NATURALLY SPEAKING
By Jerry Davis
Pheasant back mushrooms, bracket polypores growing out of the sides of an elm
stumps or logs, have been called
a morel hunter’s backup.
Pheasant backs grow
in spring, when morels should,
and in the same locations, particularly where elms have died
years earlier and morels are no longer found.
This bracket mushroom is similarly easy to identify,
abundant, and has a taste and smell like no other mushroom.
Fresh specimens scent of watermelon rind.
Taste and texture is questionable but edibility is not suspect.
Pick young, use immediately, saute or fry lightly, but do
not microwave, or they become a shoe leather substitute.
The overall color is whitish to tan-yellow. Bruising
the flesh does not produce a color change, as is common mushrooms.
The spore print, made by placing a fresh mushroom on
a sheet of paper and allowing the spores to fall out of the pores,
is most attractive with pheasant backs. Because the spores are
white, colored paper is best, the darker the better.

his week’s senior profile is Bailey Trainor.
Her favorite high school memory was
when she threw her sweatshirt in Chemistry II and accidently knocked down all of Mrs.
Roll’s Christmas lights that were hanging from
the ceiling. Her favorite thing about high school
was being able to laugh and hang out with her
friends all day, every day. Bailey plans on attending UW-River Falls with a major in Animal Science. She hopes to become a large animal veterinarian and own one hundred and forty-three
animals some day. All of Barneveld High School

Cody Westphal is a senior at Barneveld this year.
He likes to spend his time running, biking, and
solving puzzles. His favorite part of high school
has been taking engineering classes with Mr.
Elfering, and his favorite high school memory
was the Band and Choir Trip to New York this
last Spring Break. When Cody isn’t at school, he
spends his time as a Bagger/Carry-out worker at
Miller and Sons in Mt. Horeb. After high school,
Cody plans on attending UW-Stout, and is currently going in as undecided. All of Barneveld High
School wishes Cody the best of luck in his future.

Upland Hills Health Welcomes New OB/GYN
[Dodgeville] Dr. Timothy Raichle, OB/GYN has joined the
Women’s Health team at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville and
will begin welcoming patients May 24.
With the addition of Dr. Raichle, Upland Hills Health (UHH) has
three OB/GYNs on its team of women’s health providers, each
with an extraordinary level of skill and experience. Dr. Raichle
joins OB/GYN, Dr. Barbara Hostetler who has practiced at UHH
since 2008 and Dr. Maria Sandgren, OB/GYN who joined the
group in 2015.
Dr. Raichle (pronounced Rā-kl) earned his Doctorate of Medicine
from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO.
He completed is residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at
the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, WI.
There, he was recognized for his teaching abilities and served as
the Chief Resident of the OB/GYN program during his senior year
of training. Dr. Raichle also holds a graduate degree in Biology
and undergraduate degree in Psychology. He is licensed in
Medicine & Surgery by the State of Wisconsin, an American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology
Fellow. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a current
member of the Wisconsin Medical Society.
Starting out in Appleton, WI, Dr. Raichle launched his practice at Affinity Medical Group. During his
four years in the Fox River Valley he was honored as the Fox Cities Health Center Volunteer of the Year.
He returned to the Madison area and for the past seven years has practiced at Melius, Schurr & Cardwell,
LLP, (currently Physicians for Women, LLP), a single-specialty OB/GYN clinic in Fitchburg, WI.
Raichle said he enjoys taking the time to get to know patients and their families and stated, "Whether we
like it or not, the experience of the patient is changing rapidly and at risk of becoming more
depersonalized. It is my goal to make sure that the relationship and trust between a patient and their
doctor is not degraded by these changes. I believe that the Providers at Upland Hills Health share these
values and we are a perfect match." He added, “I am excited about the opportunity to practice at Upland
Hills Health with two of my mentors, Dr. Hostetler and Dr. Sandgren.”
Dr. Raichle will see patients primarily at the Upland Hills Health OB/GYN Clinic (608.930.7115) in
Dodgeville and also at the UHH Clinic in Mount Horeb.

