All bapized Chrisans who believe that Jesus Christ is truly
present in the bread and wine as the word of God declares are
welcome to receieve the Sacrament of Holy Communion with
us today. Please follow the direcons of the ushers as you come
to the altar or to a side staon. Children who have not received
First Communion instrucon are invited to come
forward for a blessing.
If medical/health concerns give you reason to avoid the wine
and bread, please remember the teaching of the Chrisan
Church that Jesus Christ is fully present in either element alone,
bread or wine. (Gluten-free wafers and white grape juice, in the
center of each tray, are also available.)

Dear Ascension Youth and Congregaon,
I can’t thank the youth, parents, staff and
congregaon enough for all the support over the last
year. I am so sad to say goodbye, but know that God
is going to do amazing things in and through this
church and youth program.

Good News From the Principal
Geng Ready for a Great New Year
at Ascension Lutheran School
This summer, we have been carefully pung the pieces in place to ensure the best possible learning environment for
our students, new and returning, to begin the year. I am happy to share some exci#ng highlights with you here:
New Faces on Campus: I am pleased to introduce our new staff members.
•
Mrs. Jennifer Farrell comes to Ascension from Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran School in West Hills where she
taught 5th and 6th grade classes. Mrs. Farrell has earned a Master of Arts in Teaching as well as a Mul#ple Teaching
Creden#al. She brings with her a love for working with students and developing a rapport with the students and their
families. Mrs. Farrell will be teaching a variety of 5th grade classes.
•
Mrs. Denise Leslie comes to Ascension from Pinecrest, Moorpark. She has earned a Bachelor of Music degree.
Mrs. Leslie will serve as our music director for K – 8 classes as well
as work collabora#vely with Pastor Chamie for Wednesday chapel
services. In addi#on, Mrs. Leslie will provide a%er school music opportuni#es.
•
Mrs. Lauranne Payne comes to Ascension from
Garden Grove Elementary. She has earned a Bachelor of Science
degree as well as Mul#ple Subject Teaching Creden#al. Her teaching
assignments have included 1st and 2nd grades as well as 5th and
6th. Mrs. Payne will join our team as a Kindergarten teacher.
Campus Update: Our facility upgrades for the summer include
renova#ons in all lower division classrooms as well as the modular
unit. This unit is being equipped to serve our students as a crea#ve
think space. The goal is to provide opportuni#es for collabora#ve
and cri#cal thinking.
From the updated facili#es, to the new qualified staff that is
joining us, each of these factors enhances our ability to support our
students in their academic excellence within a caring Chris#an
community. God con#nues to bless Ascension with loving families
and I feel very blessed to be part of this school ministry.

Thanks and So Long (connued from front)
I am energized and opmisc about the future of our youth program! We have spent the
last year working together, visioning, and trying to set the course for where we want to be.
One of our main focuses this year has been on the importance of becoming not simply
consumers of ministry, but agents. This next month will be a perfect opportunity to
connue exploring that concept. Prior to hiring a permanent youth director, the Sr. Luther League is going to
self-sustain. With the leadership of Pastor Tim, the Youth Commiee, high school leaders, and all volunteers
who will step up to this challenge, I am confident that this vision will carry forward and our group will thrive.

A Musical Farewell Tribute to
an Honored Member of Ascension

Chapel to say “Thanks, Dan” for his Professor Dan Geeng’s 32 years of fine contribuons to the life of music at CLU. He rered from CLU as of June first. Do come, and

Preparing to Meet Challenges of Long Term Care
What does Medicare/Health Insurance cover when it comes to long term care? What are the qualificaons for
state/government aid? How does the Veteran’s Administraon long term care program work? How do long
term care insurance policies work? Many families are looking for answers to such quesons, or struggling with
them while taking care of an ailing relave.
A seminar is being offered by American Senior Benefits and So Cal Vet Support
addressing those and other topics related to long term care. It’s at Atria Grand

Ascension Lutheran Church, Thousand Oaks, California, invites applicaons for the posion of a full me
Director of Youth Ministries beginning September 2016.
Mission Statement: Called to create opportunies for all people to become devoted followers of Christ.
The Church: Ascension Lutheran Church, School and Foundaon is an ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America) congregaon in beauful Thousand Oaks, California, an hour north of Los Angeles.
(Thousand Oaks is also home to California Lutheran University.) Our congregaon has 2,710 members;
we average 600-700 total aendance in our four weekend worship services. Our school includes infants
through eighth graders and it is a very central part of our ministry, with Chapel every Wednesday
morning. Ascension places a very high priority on children’s, youth and family ministries, as well as
intergeneraonal ministries. Our website is www.alcto.org.
Job Descripon and Dues:
Plans, organizes, and implements a youth acvity program for 7th-12th grades as listed below:
•
Works cooperavely with the youth commiee, church staff and others in the church, as appropriate, to coordinate youth acvies.
•
With the help of the Youth Commiee plans, organizes, implements and provides leadership for
7th-8th grades, including Confirmaon program, convenons and/or retreats and fellowship events.
•
Interacts with Day School students and staff (weekly Chapel, advisory team, performances, etc.)
•
With Help of the Youth Commiee plans, organizes, implements and provides leadership for high
school (9th-12th grades) weekly Bible study, fun oungs, community service, convenons and/or retreats (typically through the ELCA and LRCC).
•
Develops youth leadership to assist in acvies. This includes a summer planning retreat and
monthly planning meengs. Recruits adult volunteers when necessary.
Qualificaons:
•
Demonstrates a God-centered heart with a passion for working with youth of all ages.
•
Must be a Lutheran with a strong faith in Jesus Christ.
•
Must be a witness for Jesus, have enthusiasm and have compassion.
•
Demonstrates strong leadership abilies including organizaon, delegaon and program
development skills.
•
Exhibits effecve communicaon skills with a wide range of people, including groups, individuals,
and young children, as well as teenagers, staff and volunteers.
•
A college degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
•
Music abilies are desirable but not mandatory, i.e., able to lead group singing.
•
Must have a safe driving record and valid driver’s license. Must pass a fingerprint screening, drug
test and a background check.
