By Dolly Yasa
BACOLOD City – Barely a day after the recovery of the bodies of an American national
and his Filipina wife in their own backyard
well, police arrested four farm workers
who are believed to be behind the gruesome
murder.
The decomposing bodies of American national Kevin

out of a well August 17.
Senior Inspector Lawrence Gerald Bathan, Murcia
police chief, identified the suspects as Randy Nuñez,

Bathan said the Sagay City police, Negros Occidental
Provincial Public Safety Company (NOPPSC), and the
PNP Special Action Force first arrested Nuñez and the
Medels past 9 p.m. of August 17 at Sitio Dalia, Puey

Police recovered from the suspects P15,000 cash,
assorted US dollar bills, jewelry, two personal laptops,

AN ANONYMOUS email
detailing the alleged non-remittance of fees has triggered
an investigation into the affairs
of the Iloilo Sports Complex
(ISC) which is managed by the
provincial government.
Iloilo Provincial Administrator Raul Banias said he received an email from a certain
“Leo Guerrero” which exposed
the alleged anomaly.
Banias said the email lacked
specific details as to how much
and what year the alleged nonremittance started, thus, he
HEALTH buffs jog on the oval track of the Iloilo Sports Complex which is under investigation for

Gonzales, Nava raise seven
questions on traffic lights deal
By Wenceslao E. Mateo Jr.
ILOILO City Councilor Jason Gonzales already sent to
the executive branch key questions on the P29-million
traffic lights deal.
“These questions are only from Councilors Gonzales and (Plaridel) Nava. Councilor Joshua Alim
will submit his questions later,” Gonzales’ chief of
staff said.
Gonzales, who leads the City Council probe into
the transaction, expects answers to these questions in
one or two weeks.
The questions has seven major questions and several sub-questions, all contained in a two-page letter
dated August 17, 2015.
The letter was addressed to Mayor Jed Patrick
Mabilog with copies furnished to Joren Sartorio, City
General Services Office head; and city engineer Roberto Divinagracia.
The questions in full text are:
In his letter dated February 4, 2014 to City Engineer Roberto Divnagracia, Mayor Mabilog justified
the change of location from Valeria(-)Delgado to
Quezon-Delgado intersection basing from the “volume and density of traffic…(counts traversing such
intersection)”.
Who conducted the survey for the volume and
density of the traffic…(counts)?
Was it reduced into writing? If yes, can the committee secure a copy of the same?
In terms of length and width of the road, is there
a difference between Valeria-Delgado and QuezonDelgado intersections that would justify the change
order?
When the city government introduced amendments
to the contract with Triune by changing the location,
was there another contract or agreement executed by
the parties to reflect such amendment?
What are the specifications of the Traffic Signal
Controllers that were purchased under the Triune
Electronic Systems, Inc. contract?
In the letter of Triune Electronic Systems, Inc. dated
February 12, 2014, Mr Peter Ong stated that the additional costs incurred that amounted to P1,060,180.00
were a result of the “revision of foundation design to
better suit the field conditions where shallow culverts
have been unearthed on the location.” In light of these,
why did the Itemized Cost Revisions include changes
in the original number of hardware units (i.e. the traffic
signal controller and traffic lights) as well as changes in

Performance audit on
casual employees sought
By Wenceslao E. Mateo Jr.
ILOILO City Councilor Plaridel Nava wants a full audit of all
casual employees at the City Hall.
Nava raised the audit during their regular session August 18
when he asked Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo, appropriations
committee chair, if how many casuals are employed in the city
government.
“By knowing them, we may then check whether or not they are
really working for the people’s money paid to them,” he said.
Nava raised the question before they voted on Supplemental
Budgets No. 2 and 3, which contained the one-month Productivity
Enhancement Incentive for regular employees of the city government and the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO).
The PEI for LEEO employees under SB No. 2 amounted to
P1,635,207; while that for regular city government workers (SB
No. 3) totalled P52,287,639.
The councilors approved the two supplemental budgets, including Nava who also concurred but on the condition that the appropriations committee release the names of casual employees.
Peñaredondo said the casual workers number to 1,600 aside
from 1,680 regular employees.
Casual workers are hired on a limited basis for specific tasks
and projects.
Hiring of casual employees has become a tool of political
patronage as most of those who are hired are supporters of incumbent officials.
Peñaredondo said only the court and the mayor can tell him to
release the names of these casuals.
“If Nava suspects that some of them do not exist (ghost
employees), I can assure him that they are all warm bodies,”
he said.
As to other issues raised by Nava, he said that it is not surprising
because the latter belongs to the political opposition.
Asked if the political alliance of the Liberal Party (where
Mabilog and Peñaredondo belong) is still allied with Nava’s
United Nationalist Alliance party, he retorted: “How could that
be? It is already raining scud missiles here and there!”
Central market prexy denies
misrepresenting vendors
By Wenceslao E. Mateo Jr.
REX Donasco denied the accusations of Mayor Jed Patrick
Mabilog’s mouthpiece that he
is “usurping” the leadership of
Iloilo Central Market vendors
in the case against the proposed
revitalization of the market.
“That is not true. I am president of the ASTRAVEN. Our
registration with the Securities
and Exchange Commission will
attest to that,” Donasco said.
ASTRAVEN stands for the
Association of Stallholders and
Transient Vendors at the Iloilo
Central Market, Inc.
Donasco is now at the
crosshairs of Jeffrey Celiz,
political affairs adviser and
spokesman of Mabilog, when
the former said they will continue to resist the revitalization
which they labelled as outright
privatization of the central
market.
“If Mr. (Jeffrey) Celiz thinks
he can defend the proposed
revitalization of the central
market against our contrary
position to it without resorting
to personal attacks, I challenge
him to a debate, anywhere he
wants it to be held,” Donasco
said.
Celiz had also accused Donasco for using the vendors for
his political inclinations.
“He has been hosting political meetings at the market in
support of his patrons, how then
can he be objective about the
issues?” Celiz asked.
Celiz also lambasted Donasco past business venture
particularly an adult entertainment bar.
“In that business, he exploited women,” Celis said.

