A ballast in a fluorescent light fixture failed and got hot enough to cause the ceiling tiles that the fixture was mounted against to start to smolder. The smell of smoke got the attention of some of the people that were attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting at the time down the hall. They called me and together we took down the light fixture. Soot, charcoal, and red embers rained down on to the carpet as another guy and I lowered the light fixture. One of the NA women grabbed a fire extinguisher as another person tried to get the glowing pieces of ceiling tile outside, watering them down with the garden hose out on the patio. In the end, we got all of the embers pulled down, making the carpet black with charcoal. One of our homeless friends helped clean up the mess outside and later used a steam cleaner to return the carpet to it’s original color, revealing several golf ball sized burn marks. Before I left that night we called the fire chief and had him come take a look. He took many pictures and confirmed that the fire was out and the threat was over. He wrote a full report that I will hopefully be picking up next week. 2 The next day I called our diocesan insurance lady and she contacted our insurance company. A couple of days later I met with the insurance adjuster and we are following his recommendations. On Wednesday the 24th we had the old parish hall fumigated with a special chemical that is supposed to eliminate the strong smoke smell throughout the original part of the building, including the nave and sanctuary. Soon the upstairs carpets will be professionally steamed cleaned and the downstairs carpet where the fire was will be replaced. The altar frontal will be dry cleaned as well as the various other coverings that were in the sanctuary at the time of the fire. And, of course, the light fixture will be repaired and put back in place. Our insurance deductible is $1000. Generous people from within the congregation as well as members of the community at large that value our ministries and our people have already donated half of the money needed to cover the deductible. It was our friends in NA that helped find the source of the smoke and put out the fire. It is our friends throughout the Brookings-Harbor area that are helping to pay for our portion of the cleanup. We have been blessed with a powerful affirmation of our importance in this community. I hate to think what could have been if we didn’t have such incredible support from our friends. God was watching over us that Tuesday night and our friends were too. They all continue to watch over us in the aftermath. --bernie+ 3 Diocese of Oregon Episcopal Church Women SPIRITUALITY DAY Saturday, September 21, 2013 St. John Episcopal Church, Bandon by the Sea Corner of Eighth and Franklin Streets KEYNOTE SPEAKER: THE REV. We were lucky to have his presence a day early for our Fun Day in Azalea Park. It was a beautiful day, lots of good food, fun and a chance to chat with the Bishop. There was even a piñata for the children. Mark Reaves graciously tooknbh pictures. They will be posted on Facebook. They are also available to view in the office. Bishop Hanley met with the BAC before service. We discussed St. Timothy’ past, present and future in regards to God’s calling. St. Timothy’s is definitely doing a great job. At our Holy Eucharist service Aaron Angel, Anthony Tirado and Scott Clapson were confirmed. Amanda Tirado was reaffirmed. Congratulations to all of them. Thank you all for the wonderful refreshments following the service. Scott Clapson has been giving free haircuts on Tuesdays during the Community Kitchen and Free Medical Clinic hours. He not only cuts hair but takes the time to listen to their stories. This is a very important ministry. How many times do we just dismiss others because they look different? Scoot Clapson, Carla Gotlieb, Amanda Tirado and Becky Probst will be starting a ministry to provide sack lunches on Sundays starting July 28. Sunday is the only day community kitchens are not open in Brookings. If you would like to help or donate to this cause talk to any one of them. Your help is needed! Sat., August 3 8:30 Blue Water Café Thursday August 15 5:00 PM We are looking for more people to join the choir. Rehearsals are Friday, at 11:00 AM and on Sunday at 9:15 AM. 6 Audrey Bernie Decon Dennis Gladys Glen Gru Jean Jen John Karla Kevin Laura Mary Ellen Mary Pat Murphy Paul Roger Sharon Tarah Teresa C.
