JRN Team -I’m finding myself saying “thanks” to you
guys a lot these days, but there’s always a good
reason for it. I wanted to let you know how much
we appreciated the assistance of the Corbin, KY
team yesterday.
As usual, Dennis, Junior and the entire team
were extremely helpful. I’m not exaggerating
when I tell you that my trips to the Corbin KFC
are my favorite restaurant visits. I usually try to
find a reason to hang around longer than I need
to just because I enjoy it so much.
As sometimes happens in our business,
things did not go exactly as planned, as an issue
with the transportation company caused us to
have to make some on-the-fly adjustments.
Dennis and the team never missed a beat, and
despite a few logistical challenges brought on by
the bus company, we ended up getting some
great footage.
We really do appreciate the partnership. You
guys are great to work with. Thanks again.

KFC Press release LOUISVILLE, KY - At
Corbin. KY on Monday, October 4th and Salt Lake
City October 6th, paying customers were asked to
postpone their lunches so the staffs could provide
free meals to the needy. Customer feedback at Corbin
was positive, with many people expressing support
for the cause and even making donations to help in
the fight against world hunger.
KFC announced that to raise awareness for
World Hunger Relief efforts, it shut the doors of its
two most historic locations – Colonel Sanders’ first
restaurant in Corbin, KY, and the original KFC
franchise in Salt Lake City. To highlight the chain’s
national campaign to collect donations for the
worldwide cause, it converted the restaurants into
“World Hunger Relief Kitchens,” serving free meals
to in-need residents from local shelters.
Only a cause as important as fighting world
hunger could inspire the owners of KFC’s two most
famous restaurants to shut their doors. The Corbin
restaurant, operated by JRN Inc., has operated since

by Harman Management Corp., has been serving
customers since 1952.
There are approximately 1 billion hungry
people around the world today. Hunger and
malnutrition are the number one risk to health
worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria and
tuberculosis combined. Among the key causes of
hunger are natural disasters, conflict, poverty,
poor agricultural infrastructure and overexploitation of the environment. Recently,
financial and economic crises have pushed more
people into hunger.

Rodney Davis
I would like to take this time to introduce
Rodney Davis, the new RGM of KFC
Humboldt Tennessee. Rodney comes from
McDonald's management team. He is also a
former schoolteacher and athletic director.
Rodney has prior KFC experience as a RGM for
three years in Kentucky and was my assistant
manager seventeen years ago in Martin
Tennessee. Rodney is married with four children,
two in college, one in high school and one in
middle school.
Rodney brings a professional attitude to
Humboldt; I look forward to him taking
Humboldt to the next level.

Goins, our new RGM at Sikeston, Missouri.
Cathy comes to us from Arby’s where she was
assistant manager for two years. In the past
Cathy worked for KFC, she said it is like riding a
bike you never forget. Cathy and her husband
James have a son Seth, age 10 and a daughter
Alyssa age 6.Cathy’s goals are to improve her
store’s public image and grow sales. Welcome to

“I observed Marcus Sanders working very hard
and performing several tasks during my visit at the
KFC on Nine Mile Road Pensacola, FL” writes a
dine-in guest.
The Milton, FL store had a drive-thru customer
to say “The employees are always nice and
considerate. I especially want to recognize Justin for
his kindness and professionalism.”
The Bardstown, KY restaurant received a
compliment from a dine-in guest, stating that Karen,
Gayle and the other employees were very nice and
the buffet food was wonderful. She said she really
enjoyed the fresh food and good customer service.
“Marty and the other employees were kind and
the service was great,” stated a drive-thru customer
of the Versailles, KY KFC.
Richmond Rd. Lexington, KY had a drive-thru
visitor to compliment Mary for excellent customer
service and further said she is one of the nicest
people she has encountered in a fast food restaurant.
“The cashiers, Ian and Anika were very
friendly and the service was excellent,”
complimented a drive-thru guest of the Gulf Breeze,
FL store.
A drive-thru customer of the N. Monroe St.
Tallahassee, FL location complimented LaShanda
for providing excellent customer service, being

nice and displays awesome customer service skills
and she is very patient.

The Massaponax Fredericksburg, VA store
had a carry out customer to write, “I just wanted to
thank the lady for her excellent customer service at
KFC. She was middle aged, but I forgot to get her
name. She was extremely nice but best of all she was
professional. I had left my cell phone in there and
had to come back. When I asked if I had left the
phone behind, the lady did not say whether or not
she had it but she asked for a description. It turned
out that she did have my phone and I was so
impressed by the extra precaution she took to ensure
that the phone was mine. In my opinion we need
more people like her. Thanks for great service and
honesty.”
A visitor of the Madison Avenue
Montgomery, AL store writes, “The young woman
who served me at the drive-thru was one of the most
pleasant, clear-speaking and helpful cashier I have
ever encountered at any drive-thru. My ticket shows
the name “Bennie” so that may be who I am
speaking of. I did not take notice of the name tag. It
was a nice change to actually understand the person
clearly through the speaker and she repeated my
order and had a good attitude that showed through
the speaker. She seemed like she was there to help
me and I don’t see that kind of service much
anymore-ANYWHERE. I just wanted to make you
aware of a valuable employee. Thank you!”