drown in Lambunao
By Jennifer Ponsaran-Rendon
and Angelica L. Tapalla
TWO grade schoolers were drowned to death noon of
August 17 in a river in Lambunao, Iloilo.
Police identified the victims as Ahron John Carona,
11, of Pandan village, Lambunao, and Leo Rey Estabillo, 11, of Cubay, both Grade 5 pupils of Pandan
Elementary School.
They were declared dead on arrival at the Don
Ricardo Ladrido Memorial Hospital in Lambunao
town.
Inspector Felix Alianza, Jr., Lambunao police chief,
said Carona, Estabillo, and another classmate went to
a quarry site located at the center of the Ulian River
after eating lunch.
Alianza said the two victims stepped into the loose
sand bed and drowned in a deep portion of the river.
Alianza said the victims might be unaware that the
river has gone deep because of quarry operations in
the area.
Their other classmate immediately asked assistance
from residents who immediately tried to rescue the two
victims. Their bodies were found an hour later some
10 feet below the river.
Investigation is still being made if there are individuals who should be held liable for the incident.

Sugarcane investment
S
UGAR REGULATORY Administration Regina Martin
has urged capitalists to consider investing in the sugarcane
industry. The passage of the Sugarcane Industry Development Act authored by Cong. Alfredo Benitez and Senator Cynthia
Villar has expanded the usage of the sugarcane and has provided
incentives to entice investors.
In her speech before the 62nd Annual Convention of the Philippine Sugar Technologists Association in Cebu last week, she
painted a grim view of the near term prospects of the industry from
the traditional consumer side. We always think of sugar for our table, for
pastries and cakes, for candies and
drinks and other food processing but
this time the call is for the extraction
of the cane juice for fuel.
The call for investment into other
products from sugarcane is not new,
though for a different reason. The
Philsutech was in fact organized
in 1932 by Dr. Carlos Locsin,
Modesto P. Sa-onoy the chemist of Victorias Milling
Company to find means to salvage
453,405 tons of excess sugar that
could not be exported to the Unites
States, the only world market of
Philippine sugar. The destruction of this sugar was dictated by
the Sugar Limitation Act which was condition precedent for
the grant of Philippine Commonwealth status in 1934 and total
independence in 1946.
Today the call is to diversify the use of sugarcane juice came at
the time where there is not enough of it for domestic consumption.
World sugar prices are doing down or could reach the profitable
bottom, at least for now or the next five years.
This is ironic. If our production next year at most would reach
2.35 million tons according to SRA estimate and our consumption
is about 2.2 million that leaves us a small volume for the ethanol
plants. If the estimate falls to less than SRA’s low expectation of
2.25 our domestic market will be in a precarious situation. This
is granting that the US prediction of a long drought next year
does not happen.
Administrator Martin is right when she said “the industry
needs to invest in techniques that will increase yield per hectare,
consolidate farms to plantation of economical scale, provide
technical advice and examples of good farming practice to
farmers, and programs that will convert sugarcane farmers into
agri-businessmen.”
This is the formula but this has been the call of the industry for
a long time. In fact because this formula was unheeded for decades
national production remains flat. The estimate for 2015-2016 is
lower than the previous years. If there has been no shortage in the
retail market, some people believe that the slack is being filled
in by smuggled sugar.
Just before the milling season closed, SRA classified all the
sugar to the domestic market, foregoing even our US quota that
ironically was increased at the time when we have little sugar to
spare.
Considering this emerging scenario the call of Administrator
Martin is already late in the day, not that she had not issued the
warning earlier but that the response has been lackluster.
Increasing the commitment of sugarcane to ethanol plants is
fine if we have enough sugar for the table. If the ethanol plants
lacked the canes there would not be a national howl but if sugar
for home consumption falls below demand there will a loud outcry
and call for importation. This will create another cycle that is bad
for the industry but good to traders.
Compounding this hesitation to invest in the industry, not
just for the ethanol plants which are dependent on the farm production is the instability of land ownership. Who would invest
on land where there is no permanence? The SRA program of
block farms are models for what plantation cultivation is but

Afraid of public drubbing over

If this is stonewalling, then

the point of hiding their blemish, even behind a thin piece of
paper.
If City Hall is indeed serious
in claiming efficient and good
governance, it should not resort to
paper-pushing. Rather, the mayor
and his alter egos should man
up and face the council and the
public if they really have nothing
to hide.
It’s as simple as that.

