Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math lead the way at 4-H Camp Frame
their viewpoints and
evaluation skills.
4-H Camping began in
Berkeley County in 1922
with forty-three campers
and counselors at Camp
Dunn along the Potomac
near Marlowe, West
Virginia. Since 1926 4-H
Camping has been
conducted at 4-H Camp
Frame, 3-miles west of
Hedgesville, that has
planted the seeds of
knowledge and character
in youth. The past twoweeks I directed Tri
County Younger and
Intermediate 4-H Camps
with the support of Cindy
Smalley, the new WVU
Extension agent in
Morgan County. Out
camp theme was “4-H is
Out of this World.” We
continued the tradition
of helping young people
take their first steps to
individuality. Tri County
4-H Camps provide
campers’ opportunities to
develop leadership skills
through the give-andtake of group living, it
gave them the chance to
learn fair play and
sportsmanship, and
helped them broaden
Our WVU Extension
Camping Instructors
(ECI’s) for both weeks
were Mikey Withrow and
Dakota Maravelis and our
WVU STEM Ambassador
(Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math)
was Clara Beth Novotny.
Her goal was to introduce
campers to science in a
positive and interactive
way with experiments
that were open to
promote scientific
exploration that
encourages kids to think
outside the box. Her
personal goal was to show
the campers, especially
those apprehensive about
science that everyone is
capable of mastering
science and math, and it
doesn’t have to be
difficult or scary. Clara
Beth said “Science and
Math can be Fun.”

builds character through
cooperative, intelligent
discipline realized through
camp life. New voices
taught many lessons that
had been stressed at home
(cleanliness, table manners,
courtesy, speech,
helpfulness, dependability,
trustworthiness, respect,
fairness, and citizenship.)
Tri County 4-H Camping
helped young people
develop in the four folds of
the 4-H program -- Head,
Heart, Hand and Health.
With 432 campers and
staff, Tri County Younger
and Intermediate 4-H
Campers conducted science
experiments, assembled
and programed robots,
built and launched rockets,
and learned to calculate
the speed of space
travel. Each Wednesday
we had our camp picnic and
Star Party where campers
learned about our universe
and its relationship to the
vastness of outer space.
