Students, parents, teachers and support staff are all vital to the success of our District. We opened the Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre last year. Thanks to the work of everyone there the transition has been great and a thriving learning community is up and running. We are now at work on the total revitalization of Medicine Hat High School. This revitalization will make a proud school, with a history of success, into a new school which will carry on that proud tradition of success well into the 21st century. We have been assured that in order to meet the needs of the growing community in North East Medicine Hat, we will get a new school in the Ranchlands area. We believe that with the work and dedication displayed on the part of all partners in our learning communities within the District, this school will be a proud and productive addition to our District. We have a host of programs in place to support our students to achieve all they can and this investment is paying huge dividends. Our District has the widest variety of programs in South East Alberta. At every meeting we have throughout the year we celebrate the exceptional achievements of our students in sports, academics, or services to the broader community. So welcome - or welcome back - to our District. It is our future, and our future is looking good. - Terry Riley, Board Chair BOARD OF TRUSTEES: Back Row: Mr. Terry Riley (Chair), Ms. Deborah Forbes, Mr. Rick Massini (Vice Chair) Front Row: Mrs. Catherine Wilson Fraser, Mrs. Carolyn Freeman MEDICINE HAT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 76 BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2015-2016 3 August Transport ation2012 & Supplies Student Transportation Has my child’s bus route changed? Collectively, the staff of the district work together to provide optimal learning opportunities and supports for student success. All schools participate in Collaborative Planning Circles, to provide an opportunity for the school team which involves teachers, cross-ministry services, parents, support staff and central office staff in identifying strengths, needs and interventions to support student success. Parents and guardians are valued partners in their children’s education and their involvement in meaningful ways makes a significant difference in the quality of education provided. 6 What’s new, what’s coming? Looking Forward: Medicine Hat High School Modernization We’re excited to announce the upcoming modernization planned for MHHS. The modernization is designed to meet the needs of the 21st Century learner, incorporate extensive career and technology studies and fine arts programs as well as physical education facilities. Please watch for more information as the modernization progresses during the 2015-2016 school year! (This shows an architectural rendering of the new gathering space and learning commons mezzanine perspective.) New School in Ranchlands The District is in the design stages for a new Kindergarten to Grade 6 school in Ranchlands. The school will be designed to accommodate 300 students, with the opportunity for expansion to 600 students in the future. Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre The Wilson Learning Center will have an exciting addition this year. The school will include Grade 8 students as well as expanding their facility to make room for the new arrivals. MEDICINE HAT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 76 BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2015-2016 District Focus on Assessment For the past three years, Medicine Hat School District No. 76 has been focused on Cooperative Learning. All teachers were trained in the cooperative approach known as TRIBES. The majority of teachers added to their instructional toolkit by learning Kagan Structures. This three year cycle is now complete and our teachers have indicated a desire to layer past learnings with assessment. Starting in 2015-2016, District staff will focus on the alignment of instructional practice and assessment. Teachers will deepen their understanding of their curriculum, how best to assess learning and to use this information to inform their work. Staff will use assessment for learning to give feedback that allows for modifications and individualization for students. Assessment as learning involves students making sense of new information. Assessment of learning will be used to confirm what it is that students know. This will be a three year journey. District staff will develop a greater understanding of assessment. This greater understanding will allow teachers to better meet the needs of the students. Always learning and always growing is good news for the students of Medicine Hat School District No. 76. 7 ALEXANDRA MIDDLE SCHOOL August 2012 477 - 6th Street S.E.