Kinaray-a writing contest
Tuning in to God
story or poem. Deadline for submission of
entries is Sept. 30, 2015.
Prizes: first – P10,000 and medal; second – P7,000 and medal; third – P5,000
and medal.
For more details, click on the link provided in the announcement.
Dungug Kinray-a enjoins every Kinaray-a speaking citizens to join and be proud
of their language. It is ours.
This pride of Kinaray-a is one of the
legacies of Antique’s beloved governor,
Evelio Javier, whose death while protecting the votes of Cory Aquino in the 1986
snap elections against Ferdinand Marcos,
triggered People Power that ousted Marcos.
Antiqueños have always suffered from
inferiority complex being the poorest
province in the island of Panay (the other
provinces are Iloilo, Capiz and Aklan). In
the days when Negros was sugarland, Antique was the source of sakadas, who labor
in the sugarcane fields of the haciendas in
Negros Occidental.
When the charistmatic Evelio Javier
became governor he worked on making
Antiqueños rediscover the richness of their
culture. He encouraged Antiqueños to feel
proud of being an Antiqueño. That included
speaking Kinaray-a.
Before, Antiqueños would speak Ilonggo or Hiligaynon, ashamed of Kinaray-a.
De los Santos said Kinaray-a is the
original language and could be considered
superior to Hiligaynon.
There’s a lot of similarities between
Kinaray-a and Hiligaynon. But there are
distinguishable differences like the “r” in
the former becoming “l” in the latter. Example: the English word “none” is “wara”
in Kinaray-a. It’s “wala” in Hiligaynon. Or
the word “post” is “harigi” in Kinaray-a
and “haligi” in Hiligaynon.
De los Santos explained that “In Hiligaynon society, the Chinese of old Parian,
now Molo, cannot pronounce the “r” so
HIS, as much as possible, should be the first thing we do
once we wake up in the morning. We need to tune in to
God for the simple reason that God is everything to us.
Without him or detached from him, we are actually nothing and
can do nothing of real value even if we do many so-called brilliant
actions. Let’s avoid getting self-deluded.
God is our Creator, the author
of all reality. It is through him that
we go beyond what we merely see
and feel, or what we can understand. With him, we get in touch
with reality in all its entirety. Our
world would then not just be our
own world, quite subjective, but
the world as God created it. We
get to become objective and global in our perception of things.
Yes, it may take some time before we can actually tune in to him
Fr. Roy Cimagala since we have to contend with a
lot of static, like our laziness and
lethargy, our lack of understanding of the role of God in our life,
if not worse things like religious indifference, agnosticism\and
atheism.
But once we can overcome these, which is actually a lifetime
struggle for us, we should try our best to hook up with him,
no matter how tentative and tenuous, as soon as possible. The
difficulties involved in connecting ourselves with him should
not discourage. Rather they should spur us to find the means to
achieve this goal.
This is no pipe dream. We are not inventing things, engaging
in fiction. In the first place, because God is always around. And
he is not present in us and in the world in a passive way. He is
eternally active, full of love and desire to be with us. He is actually
intervening in our lives through his abiding providence.
Besides he has given us everything we need to get in touch
with him, and even to be intimate with him. He has given us his
own Son who became man and who revealed to us all we need to
know and to be with God.
Christ has left us with his word and teaching, his sacraments,
and the Church itself, all of which perpetuate till the end of time
and beyond his living presence and redemptive action for our own
sake. In fact, Christ remains with us in the real sense of the word.
We are not left only with some symbols and signs.
We just have to dispose ourselves to capture this fundamental
reality of our life by exercising our faith, hope and love as fully as
possible. This is actually the most fundamental duty we need to carry
out. All other duties and responsibilities would depend on this.
As Christ himself said, he is the way, the truth and the life. No
one goes to the Father except through him. In another instance,
he described himself as the vine and we the branches. We need to
be with him if we want to live the life proper to us.
We can start tuning ourselves in to him by developing the
practice of morning offering, that is, once we wake up, the first
thought that we should try to make is to address God, saying
whatever comes to mind first, as in, “Lord, thank you for another
day,” or “I love you, Lord, and I want to serve you,” or words
to that effect.
That way, we already dispose ourselves to be with him, and from
there, let’s continue to deal with him by carrying our ordinary daily
duties, which are a vital part of God’s will for us, and by having
recourse to a variety of acts of piety, like mental prayer, spiritual
reading, going to Mass and receiving Holy Communion, etc.
These acts of piety will keep our intimacy with God even
as we get immersed with the things of the world. And far from
desensitizing us from world affairs, they actually would sharpen
our perception of things, and would give us the proper impulses
and motives for our involvement in these mundane concerns.
Let’s disabuse ourselves from the fear that piety undermines our
responsibilities in the world.
Of course, God will always be a mystery. But instead of being
restrained and turned off by it, his mysteriousness and ineffability
should, in fact, draw us more to him. It’s only in heaven, our final
abode, that we can see him face to face. But now, we have to be
led by faith, hope and charity that will always have their share of
lights and shadows.

Kinaray-a is also spoken in some parts of

There’s a group of Antiqueños, who
has taken up the advocacy of keeping
Kinaray-a alive because language gives

the way they pronounced some words.
De los Santos also said the Spanish
friars, who settled in Iloilo also changed
the “d” to “r” as in the word for coconut
shredder “kudkudad.” In Hiligaynon, it’s
“kudkuran.”
“In summary,” De los Santos said,
“Kinaray-a is the original language and
Hiligaynon the ‘corrupted’ language, as
the result of the speech deficiencies of the
Chinese merchants and the Spanish priests,
and the loan words from Spanish, Cebuano,
Bikol and Waray introduced by the friars.
De los Santos quoted Hiligaynon writer
Santiago Alv. Mulato saying, “Kinaray-a
was not adulterated because like a jar
already full of water, a drop from above
could not add to it anymore.”
In sponsoring this writing contest,
which is on its 9th year, Dungug Kinaray-a
said it is part of its mission to encourage
more extensive use of Kinaray-a. (Malapnagun nga ginagamit ang Kinaray-a sa

Dungug Kinray-a believes that Kinaray-a is a beautiful, deep, pure, and rich
language. “Ang Kinaray-a matahum,

A laudable project that every Antiqueño
should support.