THE FUTURE OF BIRCH LAKE NEEDS
YOUR INPUT NOW!
Iowa County...Village Of Barneveld... My understanding is, by this time, the
Town Of Brigham & DNR Officials County will have already begun the process of procuring grant monies from the
Meet Regarding Plan Of Birch Lake
On May 10th a meeting at the Barneveld
Village/Township Hall was held to discuss
plans for the future of Birch Lake. The
Iowa County Chair, the Barneveld Village
Chair, the Township of Brigham Chair
were in attendance to discuss the the options and proposals for Birch Lake.
As a result of talking to many people
and organizations in our community regarding Birch Lakes future, I presented a
framework for what I called "THE PEOPLE`S PLAN”. Its goal would be to clean
up the boat launching area, control the
weed growth in the lake, restore the beach,
construct a walkway through the estuary
to aid students from our school in their
nature studies and adults alike to view
the plants and wildlife that live and grow
there, and finally make long term plans
for lake sediment removal. I question if
sediment removal should now be an immediate issue. The last study by the NRCS
found the average sediment level in the
lake to average 1.8 feet, with most being
in the estuary where the water from the
stream enters the lake and to contain no
toxic materials. Also the lake depth is 15
feet near the dam and supports an excellent population of fish.
The DNR stated there is funding to remove
the dam, but none to remove the sediment.
No discussion on what other options or
funding may be available for sediment removal, and it was referred the responsibility of lake salvation and sediment removal
to the people they serve and set a timeline
of February 17, 2017 for them to produce
a plan with approved financial backing to
restore Birch Lake.
DNR to remove the lake, even if the People would be successful in their attempt to
formula a plan and secure necessary funding. There is no guarantee that they would
approve it. The County may still chose to
receive grant monies to remove the lake.
If the lake is lost, along with it goes all
that it offers. No swimming for kids on a
hot summer day, no boating or fishing for
bluegills, crappies, bass, or northern pike,
no estuary walkway, or a simple body of
water to view or have an attachment to.
What would replace the lake would be a
short length of stream which may support
a handful of trout, for which you would
need a trout stamp for fishing, can only use
artificial bait and if you are lucky enough
to catch a trout you may not be able to
keep it for regulations may require that
you return it to the stream. Keep in mind,
the road which leads to the lake and the
groomed grass expanse near the lake that
the Village so nicely maintains will also
disappear. The DNR, no doubt, without
the lake, will not allow existence or maintenance of either. If this area, including
what the lake covers now, is maintained as
the DNR stream and property just a short
distance down the valley, it will in time be
filled with weeds, brush, and a variety of
small trees.
So what is going to be the response of the
People to their leadership?
How much value do we put on saving the
lake? We need your input.

Meeting to discuss the Future of Birch Lake and Trout Creek
May 10, 2016 (approved meeting minutes)
Attendees: Jim McCaulley, Rob Hemling - Iowa County Land Conservation
Department; John Meyers, Dave Gollon,
Dan Nankee - Iowa County Board; Doug
Carden - Friends of Birch Lake; Jim Owens, Mike Peterson, Scott Leahy - Village
of Barneveld; Jason Carden - Town of
Brigham; - NRCS; Dave Rowe, Dave Borsecnik - DNR
by County seemed to have inflated dam
removal costs. They did not feel a coffer
dam was required ($382,000) and the
stream restoration ($412,500) would likely be done by the DNR outside the scope
of the project. Also, the DNR discussed
the possible improvement of Twin Parks
Dam #8 to become a fish barrier. The
stream above that dry dam will be have
extensive improvements made to turn it
into a Brook trout fishery.
The following general items were discussed:
4) Dave Gollon said that Iowa County
is trying to get out of the dam business.
They feel they have liability in owning
dams. They do not have funds to keep
maintaining these dams nor do they have
funds to improve the lake. He said that
Birch Lake is the only “High Hazard” dam
they own.
1) The Village will be requesting a “Release of Easement” from the County to
the Village for the area of the park south
of the Birch Lake ‘pooling area’. The ‘pooling area’ is defined as the land that ‘could’
be flooded if the water rose to the top of
the dam.
2) The Village will not be taking over the
boat landing, the associated parking area,
or any areas near the lake (in the pooling
area). The future of the boat landing, and
who will maintain it, will be determined
by what happens to the lake. The various
parties will need to work out the details as
things develop.
5) Doug Carden, representing people
wanting to save the lake, expressed his interest in keeping Birch Lake and possibly
improving it by adding a boardwalk over
the marshy area, improving the beach area
for swimming, possibly dredging the lake,
and weed cutting in the lake. The Village
and Town both said that if the Friends
group can come up with a good plan and
solid financial backing, they expect that
both groups would likely support it.
3) The DNR explained that from a trout
fishery standpoint, Birch Lake is negatively impacting the stream. Also, they
feel that the latest study commissioned
6) The DNR stated that dredging and oth-
er lake improvement activities will need a
permit from them. They are ‘permitable’
activities, but the DNR was not aware of
any grant funds available for those types
of improvements. The DNR explained
that there are funds available from Trout
Unlimited and US Fish and Wildlife Service for stream restoration activities. The
DNR could not guarantee that trout will
thrive in a revitalized Trout Creek, but the
quality and quantity of fresh water flowing in the stream indicate that it should be
a very good trout fishery if the lake were
removed.
this request.
In the end, the following schedule was developed:
May 2017: The Friends group will present their plan and funding sources to the
County.
May 2016 to February 2017: Doug Carden
and the Friends of Birch Lake are given
the first opportunity to keep and improve
Birch Lake. The Friends group needs to
prepare a plan for what improvements
could be made and detailed estimates of
the associated costs. Included in the plan
must be details about funding sources.
Included in these estimates should be improvements and ongoing maintenance of
the boat landing and associated park area.
June 2016: The Village and County will
submit letters to the DNR to request
Modification of the easements. The Town
was asked to submit a letter supporting
December 2016: The County most likely will apply for a Rivers Planning Grant
($10,000 maximum) to commission another study of Birch Lake. This study
would be to compile more accurate estimates of the different options to remove
the lake, change it into a dry dam, etc.
February 2017: The Friends group will
start presenting their plan and funding
sources to the Village and Town to request
their support.
July 2017: The County will have reviewed the Friends group plan and will
decide whether or not to go forward with
the Friends Group plan for the lake. The
County could also look at other options
for Birch Lake and the dam. One Options
would be to apply for a DNR dam removal grant, this could result in there being a
dry dam or a dam removal. This has NOT
been determined at this time.
December 2017: County may apply for
the DNR dam removal grant

