FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Ever since I arrived in this Parish, I decided to be in touch with you with a personal reflection published on our Sunday Bulletin. A
reflection based on the Sunday Gospel has been written faithfully every week for the last few years. Given the fact that the
Church’s lectionary (the distribution of readings for Sunday Mass) covers the full of Scripture in three years, and now the threeyear cycle is complete, I have decided to move from a reflection related to the Sunday Gospel, to reflections that somehow relate to
different every-day experiences that affect our Parish Life and Faith community.
In an attempt to promote better communication in our Faith Family, we will also be shifting the format of our Sunday Bulletin. We have requested a color front page hoping it will provide us with the opportunity to use better and more attractive pictures;
at the same time, we will be adding an extra page to the main body of the bulletin in the hope of gaining some extra space to share
with you all the Good News of Salvation and the different events that are happening in our Parish community. We will continue to
select serious and beautiful spiritual reflections for I know how important it is to have access to this type of material when searching in the ways of the Spirit. I hope this new project regarding our Weekly Bulleting can be as exciting for you all as it is being the
planning for us all here in the office. I hope all of our Parishioners as well as those who visit our Church, can see our Bulletin as the
perfect tool to learn more about our happenings, to enhance their Spiritual Life and to come to better know the Lord and love our
Blessed mother even more.
Remember to take a copy of our bulletin home every Sunday, do not hesitate to bring an extra one for a family member of
friend who did not make it to Church or is home confined. A digital copy is also found in our Parish web site
(www.olmcparish.org) and I am confident this possibility can reach far beyond our boundaries and touch the hearts and lives of the
many who faithfully search for it every week. If anyone wishes to have a hard copy mailed home, please do not hesitate to contact
our office. We are glad to make this a possibility available to all.

Desde que llegue a la Parroquia (hace más de cuatro años), he procurado compartir con ustedes una reflexión basada en el Evangelio Dominical. El boletín semanal ha sido es espacio perfecto para hacerles llegar a cada uno de ustedes, mis pensamientos sobre el
Evangelio. La distribución que la Iglesia hace de las lecturas dominicales, cubre la toda la Biblia en un ciclo que dura tres años.
Habiendo pues realizado un comentario semanal a todo el Leccionario, he decidido llenar este espacio, ya no con reflexiones relacionadas al Evangelio Dominical sino a las diversas situaciones que van surgiendo en nuestra comunidad de Fe.
En un intento por hacer de nuestro boletín semanal un medio de comunicación más efectivo, hemos pedido a la compañía
que lo imprime de colocar una portada a color además de agregar una página extra; con esto esperamos mejorar y aumentar este
espacio por medio del cual podemos compartir con ustedes todas las actividades que se llevan a cabo aquí en nuestra comunidad de
Fe. Esperamos también que las reflexiones espirituales que compartimos, sean una herramienta efectiva para acrecentar nuestra fe y
la experiencia de Dios en nuestras vidas. Deseo firmemente que este proyecto se vuelva algo que entusiasme a nuestros parroquianos de la misma manera que nos ha entusiasmado aquí en la oficina al organizarlo. Ojalá el Boletín Semanal mejorado y aumentado
nos ayude a acrecentar nuestra participación en la comunidad y sus eventos, afine nuestra experiencia de Dios, y nos haga crecer el
amor hacia nuestra Madre del Cielo.
Recuerden llevar con ustedes una copia del Boletín cada Domingo cuando vengan a Misa. Si conocen a alguien que no
puede salir de casa o no vino a la Iglesia esa semana, asegúrense de llevarse uno extra para que lo compartan. También es posible

oportunidad para que aquellos que se encuentran distantes, puedan consultar allí toda la información que compartimos con ustedes.

Non è una religione facile quella che Gesù propone alla folla che lo segue lungo la strada. Il vangelo parla di «molta gente»: non si
tratta quindi di parole rivolte in particolare ai monaci o ai religiosi, ma a quel vasto movimento popolare che il Cristo ha fatto sorgere in Palestina, e alla moltitudine di tutte le razze che nel corso dei secoli decideranno di camminare con lui. La maggior parte di
loro ha scoperto nel suo vangelo un libro meraviglioso, colmo di sapienza divina e di tenerezza profondamente umana. Ma che dire
della durezza di certe pagine che esigono rinunce radicali? È ragionevole preferire nulla all’amore del Cristo, neppure i legami
dell’affetto più legittimo, e prendere la propria croce rinunciando a tutto per essere suoi discepoli?