Barbarians at the Gate!
(Or the attack against marriage and the family)
O
N FEBRUARY 16, 2008, Cardinal Carlo Caffara, Archbishop of Bologna, after a Mass celebrated at the tomb
of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, granted an interview to Tele
Radio Padre Pio.
In that interview, Caffara revealed that Sister Lucy of Fatima
fame told him that the final battle between the Lord and the reign
of Satan will be about marriage and the family.
Sister Lucia did not specify when this final battle will take
place, but perhaps the vision Pope Leo XIII had on October 3,
1884 may be related. Just
celebrating Holy Mass
Abraham V. Llera after
on that day, Pope Leo XIII
collapsed as if dead. After he
was revived, he recounted a
vision of Satan approaching
the throne of God, boasting he will destroy the Church if given
the chance to.
The Lord reminded Satan that his Church is invincible. Satan
then replied, “Grant me one century and more power of those
who will serve me, and I will destroy it.” Our Lord granted him
100 years.
The Lord then allowed the Pope a vision of the events of the
20th century: wars, immorality, genocide, and apostasy on a large
scale. Alarmed by the spine-chilling vision, the Pope sat down
and wrote the prayer to St. Michael, the same prayer the faithful
pray today in times of distress.
Many believe that we are now in the midst of those 100
years.
Before the Irish people voted on May 22, 2015 to allow
same-sex unions, 20 countries have already embraced samesex unions either by legislation or via court decisions. Ireland
was the first to do it by popular vote. These 20 countries are:
The Netherlands (2000); Belgium (2003); Canada (2005);
Spain (2005); South Africa (2006); Norway (2009); Sweden
(2009); Argentina (2010); Iceland (2010); Portugal (2010);
Denmark (2012); Brazil (2013); England and Wales (2013);
France (2013); New Zealand (2013); Uruguay (2013); Luxembourg (2014); Scotland (2014); Finland: (signed 2015,
effective 2017).
Commentary
Then on June 26, 2015, SCOTUS - The U.S. Supreme Courtvoted 5-4 making same-sex unions legal in all United states.
Why did same-sex unions suddenly crop up in our discussions?
Because same-sex unions is the weapon the Devil is using to
destroy marriage and the family. By rejecting the God-mandated
man-woman dichotomy of marriage, and by replacing it with the
sterile man-man or woman-woman abomination, the Devil hopes
to strike right at the heart of God’s plan for mankind and for all
of Creation.
There’s only one reason why God instituted marriage: procreation. Malachi 2:15 is very clear: God instituted marriage so
that godly offspring may result. But why would God want babies
to be born? God has only one reason: to fill heaven with human
beings. Now why would God do that? Because God wants us to
share eternal happiness with him.
But, then, the Devil, forever malevolent and desiring
nothing but the fall of man, will not have anything of that.
That’s why he’d do everything he can to lead us away from
our eternal destiny. His weapon of choice: same-sex unions,
the very thing we see unfolding before our very own eyes
today.
The Devil bade his time well. In order for him to succeed, he
has to change the belief about sex being the exclusive privilege
of a man and woman married to each other, about procreation
being the reason for marriage. This the Devil succeeded in doing by making sex possible without it ever resulting in a pregnancy. The development in 1920 by Fredrick Killian of latex
condoms; and the subsequent acceptance of contraception for
the first time among any Christian group, by the Anglicans in
1930; the development in 1957 of lubricated condoms; and the
widespread introduction of The Pill in the 60s were the Devil’s
initial steps.
For good measure, the Devil put in abortion, then late-term
abortion, then the killing of babies already born, and, now, the
sale of baby body parts. Just as Roe vs. Wade in 1973 opened
the world wide to abortion, the SCOTUS decision is expected to
open the world wide to the sterile same-sex unions.
The Devil must have gloated over his initial successes. With
marriage thus redefined, has the Devil won?

DA: Region-6 ready
for strong El Niño
By Louine Hope Conserva
THE Department of Agriculture (DA)
assured that Western Visayas is ready to
deal with the effects of a “strong” El Niño
in September.
Engr. Roy Abaya, DA-6 OIC regional
director said they have been anticipating
the prolonged drought since last year by
establishing mitigating measures such as
information drive among farmers.
“El Niño is a natural phenomenon and
the major effect is water scarcity. We are
telling our farmers the right technology
to conserve water, teaching them to plant
alternative crops and rice varieties that
can tolerate drought and make use of their
available resources,” Abaya said.
Another alternative Abaya cited is cloud
seeding.
“We are preparing for it. We have to
face the reality. Right information is the
best solution,” he added.
Abaya said that based on the report of the
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) two months ago, Western Visayas was
not included among the provinces that will
be affected by strong El Niño.
“PAGASA released a forecast about
the extension of El Nino in the second
half of the year and fortunately I didn’t
see Region-6 in the list of provinces to be
affected,” he said.
He said DA will secure supplemental
budget in preparation for the El Niño.

Leonardia seeks more
time on political plans
By Dolly Yasa
BACOLOD City - Bacolod City Lone District
Congressman Evelio Leonardia is asking for
more time before he decides on whether he
will seek re-election or challenge City Mayor
Monico Puentevella in 2016.
Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya said this was the
Leonardia’s appeal during the meeting of Grupo
Progreso under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) August 16 to discuss their plans for
next year.
Eerier, Gasataya called on Leonardia to meet
district leaders to discuss the 2016 elections
amid reports that the latter will stage a comeback and challenge Puentevella.
Gasataya said the 6-hour meeting was
presided over by Leonardia and attended by
Councilors Em Ang, Caesar Distrito, Roberto
Rojas, former councilors Al Victor Espino
and Dindo Ramos, and former Association of
Barangay Captains president Mona Dia Jardin
and himself.
“City Councilor Carl Lopez was in Manila,
while former councilor Homer Bais has resigned from NPC,” he said.
Gasataya added that the national NPC leadership will hold consultations today so they met
Sunday in order to relay the sentiments of local
party leaders on the upcoming elections.
“The meeting Sunday was more of an exploratory discussion. The common stand of the
group is that NPC should have local candidates.
There were some members who asked Leonar-
dia to run again for mayor, while others offered
to run for other positions,” he added.
Ang said one of the things they discussed
during the meeting was the stand of the party
on national candidates which will be known
today.
She said Grupo Progreso is made up of the
NPC and the Nacionalista Party which counts
Councilors Lopez and Distrito as members.
Ang added that they also discussed the local
lineup, especially for congressman, mayor and
vice mayor.
“Leonardia said the whole party will meet
in the first week of September and he will
make an announcement then. At least we have
a clue about the position he might be running
for,” she added.

