Winter 2015
Purrfect Pals Sanctuary Tour:
The Florida Room
At Purrfect Pals we strive to make special
needs cats, including seniors, a high
priority because they often have so little
chance at many shelters, and because
they are so quick to steal our hearts.
Imagine a sweet cat that was indooronly for twelve years, dearly loved by
an old lady. The owner dies or develops
Alzheimer’s and must go into assisted
living, and family doesn’t want the cat.
Suddenly, kitty finds herself abandoned
outside, or in a small cage at a shelter
with peculiar food in a bowl inches from
her litterbox. Strangers stare at her and
say, “Oh, she’s twelve. We want a younger
cat.” Depending on how crowded that
shelter is, she may be euthanized within
days if no one takes her.
Cats may not be able to reason like
humans can, but they feel bewilderment,
fear and grief as powerfully as we do.
They’re often hopeful for a few days at
the shelter; perhaps this is temporary
and they’ll be going home any minute.
Then they get depressed and quit eating.
The saddest part is that these are often
wonderful cats. They’re kind, patient,
loving, and particularly well-behaved.
What could be more companionable
than a cat who wants nothing more than

ear Tabby,
Our 15 year-old cat Sabrina recently passed
away. It’s been hard on our entire family, but
one family member in particular seems to be
suffering the most and we just don’t know what
to do. That’s Sabrina’s brother Chester (they
were littermates and have never been apart
since they were born).
The first day or two, he seemed okay. But in the
weeks since, he’s changed. He wanders around
the house yowling for seemingly no reason,
and sometimes is even aggressive with us (so
unlike him). More alarmingly, he’s started to
lose some of his hair, doesn’t always finish his
meals (also so unlike him!), and never wants to
play anymore.
Our vet did a full exam and found nothing
wrong; she said he might simply be grieving. Is
that true? He can’t talk to us about his feelings,
obviously, so we just don’t know what he needs
or how to help him. Should we get another cat
so he has a companion again? What can we
do?
Dr. Janet Gray, Shelter Veterinarian

Sabrina’s Grieving Family

Dear Fam,
First off, I am so sorry for your loss. Truly, I
have no words (and not just because I’m a cat
who technically can’t talk either). My heart
goes out to all of you.
Great job taking Chester in for a vet check right
away – you’re clearly primo kitty parents. Since
physical issues have been ruled out, I think
your vet is right that Chester is grieving, and
yes, not only do cats grieve, but they do it in
ways fairly similar to the way you humans do.
I mean, I may gripe about the Unholy Terror
(AKA my adopted brother), but if he were to
suddenly up and disappear, I would miss him
just like Chester misses Sabrina. When a cat
loses a buddy, even a buddy as obnoxious as the
Unholy T., all kinds of things get thrown out of
kilter. Not only has Chester lost his sister and
closest companion, but cats are hierarchical by
nature, and his entire hierarchy has become
unbalanced and confused.
In addition to the signs you have noted, grief in
cats can lead to changes in sleep, withdrawal,
and depression or anxiety. Because loss is
stressful, stress hormones are also being
released in Chester’s system, which could
explain the hair loss (another possibility there
is stress-induced overgrooming), as well as
Because you’ve already ruled out a health
problem for Chester, let’s explore some ways
you can help him through the grieving process.
On average, this stage can take between 2
weeks to 6 months in kitties, according to an
article entitled When Cats Grieve by Sarah
Hartwell*. During this time, you should try to
reassure and comfort Chester as much as you
can. Don’t force him to interact with you if he
doesn’t want to, but consider stepping up the
praise, treats, catnip, new toys, and affection.
Dote on your boy, in other words.
Many people wonder if it might help to get a
new companion for their grieving kitty right
away. This is a gamble, in my opinion. For
a really sociable kitty, it might be just the
thing. But other cats may see the new cat as
an invader to their territory, which is already
in a state of major upheaval. For that reason,
I’d suggest giving Chester a little more time to
adjust before adopting a new friend for him.
When you feel Chester’s ready, I’d suggest
talking to one of the amazing, knowledgeable
adoption counselors at Purrfect Pals – not only
can they help you find the right new feline
family member, but they have hearts of gold,
to boot, ready with heaps of compassion and
respect for the loss you have all suffered. If
you do decide you’re ready to adopt, be sure
to go extra-slowly with the introductions for
Chester, giving him plenty of time to adjust (for
more on introducing a new cat to your family,
see Dear Tabby in the Summer 2014 issue of
The Purr: http://purrfectpals.org/wp-content/
uploads/2014/03/The-Purr-Summer-2014.pdf).
In the meantime, give your little furball lots
of love and patience, and keep a close eye
on him for any signs of worsening anxiety
or depression. If he isn’t getting better, zip
him back to your vet for more professional
assistance. Sometimes medications can help, as
can over-the-counter stress-relieving products
like Feliway, which we use at Purrfect Pals.
I’m so sorry about your loss, so moved by the
capacity of human love for us kitties, and so
happy you found both your furbabies when
you did. I have no doubt Sabrina had a truly
wonderful life. Give Chester, and yourselves,
an extra scritch behind the ears from me.
Headbutts and nose boops,
Tabigail van Purrin’

