Mission
Connecting, empowering, creating and transforming our world — one
woman at a time. Womanspace offers programs for women, men and children
to enhance body, mind and spirit, with a focus in the creative arts, holistic health,
interfaith exploration, and environmental stewardship. Situated on a seven-acre
campus between Alpine and Mulford Roads in Rockford, Illinois, Womanspace has
art studios, a gallery, Gallery2Go gift shop, beautiful gardens and a labyrinth, and
operates as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
Goals & Philosophy
Our goal is to offer programs that stimulate awareness, develop competence,
encourage creativity, and generate healthy decision-making. We provide
support that offers honesty, compassion, challenge, and spiritual growth.
Womanspace works cooperatively with others, striving for collaborative
partnerships in our endeavors.
Womanspace believes every woman is a spiritual being, having within her the
potential for health, self-reliance, creativity, wisdom and responsible caring. By
enhancing her potential, she enriches her own life, the life of her family, and
the lives of other people with whom she relates. Through the strong, healthy,
self-development of each individual, the world we live in is made a stronger,
healthier, and more peaceful planet
History
Dorothy Bock and Elaine Hirschenberger, members of the School Sisters of St.
Francis, co-founded Womanspace in Rockford, Illinois, in 1975. The interfaith center
is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors in cooperation with the Executive
Director. Eight Consultants assist Womanspace with their specialized expertise.

Editor’s Note
On Creativity — Today I am again mindful of inner and outer
Board of Directors
paradox. The calendar on my fridge says April, but when I look out my
window, I see a slate grey sky that seems more late November. Trees
tighten their tenacious hold on the budding tips of their branches, as
torrential winds whip through them, depositing tiny ice pellets onto
six bright daffodils and five narcissus blooms on the bank. Whitecaps
whip against the shoreline where my neighbor’s docked canoe still
rests, its bright shell a hot and hopeful red amidst today’s wild grey
cold. In one half hour, the sun returns; the skies are clear. Another
hour and the blizzard is back. Such is life.
President — Colleen McDonald, Occupational Therapist, Rockford Public Schools
Early spring’s paradox is that, while we are ready to be done with wild
cold winds, the winds and weather are not done with us. April teases
us to stay present in the betweens — moving forth and back and forth
again from blizzard to bud, from wintry to warming, from bleak grey
to bright green. We know that spring and summer will come in a cycle
that is never changing and endlessly new. Northern Illinois’ seasonal
contrast is nothing short of magical. There is an urgency about it, and
the sure knowledge that each day the light will linger longer. In every
November and every April, there is a bud of August.
For me, the creative process is often like the vastly changing weather.
Some days, blizzards of ideas whip around in my mind like wild
winds — so many; so untamed; so much “sound and fury.” Some
days, surprising and simple ideas emerge, brilliant in their clarity like
a red canoe or bright daffodil against the ice. If there is a secret to
being truly creative, it is to be present while the storm rages outside,
to notice when the sky suddenly brightens, to pay attention to one
clear image that catches my heart and doesn’t let go. To hold, perhaps,
just the scrap of that bright image and then to concentrate on giving
it expression.
So — I ask you who are reading this — what one thing catches your
attention today and tickles your mind with a possible action? What
is it you could concentrate on and bring into being? What bright
dream in you is begging to be brought forth? Your creative act does
not have to be huge; often it is the tiny creative changes that serve
as the gateway to much bigger ideas. You will not know what lies
ahead if you do not take that first step. Unless you are first aware of
the question, the answer might continue to lie hidden, just part of
the blizzard of ideas that deluge our lives in this information-heavy
society. But all of that really counts for very little if we do not, each in
our own way, help to bring more light into our shared life. So, there
is the challenge!
If you need a creative community in which to act, be sure to count
Womanspace among your resources.

