When we developed our new athletic logo and the “We Are
TC” phrase, the concept was to represent school pride. To
be proud of who we are. The Timothy fight song starts with
“We’re proud of the red and white.” The Timothy community
has definitely responded to this, igniting a red and white
stampede, snapping up spirit wear with our new logo.
So it’s good to be proud of who we are… but who are
we, anyway? Timothy means so many things to so many
people. For some, Timothy represents a Christian Reformed/
Dutch/multi-generational community. For others, Timothy
represents a a secure environment, an oasis among underperforming or unsafe schools. For some, Timothy is an
affordable, excellent private education. Others recognize
Timothy for our excellent athletics and outstanding fine
arts programs.
What if the answer is “all of the above”? In other words,
what if we’re more than the sum of these parts? That’s
what we’ll explore in this issue of the Reflector.
For example, Timothy’s geographic reach is surprising.
We have students who live in 58 cities. We also teach
international students who call China, South Korea, and
Thailand home. Timothy also has a broad spiritual reach.
Our students come from over 260 churches. 20 years ago,
students from the Christian Reformed Church comprised
58% of our population. 10 years ago, that percentage
was 49%. Today it stands at 38%. And yet – despite our
ever-evolving community, God has blessed Timothy with
the ability to stay true to His calling for us: to develop
academically prepared Christian disciples.
The name of this publication – The Reflector – has two
meanings. First, there’s the mirror aspect: “To show an
image of.” Secondly, there’s the thoughtful sense: “To
consider/meditate/ponder.” This edition of the Reflector
asks the Timothy community to do both. Take a look at
who we are today. Consider who God has called us to be.
Be proud to be a part of God’s plan at Timothy Christian

How I first came to
Timothy: In 2008 I
googled “Christian

What I love about
Timothy: What don’t I
love about Timothy? I
love that it feels like an
extended family. I love
that Timothy is prayerful
about everything
inside and outside the
classroom from food to
sports to parent teacher

Volunteer participation:

Biggest blessing about
serving as a volunteer at
Timothy: Feeling that I
am helping to impact the
quality of education my
children are receiving by
helping the teachers.
Biggest challenge about
serving as a volunteer
at Timothy: I don’t
really see a challenge in
volunteering because its
something I enjoy doing.
Sometimes different
volunteer opportunities
come up at the same
time making it a bit of a
challenge, but we always
make it work :)
Something surprising
about you: I’m actually
very shy. n
How I first came to
Timothy: Growing up
in Michigan, I attended
only Christian Schools
International schools, and
value the blessing of a
Christian education. So,
even before having any
children, my late husband,
Darrell Stremler, and I
moved from downtown
Chicago to the Western
Suburbs for the sole
purpose of sending our
children to Timothy
Christian School someday.
After being widowed, I
married Bob Venhousen,
a widower and a current
TCS Administrator. All
nine of our children have
attended or are attending
Timothy!
What I love about
Timothy: Administrators,
Teachers and Staff who
are not ashamed of
the Gospel and whose
love for Jesus and an
understanding that every
inch of this creation
belongs to Him informs
the way they teach and
how they interact with
the students. I like that
at Timothy we strive for
excellence in all things
because God deserves our
best, but we understand
that God’s grace, a
necessary component
of community life, is
abundant and sufficient.
I love that we are on one
campus. It makes life so
much more manageable.
I also love seeing all the
parents fellowshipping
with one another while
they are dropping off
and picking up their little
ones; it brings back fond
memories!
Hobbies: Gardening,
traveling, cooking

always a fun feast!

Biggest blessing about
serving the school
through Moms in
Prayer: It is a privilege
to pray regularly with
moms who have a
desire for their children,
all Timothy students,
and their teachers to
be in the center of
God’s Will. Praying
God’s Word releases
His power into their
lives and accomplishes
His purposes, not our
agendas. I have been
participating in Moms
in Prayer since 1996 and
attribute the discipline
of praying God’s Word for
our children every Friday
morning as the primary
reason I have been able
to be at peace with God’s
plan for their lives.
Biggest challenge about
serving the school
through Mothers in
Prayer: to impress on
other moms the honor
it is to be welcomed by
Timothy’s Administration
to pray on campus,
to have High School
students volunteer to
watch your babies or

can pray undistracted,

directed by the Holy Spirit,
for your own child!