or on your lap, to sleep curled
at your side come night, who
knows you saved him?
No shelter wants to euthanize
cats but the reality is that, in
many open-admission public
shelters, there are still far too
many older cats than they
have the resources to care for.
Our goal is to meet the needs
of these cats who too often
fall through the cracks.
We believe that every cat is
adoptable - some just need
a little longer than others. It
was with this in mind that we
created the Florida Room, a
sanctuary for older cats.
Once known as our Geriatric
Room or Feral Land, Florida
was designed to be a quiet
and peaceful retirement home
for these special cats. Florida residents are
typically older (aka “vintage”) kitties, many
with medical issues that make them more
challenging candidates for adoption.
Florida is also home to other cats who
appreciate a calm atmosphere including
older semi-feral cats and cats in hospice
care.
Marz
Florida is located in one of our remodeled
buildings which includes a large outdoor
enclosed yard. On sunny days, Florida
residents enjoy chasing bugs, snacking
on grass and getting plenty of fresh
air. Soaking up the sun during an
afternoon nap in the yard is a popular
activity in this feline senior center.
Some of our Florida residents have
lived at Purrfect Pals for only a few
months and others, like Katundra,
have been here for many years.
Katundra was feral when she came
to live with us but has come to realize
that it isn’t worth the effort to hiss at
the volunteer who brings her canned
food every afternoon or the staff
members who clean her litter box
every morning.
Phoebe is only five years old but is in
the late stages of kidney failure and
prefers the company of older folks
like fourteen year old B. Scotchie, who
suffers from a seizure disorder.
Dulce is semi-feral but, at the ripe
old age of fifteen and a half, doesn’t
have the energy (or teeth) to become
a barn cat. Living in the safety and
comfort of the Florida Room is a

better option for this pretty girl.
Snickers is a sweet fifteen year old
boy who was suffering from Feline
Hyperthyroidism when he arrived.
We were able to treat it but, sadly,
he is now in renal failure as well. He
will have a home here with us for as
long as he needs one.

Ten year old Marz was found as a
stray and was suffering from an
ear infection and a painful urinary
blockage and other issues when he
came to Purrfect Pals. Ideally, we
would find him a loving home, but
his ongoing inflammatory cystitis
and chronic eye infections are a
challenge.
Though we do happily adopt out
older cats whenever we can, we
are typically unable to send cats
who are in need of medical care
to our offsite adoption centers.
Living in our sanctuary rooms like

We have set some lofty
fundraising goals this year
which, if met, will allow us
to increase the number of
special cats we can help.
We hope we can count on
our community to help
us offer second chances
to the cats who are often
overlooked.
When you are next in the
Smokey Point area, please
consider stopping by our
sanctuary to visit the cats
in the Florida Room. Few
things bring these vintage
kitties more joy than
unexpected visitors who
are willing to sit with them,
carry on conversations
with them and show them
that they are loved and
wanted. Even half an hour

our Shelter Veterinarian and our team of
clinic assistants, veterinary technicians
and cat care specialists. Our employees
administer medications twice daily to
those who need them, examine the cats
on a regular basis and weigh them weekly
to closely monitor them for weight loss.
Unfortunately, depression is common in
older cats. It doesn’t take long for them to
stop eating and for that loss of appetite to
become life threatening.
Providing the level of care that older cats

Cedric (now “Sir Fuzzy Butt”) is purrfect for us!
-Craig and Florence Snow
My wife and I adopted Jacksun from Purrfect Pals/
Petsmart located at the Everett Mall. Since that
time, we cannot imagine life without him. Jack is
already very attached to us and we love him as if
he was our own child. We have had cats for pets
for the last forty years and it is very hard to see
them pass away. Jacksun is very happy here with
us and I hope he is with us for many years.