World Labyrinth Day
RT15-6
Saturday, May 7, 2016, 6:30–8:30p (Register by 5/5)
led by Nancy Conrads and dance performance by Meghan & Caitlyn Baylor
Freewill Offering
We invite you to join us for this special evening celebration of the 8th
Annual World Labyrinth Day. We will gather at the Anjali Pavilion
for a brief presentation and then proceed to the labyrinth. Join us
as we experience the power and beauty of a truly unique dance
performance. Meghan Baylor and Caitlyn Baylor will premier
their new site-specific work choreographed specifically in and for
the labyrinth at Womanspace. This piece— titled Ravel— examines
movement and breath within a space that is all continuous and
contained, eternal and extant, stirring and still. Following the performance
we will have the opportunity to walk the labyrinth as a group then gather back
at the pavilion for light refreshments.
Nancy Conrads played a key role in the original research,
design and construction of the labyrinth at Womanspace.
Today, she remains deeply involved in its upkeep. In 2015
Nancy was granted the Womanspirit Award at Womanspace
for her outstanding commitment to service and leadership.
Nancy is a deacon at St. Anskar’s Episcopal Church in Rockford.
Meghan & Caitlyn Baylor grew up in Rockford studying
classical Ballet at Rockford Dance Company and
expanded their study of dance at Auburn
High School in the Creative and Performing
Arts (CAPA) program. They both studied,
performed, and choreographed with the facultyled, modern dance-based ensemble at Grinnell
College in Iowa. During this time, they became
interested in site-specific dance—“dance that is created
for a specific site and is inspired by design, architecture, the
history of a site, and how a site is used and viewed by people”
(as defined by site-specific dance pioneer Stephen Koplowitcz).
After graduating, Meghan & Caitlyn returned to Rockford with aspirations of launching
I-Spy-Co, a site-specific dance company. Caitlyn is also Business Manager for the
Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity, and Meghan is an independent teaching artist.
They are both company members of Without Shoes Modern Dance Company, directed
by Maria Castello, and Bad Wolf Dance Theatre, directed by Amy A. Wright.
About the Labyrinth at Womanspace
Labyrinths have been in use for over 4000 years. Modeled after the labyrinth in medieval Chartres Cathedral in France, our eleven-circuit design features an echoing
energy vortex at the center. The basic design is fundamental to nature as well as many cultures and religious traditions. A devoted team of volunteers, led by a core
group of twelve women, broke ground on our prairie in 2000 and dedicated the Labyrinth on September 22, 2003. Both therapeutic and energizing, this walking
meditation path is is our gift to the community and available to anyone seeking quiet and reflection. Our Labyrinth is open to visitors seven days a week during
daylight hours. To reach it, follow the ribbon hoops at the entrance to the woods on the right side of the circle drive.

OTC & Rx Drugs: What You Should Know
WK15-16
Do you ever get annoyed by the sheer
number of times someone at the doctor’s
office asks about the medications you take,
even if you were just there recently? There
are reasons for that: often we forget the one
or two medications that we don’t routinely
take or consider like antacid, acetaminophen, or even vitamins. Those “little”
details can cause big problems. Doctor’s offices, hospitals, and pharmacies all
have electronic tools, not available to us at home. When we are not clear about
the medications we take, prescription or not, some harmful and often expensive
drug interactions can occur. Susan will share stories that highlight the hazards of
prescription medications mixed with over the counter product. She will provide
a list of common drug interactions that you can take home.
Susan is Assistant Director of Pharmacy at MercyRockford Health
System. She recieved a BS in Pharmacy and a MS in Administration
from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and did her
residency in Pharmacy Administration at Rush Presbyterian St.
Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. She also serves on the Womanspace Board.

