Introductory
Greetings
Board Chair’s Back-to-School Message
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to welcome all members of our school community, returning or joining our
school community for the first time. Students, parents, teachers and support staff are all vital to the success of our District.
We opened the Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre last year.
Thanks to the work of everyone there the transition has been great
and a thriving learning community is up and running.
We are now at work on the total revitalization of Medicine Hat High School.
This revitalization will make a proud school, with a history of success,
into a new school which will carry on that proud tradition of success
well into the 21st century. We have been assured that in order
to meet the needs of the growing community in North East Medicine Hat,
we will get a new school in the Ranchlands area. We believe that with
the work and dedication displayed on the part of all partners in our
learning communities within the District, this school will be a proud
and productive addition to our District.
We have a host of programs in place to support our students
to achieve all they can and this investment is paying huge dividends.
Our District has the widest variety of programs in South East Alberta.
At every meeting we have throughout the year we celebrate the exceptional
achievements of our students in sports, academics, or services to the
broader community.
So welcome - or welcome back - to our District.
It is our future, and our future is looking good.
- Terry Riley, Board Chair
BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

MEDICINE HAT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 76 BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2015-2016
Working Together to Achieve Student Success
The Medicine Hat School District has smaller class sizes, which in combination with the focus of the last three years on instructional practice,
has positively impacted student achievement. Collectively, the staff of
the district work together to provide optimal learning opportunities and
supports for student success. All schools participate in Collaborative Planning Circles, to provide an opportunity for the school team which involves
teachers, cross-ministry services, parents, support staff and central office
staff in identifying strengths, needs and interventions to support student
success. Parents and guardians are valued partners in their children’s
education and their involvement in meaningful ways makes a significant
difference in the quality of education provided.

What’s new, what’s coming?
Looking Forward:
Medicine Hat High School Modernization
We’re excited to announce the upcoming modernization planned for MHHS. The modernization is designed to meet the needs of the
21st Century learner, incorporate extensive career and technology studies and fine arts programs as well as physical education facilities.
Please watch for more information as the modernization progresses during the 2015-2016 school year!
(This shows an architectural rendering of the new gathering space and learning commons mezzanine perspective.)
New School in Ranchlands
The District is in the design stages for a new Kindergarten to
Grade 6 school in Ranchlands. The school will be designed to
accommodate 300 students, with the opportunity for expansion to 600 students in the future.
Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre
The Wilson Learning Center will have an exciting addition this year.
The school will include Grade 8 students as well as expanding
their facility to make room for the new arrivals.
MEDICINE HAT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 76 BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2015-2016
District Focus on Assessment
For the past three years, Medicine Hat School District
No. 76 has been focused on Cooperative Learning. All
teachers were trained in the cooperative approach
known as TRIBES. The majority of teachers added to
their instructional toolkit by learning Kagan Structures.
This three year cycle is now complete and our teachers have indicated a desire to layer past learnings with
assessment.
Starting in 2015-2016, District staff will focus on the
alignment of instructional practice and assessment.
Teachers will deepen their understanding of their
curriculum, how best to assess learning and to use
this information to inform their work. Staff will use
assessment for learning to give feedback that allows
for modifications and individualization for students.
Assessment as learning involves students making sense
of new information. Assessment of learning will be used
to confirm what it is that students know.
This will be a three year journey. District staff will
develop a greater understanding of assessment. This
greater understanding will allow teachers to better
meet the needs of the students. Always learning and
always growing is good news for the students of
Medicine Hat School District No. 76.

Every Student a Leader: As an extension of the Leadership
Development approach through the “7 Habits of Highly Effective
People,” Crestwood School offers three Leadership Academies for
all students in Grades 4, 5 and 6. These academies provide students
additional opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills and
principle-based living to help each child discover the “leader within.”
Grade 4 Environmental Leadership Academy: As an extension of Grade 4 Science all Grade 4 students participate in teaching
environmental citizenship, earth stewardship, recycling, etc., to the
entire school and provide leadership to several environmental projects
throughout the school year.
n ds
Hearts and Mi
The Leader in Me: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:
Crestwood School has been recognized as the first Leadership
Lighthouse School in Canada, based on the work done to
infuse the principles of the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”
into the school culture, curriculum, environment, instructional
practice, systems and traditions as we help students
recognize and develop the Leader Within Each Child.
This is a principle-based approach to character and
leadership development. Every staff member is
trained in the 7 Habits and training is offered to
parents as well.
Student Support Programs:
Crestwood School provides a wide variety of programs
and approaches designed to meet diverse student
needs. These programs include: Reading Resource
Room, Extended Grade One, Jr. Two Reading Program,
School Counselor, Mental Health Capacity Building
Program (HUG Program), A Multi-Sensory Room,
Teacher Librarian, and a Math Help Program.
Crestwood School also has a full co-curricular
program offered at noon hour and after school,
plus before and after school child supervision
program. We have three trained Learning Coaches
who support teachers in meeting student needs.
Grade 5 Leadership Through Sports Academy:
As an extension of Grade 5 Physical Education, all Grade 5 students will
experience a wide variety of sports and recreational opportunities as a
vehicle for development of leadership and sports skills, attitudes and
experiences. Students will apply leadership principles and the 7 Habits
of Highly Effective People to sport and recreation to strengthen their
leadership skills and will provide leadership to younger students in the
units they study. The program utilizes many community facilities to
experience Tennis, Indoor Soccer, Broomball, Water Polo, Golf, Baseball,
Track and Field, Fitness, Curling, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball,
Gymnastics and Dance. Community guest coaches work with our Phys.
Ed teachers in delivering this program.
Grade 6 Leadership Academy: Every Crestwood Grade 6 participates
in the Gr. 6 Leadership Academy which provides a practicum in leadership, volunteerism and citizenship based on positive character and the
principles of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Included in the
program are: direct instruction in leadership and the 7 Habits,
community and school service, lunch & learn sessions with local
leaders, and providing leadership to major school activities and events.
A highlight of the academy is the “Living Wax Museum” in which
students depict, in costume with a monologue, a leader past or
present that they have researched. Each year the Leadership Academy
students also create and participate in a Legacy Project that
provides our students with leadership opportunities

7 Habits of Highly Effective People Two-Year Cycle or Looping
All staff have been trained in the “7 Habits of Highly
Effective People”. Staff integrate the 7 Habits into
their daily teaching practice.
Student Leadership
We believe all students are leaders of themselves.
Whether we choose to or not we are all leaders.
This philosophy underlies the actions of staff and
students at George Davison.
Early Learning Programs
George Davison is the only school in
Medicine Hat that offers a “two-year
cycle” or “looping program’” where
students stay with a teacher, whenever
possible, for two consecutive years.
The benefits of this program include
increased continuity of learning and
a more stable
instructional
environment.
Early Learning Programs offer language-enriched play-based environments taught by certified teachers. A multi-disciplinary team of
professionals work together to provide programming designed to
enhance language, social, physical, intellectual, creative, cultural and
emotional development. Educators provide rich and varied
opportunities that recognize children learn and develop at
different rates and in different ways.
Before and After School Care Program
Before and After School Care Program is designed to provide
a safe and caring environment for families who require
before and after school care. The program begins each
day at 7:00am and after school until 5:45pm.
