A “Day in the Life” in the
Purrfect Pals Veterinary Clinic
Did you know that Purrfect Pals runs a fullservice veterinary clinic at our Arlington
sanctuary? With the help of two Licensed
Veterinarian Technicians (LVTs) and three
Veterinary Assistants and our Clinic and
Cat Care Manager, Vikki, Veterinarian Dr.
Janet Gray provides medical care for our
150+ short and long-term residents as
well as the cats and kittens in our foster
homes and ten offsite adoption centers
around the Puget Sound region.
At Purrfect Pals, we believe that each
and every cat matters and our highest
priority is taking in the cats and kittens
who need us most… those that other
Puget Sound shelters and rescue
groups might not have the resources to
help. This includes older cats, cats with
major medical needs, cats with chronic
illnesses (including FIV and Feline
Leukemia) and those with behavioral
challenges. Cats who are not easily
adoptable have a forever home in our
sanctuaries.
Patience, flexibility, excellent juggling
skills and a great sense of humor are
definite requirements for anyone who

The Purrfect Pals clinic staff begin each
morning with a full schedule for the
day. First up are the 50+ residents who
will receive oral, injectible and topical
medication for a variety of conditions.
Gary, who is recovering from surgery
to repair his broken leg, is given pain
medication. Our office kitty Baby Punk,
a middle-aged girl with diabetes, arthritis
and a chronic eye issue, is distracted with
treats while the vet tech gives one of two
daily Insulin injections, eye ointment and a
Cosequin pill. Others are being medicated
for liver and kidney disease, allergies,
ringworm, hyperthyroidism, heartworm,
autoimmune disorders, upset stomachs,
diarrhea or constipation, eye herpes and
urinary tract infections.
On this particular day, ten cats who are in
the late stages of kidney disease are given
subcutaneous fluids to improve hydration
and make them more comfortable. Six
diabetic cats, Baby Punk, Molly, Anchor
Blue, Knox, Tutu and Lady of the Lake,
receive insulin injections.
Then the foster parents start arriving to
drop off their litters of kittens that are
scheduled for spay and neuter surgery
and other procedures that day. Vikki

the
“Dear Tabby...”
Cat behavior advice from Tabigail Van Purrin’
D
ear Tabby,
Two months ago we adopted the sweetest little
1 year-old cat named Tom and fell head over
heels in love. He’s changed our lives so much
– we always say he rescued us instead of the
other way around – but we’re having one
problem we just can’t figure out how to solve.
Tom is a neutered male kitty in a single-cat
household, but for some reason, while he starts
out squatting in the litter box, as he pees he
gradually stands up, spraying the wall behind
him. We tried a covered box, but the urine just
dripped down the inside of the lid and then
leaked out the space where the top meets the
bottom. I found some high-sided litter boxes
for sale online, but the sides weren’t nearly
deep enough; he’s like an Olympic Champion
High-Pee-er. At the moment, I have puppy
pads taped to the wall, but it’s expensive and a
nuisance, not to mention pretty gross.
Why does he do this and what can we do
about it? Can we somehow teach him to pee
properly? Or do you have any better ideas
on how to work around the problem? (Note:
we took him to the vet to make sure he didn’t
have a urinary tract infection or some other
physical issue, but he checked out fine!)
Signed,
Wall o’ Pee
Dear Wall o’ Pee:
Great question, as this is a lot more common
than you might think! My little brother, The
Unholy Terror (as I call him), does that same
thing, and we tried a bunch of stuff before
landing on the solution, so I have some real
first-paw knowledge on this one.
The bad news is: I have bad news. But the good
news is: I have good news! Hang in there until
I get to that second part; it’s coming up quick.
First that bad news: while this could be
territorial spraying, it doesn’t really sound like
it to me (and it definitely wasn’t that for Unholy
T.). Spraying cats usually start in a standing
position, not in a full-on squat, and since yours
is a one-cat household, it’s not as likely he’s
being territorial about his litter box (Tom,
buddy, that box is all yours, son).
Instead, I’m betting this is the same problem
Unholy T. has, which I would describe as a
“woeful lack of potty training” – I’ll just go
ahead and blame his mother for that, for no
other reason than she’s unlikely ever to read
this.
Unfortunately, while you can address actual
spraying/territorial behavior, there isn’t
anything you can really do about a cat who
can’t figure out he’s supposed to squat like
Dan Wilson behind the plate when he heads
to the dugout, so to speak (sorry, it’s baseball
season). Since he checked out physically, this
is probably something he does because he
doesn’t know any better and it doesn’t bother
him the way it bothers you. Cats. I tell you
what. (Wait. . .)
The good news, though, is that there’s a pretty
easy solution to your wall o’ pee problem, and
that solution is . . . drumroll please . . . a big The Unholy T. about to reach new heights in
our anti-wall-o-pee litter box solution.

