February 21, 2014 P D M S S C A RIN G C O M M U N I TY N EWS Together we make a difference Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS, Kindergarten Round Up was a great success! There were so many smiles on future PDMSS students enjoying being in the classroom, marine science lab, doing an art project, and meeting their future teachers. An enormous thank you goes to Deven Shirley and everyone who volunteered their time to make Kindergarten Round Up such a special day. Thank you! Read Across America and Pajama Movie Night! Day is this Friday! On this wonderful day everyone: students, staff, and parent volunteers, come to school in their PJs, enjoy special activities, and spend the entire day reading. Get involved with the fun by checking in with your child’s room parent. There is something for everyone to do to help make this day memorable. The award-winning author René Colato Laínez is coming to PDMSS. He is a native of El Salvador (Jose’s home country) and writes delightful children’s books. On Read Across America day students will enjoy listening to Mr. Laínez read one of his stories. If you would like to order one of his books and have it autographed, please fill out the order form that’s included in the newsletter. The Marine Science Dinner at Duke’s is just one week away! There are a limited number of tickets left so be sure to purchase your ticket today. On Wednesday, February 26th, the fantastic art projects made by the students will go on display in our library. Then on Thursday you’ll have the opportunity to “buy it now”. Details about the projects and how you can purchase them will be coming to you via room parents soon. I’d like to end the newsletter with a thank you to the fifth grade and their parents for organizing Movie Night. It was a fundraiser to support the many end-of-the-year activities for the fifth grade class and they did raise around $500, but it was also a great family event! The children had fun watching the movie together, parents enjoyed the opportunity to visit with each other, and the evening was topped off with an impromptu dance party. It was great fun! Thanks! Remember my door is always open. As the LCFF is phased in, school districts must work with their communities to create Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) that define goals and improvement plans. With this in mind, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is launching an LCFF/LCAP Stakeholder Survey. Designed and administered by independent technology and communications firm K12 Insight, the survey explains LCFF/LCAP issues and asks about key topics, such as student achievement, parent involvement and school climate. This is an excellent chance for staff, parents and the community to collaborate on how to best invest resources in student achievement. Won’t you please take a few minutes to complete the survey at the link below. Responses are confidential, and results will be posted on our district’s website after March 5, 2014. Thank you. http://www.k12insight.com/k/RQsQQSYRsUsPsPsP For Immediate Release City of Malibu Launches New Citizen Notification System at malibucity.org/news (Malibu, CA) The City of Malibu announces the launch of a new citizen notification system through its website; the subscription-based service can be reached at www.malibucity.org/news or through the graphic link titled eNotifications on the left side of every page throughout the site. The notification system gives website users the ability to register for news and information about City services and activities. Citizens can now register for over 90 different types of notifications from the City of Malibu, including emergencies, special events and neighborhood-specific information. “The number of categories is large,” said Sandi Turner, Media Information Officer. “The level of specificity available through the system is, however, the most user-friendly aspect of it. We are giving citizens the power to decide what they want to know about from their local government and we’re ensuring we don’t communicate on issues that aren’t of interest. Put simply: you control your subscriptions,” she continued. Citizens can register to receive information either by email and/or text message on a category-by-category basis and can unsubscribe from individual categories at any time. For more information or assistance with registering, please contact Sandi Turner, Media Information Officer at 310-456-2489 ext. 283 [email protected]. !
