Welcome Harper Corinne Colburn Megan Elizabeth Davis who were baptized last weekend into the Saint Margaret parish community. May they continue to receive God’s blessings and grace. n Saint Mary Magdalen Mission New Chapel Crucifix ~ San Damiano Cross Father Michael Schleupner blessed the new crucifix on Monday, September 7 during the 8:30 am Mass. The cross depicts the entire story of Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension into glory. This cross is a copy of the one before which Saint Francis prayed when he received his special calling from the Lord. It was painted in the 12th century to be the centerpiece over the altar of the San Damiano church in Assisi. The central figure is Christ himself. The golden color of Christ’s body conveys that Christ is a figure of light, “the light of the world,” giving light to the other figures in the painting. The eyes of Jesus are open, looking out to the world which he loves and saves – much like the figure of Christ on the crucifix in the main church here at Saint Margaret. Above Christ’s head is a circle of red with Christ breaking out of the circle. This signifies Our Lord’s Ascension into heaven. There are various images of people and angels in the cross – 33 of them. The most notable are to the left of Christ’s body – Mary and Saint John. This recalls the touching scene in Saint John’s Gospel when the dying Jesus says, “Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother.” A booklet is available in the chapel that explains the cross. Reading this prayerfully, and if possible, in the chapel can serve as a wonderful meditation. The chapel is open daily until 5:00 pm for private prayer. We are most grateful to the Zukauskas Family who gave the cross in memory of Peter J. and Jennie Zukauskas. New Mass Times Saint Margaret Church Saturday: 4:00 and 6:00 pm Sunday: 8:00 am, 10:00 am, Noon and 5:00 pm Saint Mary Magdalen Sunday: 9:00 and 11:00 am Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for September 2015 From Father Mike We join the Holy Father in praying for: Dear Friends, Today I am continuing the update on facilities projects that have recently been completed or are currently underway. I began this in last week’s column (September 6) and you can find that (and other past columns) on the parish website. Opportunities for the Young – That opportunities for education and employment may increase for all young people. • Catechists That catechists may give witness by living in a way consistent with the faith they proclaim. We welcome the following new parishioners to Saint Margaret Parish. We are happy that you have chosen Saint Margaret to be your spiritual home. Thomas and Laura Akers and family Jason Browne Mike and Lindsey Deremeik and family Francesco and Karen D’Antona Joe Fleckenstein Carl and Barabara Love Christopher and Heather Karwacki and family David and Lindsay Mack and family Greg and Megan McCarthy and family Richard and Mary Ann Pencek John and Kelly Roiy and family Al and Deborah Visconti and family Are you new to Saint Margaret or areinterested in becoming a parishioner? Please join us for our next Greet and Meet on Saturday, November 7 at 5:00 pm in the Adult Education Center. 2 Repair of the slate roof and chimneys of the rectory. This included the repair of chimney flashings. • Repair of the slate roof of the AEC. This also included installation of snow stop-boards. • Changed lights in the AEC to LED and installed dimmers. This will be energy-efficient and allow for different light settings for different types of events. • Replaced ceilings and lighting in all rooms of the primary school building. This work was partially funded by a grant from the Maryland State Department of Education. We did the same thing last summer in the elementary school building. • • Replacement of the rusted grates over the HVAC vent area behind the chapel. We waited to do this until virtually all adjustments on the new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system that was installed in Phase 1 of the church project were completed. Installed windows in the sacristy and music room doors in the church. This makes those doors in compliance with today’s standards. Community Notes John Carroll School ~ Bus Trip to Papal Mass in Philadelphia • Repaired sinkhole at the storm drain behind the Middle School building. This was just discovered in the spring, and the repair was done in the summer. • Replaced damaged ceiling tiles in the Middle School building. The ceilings are in good condition, but some tiles needed attention. • Completed renovation of the lower meeting room in the Primary School building. This included new ceilings and lighting, new air conditioner, installation of a new room divider with double doors, new lockers and complete repainting. Besides constant daytime use by the school, this room is also used most evenings for various meetings. The school paid for the entire cost of this project. • Finally, other standard projects were done especially in the summer months, such as painting, trimming, classroom cleaning, floor waxing, and boiler and fire alarm inspections. I hope that these two columns have given some sense of how the budget dollars earmarked for ordinary and extraordinary repairs are spent. These are “infrastructure” expenses that make our spiritual mission possible. I remain grateful for your generosity. While reducing the weight of a backpack to no more than about 10% of his or her body weight is not always possible, here are some tips for lessening the impact: load heaviest items closest to the child’s back, remove unnecessary items, and select a pack with well-padded shoulder straps. Shoulders and necks have many blood vessels and nerves that can cause pain and tingling in the neck, arms, and hands when too much pressure is applied. Visit our website at www.stmargaret.org September is Recovery Month “Stories of Hope” Hope is the logo for the Substance Abuse Ministry here at Saint Margaret. Our hope is that through these stories, someone struggling with addiction, be they the addict themselves or the friend or loved ones of the individual, will find encouragement to seek help. There is always hope, if we are willing to try. The gift of desperation - that’s the term that members of Narcotics Anonymous use to describe what many people refer to as “hitting bottom.” It is the point where use of alcohol and other drugs have made them so desperate that they can’t continue on the same path. The pain of using is greater than the pain that they try to mask with drugs. Outside of recovery, most people do not see desperation as a gift. For me, the desperation was a gift because it gave me the motivation to pursue a new way of life through recovery. Cocaine had become the focal point of my life and I knew that it was taking me down. In the past, when my love of a particular drug was making my life unmanageable, I kicked cocaine by substituting alcohol and marijuana. It was just alcohol and pot, right? I went into a downward spiral that led to isolating myself from those who cared about me. I began thinking that they would be better off without me. I was failing to meet any of my responsibilities, and activities that I had enjoyed were ignored. Fortunately, I had a taste of recovery forced on me earlier in my life and I remembered seeing people who had seemed happy but who had histories similar to mine. I wasn’t ready for recovery then, but I was now. I returned to meetings and gradually accepted that what I couldn’t do by myself, beat drugs and be a reasonably happy person, I could do through the fellowship of recovery and the 12steps of Narcotics Anonymous. Years later, I’m still working my program and I have a truly blessed life. 3 Liturgy Corner Signs, Symbols, Gestures and Postures ~ SSGP 101 As comforting as the familiar signs, symbols, gestures and postures of our Mass are to us, we run the risk of taking them for granted and, perhaps, merely going through the motions. Are we ignoring the real benefit of these guideposts and aids to our ongoing quest for holiness? Without going into explanations showing how liturgical practices developed, perhaps we should attempt to look out what underlies the visible signs in the living liturgy. We need to discover the soul in the body, the hidden and spiritual in the external and material. Our guide for this study will be a work, originally published in 1911, by Father Romano Guardini. His poetic wisdom about the fundamental language of our Liturgy’s symbols will inspire us to offer ourselves, body and soul, more completely to the Lord.