The Breakdown
Dear Alumni and Supporters,
There are so many people who have played a role in
shaping our school. Many of you volunteer, coach, support
our student body, drive car pools, financially contribute to
the school, stop by and visit, etc…we count on you! Thank
you for the various ways in which you have made TC a
better place. Our alumni roster continues to grow as we
conclude our 101st year as an organization. It is our desire
that our alumni will always feel welcome here at TC. We
humbly ask for your continued support, and that you would
strive with us in the Lord’s work for years to come.
A thoughtful reflection about this simple phrase
By Matt Davidson, Superintendent
As I dwell on this, I feel a sense of pride. I truly believe it is a healthy and
heartwarming feeling, not a haughty feeling. But make no mistake about it—I
definitely feel proud to be a part of the “WE” in this phrase. I can’t help but think of
others who are every bit of and even more a part of the “WE,” so allow me to address
each of you with the implied understanding that words cannot possibly express my
deepest feelings.
Dear Students,
What a great group of young people! I am proud to be your
Superintendent. There are so many of you that I admire. Your
leadership is inspiring to me and the fellowship you enjoy
with one another blesses me. It is my prayer that each of you
would love and serve Jesus with passion and courage. Strive
for excellence in everything you do…set the highest of goals…
and remember that you can get there from here. Make a
difference by doing everything to the glory of God. You can
change the world.

Dear Parents, Grandparents and
Extended Families,
I have been so blessed by you and your children/grandchildren.
Together we make a larger family…the TC family. It has been
one of the great honors of my life to get to know so many
of you. I have never been involved with an organization that
holds such strong generational ties. In just these few years,
I have had the awesome privilege of fellowshipping with
you, laughing with you, grieving with you, praying with you,
celebrating with you, watching our kids grow up together,
carrying one another’s burdens, dreaming together, praising
God together and the list goes on. Thank you for your support
of TC! Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We covet
each of you and we love you.
Dear Jesus,
Where would we be without you? Where would I be
without you? It is my humble prayer that you will be
exalted in our school and that your name would forever be
adored at TC. We are excited about recent accomplishments
and new paths to explore…but we desperately desire to
give you the place of prominence at our school. Help us to
never lose hope and to remain boldly faithful and true. You
have been so faithful to us…you have been so faithful to me.
Thank you, dear Jesus, for your love and grace. It is because
of you that our school was born and it is because of you
that our school succeeds. We love you. Amen. n

So much is asked of you, and yet you work tirelessly with
an unwavering dedication. God has been good to us. Thank
you for your faithfulness and your friendship. I admire your
love for our students and your passion for Jesus Christ. I am
honored to serve with you in our journey toward excellence
and distinction. Our task is so important. I have gained
something from each of you, and I count you as brothers
and sisters in Christ. We have great adventures ahead of
us—all to the glory of God.

Timothy families are diverse. We frequently read “diverse”
as a synonym for “multi-racial.” At Timothy, we’re certainly
blessed with racial diversity (minority student body
represents 24% of our student body – and percentages are
growing at a rate of about 1% each year). But the diversity
doesn’t stop there – there’s also “geographical diversity.”
We draw families from 58 different cities and towns in the
greater Chicagoland area.

At Timothy Christian Schools, we’re
a diverse group of people who are
on the same mission.
Jesus Christ is the most important thing in our
lives. And our kids’ relationship with Him is the 2nd
most important thing. And our uncompromising
desire for the best academic education for our
kids is the 3rd. We’re not an excellent Christian
school “on top” of being a Christian school. We’re
an excellent school BECAUSE we’re a Christian
school. We want the best education for our kids
because God calls us to be difference makers in
the world – and the world is drawn to the best.
We might be Hispanic, Asian, Black or White. We
might be rich, poor, liberal, or conservative. In a
world of increasing division among diversity, it is
a beautiful and God-honoring thing to see people
from different cities, churches, culture, and socioeconomic status coming together around the same
mission. We are developing academically prepared
Christian disciples. We are TC!