The 18th Annual Black Cat Ball
Help Make the Auction a Huge Success!
We keep insisting that you can make a
difference in the lives of cats and kittens
in our community. That’s because you
do! Purrfect Pals is supported entirely by
donations, mostly modest ones that, when
added together, make our work possible.
And all those tables and tables of fabulous
items up for auction...are donated. It’s true
that some of those donations are made
by hotels, airlines, artists, restaurants and
jewelers. Most, however, come from cat
loving Purrfect Pals supporters like you.
Do you own a lakeside cabin, and would
be willing to give a weekend stay?
Could you give up a week stay at your
timeshare? Imagine the bids - and the
money to help rescue a dozen moms
and litters of kittens - it would garner!
Do you have season tickets to the opera,
symphony, Seahawks or Mariners games,
and could give up just one night/game?
always popular, as are fine wines, artisan
beers and spirits, electronics, garden art...
Most of the money earned at auction is
from smaller items, all added together!
What do you do for a living? Almost any
service or item offered would appeal
to somebody. Do you quilt? Knit? Make
jewelry? Weld steel garden creatures?
Have you inherited some wonderful
collectibles you don’t have room to display,
or jewelry you know you won’t wear?
Or could you nerve yourself to ask for a
donation from just one store or restaurant
you regularly patronize? Most businesses
do have budgets for charitable donations,
and they want to please their customers.
We need the modest donations, too: a
package of kitty note cards, the small
quilted table runner, the coffee basket,
the scratching post or cat bed, the $20 gift
card or the brand new cookbook you’ve
never cracked open. Kitchen items are
We’ve again made this easy for you. We

We can pick up items if you are unable

every penny raised at the Black Cat Ball
goes to caring for the cats of Purrfect Pals!

which is home to several kitties. They are

receiving end of life hospice care.
Later, the team will clean the rest of
the clinic and prepare equipment and
instruments for the next day’s surgeries.
In the meantime, she stays busy preparing
fecal samples that were dropped off when
the foster kittens arrived and sends them
off to the IDEXX laboratory.
Vikki will check all of the lab results from
the previous day’s tests and, if they show
that a kitty has worms, coccidia, giardia
or other parasites, one of the LVTs or
Assistants will draw up the medications
that will go home with the kittens and be
given by their foster parents.
Our clinic staff has a very tight schedule
which will keep them busy all day. In a
cat shelter, however, few days ever go
as planned. We just never know who will
walk through the door with dirty, wet and
hungry kittens that were found in a wood
pile or a foster cat that started vomiting
the night before and needs a check-up
from Dr. Gray.
The team also provides a free spay and
neuter clinic for low-income cat owners
2-4 times each month. We also offer low
cost vaccines and flea treatment for these
surgery patients.
As you can imagine, this level of care
does not come cheap. Veterinary clinic
supplies, staffing and laboratory services
are by far the largest of our expenses and
we rely on donations from cat lovers like
you in order to continue providing them.
If you share our belief that every cat
matters, please take this opportunity to

I am writing to tell you what a wonderful thing it
is to adopt a needy cat. I just lost a very beloved
cat, rescued twelve years ago. Sully was just
two weeks old when his mother went missing.
The setting was a family member’s home in
Concrete, where the cat are “just barn cats.”
When I found the little guy, he was dragging his
back legs and looking for his mommy. I found a
medicine dropper and he took some milk right
away. Needless to say, I tool him home after
seeing his fighting spirit. I loved that cat for the
twelve wonderful years I had with him. We are
missing him so very much. He was a talker and
called me “Momma” just as plain as day! Sully
died of cancer but had the FIV virus since he
was very young. I was blessed that I had him
that long. I want to encourage people to take a
chance on adopting “special needs” kitties.