By Dolly Yasa
BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental Governor
Alfredo Marañon Jr. found an unlikely ally in
Board Member Renato Gustilo of Love Negros

Gustilo said it is only his personal opinion

of our group.”
The last termer provincial board member
said if LN Team will field a gubernatorial
candidate “this is the first time that we in the
province’s first district will be campaigning
against an incumbent governor who is on his
last term.”
Gustilo also wants Vice Governor Eugenio
Jose Lacson to run for re-election instead of
challenging Marañon even as he denied rumors
that 1st district Rep. Julio Ledesma IV will
field his wife, actress Assunta De Rossi, for

Gustilo and outgoing Escalante City Mayor

Gustilo said Ledesma’s replacement will be
discussed during the party convention in the

After SEA Games gold,
Vosotros targets PBA
FORMER De La Salle University standout Almond
Vosotros believes his performance in the 28th Southeast Asian Games last June went a long way towards
boosting his stock ahead of the 2015 PBA Rookie
Draft.
Vosotros was part of the Gilas Cadets team that
won gold, beating Indonesia in a competitive final, and
wowed fans with his impressive outside shooting.
His best game came against Thailand in the semifinal, as he drained six of 11 three-pointers for 18 points,
and kept the Gilas Cadets in the game with his timely
bombs from beyond the arc. They won the game, 8075, to advance to the gold medal game.
In all, Vosotros averaged 14 points per game – second among all Filipinos – while shooting 41% from
the three-point area.
“Iba ‘yung feeling kapag naglalaro ka para sa
bayan,” Vosotros told reporters last Monday during
the 2015 Draft Suite presented by SLAM Magazine
and Under Armour. “We know na ‘yung buong bayan
natin, nanonood at sumusuporta.”
“Siguro, ‘yun ‘yung nakatulong sa akin, para tumaas ang value ko as a player,” he added.
Vosotros felt he was able to prove that he can play
at a high level in international competition, but insisted
that he is not yet satisfied with what he achieved in
the SEA Games.
“Hindi ko pa rin nararating ‘yung goal ko na makarating sa PBA,” he pointed out.
Vosotros, who won a championship with La Salle
in UAAP Season 76, brings tremendous shooting skill
to whichever team will draft him. Although short for
two-guard, Vosotros has virtually unlimited range and
will not hesitate to pull the trigger.
“’Yung shooting skills ko, ‘yun talaga ang dinedevelop ko since matagal na,” he said, “And sana
ma-develop ko pa rin pag nasa pro na ako.”
But Vosotros stressed that he is also ready to play
point guard if needed, something he did for the Green
Archers in Season 77 when Thomas Torres suffered
an injury.
“Ready naman ako to play any role,” Vosotros
said. “1 or 2, kung ano mas makakatulong sa team
na magpi-pick sa akin.” (Camille B. Naredo/ABSCBNNews.com)
Jason Day win confirms
change of the guard
KOHLER, Wisconsin - Jason
Day’s breakthrough victory at
the PGA Championship served
notice that a changing of the
guard is now complete with an
exciting posse of young guns
set to dominate the majors for
the next decade.
Newly crowned world number one Jordan Spieth and Rory
McIlroy are already established
as the game’s leading duo but
Australian Day, 27, American
Rickie Fowler, 26, and rising
Japanese talent Hideki Matsuyama, 23, are in hot pursuit.
Six of the last seven major
championships have been won
by twenty-somethings, proof
positive that the ‘Big Five’ era
of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and
Retief Goosen is over.
“The game now is certainly
very healthy, exciting and
strong,” American Paul Azinger, who won the 1993 PGA
Championship at Inverness
and has since been become
an acclaimed golf analyst on
television, told Reuters.
“We are beginning to blend
into a post-Tiger era. This year
in all four majors, it seems like
the same cast of three or four
characters are right at the top.
“Dustin Johnson, Jason Day,
Jordan Spieth have all been
in contention, and now Rory
McIlroy is back after his injury
absence (a ruptured ligament in
his left ankle).”
Northern Irishman McIlroy,
now aged 26, won the last two
majors of 2014 and the remarkable Spieth, who celebrated
his 22nd birthday last month,
clinched the first two majors
this year before tying for fourth
at the British Open and finishing
second behind Day at the PGA
Championship on Sunday.
“Jordan Spieth continues to
amaze,” said Azinger. “I don’t
know if anybody would have
even thought we would ever
see anybody like him with that
maturity at such a young age.
“He’s my favourite golfer to
watch and I also love watching
Jason Day. He is a mega talent,
and he certainly proved that this
week at Whistling Straits.”
Day, after several close calls
at the majors over the past five
years, finally crossed the finish
line triumphantly on Sunday
with a major record low of 20under 268.
YOUNG GUN
CHALLENGE
His emotion-charged win
lifted him to a career-high third
in the world rankings and he
looks forward to challenging
players such as Spieth and
McIlroy on a regular basis in
golf’s blue riband events.
“I know exactly what I have
done to get myself in a position
where I’m holding the (PGA
Championship) trophy right
now,” said Day.
“As long as I keep working
on those things and get the process right, I know that there’s
going to be plenty of these
to hold as long as I really am
feeling motivated and I want it
more than anyone else.
“As long as I am healthy, I
feel like I’m going to be there
a long time. I still want to accomplish that number one goal
of mine, which is to be the best
player in the world.”
Day is excited about facing
multiple rivals.
“Golf is in a very healthy
stage now,” he said. “Three to
five years ago, it was kind of
struggling a little bit with the
identity of who was really going to be that number one player
in the world, who was going to
be the next best thing.
“Rory came out and was really dominating, but there was
no one really kind of challenging him for that role. For young
guys like myself, Jordan, Rickie
Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama,
we’re starting to play better golf
and starting to challenge.
“That’s what I’m looking
forward to in the future is the
sheer competition of being able
to fight against these guys each
week. It’s going to be a lot of
fun over the next five to 10
years.” (Mark Lamport-Stokes,