“Had busing not been

“The bus drivers are
the unsung heroes of

the bus drivers are
AWESOME!”
“We absolutely love the
busing system. It is a
HUGE benefit! We also
love our bus driver”
There are many things that
make Timothy unique. Having
a Preschool through grade 12
Christian school “district” is
certainly one thing that makes us
unique. As far as we can tell, we’re
the only private, Christian, P-12 Christian school system in the entire MetroChicago area. We’ve searched, we’ve asked. We’re the only ones who own
and operate our own fleet. And what’s more – we do it with no additional
costs to Timothy families!
Anytime you’re the ONLY ones who do something, you’re either crazy – or
you’re visionary. We’re convinced that we’re the latter. Keeping the bus
service in-house allows us to offer better customer service at a cheaper rate
than if we would farm it out. We’ve looked at bids in the past- bus companies can’t get close to our “customer service” or our price.
We recently took a survey of all Timothy families who use the bus. 314 families responded and gave us a 4.35 satisfaction score on a 5 point scale. 57%
of respondents gave our bus service a 5/5!
Bus Drivers
Many of our drivers are long-time Timothy parents and grandparents
(sometimes even alums themselves) who have literally been connected and
dedicated to Timothy for their entire lives. Drivers that we hire very quickly
pick up on the ethos of loving our students. There’s a tremendous amount
of pride in seeing “Timothy Christian Schools” on the side of a bus and
knowing that they are our buses, our drivers, our routes and that children
at Timothy Christian Schools are loved from the time they step on the bus
at the beginning of the day to the time they’re dropped off after school.

Many new families that encounter Timothy for
the first time don’t quite know what to make of
our church relationships. A common question is
“Which church do I need to attend to come
here?” While this question might sound odd to
the long-time Timothy family, it’s a very
reasonable question to someone school shopping.
Many private religious schools are parochial –
a ministry arm of a specific church denomination
or congregation.

Perhaps the best way to demonstrate exactly how much
has changed in this field is to quote a previous Reflector. In
an article from the Winter 2004 Reflector entitled “That’s
Hackert, not Hacker!” a young, smiling Kevin Hackert is
pictured. The content of the article has Hackert pushing for
each teacher at Timothy to, “Be able to check their e-mail
daily.” Back in 2004, our faculty also hoped to, “Eventually be
able to look at their e-mail on their home computers.” The
article goes on to dream about “one day” being able to have
grades published behind a password-protected portal so
parents can see their children’s grades more regularly than 4
times/year. Think about that. That’s not even a decade ago.
Fast forward to today. Soon the 80 pound book bag will be
extinct. Students will be equipped with more engaging,
interactive eBooks. Equipped with lightweight tablets like
iPads, the students and teachers will better collaborate with
each other and the world around them.

What attracted you to the Timothy

Christian is a special place. God has done mighty things
through Timothy for many years.
Timothy Christian is blessed with great talent all around,
but most importantly with a team of educators that
are passionate about communicating their faith and
helping students transform the world for Christ. Living
a life of faith is the best way to witness. That is what we
have seen evidenced at Timothy and that type of godly
focus is what really matters most.
In your experience as an athletic administrator, and
strength and conditioning coach, where do you see
the intersection of Faith and athletics? Athletics has
always been a great platform for ministry work. I believe
great coaches will always preach the gospel and, when
necessary, use words. Jesus said, “…let your light shine
before men, that they may see your good deeds and
praise your Father in heaven,” - Mark 5:16. God has
placed great coaches in my life who mentored me into
a disciple for Christ. Athletics are a great tool to teach
athletes about life lessons and ultimately how they can
be great athletes and give all glory to our Father
in heaven.
Upon visiting our campus, what about Timothy’s
athletic program impressed you? The more I learn
about Timothy Christian athletics, the more excited
I have become. Clearly the strengths are quality of

What are some of the new ideas/initiatives that you
hope to bring to Timothy’s athletic program? We
are not without opportunities to be better. The first
priority will be establishing a strength and conditioning

supporting coaches, educating student-athletes and
working alongside parents are all areas I look forward to

When the 2012-13 season IHSA classifications were
announced, the Trojans of Timothy Christian were
“bumped up” a class to the medium team level. It’s
no secret that the Trojans had enjoyed success at the
small team level. The accomplished program qualified
for the state finals in 4 consecutive years, including 2nd
place finishes in 2010 and 2012.
But, with the IHSA realigning classifications based on
school size and program success, the Trojans of Timothy
Christian were placed in the medium team class. This
meant changing from competing against schools with
enrollments of 0-624 to schools with enrollments of
625-1501. A tall order for a school of 400!
Given the increased level of difficulty that comes
with jumping up a class, it would be easy to excuse
the Timothy cheerleading team for lowering their
expectations. But not these girls – and not this program!
Timothy’s athletic program vision statement calls for
“Excellence with Christ-like character.” This cheerleading
dynasty not only shows excellence in their preparation
and performances, but does so in a God-honoring way.
It’s not unusual to hear them sing praise songs on the
mat as they wait for the announcement of where their
team placed. The State tournament was no exception
as the entire team could be heard signing “Lord Prepare
Me” as they waited.
Congratulations to Coach Jokich, Coach Armstrong, and
to our dedicated, successful cheerleaders. You set a
mark of excellence that every program at Timothy can
admire. We are TC! n