A Sad Goodbye
It is with great sorrow that we report
Quintine Jeffrey Alexander Schmidt,
grandson of Tracy Lemons, RGM at Dexter,
MO, passed away suddenly at his home on
October 12th. Our condolences, prayers and
sympathy are with the family and friends.

I want to take a moment to personally
thank Antonio, Katherine and everyone else at
"Team Harding Place" and all "7" of my
stores, managers and team, for giving 100% of
their time and commitment, and great
roundtable interaction, as they attended our
"Hospitality Works!" workshop in Nashville,
TN.
First of all ... "you guys and gals
"rock"!!!!... And you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our hospitality classes have wrapped up
this morning with 7 stores, one store each week
for 7 weeks, attending a 2 hr in the restaurant
workshop entitled "Hospitality works!" ...at the
Harding Place KFC in Nashville, TN.
We have developed a "hospitality routine"
in our area stores on a daily basis, and are really
seeing the benefits of this program! We have
tea run refills, "hospitality tray sampling," and
table to table "check ins" too.
We see how our guests’ experience is and
let them know that we are here to assist them in
any way to have a wonderful dining experience!
While it’s a great "wow" watching this
program in our dining rooms, and watching the
smiles on all the customers faces, we’ve also
noticed an added bonus to this program.

Mildred Sanders Ruggles, last surviving
daughter of Colonel Harland Sanders, died
September 25th at age 91. Mrs. Ruggles was
closely involved in the early days of the KFC
franchise, traveling around the country with her
father teaching the new franchisees the correct
way to cook chicken the Colonel’s way. The
Colonel was strict about how his signature
product was prepared and insisted that the
owners know how to do it properly.
She is survived by her son John Ruggles III
and daughter Marlona Ice, as well as five
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

I got an interesting text message today
from my sister and thought I would pass the
word on. She works close to our Harding
Place, Nashville, TN KFC and went there for
lunch today. She texted me the message below:
Whoever is at the window for KFC today
and right now is great! Funny and Fun.
I sent an email to the store asking who
worked it around 1:30 today and Kuvan called
me. I think he was expecting me to tell him
that something was wrong. I think it was great
to give them a compliment instead of
complaining and think they should know they
are doing great!!!

I just wanted to show you what we go
through a lot of times with our lobby. Today
is Wednesday lunch time and we have a
lobby full and customers waiting for tables to
eat the buffet. Some of the customers waited
because they have an hour for lunch but a lot
came in and walked out. This problem occurs
most days during lunch and also on
weekends.
Sunday evenings after church there are
not enough tables for the groups to sit, so
they leave and go to Country Cookin’ a few
miles down the road. We’ve had customers
say to us “We love your buffet but a lot of
times we just go through the drive thru
because there is no place to sit.” I know you
said the focus was the drive thru but a lot of
customers have to be turned away on the
inside due to our small lobby. So I’m asking
if you could reconsider the plans for the
lobby.

As we have been training the past 7 weeks,
without a doubt it’s really "us" the managers
and team members who have gotten the "smile"
put on our faces as its really humbling to serve
a customer a refill, check in on and sincerely
"thank a guest for visiting our KFC."
"Their smile, becomes our smile" as "our
smile, becomes their smile!"
It’s actually a reversal as you see the team
members and managers smiling from ear to ear
as they are greeting the guests and making their
dining experience a memorable one.!!!!
As we have wrapped this training
session........... Now it "lives" in each
"hospitality works!" restaurant, and it’s very
exciting to watch the program continue to
unfold and improve!!
We will make it stick!

Scammers Still At It
The phone scammers are still busy. The
International Speedway store in Daytona
Beach, FL received another of the calls
telling them that their order of shirts and hats
was going to arrive soon. The RGM,
Jeannette Stack, told them to quit calling the
stores.
Area Supervisor Mike Doran traced the
number to Gmail, meaning the call was sent
using a computer. One of the earliest phone
scams tried on JRN was from a computer used
at a prison in New York state. They’re still out
there and who knows what the next trick will
be? Train your employees to be on their guard
when answering the phone.

is FIFTY YEARS YOUNG today (10/12).

Bud Goff turning the great 50! Man where
does the time go? I saw Bud last year and he was
only 19 years old! What happened?
Yes, Bud Goff is a very fine man who is loved
and respected by all! On a personal note, Bud has
helped me unselfishly and exhaustively during
some very trying times in the Neal family. He did
so without question or hesitation.
Bud’s integrity and character are rarely paralleled
by anyone, and I am truly proud to know that Bud
Goff is a friend of mine.

