TONI ONLEY, 1928 - An inventory of his Paper s in The Library of the University of British Columbi a Special Collections Divisio n Prepared by : Mari-Jane 4edenwaldt, August, 198 8 Joan Lighthall, August, 198 9 Jeanni Cockroft, June, 1990 TONI ONLEY . PAPER S INTRODUCTION Toni Onley is one of Canada's outstanding landscape artists , and his colourful mythology makes him one of Canada's mos t celebrated citizens . Born in Douglas, Isle . of Man in 1928, Onle y began painting the Island's countryside at an early age an d received some formal training at the Douglas School of Art . In 1948, Onely emmigrated with his family to Ontari o where he worked as a land surveyor, and as a designer of far m equipment and canned food labels . Onley the followed hi s parents to Penticton, B .C . in the mid-fifties . It was at thi s time that Onley's uncertainties concerning his artistic futur e were answered when he received a scholarship from the Institut o Allende in Mexico . Now a single father with two daughters , (his first wife died in Ontario), Onley auctioned his persona l inventory of 600 works for $1300 and headed for Mexico . Onle y returned to Vancouver in 1958 and by a stroke of luck, due to a last minute cancellation, replaced another artist at th e Vancouver Art Gallery for his first one-man show . With the sal e o f ; two paintings from this exhibition, Onley returned to Mexic o for another two years . The 1960's saw Toni Onley in England on a Canada Counci l grant where he began his experimentation in abstraction an d collage, but more importantly, was attracted back to landscap e art by the great masters of English watercolour painting . Bac k in Vancouver, Onley was commissioned by the Q .E . Playhouse t o produce a mural which to the "horror" of Vancouverites, was a n abstract collage . In 1965, Onley first began flying to reac h remote or otherwise inaccessible landscapes, and acquired a n amphibian aircraft in 1974 . He joined U .B .C .'s departmen t of Fine Arts in 1967 where he remained until 1976 . In 1974 Onley was a guest on the polar icebreaker Loui s St . Laurent, aboard which he painted more than 100 watercolours . It was this trip that fired his interest in the Arctic , politically as well as aesthetically . In 1975 Onley flew a rigorous journey to Cape Dorset to work at the Baffin Islan d Co-op . It was in 1980 that Onley's name became best known t o Canadians . A businessman known only as the "Fraser Valle y Phantom", bought eight hundred of Onley's works for $930,000 . T o date this is the largest purchase of works of a living Canadia n artist . With the sale of all of the watercolours from Silen t Thunder, Onley bought his Wilga '80 aircraft . In 1983 Onley's name peppered newspapers and magazines , first with his threat to burn his personal inventory of prints to protest Revenue Canada and secondly with his spectacular cras h in Garibaldi Park . It was Toni Onley's protest of tax law s which regarded artists as " manufactures" and their artwork a s inventoried " products " that prompted the Rt . Hon . Joe Clark t o introduce a private member's motion to the House of Commons . The matter was referred to the Standing Committee on Communications led to Revenue Canada's interpretation Bulletin - 1T-504 B concerning self employed visual artists and writers . It was i n September, 1983 that Onley and photographer John Reeves crashe d in Onley's Wilga '80 and were left stranded over eighteen hour s suspended on two ledges over a glacial crevasse until they wer e rescued . Onley's artistic pursuits have taken him to Japan, Chin a and to India where he completed the watercolours for Georg e Woodcock's The Walls of India . Onley's scholarley persuit s include manuscripts concerning the Wilga '80 crash, his Japa n travels, introduction for invitations of exhibits, and article s for magazines . The Toni Onley papers also include officia l correspondence with galleries, friends and associates . ii i Guide to Inventor y Genera l The Toni Onley Papers are contained in 16 boxes, each containin g foldered material according to category headings, .In addition , there are containers of photographs of artist's paintings, 1946-80 .
