St. René Goupil
As a young man in France,
René entered the Jesuits. He
loved the priests and brothers,
but René was sick all the time.
He had to go home. He could not
become a Jesuit priest.
René became a doctor. When
he heard about the missionaries
in North America, he went to
help them.
After two years in Canada,
René traveled with Isaac Jogues
to the land of the Huron Indians.
(Today that area is upstate New
York.) They were captured by
Iroquois. This tribe was not ready
to hear the Gospel. Some of the
braves tortured and killed Doctor
Goupil. Later they killed Isaac
Jogues also.