Top ranking
still a distant
dream for
Andy Murray
LONDON – Andy Murray
claimed his 11th Masters 1000
title when he ended an eightmatch losing streak against
Novak Djokovic in the Rogers Cup final on Sunday, but
when it comes to the game’s
top brass he is still the odd
man out.
Of the so-called Big Four of
Djokovic, Roger Federer and
Rafa Nadal, twice grand slam
champion Murray is the only
member never to have topped
the ATP rankings.
Federer, winner of 17 grand
slams, has spent 302 weeks at
the summit, Djokovic 160 and
counting and Nadal, down at
eight now, 141.
Murray, 28, moved up above
Federer to second in the ATP’s
latest rankings on Monday,
courtesy of his dazzling displays in Montreal culminating
in 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory over Serb
Djokovic in an absorbing threehour duel.
But the Briton still trails
Djokovic by nearly 6,000
points in the standings -- a
huge gap that Murray has no
realistic chance of closing until
next year.
“It’s incredibly tough,” Murray, who would love to add
the number one ranking to his
Wimbledon, U.S. Open and
Olympic titles, told The Tennis
Podcast.
“The points I’ve accumulated this year would sometimes
be enough to get to number
one in the world, at a different
time.
“Whereas just now I’m still
almost 6000 points behind
Novak. The consistency that
he’s shown over the last couple
of years has been phenomenal
and before that, Roger and Rafa
were exceptional.

keep doing that. I still feel like
I have a good few years left in

Roach eyes Danny Garcia
for Pacquiao’s next fight
HALL-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach has tabbed unbeaten Danny
Garcia as his preferred opponent for Manny Pacquiao when the
“Pacman” makes his return to the ring in 2016.
Pacquiao is still recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained
while training for his May 2 fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.,
but plans to fight again next year.
Although he remains on the sidelines, Pacquiao remains a
popular figure in the sport and is still being called out by some of
the best welterweights, including former sparring partner Amir
Khan.
It is the undefeated Garcia (31-0) whom Roach wants his top
fighter to face, however.
“I want Danny Garcia. That’s my choice,” Roach declared in
an interview with Boxing News Online last week. “That’s the
easiest fight in the (expletive) world, and you can tell his dad
that as well.”
“His dad (Angel Garcia) psyched out Amir Khan, but he won’t
psych Pacquiao out, I promise. Pacquiao will knock Garcia out. I
like the dad, but he talks too much,” Roach added.
Garcia is coming off a ninth round stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi in his welterweight debut last September. The Philadelphia
native previously dominated at the light-welterweight division
and holds a TKO win over Khan.
Roach is not totally against a match-up against Khan, who is
also a former light-welterweight champion, but stressed that the
money should be right especially if it will be held in Dubai.
“People have spoken to me about a fight with Amir,” said
Roach, adding that he will be interested in a Pacquiao-Khan
match.
“They’re two fast guys, they have history as they’ve trained
together, sparred a few rounds together, and it’s a good fight for
both guys,” he acknowledged.
Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, have said that a
fight with Khan can happen next year in the Middle East.
“The thing about those guys in Dubai, they talk like they have
a lot of money, but they never put it up,” said Roach. “I’m not
really concerned with that at this point. How many years have we
heard there’s going to be a big fight in Dubai? Way, way too many.
If the money comes through, I think it’s a great fight.”
In the meantime, Pacquiao is still busy healing his injured
right shoulder, which required surgery a few days after he lost to
Mayweather. Roach said the “Pacman” is progressing well, and
has even been swimming and playing basketball.
“But it won’t be a while until he’s in the ring again. Three to
six months,” he added. (ABS-CBNnews.com)

China-PH trade growing
amid territorial conflict
By Maricyn A. De los Santos
OTHER areas cooperation between the Philippines and
China are ongoing and are going strong amid the territorial conflict on the West Philippine Sea, according
to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
DFA Assistant Secretary Charles Jose said bilateral
trade between the two countries grew by 17 percent
in 2014.
“We are happy to note that in spite of the South
China Sea issue, other cooperation with China are still
going on and are going strong. The bilateral trade with
China grew by 17 percent in 2014 compared to 2013,”
said Jose, who was in Iloilo City recently for a series
of multisectoral fora on West PH Sea.
But the country’s imports declined by 13.4 percent
in May 2015, including those from China.
Latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority
showed purchases from China, the country’s biggest
source of imports, declined by 1.0 percent to USD
719.92 million from the USD727.40 million in May
2014.
China’s share in the country’s import as of May
2015 reached 16.4 percent.
On the other hand, revenue from the country’s exports to China reached USD529.15 million, generating
a total trade value of USD1.249 billion and USD190.78
million in trade deficit.
“In terms of tourism, which is one of PH’s major
industries, China remains to be the third or fourth
largest source of tourist arrivals,” he added.
In Western Visayas, Chinese tourists are among the
top three highest arrivals in the first months of this year,
together with Koreans and Taiwanese.
Jose said many Philippine companies are opening
up investments in China, too.
In fact, there are many Philippine companies
investing in China than Chinese investments in the
Philippines, he stressed.
Jose said the DFA is hoping the issue will not affect
Filipinos working in China and the Chinese-Filipinos
in the country.
“We are against the policy of the Chinese Government but we have nothing against the Chinese
people, especially Chinese-Filipinos or the Tsinoys,”
Jose said.
He called on OFWs, who are mostly professionals
working in hotels, schools and industries in China, to
keep a low profile and do their jobs.
“They need not hold protest against the Chinese
government, and our best interest is for the Pinoys
to keep their jobs. We are hoping they’ll be insulated
from this problem, and that they’d not become pawns,”
he said.
Jose noted that the DFA has not received reports of
Chinese removing Filipino OFWs from their jobs.
“If there are those whose contracts are not renewed,
it is the decision of their employer and not as China’s
official policy,” he said.
Meanwhile, the government is doing its best to
extend support to fisherfolk affected in the conflict,
particularly those from Zambales, Pangasinan and

expressed interest in the project,
did not submit pre-qualification
documents. Binding bids will be
opened in January.
The first bundle includes the