Brutus
life, and the two of them became fast friends. With
the addition of Spot, a HUGE semi-feral tabby, the
three have actually formed a bonded triplet. The
kitten helped break down behavioral boundaries
by aggressively leaping onto Spot’s tail for hours,
as kittens do (Spot ignoring her all the while
with mock indifference) and then chasing Brute
around the cat trees. They are now always to be
found grooming each other, sleeping in a tight
ball in the center of the bed.
Larry Caracciolo
I adopted Brutus in 2010 from the Everett Mall
Petsmart. I’d just lost 15 yr-old Sasha to kidney
failure, and her 11-yr old brother Frederick was
heartbroken over the loss. Brutus was an older
cat, at 9, and was surrendered because his owners
adopted a new puppy. He looked so lost and
unhappy that I knew that he and Frederick would
become fast friends. At first, they were hesitant
but Fred being the alpha cat started playfully
chasing Brute around the apartment. Soon after,
they began sleeping on the bed together.
Sadly, in 2013, Frederick succumbed at 14 to
cancer, and Brutus hid underneath the bed for
four days, refusing to eat or drink. By chance (or
fortune), the apartment manager called me to
take in a 4-week old kitten found in an empty
apartment, apparently left behind by the former
tenants. The kitten gave Brute a new chapter in
I just wanted to let you all know that our adoption
of “Mr. Gray” from the Everett Petsmart a month or
so ago has been a wonderful experience. He was
given his furever name, Zeddicus Z’ul Zorander,
but we call him Zedd (and occasionally Baby
Bear).
Zedd and Kali (our other kitty) were a little nervous
at first, but they’ve integrated quite well. There
are two items of note for this little guy... He is a
literal and figurative stinker! :) If he gets scared or
uncomfortable, he definitely has no qualms trying
to stink us out (he actually makes my boyfriend’s
more gaseous moments seem... pleasant... LOL)
and he tends to get over-excited when playing
and can sometimes get a little rough.
Kali has been very good with him. She shows him
the Cat tree and all the toys in their room (They
pretty much have the entire living and dining
areas as their room... They get more than we do!
LOL) and allows him to play with any of them that
he find interest in without complaint.
Zeddicus likes to drag things around the house.
We actually have to spend about a week trying to
outsmart him so he’d stop dragging the auto-fill
water dish all over their room. (It’s been zip-tied
to the bottom of a box... there is no lid and the far
side from the water dish has been cut away. He
cannot remove it from the box, and he has thus
far been unable to drag the box. LOL). He will
drag chew toys and his teddy bear all over the
house with him, so we are constantly reminding
ourselves to be careful where we step!
Having him here with us in his Furever Home is
a real joy. He is full of surprises, has an amazing
personality, and has been just a great experience
for us already. Zedd is happy, healthy, and greatly
loved. He’s spoiled rotten, and his new sister is
teaching him proper kitty etiquette daily.. (This is
where we watch the birds... but don’t try to climb
the screen! Run into Mommy’s room when the
evil loud noise-maker starts up, you’re almost
always safe there! Say hello to visitors and delivery
people, but never never go out into the hall... it’s
very strange and stinky out there..)
Truly, they’re well on the way to a fantastic pair.
Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt
Zeddicus into our home and family.

Thank You for Helping Save Gary’s Leg!
The Tipper Fund pays for extraordinary surgeries and vet procedures that demand resources beyond our ability to offer without special
help. Here is just one example of a Purrfect Pals cat who benefited from donations to this fund:
After Surgery
donated and/or shared Gary’s story and the wonderful staff at
Seattle Veterinary Specialists, who performed his surgery. We
are very grateful to be part of such a generous community of
cat lovers. We will keep you posted on Gary’s progress!
Look who’s feeling better already? We are thrilled to share that
Gary, our friend with a broken leg, made it through surgery
with flying colors! He is now on cage rest for at least four
weeks while he recovers. He’s enjoying cuddling with his
stuffed animals and receiving top notch veterinary care from
Dr Gray and the crew in our shelter’s clinic.
This VERY sweet and affectionate five year old kitty was
surrendered to one of our partner shelters earlier this week.
His owners requested that he be euthanized because he had
a broken leg but we offered to take him in and provide him
with the medical care he needs.