Meditation as a Wellness Practice
Meditation is the practice and process of paying attention
and focusing your awareness. Whether you are seeking
greater focus, less stress and more peace of mind, or a
deeper appreciation of the beauty and richness of life, the
simple practice of sitting down and turning your attention
inward can do wonders! Bring a yoga mat or rug if you
would like to do this lying down. You can also choose to
meditate in a sitting position on the floor or in a chair.
Dr. Shiraz Tata came to the USA from India to get a doctorate
in Counseling Psychology from SIU-C and then just kept moving
up the state of Illinois to Rockford where she has lived for the
past 20 years! She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private
practice where she creates a safe space for people to share
whatever may be weighing on their minds or hearts. She loves
to facilitate discussions on diversity and multicultural topics, as well as teaching

Open Up a World of Possibilities:
On the Page and In Our Lives WRT15-4
Our writing can affect our world in endless ways.
It can weave beauty in and around our lives. The
stories we tell have the ability not only to show
our perception and experience of the world, but
to change our vision and understanding of it. By
creating new possibilities on paper, we open our
minds/hearts/souls to the many new treasures and opportunities that lie within
us. No experience in writing is necessary but seasoned writers are welcome.
Deborah Gaines is a licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer who
earned an MFA in Writing & Consciousness from the California
Institute of Integral Studies. It is her passion in caring for
the dead, her observant eye on the living, and her spiritual
connection to the Midwest corn that create the influence for her
writing. She is currently working on a multi-genre memoir to
create a layered look at society’s fascination with and avoidance of death.

Reiki Classes with Debby Gaines
Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning ‘Universal Life Force Energy’ and describes the energy found in all of life. An ancient form of hands on energy healing, Reiki
is a skill obtained through an attunement (opening) to bring the power of Universal Life Force Energy through the human chakra system. The energy then is used to
balance the body or an object by bringing it into harmony with the universe once again.
Debby is a member of Womanspace Board of Directors. She has been practicing Reiki for 13 years, having received her Reiki One attunement in May of 2003 from
Gretta Anderson. She then continued her studies with Colleen Helgerson, receiving her Usui Shiki Ryoho Master Teacher attunement in 2009.

of those meridians, you are able to smooth out
the kinks in your energy system and experience
greater relaxation and peace. Sound too good
to be true? Come and see for yourself. This is an introduction into the amazingly
simple and effective world of tapping. No previous experience necessary. You will
leave the evening with enough information to empower you to continue tapping

Food Security in Rockford:
What’s Being Done & How You Can Help
The Basics of International Travel
LL15-15
One out of six children is food insecure
in Winnebago County. The poverty rate
in our public school system is so high, it
is more effective to feed everyone a free
breakfast/lunch than spend the time to
figure out who is not eligible! The Rock
River Valley Pantry, a community-based
food pantry, assists over 7,000 clients every month. In FY2015 they distributed
over 1.2 millions pounds of food. Our clients receive emergency food provisions
that will last them 3-4 days. This is accomplished with the help of 80+ volunteers,
a food rescue program that is supported by the local grocery stores, food drives,
fundraising events, and donations. Discussion will include local poverty facts,
impact on our community, and opportunities for you to get
involved and make a difference.
Kim Adams-Bakke has been the Executive Director at the Rock
River Valley Pantry for the last 10 years. Prior to her service
with the RRVP, she spent 23 years in recreation and facility

If you are planning an international trip and
want it to go as smoothly as possible, you
will want to hear the tips Jan has to offer.
She will explain what you need to know
about passports (including the upcoming
special issues faced by Illinois residents);
safety tips, as well as where to go for help
in another country; the pros and cons of using a travel agent; helpful ideas about
travel insurance, and much more. Be ready to take lots of notes! There will be
plenty of time for questions and answers.
As part of a 5th grade Geography assignment, Jan Heuer was
asked to list places she would like to see. Her answer: “I want
to sail the Seven Seas, visit the seven continents, stand on the
Equator and the Prime Meridian, and see Kathmandu and
Timbuktu.” She has done all of these things and more in over
30 years of travel. A former teacher, Jan spends time as a

Mindfulness Group
MG15-8, -9, -10, -11
Much of the time we exist in mindlessness, a state of
semi-awareness governed by habit and distraction.
Mindlessness causes us to suffer, probably more than
we are even aware. Mindfulness can be defined in a
variety of ways, but simply stated it is a deliberate way
of paying attention to what is happening within oneself
as it is happening. Mindfulness is moment-by-moment
awareness. It’s paying attention without judgment or
evaluation. When we are mindful, we become more mentally alert, we’re more
open and attentive, and we’re able to perceive ourselves more clearly, as well as
observing details that often escape our notice. If you can identify with any of these
statements, you may find this monthly group very helpful.

