March 27 The Fire of His Love
Prayer for the Lenten Season
God of mystery, God of mercy, God of glory, hid in light.
Let your face shine on your people where we dwell in dark of night.
Part the clouds that keep us from you, rend the heavens and come down,
show your love at work among us, let us sing your great renown.
God of daylight and God of darkness, God of heaven and God of earth:
You are Lord of all our living, yours our tears and yours our mirth.
Hold us in the hands that made us, cradle all our hopes and fears,
let us praise and glorify you with the sum of all our years.
Holy Thursday Adoration Tour of Churches by Bus One of the great traditions of our Church is the adoration tour of churches on Holy Thursday evening. If you wish to attend you MUST fill out this reservation form, and if enough people are interested, we will make arrangements for their bus to meet us here after our service at about 8:30 PM returning to our parking lot by 10:30 PM the latest. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————— I would like to attend the Holy Thursday evening adoration tour of Churches by bus. COME, EXPERIENCE THE LABYRINTH
St. Celestine Parish, 3020 N. 76th Court, Elmwood Park, IL, invites you to discover the positive effects of walking the labyrinth to reflect, meditate and to realign your deeper self during this Lenten season. What is the labyrinth? The labyrinth is an ancient circular pattern. In its classical form, this sacred diagram consists of a single concentric circular path with no possibility of going astray. As you enter the labyrinth you will follow the path to the center and then, once you are ready, you will take it back out. The labyrinth has an equal number of right and left turns, which “invites our intuitive, pattern seeking, symbolic mind to come forth. It is a spiritual tool.” (From Walking a Sacred Path by Dr. Lauren Artess) Labyrinth Hours The labyrinth will be open during the following hours. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk. Saturday, March 31st, 3:00 PM ‐ 7:00 PM Sunday, April 1st, 9:00 AM ‐ 7:00 PM Monday, April 2nd, 3:00 ‐ 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 3rd, 3:00 ‐ 7:00 PM Wednesday, April 4th, 3:00 ‐ 7:00 PM Holy Thursday, April 5th, Noon ‐ 7:00 PM Good Friday, April 6th, 9:00 AM ‐ 9:00 PM

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
March 25, 2012
Fifth Sunday of Lent Father, Forgive Them The promise made by the LORD in the first reading is very bold: All people shall know the LORD without having to be taught by others. God doesn't restrict the promise to only the holiest people. The way people will know God is through forgiveness of their sins. Remember, God is speaking to a people who had so many laws and commandments they needed a professional class of scribes and Pharisees to keep track of them. When they broke a commandment or law, they were isolated from the community. So the promise that God would place the law in their hearts meant they would be free to do God's will because they wanted to, not because they feared punishment or rejection. March 25, 2012 Fifth Sunday of Lent Jer 31:31‐34 / Heb 5:7‐9 / Jn 12:20‐33 When my husband and I learned I was pregnant, we felt so many wonderful emotions—joy, disbelief, anticipation. It wasn’t until the nonstop nausea occurred and the endless to‐buy lists piled up that we became utterly aware of the sacrifices required. Sure, we knew about such sacrifices, but until my body and our lives began literally making room for new life, we didn’t truly comprehend what letting go meant. We were definitely dying to our previous life, like the grain of wheat that must die to produce fruit. Jesus says something similar in today's Gospel. He tells the disciples that his crucifixion will draw everyone to him. Jesus' death showed that he took on the punishment for sins in place of us who deserve it. In Luke's Gospel he even prays for those who crucified him, asking God's forgiveness for them (Luke 23:34). By dying on the cross, Jesus shows us how much God loves us. By rising from the dead, he shows us that we can rise from sin to a new life of faith and love. We experience that promise made in the first reading when we bring our sins to God. When we forgive people who have hurt us, we also help them to experience that love. After all, if I can forgive you, surely God will forgive you. We also help others to know God when we share our experience of being forgiven. Still not sure if God has forgiven you? The sacrament of reconciliation gives us the assurance of God's forgiveness as well as the experience. With the other sacraments, it helps us keep God's love in our hearts. But there are multiple experiences of dying to a familiar life that aren’t as joyful as pregnancy. There’s letting go of health and independence when aging or illness take hold. There’s adjusting to singlehood after divorce. There’s changing course when a rejection letter arrives from a university. Most often we don’t “choose to lose” our way of life—it’s chosen for us. It’s rarely easy. Today’s Gospel reveals that Jesus, too, struggled to let go of his familiar life. For him, this meant truly dying to experience eternal life. But it wasn’t easy for Jesus. We hear him say, “I am troubled now.” He talks about the dying wheat grain, perhaps not only to teach his disciples but also to reinforce to himself what he must do. Though he chooses this path freely, it’s not an easy choice. He needed courage just as we do. Even when losing our familiar life isn’t our choice, we can choose as Jesus chose—and trust that God has new life waiting for us beyond every death. It may not be what we planned, but it’s what God has planned. Our trust is grounded in Jesus—who felt what we feel and who waits to share with us new life he has experienced. Janel Esker
I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. ‐‐Jeremiah 31:33 I am God's wheat; I am ground by the teeth of the wild beasts that I may end as the pure bread of Christ.