Sicuramente no! Ma se vogliamo essere «ragionevoli», non avremo mai quel coraggio evangelico che contraddistingue gli autentici
discepoli di Gesù. In un mondo dominato dal materialismo pratico e dai nuovi idoli del potere, del sesso e del denaro, ci vuole spesso dell’eroismo per continuare ad essere cristiani. Il Vangelo può aiutarci allora a riscoprire il prezzo della grazia: una grazia da
conquistare, e non quella grazia a buon mercato di cui ci accontentiamo tanto volentieri.
D’Altra parte, questi inviti al distacco radicale in definitiva sono sempre motivati dall’amore e dall’attaccamento a una persona:
Gesù, senza del quale il cristiano è come un Cristoforo Colombo senza America; Gesù, che bisogna amare sopra ogni cosa. Perché
lui per primo ci ha amati e ha offerto se stesso per noi. Perché si diventa ciò che si ama. Se ami il denaro diventerai un oggetto. Se
ami il Cristo, sarai figlio di Dio.
Sapere ciò che si vuole— Un uomo che costruisce una casa senza sapere se potrà terminarla; un generale che parte per la guerra
senza calcolare le sue forze; un fedele che incomincia accedere nel Regno, ma che non osa andare fino in fondo: tutti costoro devono distinguere il necessario dal superfluo ed essere meno superficiali. Luca si serve di questo esempio per mostrare come l’imminenza del Regno si opponga ad un certo tipo di rapporti con le persone o con i beni. Per un cristiano, vivere attaccandosi ai beni o
alle relazioni umane è solo un’illusione; ma ce n’è un’altra altrettanto grave: cioè rinunciare agli effetti e agli attaccamenti, col pretesto che il Regno è vicino. In realtà, proprio perché il Regno è vicino, il cristiano utilizza anche i beni della terra e stringe dei legami con gli altri, ma sempre passando per il Cristo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Sometimes, this “Treasures” column can seem to
be a species of crib-notes for Catholic Jeopardy. Indeed, you may never know when knowledge of our
particular vocabulary may come in handy. Such is the
case with papal bulls, which conjure up all sorts of images, but are actually not what you might expect. A
bull is a papal letter on a matter of great consequence,
such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the declaration of a doctrine, the summoning of a council, or
the canonization of a saint. It has a more solemn intention than a mere letter or even an encyclical, a teaching
letter circulated through the whole Church. Its odd
name comes from the Latin bulla, which is the stamp
used to apply a signatorial design to the hot lead, or
even molten silver or gold, that seals the decree.
The format for the bull is the name of the pope in
Latin, followed by the title “servant of the servants of
God,” also in Latin, and then the text. The title of the
bull is always the first two words of the text. Some famous papal bulls are Exsurge Domine (Arise, O Lord),
written against Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses in
1520; Munificentissimus Deus (The Most Bountiful
God), the promulgation of the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salutis
(Human Salvation), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in 1962.

Riceverei la tua ricompensa alla risurrezione dei giusti.
Gesù non si rifiuta di accettare inviti a pranzo dai notabili del tempo; non ha paura di farsi vedere insieme a chi non è accolto tra le simpatie della gente comune. Non vuol dare scandalo e neanche vuol approfittare delle generosità altrui. Egli va sempre e solo dove c'è bisogno di Lui, della sua parola, Parola di
vita. Nel rispetto delle singole persone ha sempre quell'insegnamento e quella parola capaci di conversione. Nell'episodio che oggi la liturgia ci propone, Gesù si rivolge prima ai commensali e poi direttamente al padrone di casa, evidenziando - per correggere - delle eventuali ipocrisie. L'insegnamento di Gesù è
però per tutti noi. La contabilità di Dio non è paragonabile alla nostra contabilità. In genere noi, nelle
nostre azioni, chiediamo sempre un contraccambio. I nostri gesti, anche quelli ispirati da sentimenti di
più assoluta generosità, nascondono - talvolta - il desiderio di avere una ricompensa umana. Il Signore ci
chiede molto, anche quando operiamo nel bene, perché la nostra ricompensa sarà grande e commisurata
all'amore che abbiamo donato nella nostra vita. E' questa la vera vicinanza che Egli ci chiede; in una vita
generosamente goduta troviamo il vero primo posto, quello che ci porta nel Cuore di Dio, così grande, da
accogliere tutti noi. Leggiamo allora questo episodio come il voler mettere veramente a fuoco ciò che
riteniamo di più importante nella nostra vita. Da un lato il plauso e la considerazione solo degli uomini,
perché le nostre azioni e le nostre opere siano sempre favorevolmente accettate ed applaudite. Dall'altro
la proposta di Gesù che in linea di principio non è in contrasto con questo nostro desiderio di essere sempre visti positivamente dagli altri. Gesù chiede la coerenza nella nostra vita. Non stacchiamo mai il nostro
sguardo dalla contemplazione del suo Volto. Scopriremo allora che l'umiltà che Gesù ci chiede non è altro
che riconoscere il nostro stato ed anche la possibilità di intrecciare relazioni umane basate sull'amore
vero e il reciproco rispetto. E allora riceveremo la nostra ricompensa, nella risurrezione dei giusti.