Over a 36 hour period in LA, a handful of disparate people’s
lives intertwine as they deal with the tense race relations
that belie life in the city. Among them: the Caucasian district
attorney, who uses race as a political card; his Caucasian
wife, who, having recently been carjacked by two black
men, believes that her stereotypical views of non-whites is
justified and cannot be considered racism; the two black
carjackers who use their race both to their advantage and
as an excuse; partnered Caucasian police constables, one who is a racist and uses
his authority to harass non-whites, and the other who hates his partner because of
those racist views, but who may have the same underlying values in his subconscious;
a black film director and his black wife, who believes her husband doesn’t support
their black background enough, especially in light of an incident with the racist
white cop; partnered police detectives and sometimes lovers. (2004) (R)

Sunshine Cleaning
This is the extraordinary story of one of the world’s greatest
living minds, the renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking,
who falls deeply in love with fellow Cambridge student, Jane
Wilde. Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received
an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane
fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most
ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has
precious little of: time. Together, they defy impossible odds,
breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could
ever have dreamed. The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life
with Stephen, by Jane Hawking, directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh,
and starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. (2014) (PG-13)
Date: Time: Fee: Rebecca (Juliette Binoche) is one of the world’s top war
photojournalists, capturing dangerous and chilling images in
the most dire landscapes, all in an effort to shed light on the
real cost of modern war. But, she is also a wife and mother,
leaving behind a husband and two young daughters every
time she travels to a new combat zone. After a near-death
experience, husband Marcus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) levels
an ultimatum: give up the dangerous profession or lose the
family she counts on being there when she returns from each assignment. Yet
the conviction that her photos can make a difference keeps pulling at Rebecca’s
resolve, making it difficult for her to walk away entirely. With an offer to photograph
a refugee camp in Kenya, a place allegedly so safe that daughter Steph (Lauryn
Canny) is allowed to join her, Rebecca comes face to face with just how much she
risks each time she steps back into the fray. (2013) (NR)

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
BW15-8
While set mostly in Germany and France before and
during WWII, All the Light We Cannot See is not really a
“war novel.” Marie Laure is a blind 14-year-old French girl
who flees to the countryside when her father disappears
from Nazi-occupied Paris. Werner is a gadget-obsessed
German orphan whose skills admit him to a brutal branch
of Hitler Youth. Doerr masterfully re-creates the deprived
civilian conditions of war-torn France and the strictly
controlled lives of the military occupiers through Marie
Laure and Werner who provide powerful examples of the way average people in
trying times must decide daily between morality and survival.

In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize
winning author, Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the
great untold stories of American history: the decadeslong migration of black citizens who fled the south for
the northern and western cities in search of a better life.
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million
people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares
this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in
history. She interviewed more than a thousand people and
gained access to new data and official records to write this definitive and vividly
dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our
country, and ourselves.

Maycomb, Alabama. 26-year-old Jean Louise Finch—
“Scout”—returns home from New York City to visit
her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of
the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were
transforming the South, Jean Louise’s homecoming turns
bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her
close-knit family, the town, and the people dearest to her.
Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values
and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many
of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly
captures a young woman, and a world, in painful yet necessary transition out of the
illusions of the past—a journey that can only be guided by one’s own conscience.

The Diary of Mattie Spenser by Sandra Dallas
BW15-11
With the convention of finding a diary in an elderly
neighbor’s attic trunk framing her story, Dallas creates a
ripping good read from this fictional journal. Beginning in
1865, a week after her wedding in Ft. Madison, Iowa, Mattie
Spenser confides to her diary as she and her new husband
travel by Conestoga wagon to the Colorado Territories. The
building of a sod house; the births and deaths of children;
the melting of narrow attitudes toward “loose” women,
Indians, and Negroes; and the growth of Mattie as a person
are all visible in these pages, full of what seems like genuine details of prairie life.