Members of the TCHS Symphonic Band had the opportunity
to travel to Disney World this February. On Valentine’s Day, a
group of 39 band students, 6 parent chaperones, and director
Doug Pelt departed on the long journey south. Students had
worked hard for the trip, learning special music to perform and
selling cheesecakes to help pay their way.
After brushing their teeth in roadside rest areas and
attempting to sleep on the motorcoach, the group arrived
Friday morning at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. The park
was not open to the public yet, so the band was treated
to a delicious buffet breakfast at the Rainforest Café. After
the hearty meal, students spent the day exploring the
park, which included a realistic safari adventure, stage
shows based on “The Lion King” and “Finding Nemo,” and
a frightening encounter with the Yeti on Expedition Everest.
The first musical encounter of the trip was Disney’s “You’re
Instrumental” clinic that took place in the backstage area
of EPCOT Friday evening. During this session, the band
worked on several recognizable melodies from Disney
movies. The clinician, Jon, emphasized the importance
of playing to the best of one’s ability even if they were
reading a particular piece of music for the first time. By
the end of the 2.5 hour session, the students were able
to perform a medley of music from the movie Aladdin in
synchronization with animated video clips—an impressive
feat in such a short amount of time!
Saturday morning the students had their second musical
endeavor of the trip: an outdoor performance onstage at
18 REFLECTOR SPRING 2013
Downtown Disney. The
band performed four
pieces of music including
a medley of Disney
tunes, music from the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and a
Sousa march. Despite somewhat windy conditions, the
students played the music extremely well and conducted
themselves with a high degree of professionalism. The
audience was very appreciative of our efforts, and several
people gave the band compliments as they walked back to
the bus.
The rest of Saturday afternoon was spent at Hollywood
Studios where students could watch the live Indiana Jones
stunt spectacular, take a backlot tour, and experience
exciting rides like the Tower of Terror, Rock-N-Rollercoaster,
and Star Tours. Later in the evening, the students had a pizza
party at the hotel and were able to swim in the heated pool.
Sunday was chilly but clear for an entire day at the Magic
Kingdom. Students and chaperones alike had a full day of
riding rollercoasters, serving as Buzz Lightyear’s special
space rangers, and eating delicious food. One exciting part
of the day was exploring the recently opened Fantasyland,
which featured brand new rides and restaurants based
on “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.” No
trip to the Disney World would be complete without riding
classics like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “It’s a Small
World,” and after a long day the band boarded the bus for
the journey home.
The group arrived back home around 6:00 p.m. on
Presidents’ Day. It was a bittersweet time as the group had

For 4 out of 5 of us, while THIS year isn’t our first year, we
were once new to Timothy too. My prayer is that Timothy
continues to be a welcoming/engaging place that seeks
out the new students and families. This kind, welcoming
attitude is definitely one of the strengths of the Timothy
community. n

This recurring column is written to keep
the Timothy community informed of our
progress in the fields of marketing and

Marketing Matters
So how do we deal with this reality? We have
programs in place. Our P-8 building implements practices
from “The First Six Weeks of School” (Denton and Kriete).
Partners in Education helps orient families through a
welcoming committee and summer time activities. We
also have freshmen and new student orientation in our
high school. Beyond our programmatic solutions, it’s even
more important for all of us at Timothy – particularly the
4 out of 5 who AREN’T in their first year to seek out these
people and make sure that their “Timothy welcome” goes
well beyond their first week here.

In the Winter Reflector I shared my thoughts and
expressed my thankfulness for the generational blessing
of Christian Education. In this article I am thrilled to be
able to share with you the progress that is being made
with intergenerational programs between Timothy
Christian Schools and Park Place of Elmhurst. This
program is called the Bridges Program. What was once a
concept and a dream is now reality and part of who we
are as a Christian educational community. This special
programming allows Park Place residents to share their
lives and talents with our students. It also allows our
students to share their gifts with the residents of Park
Place by playing music, performing in theater, competing
in sports, engaging in art, volunteering, and even working
part-time.
Employment Opportunities – ongoing
When Park Place opened in February of 2012, Timothy
High School students were hired and trained as dining
room servers. Since then, they have been actively building
relationships with the residents.
Music Students – Spring 2012-Present
Starting in the Spring of 2012, Gail Salvatori, Music Teacher
at Timothy Christian High School, began playing the piano
for the residents. She continues sharing her gift for music
twice monthly. She played at the Grand Opening of Park
Place with graduate musicians and has been bringing
students and alumni to play concerts for the residents
since the spring. More recently, Gail has been playing the
violin at the monthly Park Place Birthday Dinners.