The second bundle covers the P40.57 billion Davao

Aspect Advantage:
Taking on the challenge of the Millennials
I
N TWO years time, the 80-million strong Generation Y or
the Millennials (those born from 1977 to 1995) are poised to
outspend the Baby Boomers (born from 1946 to 1964) and
become the most powerful consumers segment.
This means that the generation that drove the growth of many
major industries and brands for the last 30 years is about to be
overtaken by a new generationthat thrives on technology and does
not conform to the traditional customer pathways.
This is according to the Aspect Consumer Experience Index: Millennial Research On Customer Service, a study that reveals69 percent
of Millennials now prefer to solve their customer service issues on their
own instead of having to go through customer service channels.
The results of the study were presented by Jim Freeze, SVP and
Chief Marketing Officer of Aspect during the Aspect Advantage
Media Briefing held recently.
Freeze said special attention was given to Millennials, because
their views on customer experience usher in an entirely new wave
of digital expectations to the marketplace.
The Aspect CMO likewise warned that companies that do not
adapt will risk obsolescence as Millennials become the economic
powerhouse in the near future.
“The average consumer interacts with customer service 65
times a year, yet they are increasingly underwhelmed with an
experience that does not reflect consumers’ digital and mobile
preference nor their desire to resolve issues on their own. This
represents a tremendous missed opportunity for companies to
build business and secure customer loyalty.”
As social media becomes increasingly more important in terms
of influencing customer service issues, it has now also evolved
becoming a powerful marketing tool for companies.
“It is now very common for people to take to social media to ask
for advice and try to solve issues. As such companies should need to
be more involved and active to respond to their customer issues.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR BPO’S
ASPECT SOFTWARE executives (from left) Edwin Ong, Senior Director for Marketing and Alliances in APAC and ME; Jim Freeze,
Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer; Sanjay Gupta, Managing Director for SA; and Alfred Lallana, Country Manager.
“true test” of how much a company values them. While companies
need effective strategies for all generations, they can’t afford to
ignore the increasing buying power of Millennials who are not
afraid to take their business elsewhere if left unsatisfied.
With the flexibility and nearly unlimited mobility brought on
by smartphones, consumers around the world have taken to find
issue resolution to business questions by themselves, on the go,
and whenever they want instead of relying on the constraints of
call center business hours.

Freeze said this self-service trend presents a big opportunity
for the country’s booming Business Process Outsourcing industry. Instead of seeing the shift in customer service preference of
Millenials, BPOs should view it as an opportunity to be the first
to adapt and get ahead of the competition.
Data from the BangkoSentralngPilipinas showed that the BPO
industry is looking to overtake overseas Filipino workers (OFW)
remittances as the economy’s main economic engine.
The BSP said the BPO sector’s prospects are much brighter as revenues
are expected to grow by at least 15 percent as compared to OFW remittances from which would only grow by 6 percent at most this year.
By 2016, BPOs would earn $25 billion annually, industry
estimates showed.
Freeze said that the mindshift of looking at the contact center from an
expense to an enabler to grow topline revenues is going to be huge.
Aspect’s fully-integrated solution unifies the three most important facets of modern customer engagement strategy: customer
interaction management, workforce optimization, and back-office.
Through a full suite of cloud, hosted and hybrid deployment options, we help the world’s most demanding contact centers and
back offices seamlessly align their people, processes and touch
points to deliver remarkable customer experiences.
Part of the value proposition that Aspect offers in terms of selfservice is increasing interactions, since simple inquiries can now
be done by machines, it actually elevates the role of agent.
“Agents should be reserved for high value transactions. Not
on things that consumers can do on their own such as pulling up
accounts and providing basic information.
“Aspect can help your business participate in social interactions in a
cost-effective manner using proven contact center efficiencies and provide
you with the ability to engage with customers who are already leveraging
social media to ask for help, guidance and assistance with any issue that
is having an impact on their customer experience,” said Freeze.
ASPECT OMNI-CHANNEL AND CUSTOMER
EXPERIENCE PLATFORM
Customer experience is increasingly defined by customer
service: 76 percent of all generations view customer service as a
Aspect’s Customer Experience Platform (CXP) 14.1
streamlines the process of designing, streamlining and deploying
self-service customer contact applications across multiple communications channels, like voice, text (IM, SMS, USSD), mobile
web, social networks like Twitter and smartphone applications.
By storing Context Cookies in Aspect’s Continuity Server
during the customer journey, customers can experience continuity
when attempting to complete an interrupted transaction either at
a later time, or on a different channel.
Aspect Experience Continuity addresses this growing trend and
allows consumers to do so in a connected environment.
“Everything is changing, consumers have gone from dependent to self-reliant,” said Freeze. “We are undergoing a power
shift from brand to consumer-- with new consumer expectations.
Millennials want to do their customer service on their own time,
wherever they are and in the most convenient way possible.”
Aspect’s interaction management solutions make it easy to
deliver a consistent customer experience on voice, mobile, web
and social channels enabling mobile customers to traverse multiple
channels of engagement when seeking an answer to their question,
including self-service and agent-assisted options.
The company has also heavily invested to improve its Cloud
infrastructure. Businesses are increasingly recognizing the
compelling advantages of moving contact center infrastructure
to the cloud as they seek competitive advantages in customer
satisfaction and retention while still controlling overall costs.
The cloud streamlines the process of providing modernized, upto-date service to customers, personalizing service to meet their
preferences and demands, in addition to providing the advantages
of cost, reliability and flexibility.