Sunny
Here is a photo of our Purrfect Pals kitty, Summer
Sunburst (now “Sunny”), who we adopted on
October 10, 2009. He is now five years old and
living near San Francisco.

We are currently permanent foster parents for
two FIV+ Purrfect Pals kitties - Quigley and Gage.
Gage was with you for over five years waiting
for us to bring him home. Thank you for taking
such good care of him for us! They are both very
special kitties and we are blessed to have them.
-Joe and Cherie Hensdell
Oreo wanted to say “Meow” and thank you all for
helping as many kitties out there as you can. She’s
been part of our family for over six years now.
She’s eight years old. We love her so much. Can’t
imagine a day with her not being in our lives.

Gato and Sugar
I thank Purrfect Pals every day for making sure
Gato and Sugar were placed together. They are
such wonderful companions to me and each
other. November 11th, they celebrated their third
anniversary with me in their forever home. Gato
is nine years old now and Sugar is eight. This is
the first bonded pair I have ever adopted and I
have recommended to all my cat loving friends
that, when they consider adoption, they think
about a pair. Gato and Sugar are the fourth and
fifth cats I have adopted from Purrfect Pals. They
were preceded by Friskie, Lucy and Katze.
-Norene Townsend
We’re so excited to have Rascal here for his first
Christmas with us! We adopted him from the
Lynnwood Petsmart on December 30, 2013.
He’s been “helping” wrap gifts, too! Rest assured
he will be very spoiled on Christmas Day (not to
mention the other 364 days of the year)!
-Barbara and Gary Iverson
I love my cat “Lindi” who I adopted from you!
-Betty McLellan
Kodiak
We adopted these two, Lily and Aly, over the
summer at an adoption event at Everett Petsmart.
They’re only napping because of all the mischief
they get into with the Christmas decorations!
-Sarah Tremayne
We adopted Tica from you guys at an event last
year at the Everett PetSmart. She is PERFECT. So
sweet and snuggly and the perfect addition to
our family. A lot has happened in the almost 2
years we’ve had her - including a baby girl added
to the family:) she’s the best cat and we don’t
know what we’d do without her! Thanks Purrfect
Pals!!
-Bethanie Hardwick
My cat Cecilia is doing wonderful and is going to
be 15 years old in February. Thanks for all you do!
-Dionne LaSalla
Peabody (Polaris) enjoyed his first
Christmas in his new home very much.
His favorite part was helping to wrap
gifts!
-Joe Puhlman
A little over a year ago we adopted
Kodiak from you. He brings us so
much entertainment! He loves talking,
playing fetch with hair ties and hanging
out with his BFF Kasper. Thank you for
giving us this wonderful kitty!

Purrfect Endings
Hi! We’re just checking in with an
update on Zelda. We adopted
her last year. Or she adopted us.
She was almost 17 lbs when we
adopted her. The vet said she
should be no more than 10 lbs!
That’s a lot of weight to lose. She
was put on a special prescription
diet. She was pretty sure we were
starving her. But as of today she
weighs 9 lbs! She’ll move to a
maintenance program to keep the
weight off. At 11 years old the extra
weight was very unhealthy for her.
She used to be very sedate and not
very active. She would often prop
herself up against a wall to hold
herself up. Now she runs, plays
and climbs on counters and the
Clara Bea
This is Clara Bea, we adopted her two weeks ago
at the kitten event in Everett. She is the sweetest
little kitten and the best at snuggles. We love
having her as part of our family, and I think she
loves it too! Here she is snuggling with my son last
night !
-Ashley Malins
My baby GusGus, formerly known as Oliver Bob,
has come a long way from the timid and shy cat
he used to be. He now talks up a storm and he just
ate treats from my hand. He is my cuddle bug - all
16lbs of him.

food). She attacks her scratching post and loves
running the stairs. We are happy that she’s healthy,
happy and will be with us longer.

Hi I’m Fleet and my new parents, Mark and Juanita,
adopted me in December just before Christmas.
Juanita was very sad because her 17yr old cat had
died recently and the other cat, Ivan was lonely.
In less than a week, Ivan was playing with me and
even sharing the king size bed he also allows the
humans to use. Mom says I am perfect coz I’m
affectionate, playful, love to snuggle and a little
goofy. I am so glad I picked these humans for
my own. Thank you Purrfect Pals for bringing us
Fleet