Hatha Vinyasa/Restorative Yoga
Therapeutic Yoga for People with Chronic Conditions
Hatha yoga is a slow-paced, gentle asana practice
focusing on introducing basic yoga poses and
establishing a strong foundation in the practice of
yoga. Hatha yoga balances the Ha – “sun/stimulating”
energy with the Tha – “moon/calming” energy.
Therapeutic Yoga is an effective practice for those
recovering from or living with injury, illness, or
disease. This specialty yoga class blends restorative
yoga (supported postures), chair yoga, gentle yoga,
Pranayama (breath work), individualized attention
through gentle hands-on adjustments and assists,
and guided meditation techniques combined in such
a way that it is an excellent choice for those who need something gentle yet effective.
Restorative yoga helps promote deep relaxation of
the body and the mind. Postures provide similar
benefits to classic Hatha yoga postures and are
usually done in a supported manner to minimize strain and maximize opening.

Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra means Yogic sleep; a state of conscious,
deep sleep where we learn to relax consciously.
This class is deep relaxation with an inner state of
awareness, which has been found to reduce stress,
tension, and anxiety. It is beneficial for insomnia
and to calm symptoms of chronic pain, headaches, depression, high blood pressure,
heart disease, autoimmune disease, and has been shown to help those in recovery
from addiction. Yoga Nidra also helps calm and clear the mind and has potential
to provide emotional healing—restoring our body senses and mind to their natural
functions. It is said that one hour of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to four hours of sleep.

Brownie Journey: A World of Girls
GST15-9
For registered Brownies. Stories are all
around us – in movies, in books, in television
shows, in advertisements, on the news and
even on cereal boxes. Stories inspire. Stories
motivate. Stories spark imagination and help
girls learn about themselves and the world.
A World of Girls helps engage Brownies in this
wider world of stories in a way that gets them looking for clues to help make the
world a better place.
With some help from Brownie Elf along the way, girls see how they can create
positive change in the world. Girls will complete all requirements for the
Journey. Registration includes cost of all material and badges.

Cadette Journey: MEdia
GST15-11
For registered Cadettes. Cadettes
look for the ME in media and learn how
they can shape media — for themselves,
their community and the world. Stories
are told everywhere and in all kinds of
formats — in movies by big Hollywood
studios, online by bloggers and social
networks, through the clothes chosen by stylists for a fashion spread in a magazine,
through the photos chosen by a newspaper editor. MEdia helps girls think about
who is responsible for telling all the stories they see around them, and how they can
use their story to help “re-make” the forms of media they see around them. Girls
will complete all requirements for the Journey. Registration includes
cost of all material and badges.

For registered Junior Girl Scouts. Juniors learn just
how many roles are open to them in the world and the
possibilities those roles open for them. Whether they want
to fly a plane, lead a rock band or win a gold medal, aMUSE helps girls take center
stage and try out more roles than they ever thought possible, with a little help
from Dez and the Muses.

free to bring anything special you would like to add to
your canvas! Please bring a sack lunch and a drink.

bright colors.

your own stylish masterpiece.

admire. Please bring a sack lunch and a drink.
Children age 7–12. Do you love to doodle on
your paper at school? Well, now you can turn that
doodle into a funky art piece with your own name.
Zen doodling is a hip, super fun, and relaxing way
to create art. No experience necessary. Please
bring a sack lunch and a drink.
June 27 Afternoon: Melted Bead Art
July 25 Morning: Trendy Modge Podge® Letter
July 25 Afternoon: HiP WASHi Tape Peace Sign
Children age 7–12. Add some pizzazz to your room
with a groovy Washi Tape peace sign. There are many
zany types of Washi Tape to choose from, and it’s so easy
to make. Have fun adding a little zing to your style, then
peace out, man!