A common excuse from small business owners is
“The BIG businesses can afford to advertise, but we’re
just a small company. Sure, some of these big businesses started out with large investment capital, but
consider this perspective—Perhaps they were small,
gained momentum, and continued to grow because
they understood the importance of and utilized their
advertising. They out-advertised their competition in
order to gain their position, and then have continued
to advertise to maintain that position.

Local Nurse Honored for “Attitude”
[Dodgeville] Katherine (Kathy) Honerbaum, nurse in the
Emergency Department at Upland Hills Health was recently
presented with the Lisa Faherty-Bilse Memorial “Attitude is
Everything” Motivational Nursing Award. This award is
presented to an Upland Hills Health nurse who best exemplifies
the traits that the award celebrates about Lisa’s life and her
contributions to Upland Hills Health.
The award literally came as a surprise to Honorbaum. On May
19, co-workers in the Emergency Department at Upland Hills
Health created a scheme to lead Honorbaum to believe she was
entering a room to treat a patient. Instead the room was filled
with family and co-workers who had arrived to witness the
presentation of the award.
Honorbaum was nominated by co-workers and Emergency
Department Director, Patty Hinderman, who stated that “Kathy
personifies the words “care giver.” When she steps into a room
to perform her duties, her patients are at once reassured about
any condition they may be facing. She has an attitude of
friendliness, compassion, loyalty and professionalism that is
second to none.” Honorbaum’s nursing career spans 50 years and
her work has included: pharmacy resource nurse, private care
nurse, clinic nurse, hospice and home care nurse, the Director of
the Dean Perfusion Center, oncology clinic nurse, emergency and
most recently she serves as nurse for the newly created Perfusion
and Infusion Center at Upland Hills Health. [Hinderman and
Honerbaum, pictured here.]
Lynn Hebgen, Vice President of Nursing was on hand to announce the award and noted that Honorbaum has served
multiple generations and is as comfortable caring for a newborn as she is with elderly patients. She is a highly
respected and recognizable face within the community. She diligently maintains licensure in all areas of nursing
pertinent to the Infusion Center and Emergency Department, including ACLS, BLS, TNCC, PALS to name a few of
her many certifications.
Honerbaum also demonstrates her commitment to community through her devotion to her family, work at the local
food kitchen and her involvement in P.E.O. a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of
women. Her co-workers noted, “She truly exemplifies Lisa’s philosophy that “Attitude is Everything” because she
has the very best of attitudes. She stands out as the person who will go the extra mile for her patients, as well as the
team she is working with.”

is it worth it to advertise
in your local newspaper?
For many small businesses
that sell to consumers,
yes it is
provided you think of your local newspaper as not being
the major-metro newspaper
but the LOCAL COMMUNITY PAPER where the audience is targeted,
the ad rates lower, and the staff motivated to
place your marketing message with more
of a
personal touch.
