should be
quiet and we’re nearing
that point. However there
can be more than one black
fly hatch in some parts of
Wisconsin. In addition,
there are many species of
this insect, most of which
hatch at slightly different
times. That explains why
black flies seem to bother
us for longer periods some
years.
Bluebirds, and other
box-nesting species, may
be afforded some protection by building houses
that have a single opening
and no other locations
where light can get in the
box.
Black flies may be deterred from entering some
nest boxes by using an in-
secticide, too, but many
chemicals have probably
not been registered for
such purpose. Regardless, the pesticide is likely
to break down after 7-10
days.
Similarly, some repellents, such as those with
at least 20 percent of the
active ingredient, are likely to help us live through
the several weeks of the
gnats swarm stages. Re-
pellents, and clothing covering most bare skin, can
go a long way in providing
us with a somewhat insect-free outing.
But there is often
another insect lurking to
fill the summer air.
Some home remedies provide some relief,
too, but all insects seem to
be selective as to whom to
call on next. Some people
are rarely bothered, others
have to swat frequently.

BIRD TIP:
Hummingbirds are actively feeding in backyard
gardens right now. Did you know these birds lap
nectar from flowers and feeders with very long
tongues, approximately 13 licks per second. Various flower colors attract hummingbirds, such
as red, blue, yellow, and white. Include a variety
of annuals and perennials for nectar availability
throughout the season. Hummers also feed on
small insects and spiders as part of their diet. Remember to keep nectar feeders clean and filled to
provide food if flowers are not plentiful.