Rinuncia come atto di fede
La rinuncia al mondo è un gesto reso possibile solamente dalla grazia della fede nel
fatto che Dio in Gesù dona se stesso per grazia al mondo e che questa grazia non può
venir strappata né attraverso l’uso e
l’impegno nel mondo né attraverso la fuga
presi come tali e da soli. In più il mondo
come valore positivo lo può lasciare nell’atto
di fede solo colui che ha con esso un rapporto
positivo» (K. Rahner).
Se nel vangelo, come nel brano odierno,
Gesù moltiplica gli appelli alla rinuncia, se
invita a portare la propria croce e a seguirlo,
non è per far evadere l’uomo dal mondo, ma
piuttosto per promuovere l’assunzione e la
fedeltà alla condizione umana fino in fondo.
Mentre l’uomo peccatore tenta di realizzare
la felicità cercando di evitare tutto ciò che fa
soffrire e tenta di mettere tra parentesi la
morte, puntando unicamente su ciò che può
offrire la vita presente, il cristiano è invitato
dalla fede a guardare in faccia questa vita
col massimo realismo. Attraverso la sofferenza ed anche la morte egli dà il suo apporto
insostituibile alla riuscita della avventura
umana. Se gli capita di conoscere la tristezza mentre il mondo gioisce, in realtà la sua
tristezza è fecondità di vita. Egli sa che la
morte è la via alla vita. Ma un tale progetto
riesce soltanto nel seguire Gesù sotto l’impulso del suo Spirito.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 1976 un grupo de madres argentinas comenzó
una vigilia silenciosa en frente de las oficinas gubernamentales en la Plaza de Mayo. Vestían de negro, con un
pañuelo blanco en la cabeza y protestaban la desaparición de sus hijos. Poco a poco esta protesta de madres
se fue expandiendo a El Salvador y otros países donde
agentes del gobierno hacían desaparecer a los que obraban por la justicia y el bienestar del pueblo.
En Latinoamérica la Virgen de los Dolores que viste
de negro y llora la muerte de su hijo quien estaba en la
flor de la vida se ha transformado en la Madre de los
Desaparecidos. Ella acompaña silenciosamente en la
protesta de tanta latina que ha perdido hijos, maridos y
hermanos a autoridades injustas o cobardes.
La vigilia de las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo terminó
en enero de 2006 cuando por fin se encontraron con
un gobierno que busca los desaparecidos con ellas. Lamentablemente en muchos lugares las madres de los
desaparecidos todavía no pueden contar con las autoridades civiles. Con ellas María se une en protesta silenciosa.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
ALL IN THE FAMILY
The term “family” gets used quite often today to describe a series of close bonds that are (or ought to be) present
among various groups. Parishes, schools, scout troops, work groups, many different kinds of organizations commonly
refer to themselves as “family” members with each other. How shocking it will be for us today, in our nuclear families or
parish families, to learn from the lips of Jesus himself that it is in the renouncing of family relationships and the rending
of family ties, even the despising of our own God-given life, that we will come to know and understand what it means to
be a disciple, a follower of Jesus Christ. Is all of this to be taken literally? Yes and no. The Gospel today is telling us that
in order to progress as a disciple, to follow Christ more closely, it is Christ and his gospel that alone can be the heart and
center of our lives. Will most of us be called upon literally to leave our family members? Most likely not. But if we are
disciples, we must be ready to do so.
A FAMILY GUIDED BY PERFECT WISDOM
The first reading from Wisdom states, in its own way, this very same principle. All that we know of this life, all
that we hold dearest, that we love and cherish most, all of this is still not of the unsearchable and unknowable riches of
divine wisdom. Jesus’ extreme description of what we must reject establishes the same sort of chasm between God’s
ways and our ways as the author of the Wisdom passage does. But both teachers also instruct us that God can and God
does, through the spirit of grace from on high, come to us and reveal to us the ways of heaven. We do not or cannot
search them out for ourselves in our earthly things or human relationships. But we can, with God’s help, set aside our
own limited natures and come closer in the loving bond God has for us and is prepared to spread among us.
