SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
GOLDEN
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
CELEBRATION
April 15, 2012
He had to rise from the dead.
Joe, a Vietnam veteran, struggled most of his post service life with addiction. Estranged from his family, he found himself living under a bridge in very poor health. After landing in an emergency room, he came to Catholic Charities. Moving into a private room at Cooke’s Manor, he began a journey of recovery with a good VA doctor, a Catholic Charities chaplain and an AA sponsor. Family reconciliation followed, and he spent his first Easter with his family in 20 years. A special Mass for couples of the Archdiocese who are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2012 will be held on: Sunday, September 23, 2012 2:30 PM Holy Name Cathedral 735 N. State Street, Chicago, IL Couples married in 1962 who are interested in attending this celebration are asked to contact the rectory office, (708) 456‐9000, to register.
Your gift to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day, May 13, will bring new life. It is never too late for lives to transform. For further information, please call the Family Ministries Office at (312) 534‐8351 or visit the website: www.familyministries.org.

Sunday of the Divine Mercy It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John's Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so "that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name" (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that "[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God" (5:1)‐‐what we might refer to as being "born again." Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. BORN AGAIN Today was once called in Latin "Dominica in albis," or "Sunday in White," because the church was full of newly baptized Christians wearing their white baptismal garments. Another old title, best forgotten, is "Low Sunday." There's nothing low about this festive Sunday in Easter, the eighth day since the first "Alleluia" rang out. In Christian tradition, the number eight is a symbol of fulfillment, transition, breaking through the seven‐day rhythm of life to a new way of being. That is why many baptismal fonts have eight sides. The greatest feasts of our calendar are always extended for eight days, called an "octave." In a way, this means that this first week of Easter is really considered to be one great day. This octave day of Easter sees the best features of Easter still vibrant: joyful alleluias, lush spring flowers everywhere, sprinkling with water, and a lavish table where the Lord gives us himself as bread and wine. New life begins with conception in the womb and the "water and blood" of childbirth. A baby is born, perfectly trusting and pure, unencumbered by the accumulated wealth, self‐importance, and indebtedness of adults. This is the image we use to describe new Christians. They are neophytes, or "new shoots," born again from the tree of the cross. They receive new life when they "believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God." ‐‐James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. This new life is what John wants for all the readers of his Gospel. Today we hear that Jesus appeared to the disciples on Easter Sunday evening and again a week later. John wants everyone to believe that the Lord lived beyond death, not leaving behind his human body and experiences. He also wishes us to realize that Christ gives believers new life through the gift of his very own divine Spirit. Jesus gave the community of disciples new "life in his name" by breathing his Spirit into his frightened followers to fill them with peace and enable them to forgive sins. "BEGOTTEN BY GOD" ALVERNIA ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION The Alvernia Alumnae Association will be holding its 20th Annual Luncheon on Sunday, April 22, 2012. The Alvernia Alumnae Association is open to everyone who attended, taught, worked at, or was otherwise affiliated with Alvernia High School in Chicago. The Association’s mission is fundraising for the School Sisters of St. Francis; over $20,000 was raised last year for the School Sisters’ retirement fund. Attendance at the luncheon is by reservation only. For more information on attending the 2012 luncheon, please see our website at www.alverniaalumnae.org for a printable reservation form or call Kathy Bunce at (708) 442‐1479. As the reading from the Letter of John indicates, those who are newly "begotten by God" through faith will love all the children of God. When Christ breathes his new life into us, the whole community of Christians is born again through the Spirit, who unites us in making Christ's love and forgiveness present in the world. Our first reading describes such a community that has been born again with the life of Christ. Unlike ordinary communities, these neophytes willingly submit to one another's leadership, give their possessions to those in need, forgive one another, and forget any social stigmas that had previously divided them. In short, they "are of one heart and mind" (Acts 4:32) and "love the children of God" (1 John 5:2). Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Page Five
SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 15, 2012
Second Sunday of Easter John 20:19‐31 Thomas said, “You are my Lord and my God.” Jesus replied: “You believe because you see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” I imagine this scene between Jesus and Thomas as very tender. I don’t think that Jesus was angry, just bemused by this apostle who needed proof‐even after all he had witnessed. Thomas has often been called the patron saint of doubters and most of us can identify with him. We want proof; we want signs, and most of all we want God to do what we want done. Even those newly baptized or recently received into the church can identify with Thomas. To doubt is human but to hold fast to our faith in spite of doubts is to win Jesus’ praise: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Silent Reflection Reflect for a few moments in silence now about a time you may have doubted that Jesus was walking with you. Intercessions Forgive me for ever doubting your love, Jesus… Help me to be a good model of faith for my family in these ways… I pray now for my brothers ad sisters in the country of... Prayer Loving God, thank you for calling me to faith. Thank you for the gift of Jesus who walks with me, whether I “see” him or not. Help my faith to deepen, and when I have doubts, help me to believe that Jesus understands and perhaps even smiles at me. Keep your guiding hand on me this day. Amen. April 15, 2012 Second Sunday of Easter / Sunday of Divine Mercy Acts 4:32‐35 / 1 John 5:1‐6 / John 20:19‐31 I was the “jock” in my family growing up. I remember being very proud of the scrapes, scratches, and particularly colorful bruises I gained from tumbles and falls while playing sports. Sometimes my teammates and I would compare wounds to see whose was the ugliest...and hence, the coolest! For children, scars and wounds can be something to show off, while adults tend to hide their stretch marks, surgical scars, and bruised skin—often, I think, to appear strong and less vulnerable. We wouldn't want to appear weak or broken, would we? However, in today’s Gospel reading, one of the first things Jesus does upon appearing to the disciples after his resurrection is show them the wounds in his hands and his sides. This, of course, was a way to prove he was really Jesus—the one they saw crucified just three days earlier. But it’s significant that even in his glorified, risen body, Jesus still had his wounds. They didn’t magically disappear. He didn’t try to hide them. They were part of him, even in his new, resurrected life. Only a week after the joy of Easter, it may seem strange to speak about wounds and scars. Yet we know well in our own lives that while we trust in the joy of the resurrection, we still live with broken hearts, broken relationships, and wounded souls. Just because Easter has occurred doesn’t mean our wounds have been erased. But today’s Gospel reminds us that we have a Savior who knows what it’s like to be hurt, afraid, and broken. He knows our wounds because he still has his. Because of this, he accompanies us...all the way through the cross to new resurrected life. Janel Esker