Final Exam Food Tasting – May 2012
The Advanced Foods Class at Timothy Christian High
School invited the residents of Park Place, at the students’
request, to participate in their end of the year food
tasting. Fifteen Park Place residents attended the tasting.

Wii with Residents – February 2012-Present
This was one of the first trial runs of students
volunteering at Park Place. During the spring of 2012, six

how to play Wii games. The students have continued to
come in during their study halls to spend time playing
each week.

from The Lost Bus website: “The Lost
Bus originated as an idea to simplify
our lives, live differently, and serve
others. We are three young men
who want to challenge the status
quo. All three of us are passionate
about the outdoors, helping others,
and adventure. We believe that
dedicating our time to serving others
and our environment will positively
affect the lives of those we work
with as well as our own. Lost is an
acronym for “Lending Our Services
Traveling”. The name directly reflects
our vision and mission for this
yearlong adventure. As we travel
across America, we hope to inspire
others with our unique lifestyle. We
plan to demonstrate the possibilities
to live differently, help others, and
create positive influences on our

Soccer Team – September 2012
Park Place hosted a pasta dinner for the Timothy
Christian Varsity Soccer Team and the residents. During
this dinner, Rudi Gesch introduced the team, talked
about their schedule, discussed goals for the year
and invited residents to the home games. Residents
attended games over the course of the season and
September 22nd was chosen to be the Park Place
Appreciation Game. Residents attended this game,
wearing their Park Place Booster t-shirts and had the
opportunity to interact with players and their families.
Memory Boxes – Fall 2012
Timothy Christian High School Shop teacher, Troy
Blunier, volunteered his students to help make memory
boxes for the Health and Wellness Center at Park Place
during their fall semester.
Volunteering Opportunities
Linnea Venhousen, a 2012 graduate of Timothy
Christian High School, spent time over the summer
volunteering in Memory Care at Park Place. Brain
games and art projects were highlights.
In October of 2012, Life Enrichment Directors, Lisa Stoik
and Kathy Groenendyk, accompanied by Elmhurst
College Intern, Melissa Miehlke, spoke to the students
of Timothy Christian High School during Chapel on
service opportunities at Park Place.
Since the fall of 2012, students from Timothy Christian
High School have volunteered during their study halls.
28 REFLECTOR SPRING 2013
Cast members of the Timothy Christian High School High
School fall play, The Miracle Worker, came to Park Place
(in costume) to introduce themselves to the residents
and deliver a scene from the play. Many residents then
attended the actual production on the performance days/
evenings at the HS auditorium.
There have been two groups of anywhere from 2-5
students who have been coming twice a week
to volunteer their time. These students have
participated in playing games weekly with the
residents of Assisted Living. They have also spent time
on the Skilled Nursing floors assisting with crafts for
Christmas and Valentine’s Day, playing Wii Games,
baking treats and more!
First Annual Food Drive – December 2012
This past December we held our First Annual Food
Drive between Timothy Christian High School and Park
Place of Elmhurst. Boxes were put in the main office at
Timothy and in the Bistro at Park Place. Non-perishable
food items were collected over three weeks. Residents
from Independent Living then volunteered to sort the
food and put boxes together to be sent to two families
and to the Yorkfield Food Pantry.
In closing I would like to thank Dan Van Prooyen, retired
TCS Superintendent, for serving as the Park Place liaison
and Jay Evenhouse, TCS Alumni Director, for serving
as the TCS liaison, for our Bridges Intergenerational
Program. Do not hesitate to call either of them If you
have questions or to learn more about this important
educational and initiative program. n

School Library Project
Invest in Timothy’s future
We are pleased to announce the most recent TCS
Capital Project.
The current elementary and middle school library
will be completely renovated. The Library was built
in the 1970’s and it is time for an upgrade. Upon
completion, this space will be transformed into a
bright, contemporary learning center and innovative
reading space.
The total cost of this project is estimated to be around $200,000. This is a very
exciting change for all our P-8 students. Our goal is to complete this building
project during the summer months of 2013.