Atoka DIY Makeover
Hi David and Rhonda. Hope you are doing
OK. When we talked last I mentioned that I
was gonna make the lobby beautiful since we
couldn’t remodel and asked if maybe I could
have some pictures. Well, Brenda and I worked
really hard with the help of the team, some
more than others, each night to paint the ceiling
walls and make that awful wallpaper go away.
Most of the pictures are worn faded and torn
that were on the walls so I thought I’d ask if
maybe you had some lying around that we
could put on the walls. We will take hand-medowns and be happy!!!
I did tell Wendell that, next time I tell him
I’m taking on a project, threaten to fire me. I
didn’t realize the lobby is huge!!!! I will even
come get the pictures if you have any. Maybe
we could do lunch like you mentioned before!!
Let me know please!!! All of our customers are
commenting that it looks great. Just a few more
finishing touches and we are through.

Taking Care of Business
As we all know, there is some new paperwork
and new ways of filling out old paperwork for new
hires. I have had to pull a list of all new hires every
few weeks to make sure all the correct forms are
received. I just pulled a list today and I was
impressed with 17 stores. They have already
turned in their employees’ paperwork so their
stores will not show up on the list I have to send
out next week. I do not feel like we recognize the
stores that take care of things like they should. So I
wanted to make sure I did this time. I just wanted
to tell them how much I appreciate it and keep up
the good work!

The Southern Fried Festival in Columbia,
TN was sizzling this year. On the weekend of
September 24th and 25th the downtown four
blocks around the county courthouse were closed
to traffic and filled with booths, entertainment
and food. And a lot of people too.
Bigger than ever before, the festival featured
live bands on each side of the courthouse, (No
they didn’t all play at once.) a classic car cruisein, arts and crafts vendors, a 5K run/walk, and a
pancake breakfast.
As in years past, JRN was a major supporter
and had a KFC booth at the event to sell chicken.
This year they did very well.

Above the Call
I just wanted to put in a word for Debbie
Follis (JRN Accounting) . Over the weekend
she took her personal time and helped us out at
the festival. She made a delivery of food to our
stand. We really appreciated her help. And
wanted you to be aware of her contribution to
the festival. Debbie is and has been very
helpful, she demonstrated the kind of teamwork
we strive for in our restaurants everyday. She is
a great example of walking the walk. She
jumps in there rolls up her sleeves and “gets ‘er
done!!!”

An Unexpected
Compliment
Hi there Tony,
Just thought I would share that a group of
several McDonalds managers in training came
to eat at our store Thursday afternoon and one
of them came to the counter asking for the
manager. When I went to see if everything was
satisfactory, I was pleasantly surprised with a
compliment to our store! She said that this was
the cleanest KFC she had ever been in and she
has been to a lot and their group was impressed.
I told her thanks so much for the compliment,
and our crew has been working really hard to
give our customers the best dining experience
that we can.
This meant a lot to our gang over here
coming from competitor managers! I am really
proud of our crew and just wanted to give them
some kudos in this note to you.

Keeping Up with Keeping Up
Like this turkey chasing its chick, we’re all
going to be scrambling for the holidays soon.
It’s hard to believe this year is almost over
already. So, if you haven’t taken the time to
relax and enjoy yourself lately, get some “me”
time in before you’re too busy making sure
everyone else is happy. And have safe and

Cartman and the
Colonel
South Park Loves KFC

The irreverent, not for children, cartoon
South Park has a thing for KFC. In several
episodes KFC has appeared and has been
important to the plots of two. The cartoon
features four boys as they grow through ages 8
to 9 and takes a satirical view of the world
through their eyes. This show is for adults only,
but the humor can be very immature, which is
often when it is funniest.
In an episode called “The Death of
Cartman” one of the boys, Cartman, who is a bit
of a stinker, eats all the skin off a bucket full of
KFC another boy’s mother bought for them all
while the rest are unloading her groceries from
the car. Cartman has done many awful things
before, but this is the one thing that really gets
the others angry. They shun him and won’t
speak to him, which convinces him he has died.
In another episode medical marijuana is
legalized in Colorado, the state where South
Park takes place, but KFC is made illegal. Once
again Cartman and his craving for KFC makes
the plot move as he sets up a black market deal
with the Colonel himself to smuggle KFC into
his town. This cartoon is mostly a parody of the
movie “Scarface.” In one part Cartman goes to
a methadone type clinic treating people for KFC
withdrawal with little cups of the Colonel’s
gravy. And “Corbin Kentucky” appears on the
screen briefly as the scene switches to the
headquarters of the Colonel’s black market
chicken operation. Although South Park makes
fun of almost everything, the writers must like
KFC because they give it a lot of unsolicited
product placement.
One more thing that I must say, South Park
has a disclaimer at the beginning that says, “due
to its content it should not be viewed by
anyone.” And they aren’t kidding. The main
reason I’m telling you all this is so you are
never tricked into watching it because of all
the references to KFC. Seriously!