RD 3850’s young leaders
plant 1,000 mangroves
Story and photos
by Elyrose S. Naorbe
MORE or less 120 Rotaractors,
Interactors and Rotarians from
the Rotaract District 3850 took
part in saving the environment
by planting 1, 000 mangroves at
Brgy. Punta Taytay in Bacolod
City, Negros Occidental, August 16, 2015.
The activity included 21 Rotaract Clubs and three Interact
Clubs from Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Dipolog, Iligan and
Zamboanga City.
The mangrove planting
which started 5 a.m. was one
of the activities in the annual
celebration of Rotaract District
Assembly (DISTAS) hosted
by Rotaractors from Negros
Occidental.
The planting area in Punta
Taytay village is one of the
largest mangrove sites in Negros Occidental.
According to District Rotaract Representative Joy Ann
Ardiente, the event was very
successful with the full support of most of the clubs in the
district.
“Over-all the DISTAS 2015
has been a success for it serves
as an avenue for the Rotaractors
and Interactors to come together harmoniously to serve and
fellowship,” Ardiente added.
Kevin Nuevaespaña of the
Rotaract Club of Metro Iloilo
said he learned a lot about the
goals, vision and background
of Rotaract Club while gaining more friends from different
regions comprising the district
3850.
“My first time was indeed a
worthy experience for me since
I got to learn what Rotaract is
and its mission in the world and
because of this, I think will seriously pursue my membership
and live the mantra of service
above self,” he added.
Ardiente also thanked District Governor Oliver Ong of
Mindanao, District Rotaract
Chairman John Michael Ng of
Iloilo, District Interact Chairman Chris Sorongon of Negros,
the DISTAS team led by its
Chair Roxanne Dinaga and all
the Rotaract and Interact Clubs
and their respective Rotary
Clubs.
Rotaract stands for “Rotary
in Action” although the name
originally comes from a combination of “Rotary” and “Interact” (International + Action)
which was created by Rotary

Charter Day
By M. A. De los Santos
SEVENTY-eight unwed couples in Iloilo City are set to
marry in a mass civil wedding
ceremony August 24, 2 p.m. at
Amigo Terrace Hotel.
Chyt Rejaba, overall coordinator of the Red Ladies group,
said the mass wedding is part of
the city’s Charter Day celebration this month.
Couples who will avail
of the civil wedding rites to
be officiated by Mayor Jed
Patrick Mabilog are indigents
who are mostly enrolled in
the government’s Pantawid
Pamilyang Pilipino Program,
she said.
The couples are required
to plant trees at Calajunan
where the city’s dumpsite is
located.
The wedding is for free as a
tax ordinance exempts indigent
couples from paying wedding
registration fees.
The group, with the support of the city government,
is organizing the activity to
help the couples meet the legal
requirements with regard to
the benefits of their children
or spouses.
Rejaba said the mass
wedding is the fourth
the group organized this
year.
Red Ladies organized similar activity in February 14 with
172 wedded couples; May
27 – 64; and July 28 at BJMP
jail – 32.
The group is set to host
another mass wedding on October 21.
Interested couples can visit
Red Ladies Office at the 5th
floor, Iloilo City Hall for inquiries.

Resident Evil 6 will

W
E ALREADY know
that the latest chapter in the Resident
Evil film franchise has already
been green lighted and set for
release January 2017.
But it is only now that we
found out that it’s also going to
be the last for the franchise.
Its title being “Resident
Evil: The Final Chapter” is
already a clear indication that
this is the end; and one of its
main stars, Ali Larter confirmed
it as well.
The history of “Resident

really did not do a good job in
adapting the game was a critical
failure, but it was able to bring in awful, but many (like me) would

wasn’t bad, given its ReymundoSalao nerd sensibility.

KAPUSO stars Mikael Daez and Andrea Torres are certainly one
of GMA Network’s most-sought after love teams, both locally and
abroad, after a sold-out premiere night of their GMA and CTN
co-produced mini-TV series Blood in Dispute in Cambodia.
The premiere night at the Legend Cinema was the highlight of
the CTN Star Tour in Cambodia organized by GMA Worldwide,
Inc., GMA’s content distribution arm, and CTN, Cambodia’s
leading television network.
According to CTN, it was the first time that a local Khmer
movie had sold out as the pair’s fans flocked to the cinema to see
their favorite Filipino stars. The series’ premiere was well-received
as Mikael and Andrea impressed the crowd with their performance,
along with their Cambodian co-stars Khat Vaihang, Meas Thorn
Sreynai and veteran actor Mr. Tep Rindaro.
Mikael expressed his gratitude for the support from their fans
in Cambodia, as well as the effort that was put into organizing the
premiere night. “I was really impressed with the way they prepared
for the premiere of Blood in Dispute. To the producers and the
production crew, my sincerest gratitude! And to the fans who
supported our movie, our heartfelt appreciation for making the
premiere a big success. We hope to bring you more collaboration
projects between the Philippines and Cambodia,” he says.
Andrea also conveyed her tremendous gratitude to their Cambodian fans and hopes they enjoy the series. “Thank you very,
very, very much for the support you have been giving me and
Mikael. Cambodia is like a second home because of your love.
We’re always happy to visit you and make good movies! Enjoy
Blood in Dispute!” she shares.
With the rising demand for GMA content in the Asian region,
Mikael and Andrea have gained a sizeable following after the
airing of their series Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga on CTN.
“Whenever we sell our dramas, we not only promote the content
and our Filipino culture, but our stars as well. If the dramas rate
well in a particular country, our talents gain recognition internationally. The very warm reception by local fans during our star
tour promos proves that our talents have the potential of making
it big outside the domestic market,” says GMA Worldwide, Inc.
Vice President Roxanne J. Barcelona.
Mikael and Andrea had an eventful weekend in Cambodia,
which included an interview and a pictorial with CTN for Blood
in Dispute, as well as a courtesy call with His Excellency Christian B. Montero, Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia. They
also took some time off to experience the local cuisine and meet
their fans.
Blood in Dispute, also produced by Phum Pich Films, will
begin airing in Cambodia on CTN and is scheduled to premiere
in the Philippines on GMA this year.

By Bombette G. Marin
IVERS gave birth to
the world’s most extraordinary cities and

Its calm waters shaped lands

a fertile abode for plants and
animals.
The Iloilo River, which runs
through the heart of Iloilo City,
is 15 kilometers long. Its water
flows from the town of Oton via
the Batiano Creek and traverses
through some of the most populated areas in the city – La Paz,
Mandurriao, Molo, Arevalo and
the City Proper.
The Iloilo River played a
fundamental role in the lives,
history, culture and civilization of the Ilonggos. It was
major mode of transportation
and source of water, food, and
livelihood.
It supports 22 mangrove species out of 35 national species
and is home to 634 hectares of
fishponds blessed with 31 species of fish, crabs and shrimps
which provide livelihood to
130 fisherfolks.
